n a matter of days, hundreds of thousands of people will participate in another March on Washington. I recall the first one when Dr. King gave his world changing “I a dream speech.” The world listened as people; Black and white came to Washington to protest for equal rights for all Americans. Now, people have been forced to March again. The Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Acts which was passed in 1965. Voting ID laws, designed to discouraged minorities from participating in the electoral process are being passed by legislatures throughout the country. The Republicans seem to believe that the Civil War is not over and they are determined to chase people of color out of the country. Look at their opposition to immigration laws. Don’t they realize that America is a country of immigrants and that the only real Americans are the Native Americans who were here with the first boat loads arrived? Hopefully the new generation that is growing up now will continue to see beyond differences and will judge people by what is in their hearts and not the color of their skin. That was Dr. King’s dream. Perhaps many people simply need to pass away before American becomes the country that it should be. Let them take their prejudices to the earth with them. I will be watching the March on Washington and will be praying that it will change things. I certainly hope that we will need another march fifty years from now.

n a matter of days our children will be returning to school. And I want to let them know that we at the Elite News wish them tremendous success during the school years. We want our children to know that they are the future. They are the presidents of the future, the scientists, engineers, doctors, newspaper publishers and lawyers. We are depending on them to run this country and this world and in order to do that they must be prepared. If you are a student and you have dreams, hold on to those dreams. You can become anything that you set your mind to me. Don’t let anyone turn your around. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot accomplish your goals and objectives. There will be plenty of negative people round you but get away from them quickly because they cannot do anything for you. They can only harm you. Pay attention to the lessons that your teachers are giving you in school because they are the ones that are preparing you for the future. They are dedicated to your success and want you to be successful. Give them your full attention while you are in school And for those of you who are playing sports, remember that you have to have something to fall back on because everyone cannot be a member of the National Football League. Learn to love books, begin to write. Who know, one day you might start a news paper like my dad did many years ago and give people information. I want o thank the parents who support their children in school. Without it would not be possible for them to succeed. We are praying for the success of you and your children.

By: geraldine hooker | ust when you think things could not get worse, they get worse. Or just when you’re about to pull ahead, something comes along and pushes you back. Is there any point in going on? Is it time to simply give up, to give in, to abandon your dreams, to turn your back on your most deeply held desires? Absolutely not! No matter what has happened, no matter how difficult the conditions, no matter how much challenge is piled on top of challenge, there is always hope. In fact, the more difficult the situation, the more reason you have to move beyond it. The more you’ve lost, the less you have to lose and the more reason you have to stride confidently forward. Even if you have nothing else, you have something more precious than the purest gold, more rare and desirable than the brightest diamond. You have life. You can sense. You can think. You can reason. You can make decisions. You can take action. Though you may lose all else, still you retain the ability to move yourself forward, to become the person you decide to become, to live in the way you have determined to live. At times it may seem that the whole world is against you. But that assessment is based on past history. And the past does not equal the future. The past does not equal the future because you stand solidly in the present, able to break away from whatever has happened in the past and to create your future in the way you desire. This moment is overflowing with opportunity. If the past has been full of disappointment, now is the time to change that pattern. Now is the moment in which you can make a positive difference. Now is the time to take action. Now is the time to fulfill your incredible possibilities. You’ve glimpsed those possibilities before, and you know deep within your heart how positive and wonderful they can be. Now is your opportunity to grasp them. Now is your opportunity to turn them into reality. Your future is a blank canvas, waiting for you to apply color, shape and motion, meaning and fulfillment. You can make of it whatever you wish, whatever you dream, whatever you desire. Start by knowing you can do it. Though you’ve known your share of difficulty, you’ve succeeded in making it this far through life. The challenges of your past stand now as shining examples of your ability to persevere. You have successfully lived through each one of those challenges, each one of those disappointments. Consider for a moment how strong all that has made you. Consider all the valuable things you’ve learned. Just think of what you can do with that strength and that knowledge, applied in a positive direction. Ask yourself an important, life-changing question.

