Terdema Ussery, Former Mavs and the Mavericks President Under Fire

ou should’ve seen my grandma when I told her that I wasn’t going to play in the WNBA last year. It was like she’d just found out that her favorite television show had been canceled. Actually, no, it wasn’t like that — that’s what it was.

he bible teaches us that fornication is sin but the world will tell you everyone’s doing it! But God’s word says, 1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” He also teaches us to separate ourselves from the world in Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Ever since I started playing basketball, my grandma has been obsessed with watching me hoop. I’m talking obsessed, like you wouldn’t believe. Spittin’ at the water cooler From the Publisher This week’s blessing is “The Final Word”. By Max Lucado:

The Son of Man has Power on earth to forgive sins. Mark 2:10

BRAND

If you are in Christ, your sin is gone. It was last seen on the back of your Sin Bearer as he headed out to Death Valley. When Jesus cried on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt. 27-46), he entered the wilderness on your behalf. He carried your sin away. He has the final word on your life. And his word is grace. Jesus did His part. Now do yours.

Be abundant in your confession, and... Be concrete in your confession. Go into as much detail as you can. Healing happens when the wound is exposed to the atmosphere of grace. Exactly what is it that you need forgiveness for? For being a bad person? That is too general. For losing your patience and calling your coworker a creep? There you can confess that. Confession, you see, is not a punishment for sin; it is an isolation of sin so it can be exposed and extracted. Be firm in this prayer. Satan traffics in guilt. So tell his guilt where to get off. Speak to it in the name of Jesus. “I left you at the foot of the cross, you evil spirit. Stay there!” And, for heaven’s sake, stop tormenting yourself. Jesus is strong enough to carry your sin. Did he not say he would do so? Believe him! He has the final word. Now time to spit at the water cooler!!! There has been a lot of things going on in the sports world and outside of the sports world, that I am going to try to tackle some of those issues. 1. Ex-NFL player Rae Carruth apologizes for death of mother of his son and makes bid for custody So trunk boy wants custody of the son he didn’t want the mother to have and had her killed!! I know about forgiveness, I’m a huge supporter of forgiveness. The issue is I can forgive but that doesn’t mean I have to let you have custody once you get out of prison. I would like to do supervised visits and really watch you a while before I even

consider letting you have unsupervised visits, let alone custody. And if I’m not mistaken he still has to pay child support, because he is in the rears. If I’m the judge my answer is NO. 2. So the Mavericks are in the sexual misconduct conversation over former President of Basketball Operations Terdema Ussery. When does this end, and it is not good business for Cuban to come out and say that it is his fault that he left an employee on staff how had been convicted of domestic Violence. Mark told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon “I want to be clear, I’m not putting the blame on anybody else, It came down to my final decision that I made.” Now Terdema has denied acts of sexual misconduct involving coworkers that has been outlined in a Sports Illustrated expose. Ussery said in a statement - “During my nearly 20-year tenure with the Mavericks, I am not aware of any sexual harassment complaints about me or any findings by the organization that I engaged in inappropriate conduct.” My personal interaction with Terdeam has been very positive. He actually gave me the first oneon-one interview for the paper back in Aug of 2004. He was very nice and full of information. Over the years it was mostly a hi and by but we would sometime eat in the media dinning and we would just talk about random information. The facts of the case are very strong against the Mavericks and Cuban. This situation is going to get worse before it gets better. Mark will more that likely fill the wrath of the NBA. The worse part about this is the Maverick players, as bad as they are, and could possibly get a high lottery, could lose draft picks over something they didn’t do. Talk about snake bit.

Negro League History 101 As told by: negroleaguebaseball.com

Just where did that Robinson fellow come from?

M

ost everyone knows that Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play major league baseball during the modern era. Suprisingly, few people have given much thought to how Robinson came to the attention of major league scouts, where he played before signing with the Dodgers, or just what the nature of baseball in the black community might have been before professional baseball’s integration. In the following paragraphs we’ll take a quick trip through the years of baseball in black America that led up to Robinson’s 1947 debut in Brooklyn. Our tour is intended to introduce those who are just learning about the Negro Leagues to this fascinating era in the history of American sports and society. There won’t be much here to interest the baseball afficianado -- just a brief introduction for those newly discovering Negro League baseball. 1. Professional Black Baseball Comes To The Fore The early years of the 20th Century saw an emergence of several powerful black clubs in the Midwest. Teams like the Chicago Giants, Indianapolis ABCs, St. Louis Giants and Kansas City Monarchs rose to prominence and presented a legitimate challenge to the claim of diamond supremacy made by Eastern clubs like the Lincoln Giants in New York, Brooklyn Royal Giants, Cuban Stars and Homestead (Pa.) Grays. In the South, black baseball was flourishing in Birmingham’s industrial leagues, and teams like the Nashville Standard Giants and Birmingham Black Barons were establishing solid regional reputations. By the end of World War I black baseball had become, perhaps, the number one entertainment attraction for urban black populations throughout the country. It was at that time that Andrew “Rube” Foster, owner of the Chicago American Giants and black baseball’s most influential personality, determined that the time had arrived for a truly organized and stable Negro league. Under Foster’s leadership in 1920 the Negro National League was born in Kansas City, fielding eight teams: Chicago American Giants, Chicago Giants, Cuban Stars, Dayton Marcos, Detroit Stars, Indianapolis ABCs, Kansas City Monarchs and St. Louis Giants. In the same year Thomas T. Wilson, owner of the Nashville Elite Giants, organized the Negro Southern League with teams in Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Montgomery and New Orleans. Only three years later the Eastern Colored League was formed in1923 featuring the Hilldale Club, Cuban Stars (East), Brooklyn Royal Giants, Bacharach Giants, Lincoln Giants and Baltimore black Sox. The Negro National League continued on a sound footing for most of the 1920s, ultimately succumbing to the financial pressures of the Great Depression and dissolving after the 1931 season. The second Negro National League, organized by Pittsburgh bar owner Gus Greenlee, quickly took up where Foster’s league left off and became the dominant force in black baseball from 1933 through 1949. 2. The Golden Years Of Black Baseball

