uper Bowl XXXIX was a game played between the AFC champions New England Patriots and the NFC champions Philadelphia Eagles to decide the Super Bowl winner 13 years ago for the 2004 season. The game was played on February 6, 2005, at Alltel Stadium (now known as EverBank Field) in Jacksonville, Florida, the first time the Super Bowl was played in that city. The Patriots, who entered the Super Bowl after compiling a 14–2 regular season record, became the first team since the 1997–1998 Denver Broncos to win consecutive Super Bowls. New England also became the second team after the Dallas Cowboys to win three Super Bowls in four years. The Eagles were making their second Super Bowl appearance after posting a 13–3 regular season record.

The Food IQ GIRLS -- Its Not Cheap to be Sick

I
remember the first time my grandma tried cannabis. She was 80 years old. We were sitting in my garage in Denver back in 2011. I just about fell out of my chair when she said she’d try it. She was 100% serious. But the story is even crazier when I tell you about who my grandma is. She’s a sweet little southern Christian lady named Viola who stills calls me Baby Doll. You know what? I’m not mad at that nickname. We’ve always been close.

job,” Malcolm Butler!
This week’s blessing is “Your Assignment”. By Max Lucado:
2. David Tyree’s helmet catch: Most coaches would cringe if their quarterback threw into triple coverage in the middle of the field while scrambling amid a broken play. But that’s what New York Giants star Eli Manning did, and Tyree famously managed to pin the pass against his helmet on the other end of the 32-yard hookup with 59 seconds to go. Four plays later, Manning hit Plaxico Burress for the game-winning TD as the Giants shocked the previously undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Stir up the gift of God that is in you (2 Timothy 1:6, emphasis mine). You be you. Don’t be your parents or your grandparents. You can admire them, appreciates them, and learn from them. But you can not be them. You aren’t them. “Don’t compare yourself with others. “Each of you must take responsibilty for doing the creative best you can with your own life” (Galatians 6:4-5). Jesus was insistent on this. After the resurrection he appeared to some of is followers. He gave Peter a specific pastoral assignment that included great sacrifice. The apostle responded by pointing at John and saying, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, ‘If I to live until I come back, that is not your business. You follow me’” (John 21:21-22). In other words, don’t occupy yourself with another person’s assignment; stay focused on your own. With the Super Bowl luming I want to look back at some of the great Super Bowl moments. This is only game time moments, because I could easly talk about the wardrobe malfunction or the Micheal Jackson show or ever Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner. So Here we Go!!! 1. Malcolm Butler’s INT: Pivotal. Shocking. Unforgettable. The New England Patriots’ undrafted rookie cornerback made the rarest of plays, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat by intercepting Russell Wilson at the goal line with 20 seconds left to preserve a 28-24 win in Super Bowl XLIX. In the process, Butler derailed the Seattle Seahawks’ bid to become the league’s latest dynasty and launched a lifetime of second guessing for the legions who skewered Seattle coach Pete Carroll for not directing Wilson to hand off to Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, who’d already scored once this day. Last, yet certainly not least, Butler saved Patriots QB Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick from the narrative that they were “only” 3-3 in Super Bowls at the time. Way to just “do your
3. Wide right: That’s where Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood’s 47-yard field-goal try (barely) missed with 4 seconds left. The Giants hung on for a 20-19 win in Super Bowl XXV, and the Bills would never get any closer to a title despite reaching Super Sunday three more times. 4. Mike Jones’ tackle: With the Tennessee Titans 10 yards away from a potential game-tying touchdown with 5 seconds to play in Super Bowl XXXIV, Jones, an unheralded St. Louis Rams linebacker, limited WR Kevin Dyson to a 9-yard gain — just shy of the goal line — on the game’s last play. 5. Roethlisberger-to-Holmes TD: What was better, Ben Roethlisberger’s precision strike to the back corner of the end zone — rifled through three Arizona Cardinals — or Santonio Holmes’ ability to snatch it while keeping his toes down as he fell out of bounds with 35 seconds on the clock? Beautifully executed all the way around, and it gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a record sixth Lombardi Trophy as they rallied for a 27-23 victory in Super Bowl XLIII. On a more somber note Friday Jan. 26th 2018, we lost a great man for the Texas Rangers and the community. Norman Lyons Jr. went home to be with the Lord and he wil be missed by his friends and family and me. He always had an open dooor policy for me and was always willing to help with the paper, so at 411 he will be missed.

