{ OUR WORDS } PRESIDENT OBAMA

{ FOUNDING THOUGHTS }

A BLESSED THANKSGIVING

BY DEBBIE BLAIR ABRON | PUBLISHER

BY WILLIAM “BILL” BLAIR | PUBLISHER

I

would like to wish all of our readers a blessed Thanksgiving holiday. This is a special time of year when families come together to give thanks for all of the great things that have come into their lives. It is a time of fellowship and prayer. During the Thanksgiving holidays we have an opportunity to reflect on those things that are of tremendous importance to us as individual as and as a community. The Dallas community has much to be grateful for.

T

he approval rating of our President has dipped below 50 percent and there are those who are comparing his presidency to that of former President George Bush. I think they are wrong because our current president has done more than most who have held the office in the last thirty years. He ended a war in Iraq and is bringing the war into Afghanistan to and end. He has fixed the economy and signed into law a health car law that will help all Americans. There have been no personal scandals in his life and no one in his administration has been indicted.

I am personally thankful for members of my family and for the readers who have supported the Elite Newspaper these many years. I am grateful to the members of the clergy and those who attend our churches for their unwavering support of a newspaper that is devoted to them and the events that occur in their churches.

I do not know who the people who do the polling telephone, but I have never been called and neither have any of my relatives and friends. The president has suffered through a bad time with the failure of the health care web site. But that will be fixed and before long his approval ratings will go back up, where they should be, and his detractors will have to find something else to talk about.

I am grateful for every day that God gives me. I have lived a long life and for that I am very grateful. I am grateful for the young people who will one day carry us into the future. They are very important and they are a blessing.

The fact is that President Obama has been one of the finest Presidents to serve this country in the 21st century. People tend to pick on you when you are down, but they can't keep President Obama down long. He is too smart and too professional for that to happen. Hang in there Mr. President.

his year Thanksgiving has become a very special day for me and my family. My wife has been preparing the house and cooking for a family day of thanks. With both of us having aging parents we are so thankful for them and their health. We are thankful that although my in laws are not able to be with us physically they are with us in love and in spirit. Grateful that my parents will be able to leave their health care facilities and join us in our home. Oh, how thankful I am that we will be together this day.

to meet our needs at the moment. For this I say thanks. For our reader and business partners here at Elite News on behalf of the Blair family I thank you for your love, support and partnership. It is through this love and support Elite News has been as successful as we have been for the last 53 years. We know that you can partner with other publications but your choice to do so with us humbles me. So as you finish up all the Turkey, dressing, ham, pies and cakes and start your shopping for Christmas remember to first stop and give thanks to our Maker, then your family and loved ones. Happy Thanksgiving from me and mine to you and yours!

For those of you who still have your parents take the time to show them your gratitude and love because if had not been for them you would not be who you are today. As parents we do our best to provide our children with love and guidance. We men tend to spoil our girls while you women do the same for your sons. Funny, how God made it. You need both parents to balance out and round out the rearing of a child.

or the next few weeks, I hope to encourage you to indulge in the school of "How to Pray"! The apostle Paul says in Romans 8:26 "For we know not how to pray as we should and ought". I am convinced and convicted that this is why we should constantly ask the Lord "Teach us to pray". It was with this deep consciousness of lack of "KnowHow" in prayer that the disciples said to Christ, "Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1). Prior to Christ teaching about prayer, He talked about motive in service and prayer and had condemned hypocritical public prayer, repetitious prayer. Therefore suggesting that God only hears sincere, earnest and heartfelt prayers.

CAN GOD REALLY MEET MY NEEDS?

1 Kings 17:7-14 7Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.8Then the word of the Lord came to him:9“Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.”10So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink? ”11As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” 12“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.