EXERCISE TIPS FROM A FEMALE BODYBUILDER

reetings: Last week, I shared an eating plan outlined for me by Linda Maribito, a female PRO Bodybuilder from Boston, Massachusetts. Linda was in Dallas to compete in the annual Dallas International Natural Bodybuilding Association’s PRO/AM National Championship that I promoted on August 10. The Presenting Sponsor was Parrish McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd. During breakfast, the day after the competition, Linda and I discussed a 16-week realistic eating plan for me, a non-bodybuilder. The goal of my 16-week eating and workout plan is for me to lose body fat and weight by the time I see Linda on September 26 in Las Vegas, NV. Linda reminded me that setting short term goals is a great way to kick-start and continue to lose weight until I’ve reached my ideal weight. By setting my short term goal, I will stay motivated to make healthy eating choices and to do my workout routine six days a week. Because this is a short term goal, I’m able to gauge and measure whether or not I’m on track to achieve my goals by

G

Tip #15: If you keep calories the same, the body gets used to it. Eat the same amount of calories for two weeks and then eat 200 to 400 calories less for two weeks. Wait it out! You will lose weight! Tip #16: Sugar must be used through exercise or stored!

Bodybuilder: 1) Work Legs – walk with extra weights. 2) Row – great for the back and chest and involves all the major muscle groups. It shapes and tones at the same time. It also builds full body strength and lean muscle mass while burning calories. 3) Arms – for small muscles like the triceps and big muscles like the biceps. Use hand-held weights, dumbbells or kettle bells. Use your body more; don’t rely on machines. Use 3 sets of weights each time: Sizes – 3, 5, and 10. 4) Push and Pull – always bend and lift from the waist.

Now, we focus on exercising. “Whether I want to or not, I work out 6 days a week for one hour and a half. I do five sets of each exercise,” said Linda about her exercise routine. Linda is in excellent shape. She has lean muscle mass with hardly any body fat. While I’m strong, have no health issues, and take no medications, I’m just the opposite! Therefore, my exercise routine is 6 days a week for one hour. I do three sets of each exercise, with 10 repetitions each. “I want you to wear out the legs,” said Linda. “The large muscle group burns more calories.” My Workout Routine From Linda, the PRO

I’m sticking with this. Plus, I’m swimming and doing water aerobics 60 minutes a day. I challenge you to join me in this 16-week endeavor. If you decide to do so, we can talk via telephone to keep each other encouraged and once a month meet for lunch for a motivational hug and health chat. Another Nutrition Tip: Eat Peaches, plums, and nectarines to reduce belly fat. “The phenolic compounds in the fruits have anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties and may also reduce the oxidation of the bad cholesterol, or LDL, which is associated with cardiovascular disease,” said Food Scientist Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, PhD.

weighing twice a week. This step will allow me to see my progress clearly. To celebrate, I will buy a new dress to wear to at the awards ceremony in Las Vegas. I can’t wait to show off my new body to Linda! Two nutrition tips from Linda that I didn’t give you last week that I’m using are:

No matter where your praying ground is, it should always be your mountain of expectation. I discovered that my mountain of expectation becomes a breeding ground for my miracle. Perhaps you have a condition in your body that concerns you. Well, we all should have a heart to see the sick and the afflicted made whole. It is, after all, God's will to heal and that was accomplished by the stripes that God bore for each of us. "He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by His Stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

ChieF BroWn dismisses PoliCe oFFiCers By: James BrentWood | allas Police chief David Brown dismissed five police officers earlier this week. Two of the officers released were former family v i o l e n c e detectives who were accused of neglecting their work. One of them, Brian Burgess, was charged with negligent homicide after his squad car collided with a bicycle rider. Police officials say that they are investigating whether or not Burgess tampered with evidence in the accident. The Chief dismissed Burgess and his partner, Officer Michael Puckett, after investigators found that their actions endangered the life of the man who was killed. Both Burgess and Puckett were four year veterans of the Dallas Police force. “It is not a great day for the police

department,” said Chief Brown. “This action will now make fifty-two officers I have had to dismiss as Chief. We have to maintian credibility in our department.” Brown said that officers in the family violence unit were doing sloppy work. He said that records of many cases were found in the garage of another police officer. Calling the situation unacceptable, Brown pledged that his department would work to turn the situation around. Detectives Shawn Wash and Durman Johnson were accused of mishandling family domestic violence records. An internal police audit revealed that Wash did not properly handle 646 cases and Johnson mishandled nearly one hundred cases.