Billy “White Shoes” Johnson and John Lucas
Billy “White Shoes” Johnson
John Lucas
Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, is a former American football player who played in the National Football League (NFL) from 1974 through 1988. He is known for being one of the first players to display elaborate celebrations in the end zone.
John Lucas, born on October 31, 1953 in Durham, North Carolina is a retired American professional basketball player and coach. Lucas attended the University of Maryland (B.A. - Education 1976) where he was an all-America performer in basketball and tennis. Lucas received his M.A. in education from the University of San Francisco.
Johnson earned his famous nickname as a high schooler at Chichester High School in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, where he dyed his shoes as part of a dare.[1] Ever since then, he has been referred to by his nickname. He was a very fast athlete, but his 5’9” size turned off prominent universities from recruiting him. Billy ended up going to Widener College in Pennsylvania, a small Division III school, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. While there, he had a highly successful career, but was barely noticed by professional scouts. He was eventually discovered by the Houston Oilers, who drafted him in the fifteenth round of the 1974 NFL Draft. Johnson made the squad as a kickoff returner, with his speed and quickness becoming an occasional part of the offense. As a rookie, he began celebrating touchdowns with a dance known as the “Funky Chicken”, a dance based on a song from soul singer Rufus Thomas.[2] It was one of the first touchdown celebrations in league history.[2] The dances, along with his footwear, made Johnson popular among Oilers fans. As a kick returner, Johnson returned five punts for touchdowns, along with two kickoffs, in his first four years with the Oilers, and added 12 more touchdowns on offense. He was selected to the Pro Bowl as a kick returner in 1975, and was named MVP of the game, during which he returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. He made another Pro Bowl appearance in 1977. In 1978, he suffered a knee injury that caused him to miss most of the next two seasons and lingered with him for the rest of his career. When he returned in 1980, he was no longer the kick returner, serving only as a backup wide receiver. In 1994, Johnson was selected as the punt returner on the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.[5] His days at Widener have also earned him a selection into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Role Model: The Dante and Renetta Wesley Story Third in the Series: The NFL Power Couple by Cynthia Zordich
A
s a member of the NFL family, there is endless opportunity for personal and professional growth through numerous league outreach programs, as well as fantastic networking opportunities at a national level. This is the time to define who you are, to hone your own talents, to create your own identity. This is the time to take advantage of the resources available to you. This is no time to be passive. The NFL window opens wide, but closes quickly. Where the player is concerned, the goal is to establish ‘parallel lines’ early on in your NFL career. As a player spouse, your goal should be to stand tall on your own and carry the dignity of knowing that you were not lost in a number, not hidden in the shadows, but an integral part of a partnership and celebrated for your own contributions to its success. In the end, you will have established yourselves as an NFLPC and become future ambassadors of the league.
The Role Model: The Dante and Renetta Wesley Story Role Models. Often we look to the stars, the athletes, the musicians to find them. We model ourselves after their style, their cars, their clout. But often, lying in obscurity, are the true models of our culture, lost under the haze of celebrity. These are the humble, the patient, the forgiving. They know their place in the world and inhabit it with humility and grace. They understand their role and respect both the opportunity and responsibility that comes with the position. Renetta Wesley is a role model and what I would consider the ideal model for all future players when considering a life partner. Raised in a small country town by a family of God, Renetta Wesley is patient, she is kind, she does not envy or boast, she is not proud, not rude, not self-seeking or easily angered, she keeps no records of wrongs. She does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth, because she knows the truth always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. There are those who read poems while standing in pretty dresses and there are those, like Renetta, who live them while standing for purpose. • Dante Wesley was a third-year veteran defensive back for the Carolina Panthers. It was a crisp morning heading to Spartanburg, South Carolina, yet the air was thick with regret and burden. Married for a little over three years, Dante’s SUV was loaded for training camp, but his mind was packed with guilt. God was pulling him in one direction, but temptation was leading him astray. “I had been lying, cheating, living a double life,” confesses Dante. He had put himself on trial years
6
before. He had assessed the darkness of his ways: the clubs, the liquor, the women, the NFL lifestyle and all that it implies. Even with prayer, he found he was too weak to be faithful. Even knowing that he loved his wife and knew he had a good woman, a woman who was not blind to his deception. “I always knew he was lying,” admits Renetta. “There were so many times when he would try to get out of situations. No eye contact, sneaking away to take a call, covering his cell phone. But, I also knew he was struggling. I listened to him pray when he went to bed. You can tell when your spouse is struggling with his conscience.” One Sunday, Renetta was leaving church when her pastor stopped her and took her hand. “Pray for patience,” was all he said. She had always felt she was patient and knew she would do anything to help a person in need. Still, she did as she was told and prayed for patience. While Dante is not clear why his confession to Renetta came out at that particular moment, he considers it a defining moment in his life and marriage. To Renetta, he revealed that although he had been trying to get a hold of himself for years, he could not resist temptation. Like Samson, he was vulnerable to seduction. In the end, he decided that when women want something, they will get it, whether it be your hair or your soul. While his confession unloaded burden, its purpose was far greater than a mere cleansing. Telling, Dante knew, would not make him stronger, nor help him resist future indiscretions. What he needed was a plan. “As he was talking, I was praying on him and thanking God,” shares Renetta. “I thought of the pastor and the more I prayed, the more he opened up.” Adds Dante, “I was just so happy that it came out like that - from me to her. Not in the papers, not in the street, not some woman coming up to her. It was just me and her, together. I had never spoken to Renetta like that before. Just revealing my whole life. That situation opened up our whole marriage.” Still, the liquor would pour, the women would prey and most notably, Dante was wise enough to acknowledge his predisposition. More than redemption, he needed help navigating through the distractions of the league. “Come, be with me, he would ask,” remembers Renetta. “And, because he wanted me there, I went. Whether it was a club, a function, even a night with the guys, I was there.” Dante would wear her presence like a bullet proof vest. Soon, it was natural, not only for him, but his teammates. “Renetta became one of us,” Dante says with a smile. “She was easy to be with. She did her own thing. We learned that we have fun out together. When girls came up to me, all I had to say was, ‘You know my wife is in here,’ and it was that simple. At the end of the night, after a few drinks, the
www.411sportsnews.com
girl looking good to me - was her.” Aside from a desire to be a faithful husband, came Dante’s desire to be a role model for his children. “It got to a point, after the birth of my daughter, when I asked myself, is this how I would want someone treating my little girl? And then, when I had my son, I took a good look at my life and the reality that he would pattern his behavior after my reckless lifestyle? I knew it was time to break the cycle.” Yet, growing up without a father - he didn’t know where to begin. Again, he turned to Renetta for guidance. • Dante was brought up in a single-parent home. Brought up without a father present in his life, brought up by a working mother, his world revolved around one person: himself, and one thing: ball. By the time Renetta met the junior business major at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, he was not considered a major prospect. Renetta, an elementary education major, was walking down the hallway, minding her own business, heading to class. Always the instinctive player, Dante saw this beautiful woman walking by the door and jumped out of his seat, in the middle of class, to catch her. Dante and Renetta exchanged their information and this is the beginning of the journey. What intrigued Dante most was her lack of football knowledge or interest. When the season started, he asked her to come to his games and because he asked, she went. When he asked her to be there for his pro day, she saw nothing remarkable about his times, nor did she understand the impact they would have on his future. She was only there because he asked her to be. And when agents started to call, it was Renetta that he wanted next to him and she was, albeit silent. Soon after the combine, Dante’s numbers were public knowledge and his draft rating was high enough to foresee the inevitable. Already a middle school teacher back home, Renetta worked to take her feelings out of the relationship and prepared to let go. Instead, she was met with a marriage proposal. “I was letting go to avoid getting my heart broken. I was happy for him that he would go off and live his dream, but at the same time, I was in love with him. I was already teaching and felt it was time to set him free. When Dante came home and asked me to marry him I asked, ‘Who? Me? You want to carry* me with you?’” *Carry me with you. This expression was new to me. It had a self-deprecating ring to it. Many would be too proud to say it, too self-righteous to even think it. But not Renetta Wesley. I personally sat on this concept of carrying for a few days after our interview. In the end, I softened to it. Truth is, in any solid marriage, we do carry each other. We set off on our personal journeys to pursue our personal legend and along the way we invite another for the ride. If we choose correctly, that person will push us to continue pursuit, encourage our vision, redirect us when we go off course and yes, carry us when we are weak, when we are lost and misdirected. Ironically, it would be Renetta who would do the bulk of carrying as she helped Dante become the man, husband and fa-