Feb 22-Feb 28, 2018

While the Crawfords were, undoubtedly, black baseball’s premier team during the mid-1930s, by the end of the decade Cumberland Posey’s Homestead Grays had wrested the title from the Crawfords, winning 9 consecutive Negro National League titles from the late 1930s through the mid-1940s. Featuring former Crawfords stars Gibson and Bell, the Grays augmented their lineup with Hall-Of-Fame talent such as that of power-hitting firstbaseman Buck Leonard. Contributing greatly to the ever-growing national popularity of Negro League baseball during the 1930s and 1940s was the East-West All-Star game played annually at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. Originally conceived as a promotional tool by Gus Greenlee in 1933, the game quickly became black baseball’s most popular attraction and biggest money maker. From the first game forward the East-West classic regularly packed Comiskey Park while showcasing the Negro League’s finest talent. 3. The Color Barrier Is Broken Baseball’s color barrier cracked on April 18, 1946 when Jackie Robinson, signed to the Dodgers organization by owner Branch Rickey, made his first appearance with the Montreal Royals in the International League. After a single season with Montreal, Robinson joined the parent club and helped propel the Dodgers to a National League pennant. Along the way he also earned National League Rookie Of The Year honors. Robinson’s success opened the floodgates for a steady stream of black players into organized baseball. Robinson was shortly joined in Brooklyn by Negro League stars Roy Campanella, Joe Black and Don Newcombe, and Larry Doby became the American League’s first black star with the Cleveland Indians. By 1952 there were 150 black players in organized baseball, and the “cream of the crop” had been lured from Negro League rosters to the integrated minors and majors. During the four years immediately following Robinson’s debut with the Dodgers virtually all of the Negro Leagues’ best talent had either left the league for opportunities with integrated teams or had grown too old to attract the attention of major league scouts. With this sudden and dramatic departure of talent black team owners witnessed a financially devastating decline in attendance at Negro League games. The attention of black fans had forever turned to the integrated major leagues, and the handwriting was on the wall for the Negro Leagues. The Negro National League disbanded after the 1949 season, never to return. After a long and successful run black baseball’s senior circuit was no longer a viable commercial enterprise. Though the Negro American League continued on throughout the 1950s, it had lost the bulk of its talent and virtually all of its fan appeal. After a decade of operating as a shadow of its former self, the league closed its doors for good in 1962. This is Only The Beginning Of The Story...This brief narrative only capsulizes the story of Negro League baseball. Delving further into this fascinating era in American sports will reveal a rich and colorful story which had profound impact not only on our national pastime, but upon America’s social and moral development. It is a story you won’t want to miss!

Terdema Ussery, Former Mavs and the Mavericks President Under Fire

O

n Tuesday night, Sports Illustrated published the findings of a months-long investigation into a pattern of misogyny and predatory sexual misconduct within the Dallas Mavericks organization. Included in the expose are multiple details about allegations aimed at Terdema Ussery, who was president of the Mavericks for 18 years. During his time with the Mavericks, Ussery allegedly told a woman that she would be “gang-banged,” put his hands on a woman’s thigh without her consent and suggestively said to a woman, “seriously...just one time.” One former Mavericks employee says that when she told her friends she’d taken a job with the team, she was told to watch out for the president. “Whatever you do, don’t get trapped in an elevator with him.” According to the story, Ussery was investigated by the organization in 1998 after multiple women complained of his conduct. He remained with the Mavericks and stayed on as president when Mark Cuban bought the team in 2000. Ussery denied the allegations made against him in a statement to Sports Illustrated, calling them “outright false and inflammatory.”

them, including unwelcome physical contact and requests for sex. The women spoke to SI and showed the magazine logs dating back years and detailing his behavior. Ussery denied these accusations. •U ssery left the Mavericks in 2015 for a job at Under Armour. He resigned after two months amid an investigation into inappropriate behavior toward a female coworker. A Mavs.com writer’s domestic violence incidents also were at the fore •E arl K. Sneed began as a freelancer for the team’s website, then was hired full-time as Mavs.com beat writer in 2010. •S need was arrested and charged with assault during the 2010-11 season, allegedly breaking his girlfriend’s wrist and leaving her with bruises. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor

Women complained to SI that Pittman was unhelpful about their reports of Ussery’s behavior. The SI story also says that some men and women in the organization were uncomfortable with Pittman’s openly conservative stances on matters such as gay marriage, abortion and immigration. Pittman was fired Tuesday amid the investigation. Mark Cuban says he didn’t know about these things Cuban was never accused of harassing any employees himself by anyone the SI reporters spoke with. Employees expressed to SI disbelief that Cuban -- known for how engaged he is in all aspects of the job -- did not know about the general hostile environment in the organization. When asked for a statement, Cuban said he was “embarrassed” and vowed to fix the problem in the organization. “It’s wrong. It’s abhorrent. It’s not a situation we condone,” Cuban told Sports Illustrated in a separate interview. Players Per the investigation, there were never any problems within the company involving players.

