The concept of cloud storage is fundamentally changing the custom installation industry. In the past, it was simple. Music and video content would be accessed using standardised sources - a CD player or changer, an AM/FM tuner, a VCR or DVD player – with CDs and DVDs interchangeable and capable of playing on any devices. With virtual hard disk space available in the cloud, consumers can now upload and store music, movies, photos, and/or documents online. They can then access and playback the content over the Internet using a computer or mobile device. Here’s Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO talking at the US launch of the iCloud, a service, which is predicted to arrive in the UK next year:“Today it is a real hassle and very frustrating to keep all your information and content up-to-date across all your devices. iCloud keeps your important information and content up to date across all your devices. All of this happens automatically and wirelessly, and because it’s integrated into our apps you don’t even need to think about it—it all just works”. Predicted to arrive in the UK in 2012, iCloud is just one of a growing number of services being pushed out to consumers. Google, Amazon and others are introducing their own cloud-based options to join existing services already well-known to installers, like Spotify. So, where does all this choice leave the custom installer? What are the key distinctions between the various services? How can they be integrated into a CI scheme? And, how can you be sure that you recommend the right media storage, streaming and distribution solution for your customers? Cloud-based media is one of the headline topics at this year’s CEDIA Business and Technology Forum taking place at Belton Woods in Grantham, Lincolnshire on the 4 October 2011. Make sure you know where the cloud is heading by joining that session. More details on the event are overleaf.
“The ability to converge media over The Cloud can only be a good thing. With the ability to co-locate storage, media and devices as well as even having remote management for automation systems where back up and redundancy could become part of an on-going service plan, we feel confident that our clients will see the benefits in The Cloud infrastructure. Obviously, a benefit to ourselves is the ability to charge monthly service plans and schemes, offering a way of building reoccurring revenue streams.” Matthew Cupper, Adept-IS

Over 250 brands supported the event which remains the only annual trade show and education event in Europe which is 100% dedicated to the design, installation and integration of home electronic systems. The final attendance totalled 5,559, around 7% up on the 2010 event, with exceptional visitor attendance on the middle day of the show boosted by steadier, high quality stand traffic on the Tuesday and Thursday. From the pre-registration statistics, around 60% of visitors who applied to attend were new to the event with many drawn from the fields of property development, interior and lighting design, architecture and electrical contracting. A major event attraction this year was the 3D Zone featuring top end displays from JVC and Panasonic with support from a broad range of top industry names, including Arcam, AWE Europe, Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, KEF and URC. In two specially-built theatres, the latest cutting edge equipment demonstrated how aweinspiring technology combined with immersive 3D content can help custom

The CEDIA Home Technology Event, organised for the first time this year by Upper Street Events, generated a positive response from the industry, attracting a significant number of debut exhibitors and new, high quality visitors to the show. On the back of its strong performance this year, Upper Street has already taken significant advanced bookings from AWE, Control 4, Premier Mounts, Redline, Carlo Gavazzi, Totem and IMP for next year’s show which will take place on 29th–31st May 2012 at the same venue.
installers provide a stunning home cinema, gaming, sports and movie viewing experience for their customers. Other highlights included the new Hub Theatre arena on the show floor which regularly attracted audiences of 50+ to its series of free presentations. The programme cast an important eye to the future of the industry with sessions from a host of leading experts including Jim Read from Arup, Sue Timney from the British Institute of Interior Design, David Myres from ADAM Architecture, Lucy Martin from John Cullen Lighting and Tony Cable from the NICEIC. Away from the show floor the usual mix of networking and fun once again proved to be a winning formula with CEDIA and Upper Street Events hosting the industry drinks reception offering some welldeserved R&R to exhibitors and visitors on the opening night. Over 300 attended the informal get together which was held in the Fox@ExCeL. To celebrate the launch of Songcast and mark a new era in Linn multiroom, music for the networking party came from Admiral Fallow, courtesy of Linn. Fresh from Glastonbury and tipped by the BBC to make this year’s shortlist for the Mercury Music prize, this was a great opportunity for exhibitors and visitors to see them up-close before they move on to much bigger stages.
Your views on the show… “We have been constantly busy on our stand this year and have definitely seen the right people. The hub theatre has been a great idea too. The guest speakers have been of high quality and it has brought new audiences to the show.” Adam Jones, Account Manager, Loewe UK Ltd “We have established 10–15 new dealers and met with 100 existing dealers that want to do more business. It’s been amazing, and our stand and the show has been thriving. Potentially, the best show we’ve ever had.” Paul Cummin, Artcoustic UK “The show provided a great platform for us to show our key new 3D products to many of our existing UK customers and the press in a very short space of time. We have already generated several very exciting new business opportunities as a direct result.” Alan Roser, Managing Director, Sim2 UK Ltd