Could the Mavericks get a first-round draft pick for Wesley Matthews
There have been eight trades involving first-round draft picks since June. What can those trades tell us about their value?
If
NBA players had an approval rating, Wesley Matthews might rise and fall more than any other player on the Mavericks. After defending James Harden well in in crunch time or nailing seven threes in a game, he’s an underrated role player. But any time he dribbles, drives, or even steps foot inside the three-point line on offense, he’s an overpaid, washed up, hasbeen who the Mavs never should have signed in the first place. He’s a flawed non-All-Star level player, but an excellent role player with two select skills that won’t lose value in the league anytime soon: three-point shooting and perimeter defense. Mavericks fans’ relationship with Matthews has always been complicated, but he’s never so divisive than when his name appears in trade rumors. Marc Stein reported yesterday that “it would take a first-round pick to get [Wes Matthews].” This, of course, went over well with the ever so agreeable NBA Twitter, where everyone came to a consensus and quickly moved on, as they do around the trade deadline (that is not what happened). Wesley Matthews by himself doesn’t seem to be worth a first-round pick, especially when teams are so hesitant to move them. But since June, the NBA has seen eight trades that actually resulted in a first-round draft pick changing hands. In that context, the idea of a Matthews-centric deal
bringing a first-rounder to Dallas seems plausible:
pers pull off a three-team deal that removes Danilo Gallinari from the Nuggets cap sheet and nets the Hawks Houston’s 2018 first rounder from the Paul trade, a pick the Hawks will almost certainly receive since it’s only protected in the top-three.
June 19, 2017: Boston and Philadelphia swap top-three picks (it worked out just great).
Gallinari is a better player than Matthews, but he’s averaged just 54 games per year since emerging on the scene with the Knicks in 2009. That was apparently not enough to dissuade the Clippers from giving up a first rounder.
June 22, 2017: On Draft Night, Philly trades a 2020 OKC first to Orlando for rights to Anzejs Pasecniks. June 28, 2017: Houston flips every player the casual NBA fan still thinks plays for the Rocketsand a 2018 first-round pick for Chris Paul from the LA Clippers. June 30, 2017: Minnesota trades Ricky Rubio to Utah for OKC’s protected 2018 first rounder (the Timberwolves will only receive this pick if the Thunder finish outside of the lottery).
Is Wes Matthews more or less valuable than Ricky Rubio? Hindsight doesn’t help Rubio’s cause, but where would he rank among starting point guards in a league flushed with PGs? Here are the players that are definitely better than Rubio: Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul, John Wall, Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry, Kemba Walker, Mike Conley, Goran Dragic, Jrue Holiday, Jeff YOU NEED EXPOSURE! Teague, and Eric Bledsoe (we’ll get to him). That’s ASK US ABOUT OUR FULL COLOR 13 players, and there are at least eight young point guards that could pass BLOWOUT SALE him in a year or two: Dennis Smith Jr., D’Angelo Russell, Frank Ntilikina, “FEATURE YOUR BUSINESS” Malcolm Brogdon, Lonzo CLUB ï RESTURANT ï REAL ESTATE Ball, De’Aaron Fox, and both Dejounte and Jamal ï CAR DEALERSHIP ï INSURANCE ï Murray (both).
ETC... SPACE IS GOING FAST!!!!! ADVERTISE NOW!!! GET HALF OFF STANDARD ADS
Rubio might have been an average point guard at the time of this trade, but his play this season and the young crop behind him are quickly pushing him and his coif hair right off the board. A proven 3-and-D wing player has to be more valuable than a point guard who can’t shoot, right?
469-249-2411 ACT NOW DON’T WAIT Jan 30-Feb 05, 2018
No? Okay, we’ll keep going: July 6, 2017: Denver, Atlanta, and the LA Clip-
www.411sportsnews.com
July 13, 2018: Toronto sends a 2018 lottery-protected first rounder and a 2018 second rounder to Brooklyn to persuade the Nets to take DeMare Carroll off their hands. The Raptors receive Justin Hamilton in the deal, but waive him the day after the deal. The Mavericks have the cap space to perform a similar deal, but more on that later. August 30, 2017: Boston (apparently) fleeces Cleveland into giving up Kyrie Irving for an injured 5’8 point guard, Jae Crowder, and Brooklyn’s 2018 first rounder. November 7, 2017: Milwaukee sends Greg Monroe, their 2018 protected first rounder, and their 2018 protected second rounder to Phoenix for Eric Bledsoe. If the Bucks finish between 11-16 in the NBA Lottery then the Suns will receive this pick, but if they finish outside that range, the protections decrease until 2021 when the Suns own the pick outright. Eric Bledsoe isn’t an All-Star; even in the Eastern Conference he wouldn’t be considered an All-Star. Like Gallo, he’s had his injury issues, averaging 50 games per year since entering the league in 2010. This figure doesn’t include last season when the Suns inexplicably sat Bledsoe for the last 15 games of the season. In the cases of Rubio, Gallinari, and Bledsoe, the league has (if anything) proven that severely flawed non-All-Star level players with select skills can garner a first-round draft pick. All three of those players were traded to teams that got just desperate enough to send a first rounder for them: • Utah was attempting to replace maybe their third-best player in franchise history. • The Clippers talked themselves into Gallinari’s select skills and found themselves (for once) with actual assets to obtain him. • Milwaukee decided to turn the corner from rebuilding to contending right away and were tired of being the “young team” in the room. If the Timberwolves, Nuggets/Hawks, and Suns could find a way to trade their flawed non-All-Star level players, why can’t the Mavericks get a firstround pick for Wes Matthews?