The disturbing allegations paint Ussery in a starkly different light than did the glowing piece Sports Illustrated published on him in 1993—”In a League of His Own”— when he was known as one of the sports industry’s brightest young talents. The investigation describes his reputation as a “marketing whiz who could sell with evangelical conviction.” Over a dozen former and current employees were interviewed as part of Sports Illustrated’s investigation, with one describing the organization as “a real-life Animal House.” There were reports of sexual harassment and domestic violence, and descriptions of an overall misogynistic and predatory workplace. Here is a look at the key information from the SI story, by Jon Wertheim and Jessica Luther, that shook up the NBA world the night after the All-Star Game: Accusations focus on former Mavericks CEO Terdema Ussery •U ssery became CEO of the Mavericks in 1997. One year later, in 1998, the organization conducted an investigation into reports of his inappropriate behavior. He kept his job, but a new human resources director was hired. •M ultiple women accused Ussery of harassing

In 2014 he allegedly assaulted the woman, who reported the incident to HR. The woman decided to quit. Sneed kept his job.

The statement said they learned of “behavior in our workplace that appears to have violated the organization’s standards of conduct.” They plan to hire outside council to conduct an independent investigation. NBA statement

•S need was fired Tuesday after the Mavs learned about Sports Illustrated’s investigation.

The league issued a statement shortly after Sports Illustrated’s report.

The 20-year HR director was fired for his role as an enabler

The statement said the behavior indicated in the report is “completely unacceptable.”

Buddy Pittman was brought in to head the Mavericks’ HR after the initial investigation of Ussery in 1998.

The NBA plans to closely monitor the Mavericks’ investigation.

10 Best Exercises For Weight Loss - By: Jillian Anderson

hen it comes to losing weight, we are often told that diet is the best way, that we eat matters more than what we do. Which is, in many ways, absolutely true! You can have fast weight loss without doing anything at all except cutting calories. But is it truly the best way? The only way? Of course not! The best weight loss is a combination of approaches, and if we only focus on one strategy for weight loss, we risk becoming unhealthy instead of healthy. Confused? I’ll do my best to explain. Why Weight Loss Is Unhealthy. Let me start out by saying: staying above a healthy weight and carrying excess fat are more unhealthy than weight loss! There has been a little research to suggest that having a slightly higher weight is the best protection against illness, but the problem with using this as a crutch is: BMI does not account for the fat versus the muscle we are carrying. The only way to actually make sense of the “slightly overweight paradox” is to be completely honest with ourselves. I was dishonest with myself for years before I plucked up the courage to say “I’m

not chubby, I’m not a healthy weight, I am overweight and unhealthy.” It changed my life. So unless you are literally carrying a spare 5lbs, the best thing is to be honest with yourself about whether you are actually healthy.

For starters, when we eat less food we are not just consuming fewer calories, sugars, and fats. We are also consuming fewer proteins, vitamins, and minerals. And although consuming less of the former is the best idea, consuming less of the latter can cause serious deficiencies. The less food we eat, the less likely we are to get all the nutrients we need, and this is even more accurate when we are looking at diets that restrict food types, or that are incredibly low in calories. This means you could end up feeling lethargic (B vitamin deficiencies), depressed (vitamin D deficiency), weak (protein deficiencies), low in motivation (magnesium deficiency), low in sex drive (zinc deficiency), etc. And if we aren’t eating much protein, then where do you think the protein for ketosis comes from? Next, we have the problem with stress. Stress is not just a mental state, it is very much physical. It

is our bodies’ response to danger. And not all dangers are big scary ones like bears. Some are little, persistent ones, like starvation. When we eat less than our body needs to survive, it doesn’t just start losing weight, it starts sending signals to our brain saying “There isn’t enough food here!” And the longer you ignore those signals, the stronger they get. Last, but by no means least, we have the psychological effects of dieting. The best explanation:It makes us miserable. We cannot go out for a meal with our friends. We cannot eat our favorite foods. We need to count calories all the time. We need to handle the physical stress. Once the weight is gone, your health will slowly become objectively better. But whilst the process is underway? You are less healthy. Objectively, the best option would be not to get above a healthy weight in the first place. But if you’re here, chances are that option is not available to you. So the only solution is to engage in weight loss as safely and healthily as possible. Which is where exercise comes in.For more on this article please go to www.sport-fitness-advisor.com

Louisville Must Vacate Its 2013 National Title After NCAA Upholds Ruling

T

he NCAA has confirmed the University of Louisville must give up its 2013 national championship in men’s basketball, denying the school’s appeal of a decision last year that penalized the Cardinals’ program for “arranging striptease dances and sex acts for prospects, student-athletes and others.”

through 2014-15 seasons (including 15 NCAA Tournament wins). That was the 2nd-most in D-I men’s basketball in that span. pic. twitter.com/OWzSJO0aWs

“The violations in the case resulted in some men’s basketball student-athletes competing while ineligible,” the NCAA explained in its announcement Tuesday, later adding: “The appeals committee stated when student-athletes participate while ineligible, these types of penalties are appropriate.”