Page 8

14For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’

B

e careful what you pray for you just might get it. That is exactly what happened to Elijah. He took on the dubious joy of praying against his own nation as it fell deeper and deeper into sin. Jew and Gentile, young and old, person and livestock were all in the midst of a deep drought and the famine that went with it. Why, because Ahab, King of Israel, had decided to worship the god of his wife, Jezebel. It was a scant fifty years after Solomon when Ahab rose to power. The once peaceful nation had been torn apart by warfare both from within and without. They had split into a Northern and Southern kingdom and of the six kings who had ruled in Israel three of them had been murdered. Now to complicate matter Baal, a Canaanite god often linked to rain had begun to be worshipped in earnest in Samaria. And God had had enough. If the people wanted to worship this Baal then let Baal provide the rains.

www.dfwelitenews.com

In chapter 17 we see Elijah on the run. This servant of the Lord has been kept by a stream and fed by ravens an unclean bird to Jews. But now the creek had shriveled up from the drought and so it was time to move but where? A reluctant, hopeless, and unlikely servant of the God of Israel is seen in Sidon the nation where Jezebel is from. She’s a single mother and is making preparations for her and her sons last supper when Elijah is there at the gate. “Get me some water and if you please a loaf of bread” is what Elijah asks for. What this woman discovers is that her obedience to this request unleashes God’s greatness and blessings in her life in unexpected ways. I think you can tell by the way she refers to “your God” that she isn’t thrilled with what is happening. Her limitations make it difficult to trust this God she did not know as well as this strange man. Lastly what we discover is that God’s provision becomes apparent when we live beyond our limitations as this woman did as we step out on faith and obey. Greenberg Turkeys

{ NATIONAL REVIEW }

H

mmmmmm! It is the holiday season and time for the best smoked turkeys around, Greenberg Turkeys from Tyler Texas. For the past 2 years I have sent this delectable item to my parents in California and gotten a few (yes I said more than one) for our house. I can’t tell the kids that we have one or the bird will look like vultures have descended and devoured it in matter of minutes. I am not sure how they do it but these turkeys ship well and can be eaten right out of the refrigerator or hot. Last Sunday right after church I took the drive out to Tyler and picked up those needed for Thanksgiving. Now if you are driving a car, do not torture yourself and drive with them in the car. PUT THEM IN THE TRUNK or the bird may not make it home. I was driving a SUV so there was no relief I had the aroma with me the entire trip home. Shhhh don’t tell my husband!!! I did have to stop and shop so I got out cracked the windows and took a little break. LOL really I did.. Once home one of the birds did not make it, my husband has been slicing the poor thing at every chance he can. I looked at it and it is a done deal. He will not make it to Thanksgiving. Now after Thanksgiving and if you are

making greens, beans, soups or chowders I love to take the carcass of the Greenberg Turkey and make the best greens, beans, soups or chowders. The only problem is I have to hide the meat to do so. The flavor is so intense you do not have to add much seasoning just cook and enjoy! One of the joys of Greenberg’s is that you may have missed Thanksgiving there is Christmas. You should order early and if you do not want to take the drive out to Tyler have them ship it to you for delivery just before Christmas. To share the joy of the holiday season, do like I do, and send a gift to family members out of state. Hey. What a wonderful ideal for a Christmas gift. As always share Just a Bite with me and get a Greenberg Turkey and eat until you are full! Greenberg Smoked Turkeys Inc. / 221 McMurrey Dr / Tyler, TX 75702 / 903-5950725 / www.gobblegobble.com

DECEMBER 1 IS WORLD AIDS AWARENESS DAY

BY BARBARA MALLORY CARAWAY |

D

ecember 1st is Wo r l d Aids Awareness Day. The day was created in 1988 by the United Nations World Health Organization as an opportunity for people to learn more about HIV/AIDS, and promote education about this disease and protect against it. This year’s theme is “Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation”. The day also presents a coordinated effort by individuals, organizations and other interest groups an opportunity to help people with AIDS and donate to eradicate the disease. More than 40 million people worldwide have AIDS. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), more than a one million people in the U. S. 13 years and older are living with HIV infection, including 207,600 or 18% that are unaware that they are infected. Gay, bisexual, and other men, who have sex with men (MSM), are most seriously affected by HIV, young African American/black MSM in particular. African Americans overall face the most challenges of HIV because of socioeconomic and cultural biases.