The Role Model: continued from page 6 ther he so desired to be. And for this he would be forever grateful. Now engaged to a fiancé in the NFL, Renetta’s simple country life would soon collide with two forces of (human) nature: truth and lust. “That’s when all the changes in Dante happened,” she reflects. Adds Dante, “I was already there. We weren’t married yet. Being a player, everything is pretty much open to you. Every girl wants to be with you. I knew I loved Renetta, but it’s just - these women on the street. It’s a thrill and all players know what it’s like out there. You get caught up in the sex, the beauty, the status. In the NFL, it’s thrown at you.” Renetta continues, “Right away I saw a change. When I visited, he would show me around. One day I said, ‘Dante, you know where all the clubs are but you haven’t found a home church yet.’” As Renetta saw it, Dante was forgetting all of the things that got him there. She would soon realize that the NFL journey would test their faith and threaten their future together. “I was living reckless,” says Dante. “At the clubs every night, getting in late, messing with so many girls. It was an
early morning practice and I was beat up from the night before. Here I am, a rookie, bent over catching my breath and I heard a voice: ‘IF YOU KEEP LIVING THE WAY YOU’RE LIVING, YOU’RE NOT GOING TO PLAY LONG.’” With divine instruction, Dante went home to set a date. A date that would propel Renetta into a lifestyle like she had never known. At the time, she didn’t stop to think about how marrying Dante would impact her lifestyle. She didn’t think about expensive cars, night clubs, designer clothes and fine champagne. Instead, she worried about the impact her leaving would have on her parents. With three sisters out of the house, who would care for them, cook for them? Who would dye her mother’s hair? Herparents, she would find, would be the least of her worries. • New to the NFL, Renetta was naive to an irreverent force to be reckoned with for many NFL wives and girlfriends: the football mom. From biddy ball on up, many football moms sacrifice self to pro-

They stand in the August heat and the November rain to support their boys. For many, the football mom will be the bow when it is time to pull back and set her arrow free. For others, she will be the ankle weight of guilt and obligation. Shares Dante, “A lot of moms feel like, ‘If it weren’t for me, you would have never made it. Now it’s time for me to sit down.’ That’s a lot of pressure for young guys entering the league. Every guy doesn’t make millions. I see guys that set their parents up and in the end, they have nothing. The parents have everything. Where many moms let go, my mom didn’t. When I was signing autographs, she was right there over my shoulder. My wife would go to the car!” “She wanted to be THAT girl in her son’s life,” shares Renetta. Dante’s mom would go to great lengths to sabotage the new marriage. Renetta stood firm, yet remained respectful. “I knew my place,” she shares. “I was the wife and she was the mother and no one can replace that. I did my part and was kind to her, even when she was hurtful - even when she gave other girls my husband’s phone number. I never confronted her. I knew that line of respect. What was difficult, was seeing how her actions were hurting Dante. Because she was so demanding, it was clear to me why Dante was pulling away from her and I was proud of him for it - proud that he was beginning to stand up for himself.” In reflecting back, Dante says, “If I

Tiger Woods’ play at Farmers gives reasons that he is on a come back While he said the main goal is to be prepared for April and the Masters, Tiger Woods admitted that his first official PGA Tour event in a year comes without the usual thoughts of holding the trophy Sunday. Woods begins play Thursday in the Farmers Insurance Open, the same tournament he has won seven times but where he also missed the cut a year ago in his only PGA Tour start of 2017. A week later he headed to Dubai, where he played just one round before withdrawing, eventually needing a fourth back surgery. That spinal fusion kept him out for six months, but Woods said he is pain free and has been able to prepare better than at any time in the past threeplus years. Still, there is that issue of competitive rust, Woods acknowledged Wednesday during a news conference at Torrey Pines. “My expectations have tempered a little bit because I haven’t played,’’ said Woods, 42, who will play in a sanctioned tournament for just the 21st time since the first of his four back surgeries in 2014. “When I came back off my ACL injury in ‘08 and started playing in ‘09, it was nine months, but I had played a full schedule prior to that. I haven’t
played a full schedule since 2015. It’s been a long time. “To be honest with you, I just want to start playing on the tour and getting into a rhythm of playing a schedule again. I haven’t done that in such a long time, so I don’t know what to expect. I’m going to grind it, give it everything I possibly have; if I put the ball in the right position and make some putts and try to work my way up the board.’’ 1 Woods seems to be painfree. After four back surgeries in less than four years, priority one for Woods, 42, is to stay healthy. That was the case at the Farmers, where he tested his fused back with all sorts of lies. Woods spent so much time in the long grass, Nick Faldo spoke for many when he said before the final round, “He’s pounded the back more than I thought he was going to have to do.” When it was all over, Woods said, “To be able to take cuts like I did, hit out of weird lies, it’s something that I didn’t know that I could do yet because there’s really no rough in Florida right now. It was nice to get out here and do it in competition.”
2 He is fighting wildness with the driver. Woods hit just three of 14 fairways on Friday (71), Saturday (70) and Sunday (72), and some of his misses were off the planet. Although you wouldn’t know it from the stat line, he was better Sunday, when he split the 10th fairway with a 278-yard opening tee shot, bombed a wind-aided drive Assisted Living Facilities at Ada M King 358 yards into the short grass at the first hole, and missed Adult Foster Home in Dallas, Texas a handful of fairways by just Our goal is to assist you in finding the best available a few paces. 3 He has been working on his short game. Woods averaged 27.5 putts per round. He also got up-and-down seven times in nine chances for the second day in a row Saturday, after which he was asked what might have happened without his A+ short game. “It would have been snowing,” Woods said, alluding to a score in the 80s. By the time he nearly holed his pitch shot from just in front of the sixth green Sunday, setting up a tap-in for par, his chipping problems from 2015 seemed like a distant memory. “Yeah, these weren’t down the middle, on the green, hit the first putt, onehand the second one,” Woods said. “These were tough, tough scores. I had to fight for each and every one, and that’s very pleasing. I can grind it out with the best of them.” 4 He still has a nose for the competition. Woods flirted with the cut line in the second round but made it to the weekend with a final-hole birdie. He also scratched out a 2-under 70 in the third round when by his own admission, “I didn’t have it.” Third-round playing partner Brandt Snedeker spoke of being impressed with Woods’ “fight and his grind.” When Woods got to 5-under through 12 holes Sunday, and J.B. Holmes bogeyed, Woods was briefly within five of the lead. He later said he thought a 65 might get him into a playoff, given the windy conditions. 5 His golf mind remains sharp. Woods has won the Farmers seven times, and has two other victories at Torrey, the 2008 U.S. Open and 1991 Junior World. His course knowledge and his usually sharp mental game were a potent one-two punch as he proved the adage that golf is a game of good misses. “I was trying to miss the ball on the correct sides,” he said after the third round, “because I knew I didn’t have it. Trying to give myself the correct angles and I did that most of the day.” He could have said the same after the other three rounds, too. 6. He is still long. Woods took a healthy rip at the ball all week, and often outdrove his younger playing partners, even with a fused back. His 358yard drive at the first hole Sunday, his 10th of the day, left one fan marveling, “I can’t even see that far.”

