STATE OF
THE INDUSTRY CEDIA welcomed over 100 smart home industry professionals to the London Connect with CEDIA event last month. It kicked off with a State of the Industry round table discussion which included around 50 people representing members, non-members, trade suppliers and other professions, such as, the Electrical Contractors’ Association. Kris Hogg, CEDIA Chairman led the round table and focused on key developments within the smart home industry, highlighting the introduction of mass market products and what effect this might have on the CI sector. The general consensus was that this new tier of home technology products will, of course, have an impact, but that there is still a great opportunity for skilled professionals to install products, and this won’t change.
aren’t interested in hearing about the wires and the various products, they’re ultimately seeking to enjoy a luxury lifestyle that our technology can bring. So, even if mass market products become more popular, there will always be a requirement for great service, and that is where our industry can really build differentiation and business.
Stuart Tickle of AWE expressed the view that the situation mirrors the concern that most people had for the arrival of the iPad and iPhone. The industry thought that these innovations would mark the end of home control systems but instead companies like Crestron, Control4 and URC are thriving. As Will Brocklebank of Face to Face Digital and Rupert Merryweather of HaveMoreControl pointed out, consumers aren’t that well informed about home technology. There are a group of DIY consumers who are happy to do the research and try some products out for themselves, but a significantly large proportion of end users are happy to pay for the advice, design skills and installation expertise provided by custom installation professionals. David Smith from SMC backed this view, making the point that home technology professionals are providing a service; they’re not just about products. Customers
Certain products are great, and consumers are familiarising themselves with these innovations, but a simple software update can disrupt their whole set up. It won’t be long before homeowners get completely fed up with these issues. Kris Gamble of Customised commented that there are three tiers to the market - DIY, ‘prosumer’, a simpler install section and then high end custom install. While custom install is well represented by associations, the other markets aren’t. These areas are likely to be dominated by electricians, but they require training.
What manufacturers, distributors and installers need to do, is decide on the area of the market that they want to focus on and then do the best they can to meet the customer’s requirements in this area. Simon Buddle, CEDIA’s Education Director turned the conversation onto wiring. Whatever the product is, wires are needed, and again, this is where professional installers come in. Simon also announced that the CEDIA Recommended Wiring Guidelines is currently being updated and will be available as a benefit in the near future. Turning the attention to what clients are asking for, Omar Hikal of Archimedia explained that apart from security, everything else is a nicety. Clients want nice-to-have products, so AV still plays a massive part in what we are selling. Robin Courtney of SMC works on a lot of multi-dwelling projects and took issue with this point in this area of the market. Cost is everything for developers so they don’t want to have unnecessary products installed, he argued. The state of the industry round table ended on a positive note. While some attendees were concerned with the latest developments in the industry, many don’t see it as a threat. The market is widening and it is up to each company to position themselves correctly to take advantage of these opportunities.

What’s new with Apple? Last month, Apple announced the rollout of iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch along with details on their new software and services. What does this mean for CEDIA members, both designer/installers and manufacturers/suppliers?
1. iOS 8 Upgrade May Cause Disruption With Current iOS-Based Systems The iOS 8 upgrade was made available on September 17. No customer should upgrade any iOS product that serves as a primary control device without speaking with you, their installer first. Let them know that is for their protection so that you are able to evaluate the impact of this new software on their systems. Expect service and upgrade calls and use them as an opportunity to recommend back-up and verification services for their devices before they upgrade.
2. The Apple Watch Is Poised To Become An Integral Part of the Connected Home
Members of the CEDIA Technology Council along with CEDIA senior staff have studied the live keynote and blog feeds to identify several top items you need to know that might impact your business.
With a re-imagined user interface, location awareness, and other key innovations, the Apple Watch will enable CEDIA members to provide a more personal control experience. Start to think about the wearables market in general and how it will impact all of your clients.
3. Apple iPhone 6 Embraces Near Field Communication (NFC) The iPhone 6 models bring NFC to the Apple ecosystem. Be aware of how NFC could be utilised in clever ways to activate home controls that interact with physical objects. Keep this in mind as you look at other home technology products and be aware of the implications NFC has with triggered events in access and controls systems.
4. Touch ID Released to 3rd-Party Developers This is a key element to increase device and data security thanks to twofactor authentication provided by the biometric sensor on iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. Along with Apple’s rollout of new APIs, this will open up huge opportunities for technology integrators as they deploy customised mobile apps in their AV and control system designs using Apple’s HomeKit, HealthKit, CloudKit, and WatchKit development platforms. Personal data security is a hot topic in the news along with hacking of connected devices, so think about how this will make your client installations more integrated and secure.
5. It’s a Wi-Fi Phone! A key new iPhone 6 feature is the ability to initiate phone calls using your own phone number, with seamless hand-off between a home’s Wi-Fi network and carrier VoLTE networks. This will impact many areas of communication and possibly place additional burdens on the home network.
6. These are the first iPhones to Support 802.11ac Wi-Fi The new iPhone models include 802.11ac support which, in turn, creates opportunities for the industry to upgrade existing client wireless infrastructures for faster and more reliable networking.