marCh on Washington marks 50th year anniversary By: BarBara mallory CaraWay | ugust 28th will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the historic “March On Washington”. What started as the “March for Jobs and Freedom”, for African Americans, ended up being the biggest demonstration for equal rights in United States history. For years African Americans fought in the streets and courts for equal rights in American. The March on Washington was the biggest display of dissatisfaction with Washington, D.C. and congress failure to act on the issues of racial discrimination and voting rights including; elimination of school segregation, programs of public works, including job training for the unemployed and a $2 minimum wage, just to name a few. On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people of all races traveled by bus, car and plane to participated in the “March”. Some highlights included the presence of Hollywood stars Charlton Heston, Burt Lancaster and Marlon Brando. Singer Mahalia Jackson and Entertainer Bob Dylan performed. Most significantly, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his iconic “I Have A Dream” Speech” at the March. The 2013 recognition of the “March on Washington” starts on Saturday, August 24th with marches and other scheduled events in Washington and across the country. President Obama will speak at 3:00pm from the Lincoln Memorial where Dr. King delivered his “I Have A Dream Speech”. Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter will join him. A smaller march is planned on Wednesday, August 28th, the actual day of the 1963 March. The “March” culminated with several key legislation being passed by congress and signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. First the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed racial discrimination related to ethnic national and religious minorities. That law also, in theory, ended racial segregation in schools and in facilities served by the general public. Secondly, the Voters Right Act of 1965 became law that prevented the imposition of “any standard, practice or procedure to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color”. It also required federal oversight over elections administration, including requiring states, jurisdictions and sub-divisions, mostly in

A

Page 8

the South with a history of r a c i a l discrimination to get “preclearance” before changing voting laws and practices. The law has been amended several times since its enactment. President W. George Bush signed a 25-year extension in 2006. The irony of this law is that on June 25th of this year, nearly 50 years after the 1963 “March On Washington for Jobs and Freedom the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that portions of the Voting Rights Act were unconstitutional. In September 2011, Shelby County v.Holder, Shelby County Alabama sued in federal court challenging section 4(b) and 5, the portion addressing “preclearance” of the law of saying that the law was unconstitutional and therefore unenforceable. The case ended up in the Supreme Court. The Court in a 5-4 decision ruled that the law was indeed unconstitutional based on the fact that the 40-year-oldformula congress used to reauthorize the law is no longer applicable in today’s conditions. The majority went on to say the racial discrimination that existed at the time the law was passed does not exist today. It also said that congress needed to fix the formula. Section 4(b), the formula used for “preclearance” was outlawed but Section 5 that kept the requirement in tact has no significance without Section 4(b), the actual requirement used for formula adjustment. The nation’s highest court’s ruling will have widespread implications on elections across the country. Minority groups have once again sued in federal court to challenge the current ruling requesting that the Justice Department intervene against maps that states used to draw re-apportion, or redistricting lines. The Justice Department has indicated that it will seek equal voting rights under different sections of the Voting Rights Act. I will update you on the status of this lawsuit as it progresses.

{ NATIONAL REVIEW } We shall marCh onCe again By: CongressWoman eddie BerniCe Johnson | ifty years have passed since the world witnessed 300,000 citizens assemble in Washington, D.C. on August 28th, 1963 to demand “jobs and freedom” for people who lived on the margins of American life. During the march, the leadership of the nation was challenged to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Some changes were made and both pieces of legislation were passed with the assistance of President Lyndon B. Johnson and U.S. Senator Ralph Yarborough, two elected officials from Texas who empathized with those who gathered on a hot and humid August day. On August 24th, there will be another March on Washington. It will take place because the struggle for racial equality is not yet complete. There are forces in this country that are forcefully pushing back the advances that have been made and they must be confronted. One has only to witness the recent decision by the conservative U.S. Supreme Court that removed the teeth from the Voting Rights Act to realize that not everyone in this country believes in inclusiveness. The fact is that minorities are under attack in America. There are powerful interests who want the nation to return to the post Civil War period known as Reconstruction. They have enacted laws designed to prevent people from voting,