T
he University of Connecticut is the target of an NCAA investigation into its men’s basketball program. University President Susan Herbst said in a statement Friday the school will cooperate in a “thorough and transparent manner reflective of the model athletic and academic institution we continually strive to be.”
The school said it had begun an NCAA mandated internal review of the men’s basketball program this fall amid an FBI investigation into alleged corruption in college basketball. The focus of the federal probe has been on arrangements made between assistant coaches, shoe companies and financial advisers. As part of that review, UConn retained a law firm — Lightfoot, Franklin and White — that specializes in athletics compliance. It says that firm also will assist in responding to this NCAA inquiry. She made me feel guilty, like, ‘You owe me this.’ I prayed about the situation. In time, I knew when I was right and when I was wrong. It was hard to break away from the hold she had on me, but having a strong woman to encourage me helped.” “What is sad,” follows Renetta, “is that she was so determined to force me out, yet she ended up alienating her son, instead.” Released from the apron strings of demand, Dante evaluated his life purpose. While he was raised without structure, he was determined to provide a stable home for his children. Just as he studied game film each week, Dante began to study the dynamics of family structure. With Renetta’s family as his model, he watched and listened. He asked questions. What they took for granted, he took note. “For me, it was just me, my brother and my mother,” shares Dante. “We never sat down to eat together. It seems a simple thing to do, but it’s important. I know that now.” For Dante Wesley, breaking the cycle is one of his greatest life accomplishments. “It starts with one generation,” he concludes. “One child growing up in a home with his mom and his dad. One dad sitting at the head of the table answering ques-

It starts right here.” In the end, the Wesleys leave a legacy of truth, forgiveness, faith and a desire for family structure. Their candor is rare. They do not fear the truth, but rejoice in it, because they know the truth always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. I, personally, have learned much from Renetta Wesley. I am in awe of her unique ability to see things, not as they affect her, but as they affect the people she loves. In Renetta, Dante found the true vision of himself. It is said that we all have an inner guide. A light within that protects us, that leads us to our true purpose and inner legend. Many fail to recognize this blessing and many more fail to search for truth, to assess their actions, to acknowledge their faults. They ignore the voices, shun the light and continue down the path of darkness. Always the instinctive player, Dante Wesley was keen enough to recognize his inner guide and he jumped out of his chair, in the middle of class, to catch her. In his darkest hours, he turned within, he turned to God, and he turned to her, for guidance. Over and over again, she would be a light force in his life, this small country girl with the patience of Job and the strength to carry a hundred men. Renetta Wesley, a role model. 9 Reasons to End the War on Marijuana By: AL HARRINGTON to remember, this is a God-fearing old lady from the South who never touched a drug in her life. She didn’t drink alcohol. She didn’t even like going out to restaurants. My grandma, man … old school to the core. But she was desperate for an alternative. Nothing’s been the same for her since she tried it.
But the story is even crazier when I tell you about who my grandma is. She’s a sweet little southern Christian lady named Viola who stills calls me Baby Doll. You know what? I’m not mad at that nickname. We’ve always been close. And the other thing is, she’s always been scared of marijuana. She grew up believing what the government said about marijuana — about how it was as dangerous as other Schedule I drugs likes ecstasy and heroin. You know, all that stuff we all heard about how it made you a criminal, a bad person … a thug. So back in 2011, it was me and my grandma — the woman who still carries a Bible with her when she travels — hanging out in the garage I had turned into a den. And we were just sitting there talking when she dropped it on me: She had been struggling with chronic pain for a long time. It was a day I’ll never forget. My grandma had never told me about her pain before. She started telling me about the constant throbbing behind her eyes. It was getting worse, to the point where it was affecting her vision. It was tough for me to see her like that. “Is that you, Baby Doll? I can barely see you there.” She’d say stuff like that. It was hard. She told me that her doctors prescribed her painkillers and other medicine. They weren’t helping, and they were making her lethargic and depressed. She was miserable. It had been going on for years. Marijuana was already legal in Colorado, but I didn’t mess with it yet. I was still in the league and the NBA tested for it. But even more than that, I still had antiquated views about it. I viewed it the way I saw it as a kid, as a scary drug and nothing more than that. But on her second day staying with me, she shocked me by agreeing to try it. You have