60 SECONDS WITH…
Nick Pidgeon What’s your company and where is it based? Visualization – AV Rack build and Install. Our dedicated rack build facility is based in Maidenhead, Berkshire regularly completing around 500 racks a year for numerous customers in various sectors. You’ll also often find our installation team travelling worldwide partnering on projects from conception to handover. How did you get into the industry? After initially working in the commercial sector of the AV industry and running a large team of rack wireman for a number of years I set up Visualization in 2005. Trading primarily as a rack build facility in the early years it wasn’t long before the team grew and CI was a natural progression. What’s your favourite film? Something Marvel, maybe one of the X-men or Avengers. Let’s be honest it would be pretty cool to be a superhero if we didn’t spend our days working in CI. What’s your favourite album? Paolo Nutini – Sunny Side Up. This is permanently in my car when the sun’s shining. What’s your favourite project and why? As a services member all projects completed by our team are on our customers behalf with complete anonymity. That being said when our customers’ clients are completely open minded to the possibilities available from the CI sector, this always leads to great integration and satisfying results.
Which custom installation technology do you consider the most important today and why? The ability to transmit over a single twisted pair cable. If we compare this to ten years ago when everything required a unique cable and often resulting in distance concerns, we now manage to send a vast majority down one cable – Crestron and AMX have embraced this. How long have you been a CEDIA member? Since 2012. What do your consider your biggest achievement as a CEDIA member? Becoming a Professional Services member and the first in our field to have this accreditation. What’s the biggest issue for custom installation businesses today and how can they deal with it? With technology now being an integral part of most clients’ day to day lives, combined with the increasing availability to directly source and consequently drive the price of this aspect; it’s important we as an industry don’t undervalue the service we provide in each project. If there was one thing you could change in the industry what would it be? Industry standards should not be a choice but an obligation. If the industry was more regulated the quality of installations would be also. If you weren’t in the custom installation sector, what would you like to be doing and why? I love what we do. What else would I rather be??? Oh except maybe I could be Iron Man. He gets to play with gadgets and be a superhero.

CEDIA RELEASES NEW WHITE PAPERS
FrEE White papers
The CEDIA team has been busy putting pen to paper over the last few months, developing an array of white papers, suitable to both integrators and specifiers. INDUSTRY RESOURCES
At the time of membership renewals, many commented that one of the key reasons that they remain a CEDIA member is the resources which are available to them. It is for this reason that CEDIA puts great emphasis on introducing new white papers as often as possible.
Prevent, and explores different examples of how to recover the five most common problems with home technology systems. The document clarifies the first actions to take in repairing hardware, software and the original design of the system. It addresses the ‘Do’s’ and ‘Don’ts’ of Troubleshooting, including: Do ‘Check all equipment to identify if any software/firmware updates are necessary’ and Don’t ‘Make changes to the system midway through the signal path’. The white paper also covers basic HDMI troubleshooting guidelines and identifies the problem and offers a solution.

the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, the white paper explains exactly what is required in a Safe System of Work. The document also discusses the ECS occupational card scheme. CEDIA has recently formed an alliance with the ECS to create the ‘Home Technology Integrator’ ECS card. This is an ECS Related Discipline Card and entitles the holder to carry out unsupervised work on a building site. The white paper covers other useful resources, topics covered in CEDIA’s one-day Health & Safety Course and the importance of demonstrating the competence that owning an ECS card brings.
RESOURCES FOR SPECIFIERS
Specifiers are an important audience for CEDIA and thanks to a number of focus groups, the association better understands the needs of these professionals. To successfully work together, designers and custom installers need to be able to understand each other and the terminology used. This white paper allows design professionals to gain a better understanding of the terminology used in the home technology industry, with over 100 words and phrases. As well as explaining what words such as Ethernet, cabling and HDMI mean, the document also includes an explanation for CEDIA and a list of frequently asked questions. The white paper answers ‘Can homeowners install their own residential electronic systems?’ ‘How big is the home integration market?’, and ‘What are the benefits of hiring a CEDIA Certified professional?’

