Won the rack back-to-back Sandpoint beat out Bonners Ferry two years in a row at Moose Madness Sarah Wells // Business Manager
T
he tradition of interscholastic competition between Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry continued in 2014 with the Moose Madness competition. Sandpoint was faced with many challenges in planning Moose Madness, as Bonners Ferry’s student council group was undergoing changes that prevented the communication between councils Sarah Wells // Business Manager both from running The crowd section cheered at Bonners Ferry on December 19.

smoothly. For a time, it seemed that Moose Madness may not have been a possibility at all. However, come the night of December 19, spirit buses and cars full of students traveled to Bonners Ferry for the festivities. For a second year in a row, over $10,000 was raised by students at Sandpoint High School for the Sandpoint Lion’s Club Toys for Tots drive. This time, however, toys were
not allowed to be collected. This intitally was thought to be a challenge, but students were still successful in breaking last year’s recordhigh fundraising. In a triple-overtime game, the girls’ basketball team was ultimately victorious, and the boys’ team dominated as well. Sandpoint came home with the trophy for the second year in a row, successfully “winning the rack b a c k - t o - b a c k .”

Three minor tremors disrupted the Idaho Panhandle on April 23 and April 24
Austin Laiche // Social Media Editor
O
n April 23, 2015 the panhandle of Idaho and surrounding areas felt three tremors. The first earthquake occurred at roughly 7:30 p.m. while the second came around 10:40 p.m. and the third at 1:30 a.m. local time. “It was fun and kind of thrilling,” said Brandon Orr, a senior.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) released their readings of the 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 7:32 p.m. including its depth of 3.1 miles and its location being 14 miles southeast of Sandpoint. The second rumble was reported at 10:43 p.m. which showed a 4.2 magnitude and that the quake was
again 3.1 miles deep, but only nine miles east southeast of Ponderay. The third was very soft in comparison to the two before it, only recording a 1.4 magnitude. “I didn’t feel the first one, but I felt the second one. I was on the couch with my dog,” said Arlene Mitton, the receptionist at the high school.

The Class of 2015 is still waiting on a senior class gift confirmation from the administration Madi Sleyster // Photo Editor

E
very year, the student council senior class representatives decide to give a gift back to the school to keep the memory of their class alive for the years to come. Last year’s senior class decided to pay for welcome rugs in the school as their class gift. For another year, the seniors donated the school the red benches outside the entrance, as well as the picnic tables
both with and without the chessboard in the middle. However, this year, the senior gift hasn’t been decided on. There are only ideas as to what the actual gift will be until the admin confirms one idea. “Our ideas are either metal work along the right side of the main entrance, pop-up tents for school clubs to rent, or a scholarship for future senior student council members” Aislynn Robert-
son, Senior Class President, said. The metal work outside the entrance would add to the visual appeal of the school as a whole. Pop-up tents would create a place for clubs to hold fundraisers at football games. And, the scholarship would benefit graduating student council members. No matter which idea StuCo and the admin decide on, the Class of 2015 will be remembered for years to come.
Prom was held on April 25; much earlier than usual
Madi Sleyster // Photo Editor
P
rom involves a lot of preparation for both the students attending and the students planning the event. The date of prom was one of the notable decisions made in this year’s dance preparation. Under the administration of Dr. Meyer, prom was usually held the weekend before graduation. However, this year, prom was held on April 25. With the threat of inconsistent weather in late April as a concern, seniors were hesitant to accept the new date of prom.

Q:
How long have you been skateboarding and what got you started?

Do you think you will continue to pursue skateboarding after high school?
A:
TYLER MEYER ruby june
I didn’t expect it at all, I was just browsing Instagram and they had a welcome video up and I was stoked. It does mean a lot to me and it feels really good to be a part of the team!
A:
I’ve been skating for a little more than 2 years and actually my friends and I just decided to start skateboarding because we had nothing better to do and it just stuck with me.
I’m not trying to take it to a pro level or anything, I just want a career in the skateboarding industry. But no matter what happens, I’m always going to make time to skate; it’s just about having fun.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH
Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY THROUGH LEADERSHIP?
Q: WHAT IS THE MEDIA THAT YOU LIKE TO WORK IN MOST?
A: The hardest part of Early Completers for me was having such a heavy course load junior year. [...] The greatest part though was how light my senior year was. I was granted a lot of freedom both at home and in school and it helped me to mature a lot and figure out what I wanted to do after high school.
A: I have learned that people learn how to do things in many different ways and in order to be the best version of myself that I can be I have to be able to appeal to everybody’s learning capabilities.
A: I like using pencils most of the time. I am not big on painting. I really like doing printmaking.
THE EARLY COMPLETER PROGRAM?
Q: WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT IN HIGH SCHOOL?
A: I don’t have one outstanding proud moment in high school. Getting my CNA was an amazing accomplishment for me and I think just coming out of the whole high school experience a better and stronger person means a lot to me. RUBY JUNE PLANS TO ATTEND MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY TO PURSUE PRE-MED OR PRE-NURSING.
Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL? A: I think you develop the most as a per-
son; you break down your own personal barriers the most when you dive into things that force you out of your comfort zone. Go do stuff by yourself. Go do stuff without your friends. Go sit with other people at the lunch table. I think it is at those times, in those situations that you find out not only who you are, but you find out who you want to be by learning who the people around you are, not just the normal friend group you surround yourself with. interviews & photos // Cooper King & Sarah Wells
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT TO DRAW?
A: People probably [...] I don’t like having to use reference pictures. I just feel better about my art when I do it more independently. Q: IS ART SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?
A: I definitely don’t think I could pursue it as a career [...] I think if I went into like professional-ish type art I would probably be a lot less secure.