“I cannot say this strongly enough: We believe the NCAA is simply wrong,” the university’s interim president, Greg Postel, said in a statement Tuesday.

The ruling last June specifically faulted Andre McGee, the school’s former director of basketball operations, for acting “unethically when he committed serious violations.” It also singled out former coach Rick Pitino, who was fired last fall after a federal fraud investigation implicated Louisville in still another massive scandal. For their rule violations, the NCAA ruled that the men’s basketball program must vacate its records from 2011 to 2015 — including the 2013 title and a Final Four appearance in 2012. In total, the program will lose 123 wins, which ESPN Stats & Info says was second-most in men’s Division I basketball over that span.

That 2013 title was Louisville’s only men’s national championship in the past three decades. As member station WFPL reports, “the university must also return money received through conference revenue sharing for its appearances” in the NCAA tournament each of those years. ESPN notes this will also give Louisville the unwelcome distinction of being the first NCAA DI men’s basketball team “to vacate a national title during the Final Four era.” Louisville will vacate 123 wins from the 2011-12

Postel asserted, as he said the school did in its appeal, that the program had apologized, cooperated and imposed penalties on itself — actions that “should have been a factor in the severity of the punishment,” he said. “Instead, it was ignored.” “This dark cloud has hung over our heads for more than two years, and it has had a negative impact on our athletics program, our fans and the entire university family,” he added. “While we disagree with the NCAA’s decision, it is time for the university to close this chapter and move forward with a stronger commitment to excellence on and off the court.”

Banister, Rangers embracing underdog role

R

Manager expects long-shot status to drive team; Odor looks to rebound; Beltre discusses milestone

angers manager Jeff Banister came up with a simple slogan to describe his first-day speech to his players. “Hungry dogs run faster,” Banister said.

“The skill set hasn’t gone away, it didn’t erode, he didn’t get injured,” Banister said. “He didn’t lose it. The desire, drive to work at it, to get better, what his work ethic will be … I am banking on all of these factors allowing him to be the player we know he can be.”

The Rangers may be hungry dogs after going 7884 last season and failing to win a division title for a third straight year. But they are also considerable underdogs going into 2018, based on what they did this offseason and being in the same division as the Astros.

Beltre not interested in milestone Adrian Beltre had to endure much attention and buildup as he approached 3,000 hits last year, and was visibly relieved when it was over.

“Outside expectations, there is nothing we can do about,” Banister said. “It’s what our internal expectations are. We play well in the underdog position, we have shown that.”

Guess what? He is now just 38 home runs away from 500 in his career. Only five players have 3,000 hits and 500 home runs for their careers: Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Alex Rodriguez, Eddie Murray and Rafael Palmeiro.

Banister said the message is to get back to the style of baseball the Rangers played when winning division titles in 2015-16. It was the style that helped the Rangers rebound from a 95-loss season in 2014 to win a division title. “A relentless style of baseball that puts pressure on the other team,” Banister said. “It’s not always pretty, but do whatever is necessary to win the baseball game. Don’t care who gets credit, it’s an all-in Texas mentality.” Banister said the Rangers were humbled last year. “The most important thing is how you respond af-

“Shut up!” he said, walking away.

Banister expects big year from Odor

Rangers beat:

Rougned Odor did not have a good year in 2017, despite hitting 30 home runs. His slugging percentage dropped from .502 in 2016 to .397, his .252 on-base percentage was the second lowest by a Major League qualifier since 1995 and his .204 batting average was the second lowest in club history.

COWBOYS WILL TAG DEMARCUS LAWRENCE; WHAT’S THE PLAN? February 20 is an important day for NFL clubs this year. Why? It’s the first day in which teams can franchise tag any player. Since 2015, when the Dallas Cowboys tagged Dez Bryant before they were able to work out a long-term deal, Jerry Jones & Co. haven’t used the franchise tag. In 2018, though, that will change.

done in July. The tag however, is not expected to be placed as soon as possible. What would franchise tagging DeMarcus Lawrence mean for this team? First of all, they’d make sure he doesn’t hit free agency in March. This gives the front office time to get to work and restructure players’ contracts if they have to in order to open up as much cap space as they can before giving him a deal.