HOME TECHNOLOGY CLIENT QUESTIONNAIRE The ‘Home Technology Client Questionnaire’ document is designed to be used by interior designers and architects to help them bring greater clarity and definition to a client’s home technology brief. The white paper will guide design professionals on the right questions to ask in the consultation stage of a client meeting. It is split into three categories: audio, video and other items, as a guideline for the designer to determine the type of technology required and the level of complexity that is involved. This will ensure an easier planning process for the design professional when looking at the aesthetics of a scheme, and how technology might fit within that design. It will also be a useful document to discuss with a CEDIA member when they are briefed to deliver the home technology solution for a project.

CEDIA SUPPORTS THE IET Blane Judd, Chair of the IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) Standards TC2.4 DC Power Systems talks through the relationship the IET has established with CEDIA. Low and extra low voltage direct current (d.c.) power distribution offers an enabling infrastructure to manage the increasing numbers of direct current power devices in buildings – such as consumer electronics, building services, IT equipment, as well as solar photovoltaic and battery systems. It allows end users to avoid unnecessary power conversion steps, with potential benefits including carbon savings, energy efficiency improvements and optimisation of space utilisation in buildings. Despite the strong growth of d.c. powered electronic devices essential to connected systems in buildings, d.c. power distribution has not had the same treatment as a.c. power either in the market or in standards world. Following industry consultation, IET Standards recognised the opportunity to work with key stakeholders to develop a Code of Practice in this area, and provide confidence to end users in the possibilities and appropriate application routes for (LV and ELV) d.c. in buildings.

“We were absolutely thrilled to receive the award for ‘Best Media Room over £15,000’. While obviously proud of our work, our main reason for entering the 2014 awards was to better understand the process so we could achieve our goal of winning in 2015. To have fulfilled this ambition a year early is fantastic, and I’m immensely proud of my team for all of their hard work. The night itself AWARDS was AWARDS great fun; it was good to meet soPARTICIPATION many industry colleagues in such PARTICIPATION an impressive environment. “As a journalist writing about both home interiors and technology, CEDIA members provide me with year round inspiration. Their projects and installations help me to convince editors that technology, even in the most traditional looking homes, is now relevant, genuinely useful and more than newsworthy.” Chris Haslam, Freelance Journalist
“We are all very proud of winning the award for the ‘Best Yacht Installation’, and to be recognised with a ‘Highly commended award’ for another Marine project in the same category is overwhelming. We have a dedicated team that is passionate about getting the correct design and the right technology together for the perfect project and in a very demanding sector of the industry it is imperative that we exceed clients expectations. We are often given requests to push the boundaries of technology and for us to receive such acknowledgement and recognition from CEDIA for our efforts is something we are very excited about. This year’s event was one of the best and largest I have been to! I have never seen so many companies from our industry in one room all competing for the top prize, and the show of support from technology distributors, manufacturers, etc was great.” James Jackson, Sensory International
“The CEDIA awards are truly a showcase of the exceptional work that we and our peers are carrying out across the globe. To be shortlisted for awards that include companies from across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and Pakistan is hugely rewarding in itself and to be awarded the winning project is an amazing achievement for everyone involved, and fantastic recognition for the extremely high standards that we set ourselves. This award is particularly close to my heart as it recognises the technical quality of installation that we adhere to on every project, regardless of budget or scale, and I feel it really sums up our attitude to home technology solutions – making sure that every single element is finished to the very highest level, regardless of whether it’s even on show. Congratulations to all of the winners and those shortlisted – it’s amazing to be involved in such a fantastic industry.” Simon Fulstow, Sona Projects