The CDC also reports that in 2011 an estimated 49,273 people were diagnosed with HIV infection in the United States and 32,052 were diagnosed with AIDS. Almost 636,000 people in the United States who were diagnosed with AIDS have died since the epidemic began. New infections women are primarily caused by heterosexual contact or drug injection. In 2010 women accounted for 20% of estimated new HIV infections and 24% of those living with HIV infection in 2009. These numbers though, reflect a decrease from new infections that occurred in 2009. Minority communities traditionally shy away from discussing HIV/AIDS due the stigma that comes with it. When the disease first went on the radar in 1981, the CDC first alerted the public about a strange deadly pneumonia that was discovered in 5 gay men living in Los Angeles. The disease for many years was identified with the gay community. Over the years those identifiers have changed. African Americans cases of HIV continue to increase compared with other races and ethnicities. African Americans are

www.dfwelitenews.com

about 12% of the U.S. population but make up nearly 44% of new HIV infections in 2010. Since the epidemic began, at least 260,800 African Americans have died with an AIDS diagnosis. If this trend continues, an estimated 1 in 16 African American men and 1 in 32 African American women will be diagnosed with HIV infection. Within recent years the number of persons 50 years and older diagnosed with HIV/AIDS has increased. Many older persons are sexually active but may not be practicing safe sex to reduce infection of HIV. Drug use also puts them at high risk. The rates of HIV/AIDS among persons 50 and older were 12 times as high among African Americans and 5 times as high among Hispanics compared with whites. Therefore it is important that this age group is educated on preventive measures of being infected. They are however, in part to the antiretroviral therapy (HAART), living longer with the disease. Basketball great Ervin “Magic” Johnson is one of the most public individual living with AIDS. Johnson announced in 1991 that he had contracted AIDS through many female sexual partners. At the time he was newly married and his wife Cookie was just a few months pregnant with their first child. Magic Johnson has continued to live a productive life. He attributes his longevity to state of the art treatment and a healthy life style. Some more notable people who have died from AIDS, through various infections have been entertainer Liberace, actor Rock Hudson, dance choreographer Alvin Ailey, Rapper Easy-E, fashion designer Willi Smith, 13 year old Ryan White who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion as well as tennis great, and Arthur Ashe also reportedly contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. Others include Model Gia Garanji, actors, Larry, Riley, and Robert Reed. News anchor Max Robinson also succumbed to the AIDS virus. On December 1, 2013 learn the facts about HIV/AIDS. You can get tested, take action to education about infection risk and wear a red ribbon. To learn more about World AIDS Day and how you can participate go to AIDS.gov. Barbara Mallory Caraway served six years in the Texas Legislature and eight years as a member of the Dallas City Council.

hen you think of success you typically think about a person’s credentials; what college did they graduate from, where did they grow up who are their parents? When you ask Michael McBay he will tell you that it has nothing to do with your social background, your sex or your ethnicity. He says it is all about your heart and your drive to succeed. The bigger your heart and the stronger your drive the larger your success and he has a big heart and even stronger drive. Born to parents like most of us have he was raised in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas after McBay’s parents moved from Jefferson Texas in 1973. McBay graduated from DW Carter high school in 1990 where he played Basketball. He goal was to play professional basketball and was on the path to do just that when he was blessed with his first daughter, Adrianna. After her birth McBay changed his focus and wanted to make sure his daughter was financially secure and in 1997 his desire was to practice law. After becoming a certified Paralegal McBay worked for talented and powerful attorneys in the Metroplex. Still on a path to become an attorney yet having a strong drive to succeed McBay became an independent contractor. For ten years McBay worked with good attorneys and grew his em-

After being introduced into network distribution, commonly known as network marketing. This introduction taught him the difference of making money versus producing wealth; wealth that could be multigenerational a source that would give his family the financial security he was looking for. But to obtain it McBay had to come out of his comfort zone and look at things differently.

MCBAY PROTEGE MAKING IT BIG

After taking a serious look at this industry he studied what it took to be successful and what the industry leaders did to earn their wealth. Positioning himself in front of what McBay believed to be the correct wealth trend and working with the right leadership team he excelled and reached the top of the compensation plan and was a Sr. Vice President nationwide within 24 months. During this time McBay learned that he enjoyed the impacts he had on the lives of others financially and personally. He loved watching his team getting energized and capturing their new found wealth. Giving people a reason to dream again was equally exciting.