DeMarcus Lawrence just played his best season yet in 2017, and he’s looking to get paid big time. Through three years, he had been able to rack up nine sacks, 52 tackles and three forced fumbles. In just 2017, he sacked opposing quarterbacks 14.5 times, had 35 tackles and managed to force four fumbles. Not only did Lawrence look like an elite pass rusher, but he also improved as a run defender a lot. The Cowboys have been looking for a “War Daddy” for a long, long time and Lawrence seems to be the answer for this football team. After such a big year, one would expect the Cowboys to sign him to a multi-year enormous contract. But there’s a catch. Lawrence failed to remain healthy early in his career and really didn’t

make as much of an impact until last season. There’s no question that D-Law will be wearing a star come the 2018 NFL season, but will he be doing it under a longterm deal or under a franchise tag? For now, according to David Moore from Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys will franchise tag Lawrence with the objective of getting a deal

www.411sportsnews.com

It’s worth mentioning as well, cap savings from players who are designated as post-June 1 cuts will already be available. If you want to be more familiarized with the Cowboys’ cap situation, I highly recommend you read John Williams’ deep dive on the matter. It’ll continue to be a very interesting story for this offseason, as handing a franchise tag to a player tends to become a non-friendly situation for both parties. Let’s hope that’s not the case for the Cowboys and Lawrence this year and that everything works out fine.

Feeling Good Again ANGEL MCCOUGHTRY FORWARD / ATLANTA DREAM

a EuroLeague championship trophy…. But now needed break.

I a

Y

ou should’ve seen my grandma when I told her that I wasn’t going to play in the WNBA last year.

It was like she’d just found out that her favorite television show had been canceled. Actually, no, it wasn’t like that — that’s what it was. Ever since I started playing basketball, my grandma has been obsessed with watching me hoop. I’m talking obsessed, like you wouldn’t believe. Like — even back when I was in high school, that woman would show up to my games hollering and screaming. And she kept on at it through college and into the pros — whether it was in person, or on TV, or even just catching highlights. For over 15 years, I’m telling you: If I was hooping, Grams was watching. So when it came time to confide in her that I was taking last season off … I was nervous. Nervous that I was about to let down my biggest fan. I braced for the disappointment in her voice. Instead, all I got was understanding. “Angel,” she said, “leaving … it’s going to be good for you.” And I think that was when I really knew for sure. Because like I said — through every twist and turn my career has taken, my grandma has been along for the ride. So if she was agreeing that it was time to take my foot off the gas pedal for a minute? Then I knew my instinct was right. I knew it was time. I’d played eight years of professional basketball, and lived the dream: All-Star games, Olympic gold medals, world championships,

Feb 22-Feb 28, 2018

The way that w o m e n ’ s professional basketball in America is set up … well, how else can I say it? It’s hell on your body. The average WNBA salary is about $75,000. Which sounds great — until you realize that you can earn up to 15 times more, hooping in Europe. When I learned that … it became hard for me to pass up the chance to play overseas. And so that’s how my year would go: I’d play for five months in the WNBA, and then fly over and play for seven months in Europe. The upside of this schedule was that I was able to earn a pretty good living and play ball in some pretty cool places. I mean — as a girl from the Baltimore suburbs, I’d never imagined that basketball would allow me to experience the castles and stone ruins of the Košice region. Are you kidding me? I’ve gotten to play in Slovakia, Hungary, Istanbul, Turkey, Lebanon … even now, I look at that list, and I’m in awe. Through my entire career, my grandma has been along for the ride. So if she was agreeing that it was time to take my foot off the gas pedal for a minute? Then I knew my instinct was right. But that life also had a downside, which was the wear and tear — both physically and mentally. Playing professional ball for 12 months straight, on repeat, without any time to recuperate? That starts to take its toll. Man … towards the end of the 2016 season, I remember waking up every day, just aching all over. I’d developed plantar fasciitis in both feet, and I’d feel this stabbing pain in my heel the moment I stepped out of bed. My knees creaked. My hips were tight. My quads were sore. And no amount of ice baths, or knee sleeves or fancy massages could make those aches and pains go away. After so many years of that life, I felt like a straight-up zombie. So when I say I needed a break, that’s what

www.411sportsnews.com

At first, everything was wonderful. Taking last year off opened up a whole new world for me. All of a sudden, I had all of this time. Time to travel and do other projects. Time to fly off to Africa with my fiancé. Time to open my own ice cream shop in Atlanta. Even time to take up boxing. But for the most part, honestly, I was content just resting up and enjoying life. Then, this past fall, I found myself thinking more and more about my future in basketball. I started to get that itch again, you know what I mean? I signed a contract with Dynamo, based in Kursk, Russia — and have been playing for them since October. And it’s been good. We’ve gone undefeated, which has been fun. The city is quiet, with all of these beautiful 18th-century cathedrals and old universities. Plus, after the rest I got, my body was feeling good. But I still hadn’t made the big decision. I still hadn’t decided if I was ready to be fully back. Back for that year-round grind, that seven-month/five-month loop. I still hadn’t decided if I was coming back to the WNBA. I remember waking up every day, just aching all over…. My knees creaked. My hips were tight. My quads were sore. And no amount of ice baths, or knee sleeves or fancy massages could make those aches and pains go away. I had offers from a lot of organizations, which was flattering. And it was cool to imagine playing for all those different teams, in all those different cities. I also began imagining myself going after that WNBA championship ring that I haven’t yet been able to grab — and of course that’s a goal that really drives me. But the thing that I found myself thinking about most? It was my grandma.

Player Profile

I want to take a second and give you some insight into why I needed a break in the first place.

I mean. I needed to bring myself — bring my body and mind — back to life.