ON THE ROAD Steve Carter joined CEDIA as Business Development Manager in May this year and has since been out on the road visiting UK members up and down the country. Already a well-known figure in the residential custom installation sector, Steve has over twenty years’ experience in product development at JVC. Steve joined CEDIA with the aim of helping the association to build closer relationships with the members and forge new partnerships with key industry representatives throughout the UK.
“I am excited to have been given this great opportunity to work with a great network of customers, but also to support them at the highest level” comments Steve. “My aim is to be the customer facing point of support and to communicate the benefits of becoming a CEDIA accredited company. I hope that my knowledge of the market and technology combined with my approach of meeting the customers face to face and understanding their business and their challenges, will bring many more success stories for the association in the years to come”.
Robert De Rosa, Technical Director at Raid Systems Ltd
“Steve’s visit highlighted that CEDIA is keen to build on the relationships with their members. As an AV company based in Scotland it was refreshing to chat face to face with Steve and give our views on training, exhibitions and the importance of our relationship with CEDIA. We feel that Steve’s positive approach to connecting with CEDIA members / non-members, listening to their views and providing information on CEDIA objectives is important. With the backing of CEDIA and its members we feel that this approach will be beneficial for the future of the industry and its professionals.”
Steve has jumped feet first into his role and has been visiting both trade suppliers and home technology professionals. CEDIA offers its members a range of useful white papers, training courses and event support, but sometimes a face to face discussion is needed to explain how these resources can help a business. This new approach seems to be working, as those members who Steve has visited, have provided some great feedback.
Phil Cotton, Design Director at Finite Solutions
“It’s great to see CEDIA getting out visiting its members at their premises. This engagement is key to understanding the daily challenges CEDIA accredited companies face and discussing what initiatives CEDIA can do to help.”
Mike Beatty, Managing Director at Pulse Marketing
“It was really good to see Steve at Pulse HQ and extremely beneficial. It is great to know that CEDIA is focused on building relationships and helping to develop business. This can only be a good thing for the industry.”

VAT UPDATE
FrEE White papers
FrEE White papers
Iain Shaw, Partner of Brilliant Lighting explains the ins and outs of the recent VAT announcement and the impact this will have on our industry. For once we have some good news from the VAT man. The August update to VAT Notice 708 (Building and Construction) from HMRC confirms that central controls for light, heat and ventilation, including intelligent lighting systems, have been added to the list of ‘ordinarily’ incorporated items in dwellings.
“Sub paragraph 13.8.1 has been amended to include central controls for light, heat and ventilation as examples of articles ‘ordinarily’ incorporated in dwellings. Intelligent lighting systems are also accepted but not the accompanying remote control handsets.” This small change highlights that there is a significant shift in the thinking around lighting control systems and residential development. What this means is that where a new build or renovation is eligible for a reduced rate of VAT, any lighting controls installed may also be eligible for a reduced rate. This makes lighting controls more affordable in a residential context, which has to be a good thing. When designed and installed properly, lighting controls can make a well-designed lighting scheme easier-to-use, energy-efficient and contribute to improved home security. Intelligent lighting systems are great and clients love them. However, if it is installed without any consideration to the lighting

they are being asked to control, then the client might not be too pleased. Intelligent lighting systems are only intelligent when they are linked to good lighting. They should be an enabling technology; it’s not their job to take centre-stage. A well-mannered lighting control system’s job is to control beautifully designed lighting schemes intelligently and
So we have a great opportunity. Lighting controls are recognised as an everyday, “ordinarily” incorporated item in dwellings. Let’s make the most of it.