Now you know a little about my grandma. She’s a cool one. So lemme ask you, is my grandma doing something wrong? According to federal laws, she is. She’s committing a crime. Is that where we’re at? Are we really trying to put grandmas in prison for using marijuana to treat pain? I’m gonna tell you what I think is the most important statistic about marijuana. First we’re gonna have to go all the way back to the ’80s. Back to Orange, New Jersey, where I grew up and lived until I was in high school. You know how some people are always being like, “You don’t know where I come from?” Orange is the kind of place where people say that. If you know, you just know. To picture where I lived, envision a huge U-shaped apartment complex. There must have been hundreds of apartments in that complex. In the middle of the U, there was this big field of grass where me and the other kids played football, kickball and baseball when we were 10, 11, 12 years old. Almost every day, after we were done playing, everyone would go over to the little convenience store on the corner of Tremont and Scotland. I’d usually get a quarter water and bag of chips. Maybe some Now and Laters. Run me about 65 cents total. In the back of the store they had arcade games — Street Fighter and NBA Jam. If we had any money left over, we’d play those games. Otherwise we’d be outside chillin with all the other kids. I came up during the War on Drugs. I didn’t know what it was called. But I knew what I saw. Almost every week, at some time or another, a police car would roll up to the corner. If there was a group of young black men standing on a corner, it was only a matter of time. That was just normal for
www.411sportsnews.com
In Orange, it was mostly marijuana they were looking for. I’m sure there was hard stuff there, but it seemed like it was mostly weed. It was the ghetto — and the ghetto means cheap weed. So people would come from all around to get it. Sometimes, kids got picked up. Sometimes you didn’t hear from them after that. Today I’m 37 years old and sometimes I still wonder what happened to some of those kids. Maybe they made it out all right. But c’mon, if you’re from the hood, you’ve heard too many stories of the opposite — lives changed forever, relationships changed forever, black men who can’t get jobs because they’ve got a non-violent marijuana offense on their record. I moved from Orange to a nice neighborhood for high school. Then I went to the league right after that. For the first time in my life I was meeting people from all walks of life. Some guys from nice upbringings, some from places like Orange. Most of them had gone to college. Talking to them, I heard about another side to the War on Drugs. The way some dudes were describing it, marijuana was everywhere in the suburbs and at colleges. But police weren’t really caring too much about it. I was hearing about people selling weed like it was nothing — never getting caught. I was hearing how everyone casually smoked weed in college like it was just another class. Basically, I was hearing how police in some communities weren’t really policing marijuana the same way I was used to.

remember the first time my grandma tried cannabis. She was 80 years old. We were sitting in my garage in Denver back in 2011. I just about fell out of my chair when she said she’d try it. She was 100% serious.
The day after she had cannabis for the first time, she called my mom to tell her all about it. My mom actually recorded the conversation because she was so shocked. On the recording, you can hear my grandma saying how her the whole world felt “brighter.” She was calling it a miracle. “I can read my Bible again!” she was saying. Since then, my grandma has continued taking cannabis and she’s found the right dose for her symptoms. She’s in far less pain, and it’s pretty incredible to see.
us. We’d be chilling outside and the police would get out and make everyone empty their pockets. They’d search us, make us stand against the wall, the whole routine. “Who got drugs? Show me the drugs.” But me and my friends never had any. I never messed with marijuana when I was a kid. I knew my mom would kill me if that ever happened. But no lie, I never got used to those searches. I was like 12 years old, man — that shit was scary. Sirens are going off and you’re being searched by dudes with guns. It’s crazy — I always felt like I was doing something wrong even though I wasn’t.
Alright, now I’m gonna finally tell you that statistic. I came across it a couple years back: The rate of marijuana use is relatively similar across racial lines. But black people are almost four times as likely to be arrested for it. Think about that for a second. In other words, yo … everyone uses marijuana at the same rate but not everyone is punished the same. Read the rest on www.411sportsnews.com

Super Bowl 52… A Blast from the Past
S
uper Bowl XXXIX was a game played between the AFC champions New England Patriots and the NFC champions Philadelphia Eagles to decide the Super Bowl winner 13 years ago for the 2004 season. The game was played on February 6, 2005, at Alltel Stadium (now known as EverBank Field) in Jacksonville, Florida, the first time the Super Bowl was played in that city.
The Eagles earned a berth in the Super Bowl with a 38-7 win over Minnesota in the NFC Championship Game. Philadelphia, which scored the final 38 points in the win over the Vikings, became the third team to head to a Super Bowl on a scoring run of at least 38 points.
Cover Story
The Patriots, who entered the Super Bowl after compiling a 14–2 regular season record, became the first team since the 1997–1998 Denver Broncos to win consecutive Super Bowls. New England also became the second team after the Dallas Cowboys to win three Super Bowls in four years. The Eagles were making their second Super Bowl appearance after posting a 13–3 regular season record. The game was close throughout, with the teams battling to a 14–14 tie by the end of the third quarter. The Patriots then scored 10 points in the 4th quarter with Corey Dillon’s 2-yard touchdown run and Adam Vinatieri’s 22-yard field goal. The Eagles then cut their deficit to 24–21, with quarterback Donovan McNabb’s 30yard touchdown pass to receiver Greg Lewis, with 1:48 remaining in the game but could not sustain the comeback. Overall, New England forced four turnovers, while Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch was named Super Bowl MVP for recording 133 receiving yards and tied the Super Bowl record with 11 catches. Because he recorded 10 catches during the previous year’s Super Bowl, he also set the record for the most combined receptions in 2 consecutive Super Bowls (21). Branch was the third offensive player ever to win Super Bowl MVP honors without scoring a touchdown or throwing a touchdown pass. The other two players were Joe Namath in Super Bowl III and Fred Biletnikoff in Super Bowl XI.
Philadelphia advanced to the Super Bowl for the third time in franchise history (1980 and 2004) and the Eagles are looking for the team’s first Super Bowl title.
On Sunday, February 4, the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots will meet in Super Bowl LII (6:30 PM ET, NBC) at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota. Super Bowl LII will feature the No. 1 seed in each conference – the NFC champion Eagles against the AFC champion Patriots. It also marks a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX when New England defeated Philadelphia 24-21 on February 6, 2005 in Jacksonville. This is the third Super Bowl in which each team ranked in the top five in both points scored and fewest points allowed (Super Bowls IV and XIII). The Eagles were third in points scored (28.57 points per game) and fourth in points against (18.4) while the Patriots ranked second in points scored (28.63) and fifth in points against (18.5).
To avoid the possibility of an incident similar to the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show during the previous year, the league selected Paul McCartney as a “safe” choice to perform during Super Bowl XXXIX’s halftime. The broadcast of the game on Fox was watched by an estimated 86 million viewers.
“It’s a tremendous feeling to be going to the Super Bowl,” says Pederson. “I love coaching this football team. I love coaching these players. The thing about this team is that despite all the adversity that surrounds the team, these guys don’t listen to that. I don’t listen to that. They come to work and practice hard every day. They love being around each other. One of our goals was to be the NFC champions and represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. And now we’ve got our work cut out for us. We’re going to the Super Bowl and we still have some unfinished business ahead of us.” Philadelphia quarterback NICK FOLES completed 26 of 33 passes (78.8 percent) for 352 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 141.4 passer rating in the NFC Championship Game victory. Foles is the only quarterback in NFL history to record a 100+ passer rating in each of his first three career postseason starts (minimum 20 attempts per game). In this year’s postseason, he has completed 49 of 63 passes (77.8 percent) for 598 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 122.1 passer rating.
While nearly every player on each team is different, the Patriots and Eagles will face each other next week in Super Bowl LII. Now, here are the Matchups for the Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots: Two teams. One game. It all comes down to this.