I kept seeing this image of her, sitting in front of the TV … watching the games that were on … and just waiting patiently for the moment when she could see me in action again. No one wants to disappoint their grandma, right? So that’s my story of these last couple of years, you know? I’m finally feeling good again. See the rest of this story on 411sportsnews.com

Black History Moment: Notable African American Women in Entertainment By Shellye Lyons

A

frican American women are a powerful force to be reckoned with in any industry and it is for this reason I really enjoyed doing the research for this Black History Moment. With the help of the internet, this article pulls together information from several sources, including Bustle. com, Wikipedia, ThoughtCo.com, Buzzfeed, and Madame Noire, to recognize some of the most notable black women in the entertainment industry in no particular order.

kind heart guided everything she did. Born from humble beginnings in St. Louis, Baker started out as a member of the Jones Family Band and the Dixie Steppers, and eventually made her way to the stage as a chorus girl in Shuffle Along. Baker famously left the United States for Paris, where she found fame and fortune on the stage, and became a French citizen after claiming she couldn’t live in a country where she was “afraid to be black.” While in France, she helped with the war efforts during WWII, performing for troops, acting as a correspondent for the French Resistance, and serving as a sub-lieutenant in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. During this period, Baker started adopting what would eventually be 12 children, whom she referred to as her “Rainbow Tribe,” proving people of all different races, religions, and backgrounds could live together in harmony. Though hesitant, Baker did eventually perform in the U.S. again and found the racial climate so different and so much more inviting, it made her weep on stage.

1. H attie McDaniel. You probably know her as Mammy in Gone with the Wind, but Hattie McDaniel is more than her highly criticized role in the 1939 film. The first black woman to win an Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress, she was also the first African American woman on the radio. Though never wholly accepted or appreciated by the industry while she was alive, McDaniel was a pioneer for black women in entertainment who helped paved the way for all those who followed.

5. A retha Franklin. Everyone knows who is the Queen of Soul. She’s one of the most awarded female artists of all time and definitely one of the most respected — dominating soul music in the 60s and 70s with one of the greatest voices ever.

6. M arian Anderson. In 1955, she became the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera House. However, she also brought attention to discrimination when she performed at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939. Originally, she was meant to perform at Constitution Hall, but was denied by the Daughters of The Revolution and D.C.’s Board of Education. Watch her performance at the Lincoln Memorial here.

3. M aya Angelou. Author, poet, feminist, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou (1928-2014) is a personal hero of mine and likely many others. A powerful and moving writer, Angelou’s work changed the landscape for both female authors and authors of color, and has even influenced modern hip-hop. In addition to her writing career, Angelou worked alongside prominent leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X in their fight for black equality and civil rights. A globally celebrated literary and activist figure, Angelou’s legacy and writing will live on to inspire authors for generations to come.

2. J osephine Baker. Considered one of the first black female stars of the entertainment business, Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was an actress, singer, dancer, and humanitarian whose

notable guest appearances on Grey’s Anatomy to prove that once a starlet, always a starlet.

4. D iahann Carroll. Academy Award nominee Diahann Carroll dominated Hollywood, the Broadway stage and the silver screen in the 1960s. Her leading role in Julia made her the first Black woman to star in her own television series and scored her an Emmy and Golden Globe. Before becoming a household name, Diahann was also a singer and model. She has been nominated for an Emmy three times and married four times. In recent years she has made some

7. S ylvia Robinson. She is best remembered as the founder of the hip-hop label Sugar Hill Records and the force behind the pioneering rap songs “Rapper’s Delight” and “The Message”. However, she was also one of the few black females in early rock n’ roll. With guitarist Mickey Baker, she formed the duo Mickey and Sylvia in the 50’s and recorded the rock n’ roll hit “Love is Strange.” Listen to “Love is Strange” on YouTube here. 8. B lanche Calloway. She was the first woman to lead an all male orchestra as a bandleader. As the older sister of jazz band leader Cab Calloway, she taught Cab everything he knew about performing. Cab’s signature “Hi-De-Ho” phrase is said to have been inspired by Blanche’s song “Just A Crazy Song”. Listen to Blanche’s song “I’m Gettin Myself Ready For You” here. 9. S ister Rosetta Tharpe. Known as “The Godmother of Rock n’ Roll”, she would influence musicians such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash. Her earliest recordings had the spiritual lyrics of gospel mixed with a steel guitar. Her song “Strange Things Happening

Willow LaMunyon I can only speak for myself and my husband. Best friends with my husband had some deep meaning to why we completed our relationship. We enjoyed one another’s company we had great adventures and most of all we did the one thing that couples need most we talked to one another the way friends do Stephany DeBerry Not sure about the concept of spouse as a best friend. I don’t really believe it. I definitely think spouses can be friends though. I’m thrown off by “best”, cliche. HE SAID; SHE SAID of “best friend”. I have 2 best friends. He has 1 already. By default, as we went along in our marriage, we became best friends. Nothing like living with a person and them seeing you for who you really are.... inside and out, hair done, makeup done, sick days when you look like death, goofing around, attitude for no reason days, running to the bathroom cuz something didn’t sit right and warning them before they go in to use it Lmbo my husband became one of my best friends after marriage. It worked out just fine. Candice McKinney Yes, definitely, and without a doubt! My bad. You wanted a why. LOL I’ve experienced relationships with men who were my bff first (actually every guy I’ve ever dated) and though it ended for other reasons, the relationship for the most part was wonderful Bc we loved spending time with each other, talked to each other about everything, had fun together, and understood each other bc we got to know each other really well and on that friendship tip FIRST. The Best Way To Watch The Marvel Cinematic Universe