BY LORIE BLAIR we must understand is with all the negative places, people and things we are associated with daily we ultimately develop that negative energy subconsciously. If all you know is all you know, how can you grow? People know no more than they are exposed to. My business purpose is to continue to impact the people mentally to transition their thought process. When we change your way of thinking, we can change your way of doing things. When you change your way of doing things you can change your financial situation. No matter what your color, age, gender, background education level is you to can live your dreams. All you need is will and desire; the Desire to want more and the Will to work through ad-

A lot of the attention so far has gone to the talented class of freshman. Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins and Julius Randle have already captivated college basketball this season. Smart by passed the NBA draft to return to OSU for a second year. Some people are talking and trying to compare the freshman to Smart. Some say Smart lack's Parker's five position capability, Wiggins' feathery ease and Randle's ferocious physicality inside. everal weeks back, the Dallas Cowboys were in a scoring contest with the Denver Broncos and everybody top scoring quarterback Peyton Manning. As per usual the boys came up short. Late in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys were up and only had to run the clock out. They couldn't hold on to the lead, I wrote at the time the man responsible for running the clock out was sitting on the bench injured as usual; Demarcus Ware and Moe Claiborne etc. Well yesterday those men came to work and Lil Abner (Eli Manning) and

pounds Smart can guard three position if need be. Through four games, that skill set has allowed Smart to put up some great numbers against the competition. Although the conversation has been focused on the three freshman phenoms, Smart has outplayed Wiggins with less talent to support him.

tribute the ball and contribute on the boards. Smart is also a great defender. Other players might have better looking numbers but Smart is a winner.

Smart is also great on defense. Let's talk about his nine steal performance against Utah State. Keep in mind it takes a special player to get nine rips in one game. For the season Smart has upped his percentage from 40.4 shooting and 29.5 on threes to 45.1 shooting and 38.5 respectively. Smart had an outstanding game against the No.11 Memphis. Smart scored 39 points on 11-of-21 shooting including 5-of - 10 from beyond the three- point line. Smart has also added 4 rebounds, 4 assist, and 2 blocks and 5 steals. OSU is currently ranked seventh in the nation. If the Cowboys can beat Wiggins' Kansas squad and finish the season as a Top Five team, Smart will Get credit for the team’s success. Smart is a polished shooter who can dis-

his friends bit the dust. The Cowboys had some names on their roster that were recognizable. Ware, Hatcher, Claiborne and although he's not a household name but at least he started somewhere the season here, George Selve, hunting ain't much fun now that the rabbit got the gun. Cowboy fans please don't to elated, that was the New York Giants the team that broke out of the gate 0-6. The same Giant team that the east coast press tried to make you think he found a short cut to get to the Super Bowl. They lost 6 straight games, no significant injuries the won 4 straight, REALLY! There's false sense of bravado on the east coast like no other place in the world. They first tried to make you

think that Michael Vick and the Eagles were going to revolutionize the game. For years, I tried to tell you Michael and Tony Romo were twins. I'll take that back Tony is better than Vick, Eli, and the jury is still out on RGIII. That's why Tex Schram was so adamant about playing in the Eastern division; the Cowboys are leading a division that no one thought they could finish no higher than 3rd. With Tony Romo as quarterback, the lowest paid quarterback in the division, the only un-drafted free agent starting in the league. Tex knew if you could get a big stick and clean out that east coast good things could happen to you like being called America's team. Then along comes Jerry and Jimmie, I have no idea if you realize how strong the NFC east was when Jerry came in not just the east the whole league was strong. The Eagle had the best team they ever had. Jerome Brown and Mike Golic at D tackle, Reggie White, Clyde Simmons at ends, Lawrence Taylor and Phil Sims in the Big Apple, Doug Williams, Art Monk, Daryl Green in D.C. and Joe Montana and half the hall of fame was in San Francisco. That's when the boys came in and took 3 super bowls. In the future when you hear Stephen A. Smith go on his favorite rants against the Cowboys you know why. Especially when he says his favorite teams are the Giants Jets and Eagles the Cowboys have winning records against team in the east by double digits.