The Eagles, led by second-year head coach DOUG PEDERSON, tied a franchise record with 13 regular-season wins (2004) and earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC for the fourth time since 2002. The Eagles, who completed a “worstto-first” turnaround, are the first team since the 2009 New Orleans Saints to win its division the season after finishing in or tied for last place and advance to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl 52… A Blast from the Past back CARSON WENTZ, is only the fourth quarterback in the Super Bowl era to win two postseason games after making three or fewer starts in the regular season. The other three quarterbacks to accomplish the feat are DOUG WILLIAMS (1987 Redskins), JEFF HOSTETLER (1990 Giants) and FRANK REICH (1992 Bills). Reich currently serves as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator.
“We have great players and coaches in this locker room and I knew we’d be able to compete for this,” says Long. “We’ve earned this opportunity but that’s all it is. We still have a lot of work to do.” Philadelphia had six players selected to the 2018 Pro Bowl: guard BRANDON BROOKS, defensive tackle FLETCHER COX, tight end Ertz, safety MALCOLM JENKINS, tackle LANE JOHNSON and quarterback Wentz. Introducing the sounds of Angela Blair-Jeffries
By Cedric E. Lyons courtecy www.angelablair.com
I
t was senior talent day and I had just got off the stage doing my routine of Noah talking to God about building the Ark. (I killed it) The next act up was Angela Blair singing “Tomorrow”, by the Winans, the song was so good that a couple of seniors went on stage and cried with Angela and the audience.
That is ABJ, she truly brings down the house everywhere she goes. Angela has always been a diva throughout her life. Angela has always followed God’s plan for life even in the hard times. Angela is a POWERFUL SINGER/ACTRESS & RARE Entertainer that can inspire ANYONE. She is known for bringing the house down! She keeps the audience engaged, often bringing them to tears and wanting more! She can sing any genre of music comfortably! A true and rare artist with a five-octave range, Angela’s performance is a definite must see! I remember seeing ABJ at different events and she loves the crowd and much as the crowd loves her. Her band gets equal billing as she invites the audience in her world of music. I’ve listened to Mrs. Jefferies take a sound and add so much more to the sound that you hear 5 different scales in one sound. She can break down on stage like it was rehearsed and not miss a beat. Ladies and Gentleman Introducing Angela Blair-Jefferies Where it all began An icon in the making, Angela Blair has been singing since the age of seven years old. Hailing from the great state of Texas, Blair is a multi-talented

entertainer with a heart of gold. No stranger to the struggle life, her story is one of determination, courage and faith, which will both encourage and inspire you. Entertaining is something that comes naturally to her, so it was no surprise when at the age of fifteen she was opening shows for the likes of the legendary Mighty Clouds of Joy and 11-time Grammy Award winning Shirley Caesar. In 2002, Blair-Jeffries was recognized by a Statewide New Artist Showcase in Austin as Texas’ Female Vocalist of the Year. Two years later, in 2004, she was labeled UK’s Greatest Voice You’ve Never Heard. Eventually, all roads would lead Blair to enter and ultimately win the 2005 Kraft Gospel Talent Search, which was held during the annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana and winning a cash prize of $25,000. Following her Kraft Gospel Talent Search win, Blair released her debut CD entitled, “It’s All About Love”. God has opened so many amazing doors for Blair, such as the opportunity to minister at the Essence Festival, Bobby Jones Gospel on BET, Super Bowl 46, 2009 Presidential Inauguration, and so much more! Blair has been featured in national publications such as Essence, Ebony, Jet, Today’s Black Woman, Readers Digest and more. She has shared the stage and worked with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bret Michaels, Blair Underwood, Jamie Foxx, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Magic Johnson, The Clark Sisters, Minister Louis Farrakhan and many, many more.
Armed with faith, newfound vigor, determination, a new team and a new outlook on her dedication to ministry, love, life and her career, this devoted mother and wife to Ret. USAF S.Sgt. Andre Jeffries, is ready to share her amazing gift with the world. There is no stopping this anointed & powerhouse vessel from reaching her goals. Angela’s new single entitled “It’s Going To Get Better”, is inspiring the masses with its powerful message in times like these. Her last single, “Nobody Like You Lord”, spent 10 weeks at #1 on CD Baby and is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on her junior CD, which is scheduled for release soon. This CD is sure to be an inspiration and has already been dubbed as one of the most anticipated CD releases by Examiner.com and Soultracks.com. Blair-Jeffries is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc, a passionate philanthropist and community advocate for Diabetes Awareness, Royal Patrons, Domestic Violence and more. Don’t leave this Earth without experiencing the soul inspiring sounds of Angela Blair Jeffries. I’m proud to know Angela as an entertainer but I’m also proud to know Angela as a childhood friend. And, stop scoring on me every time you see me!!!
Angela’s talent does not end with the ability to inspire crowds with her beautiful voice; she is also an aspiring actress. She was cast as an ‘Angel of Mercy’ singer in the motion picture film, Leap of Faith, starring Steve Martin, Debra Winger, and Liam Neeson. She also held the title of Associate Producer on the official documentary short film, “Barack Obama, the Man and His Journey” by Universal Pictures. Angela was named as one of the top ten independent artist of 2013 in the Examiner Magazine and to Hollywood director, David E Talbert’s Top performers list to watch.