My dreads got itchy from sleeping on the beach and getting sand in them. It was also because of my spiriual beliefs. Your hair is your greatest accessory, it makes you beautiful and I wanted to experience life without it. It says: God is a consiousness that explores different dimensions. Everything is God, God is everything. All beliefs help us explore different dimensions. Dimensions, dream, reality. You’re really involved in the glassblowing and pottery classes, do you think that will stay with you?
Yeah. It will definitely be something I stick with. I’m not going to be able to do it for a while until I have my own stuff. Once I’m older I want to have my own pottery and glassblowing studio.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN DRAMA?
A: It’s a lot of a work. You practice so much. It involves really getting out of your comfort zone, really pushing at your skill level. Q: WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT?
A: My proudest achievement in High School would be getting one of the leading roles in a play. Q: DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE.
A: Artistically, I really love drawing. My favorite thing to do is draw different people, different characters. Each person has their own unique story, personally. Being able to tell it through an expression, through body language; it’s so fun.

Q: IS WELDING A NEW-FOUND PASSION?
A: You gotta you know how to express yourself creatively and I have seen metalwork is my way of doing that. Welding is a way for me to creatively express myself and do something practical with metal. It is a cool medium to work with. Q: WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED MOST IN HIGH SCHOOL?
A: I would say the one thing I have learned most in high school is the concept of being able to understand situations from different people’s perspectives [...] Everybody sees things differently and in high school you get to see all spectrums of life [...] Being able to understand how people look at things is kind of an interesting deal. “when i was a freshman”
“WHEN I WAS A by Sadie Nitcy & Sarah Wells
FRESHMAN I WISH I...”
It’s no secret that as the years change, so do we. Sometimes we look back at our freshman selves and cringe, other times we laugh and simply understand it was a different time in our lives. We asked some of the senior class to complete the sentence “When I was a freshman, I wish I would’ve known ____” to demonstrate this point.
emily mckay “When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known that if you don’t know what you want to do in your life it is not a big deal and you have plenty of time and can still decide after high school.”
jean-luc albertson “When I was a freshman, l wish I would have known how to sweet talk my teachers.”
dawna townsend
edward pilkington “When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known not to be afraid of high school. I was so terrified of the seniors and now I don’t know why people are scared of the seniors because they don’t really care. I also wish I would have done better on keeping up with my schoolwork.”
sam powell abby thompson “When I was a freshman, I was really nervous and shy coming into the high school because I thought it was really big but after the first week I realized that it wasn’t. Also not being afraid to be yourself and ask questions because most things everyone relates to, so just give it a chance and you will be fine.”
“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known that it is OK to be a slacker sometimes and to procrastinate; you don’t always have to be 100%.”
“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known to not stay up until three in the morning watching YouTube videos and Silicon Valley.”
“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known how fast time flies and how much I took it for granted.”
“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known to really enjoy my high school years because you have to go out into the real world and that’s kind of scary so you should really appreciate the time you spend in high school while it is here.”
kelsey roe “When I was a freshman, I wish I would have realized that the workload is not as difficult or overwhelming as it initially seems.”

lacheale linscott

“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have calmed down and realized that it is not the end of the world. Just have fun while you are in high school and don’t be so serious.”

“When I was a freshman, I wish I would have known that I didn’t have to take a foreign language, like two years of Spanish because you don’t actually have to take that to graduate.”

Class of 2015 STAFF MEMORIES...”
“
by Sadie Nitcy & Jackson Russo
Over the years, staff members have had the privilege of interacting with many different classes - some better than others. We asked staff members what their favorite memories about the Class of 2015 were, both good and bad.
lisa cessna
kristin hawkins
nachele search
erica haynes
“The class of 2015 has always been fun because I think I have had most of them in honors classes and so even though we were looking at difficult topics, they would come in and persevere through it and everyone was always fun and relaxed about it. That’s what stood out to me.”
“My favorite moment from this class was probably either seeing everyone all dressed up for prom and hanging out, having a good time or seeing them at Ironman; I think both were really cool, it was awesome to see the senior class pull off the win in a really close game.”
“My favorite memory from the class of 2015 is seeing Sadie Nitcy grow up. The Nitcy’s and Search’s have been friends forever so I remember Sadie from when she was just a little baby. Now she’s not baby Sadie anymore.”
“This is one of my favorite classes. You guys were really well-rounded, level headed, and kind. It was easy to develop relationships with you guys. You guys are super personable and accepting. I probably got to be the goofiest with you and [you] didn’t make me feel bad about it; I could be myself.”

“The Class of 2015 was very pleasant, fun, very thoughtful, and just really enjoyable kids to be around.”
“I remember the Class of 2015 for always making me laugh. It seemed as if they were really lighthearted and brightened my day.”
“My favorite memory of the Class of 2015 was the repetitive question: ‘do I still get to keep my honor cord if I have an F in more than one class?’”
“Here’s something that I thought: my first year was with you all as sophomores and now that some of you are seniors, I am shocked that some of [you] made it.”