F

they oppose Obama care and they support so-called “stand your ground laws” which have resulted in the killing of innocent people. Even our president in the White House is not immune from the rancid abuse. I was present in the House Chamber while President Obama delivered a State of the Union address and a House Member disrupted the proceeding, calling the nation’s chief executive a “liar. It was shocking, it was disrespectful and it stemmed from prejudice. It is easy for superficial observers to suggest that the struggle for racial equality is no longer necessary. While lawfully sanctioned segregation is over and “separate but equal” is invalid, discrimination and inequality persist in our work places, our corporate boardrooms, our schools, and our governments. There is an inscription of Dr. King’s remarks made during the 1963 march at the Rosa Parks Plaza in the West End of Dallas that says we will not be satisfied “until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” We should not be satisfied! That is why I will be in Washington on August 24th with hundreds of thousands of people who realize that America is still not the country that the framers of its Constitution promised. Together we can make America live up to its promises that all people are created equal. That is why we shall march again.

Barbara Mallory served 6 years in the Texas House of Representative and 8 years as a member of the Dallas City Council.

WHY PLAY POLITICS WITH PUBLIC SAFETY? n March 7 in an unprecedented move State District Judge Lena Levario held Dallas District Attorney in contempt of court for refusing to answer questions on how his office made their decisions surrounding the management of a mortgage fraud investigation. Watkins has upheld that the decisions made by the prosecuting office should not be questioned in court. State District Judge Bob Brotherton from Wichitia Falls is hearing the case and to decide if the contempt charge with a $500 fine should be upheld or dismissed. The case against oil heir, Al Hill III, accused Watkins of engaging in prosecutorial misconduct that would aid his benefactor Lisa Blue. Now the case against Blue that was before Levario has been dropped. So if there is no case against Blue how is there still a case against Watkins? Additionally, if a judge hearing a case gets to question how the prosecuting office investigates a case is the judge now acting as the prosecutor and diminishing the charge for the prosecutor’s office to uphold Public Safety if they are required to tell how each case is determined?

{ TOLIVER’S TALENTS } By: mark a. toliver ii | ello Dallas-Fort Worth high school football fans. Its football time in the metroplex, and there are some good teams to watch this season. I am going to give a brief breakdown of some of the teams that we watch each year in the metroplex. Of course I can't write about all of the teams, but as the season goes on you can expect to see me on the sidelines watching your favorite team do their thing. Let's start with 5A: Cedar Hill - Cedar Hill proved everybody wrong when last years team won five playoff game last season before losing to Katy in the State Championship. But this year’s team features one of the toughest defenses in the area. Leading the way is DE Washington (81 tackles, 32 TFL, 15 sacks), LB Dillard (143 tackles, 15 TFL), RB Hill (1,060 yards, 10 TDs). Desoto - Desoto had one of the best seasons in school history last season. But this year the Eagles had a new set of skill people and a Defense that will win a lot of game for them. Leading the way on offense is QB White (3,524, 34 TDs passing, 1,413 yards rushing 12 TDs rushing) On Defense Orr is a 4 year starter and one of the best D-Back in the state. DL English (20 TFL) he could best the best D Lineman to play for Desoto. Mesquite - Mesquite was a powerhouse last year with some great player, and this season will not be any different. Rebuilding is a big part and it starts with 3 year starter DB Grant (81 tackles) he will be help out greatly by LB Montgomery also a 3 year starter. On offense you

{ SAFER FOOTBALL } By: leon simon | hen the late great Dale Earnhart was killed, NASCAR started a campaign to make racing safer. They tried to figure out how to make a driver safer. My thoughts were if you can figure out how to hit a wall at 200 miles an hour and be safe, your next job will be to make a plane crash injury free. The NFL is attempting a like task. They’re targeting the helmet to helmet hits; don’t lead with crown of the helmet. Drop your target line, now in a game this weekend; Tight end Dustin Keller took a hit from rookie safety DJ Swearinger. Swearinger went low around the