HE SAID; SHE SAID
When a relationship ends, do you discard things associated with that relationship, if at all? What do you keep?
By: Winter Harris Andrea Carr: Nah, kept the coat (its a good coat!) and still have the pictures. It wasn’t a bad split, so they’re aren’t bad memories tied to any of the things. Charles M. Top 10+1 Denzel Washington Movies My husband has a running joke when people ask Him how he snagged me; he tells them he drugged me and told me he was Denzel Washington. Lol. I suppose he came up with this little diddy because he knows I’m a huge fan of Denzel Washington. As I began writing this article, I tried to remember what made me such a huge fan. I mean I have even argued with my mom that she has to choose another actor to like, maybe Sidney Poitier or James Earl Jones, because Denzel is all mine! But she’s not budging so I have to share. Born in Mount Vernon, NY, after graduating from high school, Denzel enrolled at Fordham University to study journalism. While there, he appeared in various student drama productions and got the acting bug. Subsequently, after graduating from college, he moved to San Francisco and enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater. He left there after only one year to seek work as an actor and the rest they say is history! Since 1975, among the many nominations and awards, he has received three Golden Globe awards, a Tony Award, and two Academy Awards.

At first I didn’t imagine Denzel as a tough guy or a bad guy but my top four favorite Movies of all time showed his great versatility and range as an actor in bad or tough guy roles.
1. Training Day (2001). This movie had to grow on me, because like I said, I never imagined Denzel as a bad guy but he played the mess out of this part, right up to the end! So, if you haven’t seen this movie, Denzel plays a corrupt cop taking a new rookie on the road for on the job training; only its not the type
of training he expected. He won an Oscar for his performance. I suspect because every one felt he was more of a heart throb, a romantic type actor, and he just blew us away by being crass and downright devious.
2. Man on Fire (2004). In this movie, Denzel plays John Creasy, a despondent, alcoholic former CIA operative/U.S. Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance officer-turned mercenary and bodyguard, who goes on a revenge rampage after his nineyear-old charge, Lupita “Pita” Ramos (played by Dakota Fanning), is abducted in Mexico City. From what I read, this movie was based on a true story. If my kid was ever abducted, I would want this guy on my side. 3. The Equalizer (2014). Oh, my goodness! Similar to Man on Fire,
www.411sportsnews.com
Denzel plays a retired CIA black ops operative working at a Home Mart hardware store in Boston, MA. He promised his deceased wife that he would leave his old life behind. However, he becomes a vigilante on behalf of a young girl he meets one night who happens to be a teen prostitute controlled by the Russian Mafia. He also looks out for his coworkers and looks for ways to get justice for anyone who’s not being “equalized”. There is a sequel in the works and I believe it’s set to come out this Fall!
4. American Gangster (2007). Denzel was so smooth in this movie where he plays Frank Lucas, a gangster/drug kingpin from La Grange, North Carolina who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the

Top 10+1 Denzel Washington Movies Vietnam War. Even though gangs and drugs are against the law, I’m somewhat fascinated in the inner workings of them. These guys are so very smart. I could only imagine what they could do in a legitimate business!
5. Malcolm X (1992). Denzel plays the main character in this biographical film produced by Spike Lee that shows some of the key events in Malcolm X’s life: from his criminal career to his assassination on February 21, 1965. I think it’s probably one of the best biographical films about Malcolm X to date. 6. John Q (2002). Denzel plays a father and husband whose son is diagnosed with an enlarged heart and finds out he is unable to receive a necessary transplant because his HMO insurance will not cover it. After exhausting all he has with the

support of his wife and friends, he makes the decision to hold up the hospital to force them to get his son on the transplant list and do the surgery. I love how he said his name when first asked. This movie touched my heart because it was so real. Not that what he did was right in the eyes of the law, but no one really knows how far they would go until they are placed in the situation, right?
7. Glory (1989). This was my first introduction to the excellence of Denzel Washington as an actor. This was a historical war drama in which he played a former slave, turned soldier during the civil war. Without giving away the movie, I just say, that one tear rolling down his face was epic! 8. The Hurricane (1999). In this film, Denzel plays a biographical role of
Rubin Carter, a wrongfully convicted boxer who fought his hardest fight, almost 20 years, for his release from prison.
11. Flight (2012). In this film, Denzel plays an airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after it suf-
9. Remember the Titans (2000). Love, love, love this sports drama in which Denzel plays another biographical role, this time, of Herman Boone, an American football coach who faced adversity in the era of integration of schools.
fers an in-flight mechanical failure, saving nearly everyone on board. Immediately following the crash, he is hailed a hero, but an investigation soon leads to questions that put him in a different light. I remember Denzel said in an interview that he would not do a nude scene for any roles he would play. Well, he wasn’t completely nude in this film, but there was a big, bad moon rising for this role! Shocked the mess out of me!
10. The Great Debaters (2007). Based on a true story, Denzel plays a debate coach, Melvin B. Tolson at Wiley College, a Historically Black College, who fights to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American South during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a fear for blacks. Not only a great biographical film, but historically sound.

Honorable mention for some of my other favorites: Antoine Fisher, Inside Man, Devil in a Blue Dress, Mo Betta Blues, Fences, Mississippi Masala, and He Got Game. So many great movies, so little time!!

health care providers to find and treat diabetes before complications occur and to find and treat prediabetes, which can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes from developing. What does the A1C test reveal? The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about a person’s average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past 3 months. The A1C test is sometimes called the hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, or glycohemoglobin test. In January, I interviewed on the Valder Beebe Show, Alexa von Tobel the Founder and CEO of LearnVest.com as well as the New York Times-Bestselling Author of Financially Fearless.