ULTRA HD & 4K RESOLUTION
HAS GOT THE CI SECTOR
BUZZING! But as with any new technology upgrade, it’s perhaps not going to be quite as straightforward to implement as we’d all want.
One major challenge is HDCP 2.2, the latest evolution of the HDCP copy protection designed to create a secure connection between a source and a display.
of the CEA, “these updated attributes will help ensure consumers get the most out of this exciting new technology and will provide additional certainty in the marketplace.”
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) in its revised Ultra High-Definition Display Characteristics V2 guidelines, effective from September 2014, has defined that at least one of the 3840x2160 HDMI digital inputs on a display “shall support HDCP revision 2.2 or equivalent content protection” for it to be an Ultra HD installation.
However, HDCP2.2 gives rise to some concern regarding the future of Ultra HD content through HDMI.
For Gary Shapiro, president and CEO
Here’s what David Meyer, Managing Director at Kordz has to say on the subject:
“The HDCP handshake occurs in HDMI with a key
CEDIA COMMUNICATES
exchange from source to sink through the DDC (Display Data Channel), which runs parallel to the actual HDCP encrypted high speed data lanes. This has always been the case with HDMI since inception (and DisplayPort, I might add). The exchange protocols and HDCP version is embedded within the HDMI transmit and receive chipsets in hardware, and typically cannot be upgraded.” So,
HDCP
2.2
is
not
“backward
compatible”. If the source device is using an older version of HDCP then it can be connected to an HDCP 2.2 enabled display. So, a Blu-ray player can send 1080p to a 2.2-enabled receiver, or to a 4K TV, with no issues. Many new 4K devices don’t even support HDCP 2.2.
A 4K
screen that may have been bought in the last 18 months will not necessarily be able to display 4K resolution studio content in the future.
“Whether to use encryption at all, and to what degree, is actually in the hands of the content owners, namely the movie studios,” adds David Meyer. “What we don’t know yet is whether a decision will come down to enforce encryption of future content using HDCP 2.2. For example, they may determine that any content at 2160p resolution (4K/ UHD) at a frame rate of 60fps or higher, regardless of colour space or bit depth be encrypted with HDCP 2.2.”
within just a few months to head-off and handle this new HDMI challenge!”
Hamish Neale, EMEA Sales & Marketing Director at Leaf agrees:
“If, for example, a matrix Switch or an AV receiver is incorporated into the system and it is not HDCP 2.2 compliant, then regardless of the HDCP2.2 compatibility of the source device and screen there will be problems playing encrypted content. No image, an error message or some other low value content will be displayed instead.” “Unfortunately non-HDCP 2.2-compliant devices cannot simply be upgraded via firmware to become 2.2,” adds Chris Pinder, from HD Connectivity. “HDCP 2.2 is implemented within a new physical chip as part of device hardware. The biggest repercussion of this is that for our client’s most popular video source (settop-boxes) to deliver what the CEA would regard as ‘proper’ Ultra HD 4K content via HDMI, service providers will have the upheaval of providing and upgrading subscribers with a shiny new box.”
“There’s one more element to the HDCP 2.2 mystery that’s worth keeping an eye on,” adds David Meyer. That’s cable length. DCP have introduced a mechanism to limit cable length, so that any transmission longer than 20m will be blocked. At least, that’s what it says in the spec – enforcement may be another matter. How this translates to connectivity lengths and/or formats, or even how the dynamic of interacting with other formats such as HDBaseT modulation, remains to be seen.” “It is important to note however that HDBaseT only modulates the raw data, and is therefore agnostic in regards to HDCP version, so theoretically no problem there. If an HDBaseT extender is decoding HDMI for reasons such as audio de-embed or various other possibilities, then it may be rendered incompatible with HDCP 2.2. The key is to look out for specific reference to HDCP 2.2 compatibility in product specifications or support documents. Ask the vendors.” A lack of 4K content is another problem holding back potential growth in Ultra HD. This issue is also inextricably linked to HDCP2.2 compliance. Here’s what Steve Venuti, President of standards body HDMI Licensing has to say on the subject.
“As with HDCP 1.X, the Hollywood studios look for adoption of the technology before releasing content that requires encryption. The studios are hesitant to release 4K content utilizing the 1.X HDCP technology, and are looking for enough adoption of HDCP 2.2 before releasing 4K content. We are now seeing many of the new devices that offer 4K/60 functionality adopting HDCP 2.2 in their products. We anticipate that once there are enough devices in the market with HDP 2.2, the market will begin to see a widespread release of 4K premium content.”
“These updated attributes will help ensure consumers get the most out of this exciting new technology and will provide additional certainty in the marketplace”
“It’s even possible that they capture all 2160p content regardless of frame rate, meaning even formats defined under HDMI 1.4 back in 2009, being as low as 24fps, could even become subject to this. We simply don’t know yet. So what would it mean? Well, any hardware which is not HDCP 2.2 compatible – and that’s a lot – could NOT be used in any transmission of HDCP 2.2 encrypted content from source to sink. For example, AV receivers, splitters and matrix switchers, etc. Some AVRs are already available with at least one HDCP 2.2 input, and many (but not all) UHD displays also have at least one compatible input, but it’s early days.”
GARY SHAPIRO “From this, integrators can deduce that until shiny new set-top-boxes become available, premium 4K content with HDCP 2.2 encryption will be delivered either directly to the display via a download/app service, or via high-end media servers such as the Sony X10 or Kaleidescape.” Chris continues, “Eventually, 4K Blu-ray players will arrive also, but they are a good few months, maybe more than a year away from appearing. Either way, most HD video distribution manufacturers will likely already have HDCP 2.2-compliant systems already available or launching
Until more CE vendors have implemented HDCP 2.2, then film studios will clearly not be overly keen to popularise 4k content. Ultra HD has great potential for CI, but the technology upgrade may not be as seamless or as easy as we would all hope.