{ SPORTS WITH BILL } have RB Reed (598 yards 8 TDs). Bowie - Bowie will be something to watch. Dualthreat QB Eschenburgh (1,400 passing 12 TDs) RB Johnson (752 rushing, 7 TDs). On defense DB's Walker and Oliver make the secondary something that will give people a lot of trouble. Skyline - Last year's team was great to watch and this year will not be any different. There is a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball for the Raiders this season. The Defense will be led by SS Dixon (87 Tackles, 4 INT’s and 1 TD) CB Collins and DT Thomas are true run stoppers. 4A: Carter-This year Cowboys will feature one of the physical teams in the city. On offense QB Henry (1,229 passing 12 TDs) WR Ingram (746 yards 9 TDs) RB Avery (839 yards 13 TDs). On Defense LB Hampton (154 Tackles) the defense is ready for a great season. Kimball -The Knights lost a lot of talent last year, but this year’s team is loaded with a lot of talent also. RB/LB Hancock (191 yards 3 TDs rushing and 40 tackles) QB knees, and tore every ligament in Keller’s knee. The targeted hit area is almost like the old strike zone in baseball, the chest to knee. If you go low you tear up knees, go high concussions and fine. Since you’re not going to go to flag or touch football what’s the solution. I think football like NASCAR is trying to figure out how to have the injury free plane crash. They’ve made legislation to stop the helmet to helmet, and the knee shots. To a certain extent they’ve cut or tried to cut the excessive celebrations, as to not antagonize the defenders. I always thought that shouldn’t have to be taught. Why would I antagonize a guy whose job is to hit and hurt me and I never ever have a chance to hit or hurt him. If you don’t want the offensive guys to draw attention to themselves, why do you still allow the most degrading thing of all, the Lambeau leap. I think that looks like an animal trainer every time his animal does a trick come here baby and get a reward for doing your job, come let me rub your head. If they don’t think that’s drawing attention to you.

LaDarryl Blair will take over the play calling duties after playing safety last season (48 Tackles, 4 INT’s) he could go both ways before the season is over. WR Rowe is going to make a strong combination with Blair and will give defenses a fit. South Oak Cliff -The Golden Bears had a good see

toliver Continued on Page 15

I think the problem is incurable, you have a combine and the object is to get the most athletic guys you can find, Defensive backs that runs in the neighborhood of 4:5 in the 40yd dash, some even faster. Wide receivers run in the same neighborhood, and all of these guys are perfect physical specimen, solidly built and extremely strong for their size. If these two types of people collide if they’re headed to the bus stop or to catch a pass, someone is going to get hurt. The human body is not design, to make those type collisions, head first, feet first or shoulder first, continuously doing that will result in injury. First of all you’re playing on concrete, now you throw in a few 250lb linebackers and a few 300 plus linemen, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing on snow, somebody’s going to get hurt. These guys are very skillful at hitting. If you take a sniper hunting with a high power rifle in a wooded area where there’s plenty wildlife there is an excellent chance something’s going to die. Put all these human missiles out and someone gets HURT.

{ AT NYLO DALLAS SOUTH SIDE } his week a few of my friends took me out to a uniquely different location for appetizers and to watch the sun set over the Dallas downtown skyline. We arrived early only to find that they were offering a half price happy hour so we went up to the 6th floor and settled in to enjoy each other, the Dallas skyline with a setting sun and some appetizers. To our surprise the front desk informed us that we had come on the right day and all appetizers were half price. Yes!! We ordered their fried Sweet Potatoes, Popcorn Shrimp and Stuff Mushrooms. Let’s start with the Fried Sweet Potatoes. They were waffle cut and really good. I know many of you either like regular fries and many do not like Fried Sweet Potatoes. Well step out of the box and try these. Lightly salted and semisweet they are good with and without any sauce. The Popcorn Shrimp were wonderfully seasoned and lightly fried. The sauce wasn’t as flavorful as it looked to be so if you need a sauce just ask for some cocktail sauce or eat them without anything. It will work and go down nicely. Now the Stuff Mushrooms were to be stuff with crab. Well, the mushrooms were wet and the stuffing was fishy. Not a good

combination. Now after watching the sun set and enjoying the company of my friends we needed to move on. I asked for the check and we waited and waited and waited. Geez…. I was told that if I wanted it separated I had to wait for our waitress. Once she returned she was anything but professional or service oriented. In fact, she was rude and insolent. I requested a manager from both young ladies serving the room only to be told that NO manager was in the building and if I wanted to talk to someone “ you will just have to wait.” Heck we had already waited almost an hour just to get a check so outdone and in total dismay I marched me and our check down to the front desk to find me somebody. Oh, by the way, the all items were full price and not the half price we were told they were to