W

elcome to Fan Service, a guide to engaging with gargantuan, lore-heavy franchises. In each volume, we’ll recommend a watch/read order to approach the given series with and dissect our argument for it. Today: The Marvel Cinematic Universe in film and television. Less than a decade after Nick Fury popped up in Tony Stark’s living room uninvited, cinematic universes are now the blockbuster business model everyone wants to emulate. So far, no company has come within spitting distance of the hype the Marvel Cinematic Universe possesses. Tease us with King Kong versus Godzilla? Peanuts compared to Marvel. Give audiences a Mummy and promise them Dracula and Wolf Man in the future? Crickets. And what about the venerable superhero lineup of DC? There’s finally life in that effort thanks to “Wonder Woman,” but the rest of the “DCU” is still dead weight. Lesser superhero movies and cinematic universes might fade from view in the near future, but it looks like there’s no stopping Marvel’s momentum. By the end of 2017 there were 17 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with a half-dozen TV shows and a bunch of comic book spin-offs.1 Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says Marvel has film storylines drafted through 2028. It’d take some kind of cataclysmic event to knock the MCU off track. The benefit of Marvel’s centrally-planned canon is that, for the most part, it’s not too hard to follow the main storyline. All the movies so far have been building towards a future meeting between our Earth-bound heroes, the aliens and gods who chill in space and a big purple CG Josh Brolin in possession of the powerful Infinity Stones. Unfortunately, from hedged bets in earlier movies to recast roles to outright rebooting a con-

temporaneous Marvel series — here’s looking at you, Spidey — there are a couple things that might throw you off if you’re trying to watch all the Marvel movies without getting lost in a dark dimension of crossover confusion. Our recommendation privileges variety over strict chronology in some places and it doesn’t abide by Marvel’s awkward attempts to plug movies into the middle of television seasons. Also, we’ll do our best to clear up any confusion on what movies are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (a lot) and which movies aren’t (also a lot). Here we go. Inching Towards An Infinitely Hyped-Up Intersection Marvel’s first “Avengers” movie was in the works well before Robert Downey Jr.’s smarmy charisma brought Tony Stark to life in 2008’s “Iron Man,” but the studio was careful to not say anything definitive about a crossover flick until they knew they had an arc-powered hit on their hands. As such, the early Marvel movies are careful to only build up towards 2012’s “The Avengers” and little more. With Tony Stark’s warmly received debut and a lasting narrative hangover caused by him having the most screentime of any Avenger prior to their teamup, Iron Man’s narrative arc lays most of the groundwork for “The Avengers.” Even though Captain America’s debut takes place 50 years earlier, you’ve gotta start with Stark. With that in mind, here’s what order to watch everything in: Iron Man (2008) Iron Man 2 (2010) The Incredible Hulk (2008) Thor (2011) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) Iron Man 3 (2013) Thor: The Dark World (2013) Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 (2013) Daredevil Season 1 (2015) Avengers: Age of Ultron (2014) Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 (2014) Jessica Jones Season 1 (2015) Ant-Man (2015) Daredevil Season 2 (2016) Doctor Strange (2016) Luke Cage Season 1 (2016) Captain America: Civil War (2016) Black Panther (2018) Agent Carter Seasons 1 and 2 (2015-16) Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Seasons 3 and 4 (201516) Iron Fist Season 1 (2017) The Defenders Season 1 (2017) Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) If you’re just focusing on the films, this order guides you through the major arcs of the MCU thus far. First, you meet the individual heroes who come together and form the Avengers. Next, you see the sprawling aftermath of the Avengers’ first conflict followed by a detour in deep space (where we learn a lot more about the Infinity Stones). The introduction of Ultron leads to division amongst Earth’s heroes, putting them on icy terms with one another right as that big purple guy plots to assemble those dang Stones. The Future Now that “Black Panther” is finally out, all eyes are on “Avengers: Infinity War.” After six years of teasing that started with the first “Avengers” film, most of the heroes introduced in the films (plus, if hints from the directors pan out, heroes who haven’t gotten their films yet) will team up to punch Purple Brolin in the face — or at least get very close to doing so. “Infinity War” was originally pitched as a two-part film, not unlike how “The Hunger Games” split the last installment into two films released a year apart. Now that the films are in production the plan has changed slightly, with the fourth Avengers installment receiving a different, as-yet-unannounced title. While it’s unlikely that we’ll see the end of the Infinity Stone storyline in 2018, hopefully Marvel won’t stick audiences with a dud of a cliffhanger either. And, for the sake of keeping the story straight, hopefully they won’t stick too many shows and films into that gap in the timeline. Okay, who are we kidding? By next year you’ll probably need to get a corkboard and some red yarn to start tying together all the different plotlines. Excelsior?

imparted on the viewers of all colors? During my pre-review of the film, the theater filled with professional screeners from various publications, print, on-line, radio, and television. The audience was quite except during high action scenes when they rooted for their main character Black Panther or when impressed with a character on screen. Long after the luster of the action packed performances and I believe future award-winning movie is over, will the movie goers see the world different? Will we have life imitate art? Or will we just wait for the next super hero movie. Watch for our next Beebe’s Smart Living review.