60 seconds with…
David Hockaday Who are you?
What’s your favourite film?
David Hockaday, Business Manager and Head of AV ProVision.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It’s not deep or factual but almost every scene makes me laugh. Otherwise I think the twist of The Sixth Sense is still hard to beat. Although Inception is right up there!
What’s your company and where is it based? AV ProVision, we are a brand new AV Partner to the channel. We specialise in providing the latest audio visual and consumer electronics from some of the world's biggest and best brands to the custom install channel. We are part of the business portfolio of AV Promotions (a Sunday Times 2010 Fast Track 100 company) based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. How did you get into the industry? I have been working in the FMCG vertical for 15 years and found myself looking after the Leisure market at a major distributor. I now have two World Cup roll outs under my belt!
What’s your favourite album? I’m not really an album fan as I tend to only like certain songs. But my taste is varied with everything from the Prodigy to Neil Diamond on my iPod. What’s your favourite project and why? There have been a few over the years and I seem to be never far from a screen I supplied, whether I am in the Gym or having a coffee at a motorway service station. But more recently it would have to be supplying screens to a reseller for a major golf event in the UK, a massive achievement for a brand new venture.
“
We strive to deliver the highest standards in the supply of products and quite simply CEDIA adds value to our proposition. It is a privilege to be associated with such a credible and professional organisation.
”
Which custom installation technology do you consider the most important today and why? Arguably this would be the control system. This is the heart of any custom install and needs to deliver to provide the perfect AV solution. How long have you been a CEDIA member? AV ProVision is a brand new trade member, but I have personally been associated with CEDIA for over 6 years. Why did you join the Association? We strive to deliver the highest standards in the supply of products and quite simply CEDIA adds value to our proposition. It is a privilege to be associated with such a credible and professional organisation. What’s the biggest issue for custom installation businesses today and how can they deal with it? The Internet. Almost everything can be found cheaper on the Internet, except haircuts and funerals. It devalues our proposition, as consumers never take into consideration service levels and returns policy etc. If there was one thing you could change in the industry what would it be? The concept that distributors are ‘box shifters'. It is true that we could be seen in this light but in essence we do so much more, and we do it well. We understand our customers businesses and do everything we can to ensure we deliver! If you weren’t in the custom installation sector, what would you like to be doing and why? I would like to be a nightclub owner. I love socialising and this way I could make money rather than spend my own!

MEMBERSHIP GROWS IN ITALY We are delighted to announce that earlier this year, Italy became the third country from outside of the UK within Region 1; where CEDIA membership is now in double figures. Today, membership totals 419. The momentum is certainly building with our Membership Development Officer, Michelle Ford, reporting healthy interest in the benefits of Association membership from more and more companies. As in France and South Africa, we are actively supporting this growth, providing education support for dealers as part of CEDIA’s commitment to raising standards and awareness for our industry. For example, as part of the All Digital Expo (Fiera di Vicenza, Vicenza, 16-17 June 2011), we provided specialist training for Italy’s growing number of residential custom installers, keen to develop their business and build relationships with architects, interior designers and homebuilders.
“If custom installation businesses are to expand then it’s important that they reach out and
Chiara Benedettini, President of Connessioni commented: “In Italy, the residential system integration market is still relatively young in comparison to countries like the UK and the USA. It’s important that professional’s are made aware of the concept of custom installation. Often Italian operators have high competences but apply them in different areas, from residential through to commercial, without building a specific and vertical approach. CEDIA, who now has 16 members in Italy, can educate integrators to add value to both their profession and business. Furthermore, in Italy we don’t have any system of certification for integrators, so CEDIA certification would give value to the profession, with a ‘language’ that customers can easily understand.”

influence potential specifiers” says Matt Nimmons, CEDIA’s Operations Director. “CEDIA provides its members with tailored courses to help businesses understand the trends in the market and be prepared to introduce the concept of smart homes and integration to the specifier audiences. We were delighted to attend All Digital Expo and share these teachings with delegates to help them build their business for the future”. At All Digital Expo, CEDIA hosted two courses. Global Technology and Consumer Trends in Residential Integrated Systems highlighted future technologies and consumer perceptions that will affect the residential integration sector in the years ahead. This course also looked at how CEDIA members across Europe are using their CEDIA membership to market their companies and increase sales to consumers and specifiers. CEDIA’s Certified Outreach Instructor (CCOI) workshop taught members the basic skills necessary to deliver an effective presentation of the CEDIA course, 'Designing Integrated
Laura Lazzerini, Italian member Studio LGL says: “CEDIA can help to improve standards of quality in design and installation across Italy. CEDIA will also increase the communication/integration between professionals in the audio video installation market. With CEDIA’s guidance, members will be informed of methodic approaches to design and installation activities in the Italian market. This is only the beginning of the road for CEDIA, the Association will give great satisfaction and improvement for the professionals in Italy."

experience when they engage with our industry. This experience begins with the initial contact, and extends right through the design process, ultimately, resulting in a professionally installed home technology system.