U.S., and i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y. Through research, education, and dialogue, we try to generate action in the great tradition of nonviolence – the vision and the power that ended British colonialism in India, dismantled apartheid in South Africa and overcame Jim Crow in America. This same force can be brought to bear on today's crucial issues. We don’t have to settle for war in Afghanistan and inequality in Texas. We don’t have to settle for sweatshop labor in Bangladesh and police brutality in South Dallas. We don’t have to settle for an over-funded nuclear arsenal and underfunded public schools. A better world is possible – with your help. And we need your help. The Dallas Peace Center is a grassroots, volunteerdriven organization. We raise almost all of our funds through individual donations and programs like this one. be. As I animatedly shared with the front desk my displeasure another guess added that his experience was just as bad. Another guess left after waiting an hour for their meal only to be told it had been lost. It just so happened that another manager who was off duty and ended up helping me out. I didn’t get his name but he was working with the elevator repair guys. Now I understand this is a wonderful hotel in an up and coming area of the city. I would hate to have this one day represent the entire experience one could have but… NYLO management if you are reading you have a lot of work to do here. elcome to the weekend, baaaby! That huge sigh of relief you are hearing is coming from the collective spirits of parents all around the DFW.... "La-La-lalalalalala, kids are back in school Monday"! This has been an interesting end of summer for me, as I helped my youngest prepare her 1st classroom. She'll be teaching 1st grade, right out of college! It's amazing how much time and effort (not to mention their own money) I saw various teachers putting in to get their classrooms ready. I am not talking a few days or dollars, either, lol. Wow! There may be some slacker teachers, just like there are students who give less than they should, but take heart; we still have plenty of educational guides who are excited about the opportunity to mold our future! Blessings to all, who deal with our kids Monday thru Friday ALL day! Bet there will be a lot of 30 something’s (including teachers, lol) jammin at the Verizon in Grand Prairie Saturday night! You'll see 80's & 90's room poster boys, Bell Biv Devoe, Toni, Tony, Tone, Al B. Sure and the lovely ladies of SWV (Hi Coko, Tamara and Leele) in concert... So interesting to peep the artists that were hot when I first came to Dallas at KJMZ/100.3.JAMZ in

1990... Speaking of back in the day, lol... This week I was talking with my friend Sammi G. who did the Midday shows before me on 100.3 Jamz and K104... Really awesome to find out that she has almost 90 clients/shows for her Internet Radio biz, (fishbowlradionetwork.com)The Fishbowl Radio Network... Her story was very inspirational! That makes me wanna add a "where are they now" section about local Radio folks... For instance, I see Skip Murphy every week, Russ Parr and Easy Street are in Washington D.C., There is big news afoot for Skip Cheatham, Nippy Jones is a Reverend, and Sam Putney is putting on a show at KHVN-Heaven 97... I work with local Legend Dwayne Dancer at Cumulus Media Network... Baron Bacon is on vacation in Japan... Julie Summers, Scott West and others reside here in the DFW. Most are not in the industry, but many are, but at different levels... Maybe I will add that feature occasionally! In "Smokin Quik Bits" Kanye West just turned down a chance to be an American Idol judge, who needs an extra 15 Million a year... My partner Bloodhound Benny says the October 5th HBO showing of the film "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight", is gonna be good. "BB" went to a screening and said the film is deep and reveals some unknown stuff (Spoiler Alert) including why the strong dislike of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall for The Nation of Islam! man or dog By: ray Williams | It is very sad that we can now compare dog to man, or is this a black white thing. I remember so well that so many of our young Black men were murdered years ago burned, hanged or even shot to death by the other race and never have we had so much concern about a four legged animal. Thousands of dollars are spent trying to see that justice is done for some young men who mistreated a dog by setting him on fire by pouring lighter fluid on the animal and setting fire to it, wrong by all standards, but you were not near so quick to speak up for our brother, who were

killed like animals at one time. Michael Vick went to jail and his career was almost ended because he was connected to animal cruelty one way or another, see how it works, is there a comparison to the crime? Was it fair then? Is it fair now? YOU be the judge! When you can put the value of a dog life on the same level as man we do have a problem, even at today’s standard. Sad to say the leader of our country is having all kind of daily problems with our elected officials, just because he is a black man,