Representing The Valder Beebe Show, James and I viewed the film Black Panther long before the public had access. As you are reading this article many have now had the opportunity to view the film, Black Panther, a 2018 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The stars are primarily today’s millennium rising stars beginning with Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther, alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke. Veteran actors Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. The films theme: Black Panther, T’Challa returns home as king of Wakanda but finds his sovereignty challenged by a long-time adversary in a conflict that has global consequences. As you are reading this article Marvel Comics Black Panther film has surpassed records, shattered perceptions and enthralled millions on the planet. Why? The film originally was thought of in 1992 by Wesley Snipes but never came to fruition. Black Panther premiered in Los Angeles on January 29, 2018, and released in the United States on February 16, 2018, in IMAX and 3D. The film is receiving critical acclaim, with praise for the cast, the director, action, costume design and the soundtrack mainly featuring Kendrick Lamar (a millennial). Many reviews have talked

From Death to Life

T

he bible teaches us that fornication is sin but the world will tell you everyone’s doing it! But God’s word says, 1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” He also teaches us to separate ourselves from the world in Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” However, I thank God for grace and mercy. I was living the fast life. Trying to grow up too fast, trying to settle down with anybody who was willing to put up with me, I was promiscuous, I had been molested as a child and raped in my college years. I was broken, I had fear, I was ashamed, I burdened guilt, I harboured unforgiveness, I experienced jealousy, I had anger and malice, I was impatient, I had low self-esteem, I was rebellious, and depressed. Everything you could think of I dealt with it personally. Nothing would ever go my way so I remained in a dark place even though I got baptised as a child, filled with the Holy Spirit, the gift of speaking in tongues, the gift of prophecy and just recently 2015 rededicated my life back to Christ. Since my rededication things have not been the same however I did backside and had to repent for my behavior. Meanwhile, things were okay for me as a child and I learned bits and pieces about God because we did not go to church regularly unless I was with Grandma, God rest her soul. My mother taught me about God, the bible, and baptism, and the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. I thank God for her and my grandmother for praying for me. So I got baptised and according to, the scripture Jesus says,”Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” Afterwards, I was then filled with God’s Holy Spirit and after the baptism I felt God’s power but once the Holy Spirit filled me all I can say is to God be the glory! It’s nothing like what you see and feel from earth. It’s definitely devine and like no other experience when He chooses to bless you with His

spirit. All I remember was years were constantly strolling down my face and I began to utter a different language which is the evidence of the filling of His spirit. Also found in Acts 2:4, and it reads “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Later I received the gift of speaking in tongues after making my request known to God and it reads, Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: or every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Shortly after that I learned I’ve had the gift of prophecy for a while even as a child growing up and the scripture also reads, Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” The Lord would always revealed revelations and confirmed to me in my thoughts, my dreams, and my visions they would come to past and I’ve even spoken things to people that have come true. Lastly, I decided to choose life and decided I no longer that I wanted to remain in sin which God shows us in His word, Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Instead of death I rededicated my life to Christ so April of 2015 I was re-baptised in Jesus name which declares there is more power behind the name of Jesus. I felt renewed and blessed because in Him we become a new creation! However, this was not the end for me I still struggled and suffered temptation so after meeting my fiance and getting engaged we chose the path of celibacy and practiced it until marriage and while we went through a rough patch and separation I fell into temptation and I felt my old life try to haunt me almost like a drug addict relapsing, I quickly fell into the trap and started doing some of the things of my former lifestyle and the bible teaches us we must die to sin daily. So I ended up with a guy I had no business with

www.411sportsnews.com

and he lusted after me and wanted to be with me but I knew that was not God’s plan for me. After falling into temptation it hurt, I cried, I felt lonely, betrayed, ashamed, guilty, all because the tempter Satan himself came to tempt me, I was vulnerable and I knew I had a goal to reach and it was not the former lifestyle that I wanted but I chose life! No more lies no more sinfulness, I had to leave the past in the past which leads to death but I chose abundant life. The bible says when we backslide, Matthew 12:45 “Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. I tell you it’s true, Ephesians 6:12, that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, and against the rulers of world, against spiritual wickedness of this age.” The Holy Spirit confirmed I needed deliverance from the sin I committed so this is where I also met my spiritual mother (God will send you people) at a Healing and Deliverance service and I tell you they prayed until something happened, those evil spirits had to be released! I felt free and felt no longer in bondage (a slave to sin). In the end I prayed that God would work it out for my fiance’ and I who also had a daughter together, we also forgave one another and took pre-marital counseling which is a testimony within itself! As for family goals I prayed I would break the generational curse of being a mother with a child out of wedlock and her being fatherless. I believed my daughter deserved for her father to be in her life as well as my now husband deserves the best relationship between the two of us. In short, I encourage you today to not give up on God regardless of your past mistakes. God ready for you to repent and come to Him with open arms. May you seek him and find Him and live for Him til the end of time witnessing and leading others to Christ. We all have a purpose here on earth and our end goal is to witness and make it into Heaven to be with our Heavenly Father.