RB Garner (610 yards 6 TD’s) will carry the load on offense and FS Childress (6 INT’s 1TD) will be the top player on a very fast and talented defense. Roosevelt -This year’s team has a lot of speed on it. The Mustang has a new coach and it will be a learning curve for both players and coach. This years team is young and has some talent, LB Nicholas will make a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball. The Mustang secondary will surprise a lot of people and this team just has to play to win one game at a time. Wilmer –Hutchins - I like Coach Barnett, he works hard and he has had a lot of success putting players in college. This year’s team is loaded with talent and will make a run deep in the playoffs. The Defense will be nice FS Best (83 Tackles, 1 INT’s) LB Nicholson (65 Tackles, 6 sacks 9 TFL). The high school season is around the corner and the talent is real close. { AROUND TOWN } PASTORS OF LA A NEW REALITY SHOW - REALLY? ith all the different kinds of reality shows for us to immerse ourselves in there is one more coming to us this season, Pastors of LA. Bishop Noel Jones, Deitrick Haddon, Bishop Clarence McClendon, Pastor Wayne Chaney, Bishop Ron Gibson and Pastor Jay Haizlip will be bring to you a provocative look at their lives at home, in their pastoral duties and in the community. We will also see the lives of their congregation as these mega ministers bare it all on Oxygen. Now from what we know of reality TV we can question if this a pure entertainment offering or if we will be shown how these men of God work to plant more seeds for God to nurture and grow or a means to increase their income? Here’s Oxygen’s rundown of the pastors: Bishop Noel Jones: A Jamaican born into poverty but now lives on a Malibu hilltop with a view of the Pacific Ocean. He is pastor of a church full of celebrities and the brother of Grace Jones who is headed towards retirement and looking for a successor who he can entrust his life’s work. But finding the right man is harder than it sounds. Deitrick Haddon: The son of a bishop and an evangelist who has been preaching from the age of eleven and conducting the church choir at thirteen. At 23, he married the lead soprano in the church choir but after they divorced his members turned away from him. Aside from the call on his life, the one thing that helped him from hitting rock bottom was his music. At an impasse in life Pastor Haddon has to choose his path to go down. Which one will he choose? Bishop Clarence McClendon: McClendon is a charismatic and ubiquitous deliverer of the Gospel through his internationally broadcast he

W

reaches 250 million homes each week. He uses a contemporary approach to sharing the Gospel whose Ministry spans from skid row to the estates of Bel Air. Pastor Wayne Chaney: At the age of 20, Chaney got the call from God and has grown to become a prominent pastor of the church his grandfather built, Antioch. Antioch is the leading church in its community. With an ability to communicate complex truths in a simple way, Pastor Chaney has helped remarkably grow the church, along with the help of his secret weapon, his wife, gospel artist Myeshia Chaney. Poised to become the next mega-church with the ability to reach millions worldwide, there’s an obstacle in the way and it comes from within Pastor Wayne’s own family. Bishop Ron Gibson: Born in Compton, addicted to drugs before he was a teenager, a leader of the Crips by the time he was 16, a robber and a pimp, Bishop Ron Gibson now changes the lives of 4,500 people each week at the Life Church of God in Christ, which he started with only nine people in the congregation. With his s accumulated wealth, power and purpose there is one thing he and his wife long for – a child. Pastor Jay Haizlip: One of the pioneering greats of competitive skateboarding, Pastor Haizlip, originally from Gadsden, Alabama he collected trophies, big paychecks and high-end sponsors, but fell deep into drugs and the crack houses of Huntington Beach and Long Beach, California. He is now back in the same crack houses again only not to use drugs but to save souls for God. Should we see reality TV with the Men of God or should they keep their work in the pulpit?
