hen the St. Louis Cardinal and Boston Red Sox played in the World Series in the 1940's there was not a black baseball players in either dugout. Today, while the two teams are playing there is only one black player, a reserve who plays for Boston. There is something wrong in baseball that so few black players are now in the game. The percentage of Major League Black players are less than ten percent. That should not be that way. Baseball is too great of a game, filled with great black history that so few blacks should be found between the lines. Major League Baseball is trying to do something to attract younger black baseball players. It has started inner-city programs. I would suggest that they start baseball academies like the Dominicans did many years ago. Today, the Dominican percentage of babe ball players exceeds that of African Americans. Baseball is a great game and there are many rewards to playing it and that is why we cannot afford to see so few black’ players in the game. We need to encourage our young people to play the game and get involved in its administration. It will be a great step for them to take.

I

want to remind people that when Social Security was launched in this country fifty years ago there were problems with its implementation. The same was true for the Medicare Drug Prescription programs that began when George Bush was president.

It seems that everyone is jumping on President Obama because the computers are not working properly, But I think that we have to look at the larger position. Because of the Affordable Health Care Act, people who had preexisting conditions are not able to get insurance, college students are able to stay on their parent's plan and millions of people who were not able to get coverage will finally have the security that comes with knowing that you can afford to go see physician or other healthcare professional. I want to know where all of the critics were when people were crying out for healthcare and could not get any. If you recall when Clinton started the process of trying to provide health care coverage for everyone his effort were shot down. It took the efforts of the Obama administration to get us a program that is fair and equitable for all people. It is easy to critique something sitting on the sidelines, like so many of our friends on Congress who have voted to repeal the law which, by the way, has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court as Constitutional. So, what do they want? They want to stop President Obama in any way that they can. They want to make sure that his legacy is one that says he accomplished nothing but you know what, they will not be successful. The Affordable Care Act is here to stay!

ast week we reported the news that KwanzaaFest was cancelled. At the time we went to press this was the news of the moment. We also noted the real looser of this cancellation would be the community in which many residents get their only access to medical services and screenings.

Well, as the Texas weather goes so goes the news; stay tuned things change and in the case of KwanzaaFest it is now back on. After hearing and reading the news report, volunteers and new sponsors came to the aid of the organizers and the needs of the community will be met. We applaud all who have made the effort to allow the event to continue, after all it is all about the needs of our community that matters the most!

HEALING PROPERTIES OF A HEALTHY DIET

M

ore than a thousand people turned out to Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas on Saturday, October 12, 2013, for a Heart2Heart talk on heart health and the healing properties of a healthy diet. The Heart2Heart conference is a project of passion for Friendship West First Lady Debra Peek-Haynes. "I want people in the African-American community to take control of their health," she told the audience as she shared her journey to healing by eating healthy. Mrs. Peek-Haynes' passion for holistic healing developed 22 years ago when five top physicians told her she would not be able to get pregnant. With the help of a holistic gynecologist, Mrs. Peek-Haynes changed her diet and was able to give birth to her daughter, Abeni, who is now 21-years old. "I was told I was in premature menopause and my cycle had stopped," Mrs. Peek Haynes said. "My cycle restarted in two months after I changed my diet. I was pregnant within a year." Mrs. Peek-Haynes says she ate a lot of dark greens and sea-

weed during that time. "We have to learn how to eat right to live better and have energy," Mrs. Peek-Hayes told the crowd. "We also have to teach our children how to eat right before they develop bad habits. There are consequences to eating bad food." Mrs. Peek-Haynes cautioned the audience to stop eating white sugar and flour. "White sugar is a drug. It is toxic. Use natural sweeteners like agave and Stevia instead." The crowd laughed as Mrs. Peek-Haynes told them to be careful of the oils they use, "What is a canola? Have you ever seen a canola?" She then gave tips on the best types of oil to use for marinating, baking and sautéing.

well as substitutes for bad food ingredients. She concluded her presentation by cooking up some healthy collard greens and a vegetarian stir-fry that included raw cashews and a delicious seasoning sauce made with fresh ginger. Men from the audience who sampled the food gave it a thumbs-up. Although Debra Peek-Haynes is not a licensed health professional, she can explain how to avoid many health problems like diabetes and heart disease by having a proper diet. She provides practical tips from a layperson's perspective in her new book, The Beginner's Guide to Healthy Living. In it, she describes how to substitute good ingredients for bad ingredients as well as exchanging good habits for bad habits. The book is a guide for the entire family on how to develop a healthy lifestyle. Mrs. Peek-Haynes is preparing to take her conference on the road for a 12city, mega-church tour in 2014. ow, let us take note of the prelude to prayer. The question is, what is it that brings us to our Prayer Closet? It may be an intuition of prayer. It may be a habit of prayer growing out of frequent admonition. Even the most explosive and effectual prayer has a background in the life of him who prays, something which paved the way for the purpose of coming to his prayer closet. God in his infinite wisdom, has not left us without guidance in proper preparation for effective prayer. S.D. Gordon, who during his lifetime often stated, “Prayer is a working agreement, a fixed and invariable one, between man and God.” First there must be a time spent in communication; second, there must be a place. Third, the prayer must be in Jesus’ name. Fourth, he who prays must be in touch with heart, habit and life. Fifth, the prayer must be in harmony with the teaching of the bible, and sooner or later, definite results will come.

PREACHERS OF L.A.

The new reality TV show the Preachers of LA has caused people to look at the mega ministry totally different in the short time this show has been televised. Some viewers are already drawing some negative thoughts about the lives of these families with good reason after seeing the few episodes that have aired. The show portrays those that are to lead in a godly life are filled with self-serving attitudes and lives. Men of God are thought to be noble and above the things of the world when in reality the show portrays that just like all of us they are full of sin and the challenges of the world just like the rest of us. I have family members who are in the congregation body of three of the cast member and they are not very happy with what they see weekly on TV. Some people are

www.dfwelitenews.com

offended by what they see and hear and other think it is a joke .This type of exposure has cause some to look at the church as a place for a few ministers to expose what really goes on in some church pulpit. You go to church on Sunday to spiritually refill the mind and body so you can endure another week. You look for the positive to help you better cope with and to let go of the negative thoughts and we are bombarded with throughout the day and week. Then you turn on and watch our spiritual leaders on television living the life they try to teach us we are not to live. Doing the things we are taught are not of God. Preachers need to live the life they teach so that it followers will not get confused, minister to us on a level so all can understand how Gods Words are to be applied in our lives.

ot sure what is going on in our society when what, appears to be rational people, throw lighter fluid on the elderly and set them on fire. The thought that there is any reason that a person could believe someone deserves to be set on fire is demented and cruel.

The poet wrote “ May the work I’ve done, speak for me, when I’m resting in my grave and there is nothing than can be said may the Work I’ve done speak for me “ We cannot and shall not forget the Heroes of the Past. These doctors and others like them gave their time for our Health Make plans now to come view the Gone But – Not Forgotten Exhibit at the African American Museum of History & Culture in the Historic Fair Park .. In the commission of the crime of robbery 38 year old Matthew Lee Johnson poured lighter fluid on 76 year old convenience store worker Nancy Harris and set her on fire. There is no reason to believe that a 38 year old man needed to use such measures to escape from a 72 year old woman. At his age he could out run and overpower her. There was no need to set her on fire and burn her to death.

Your brother through calvary’s ties. Rev. A. Ray Barnett, PhD.

My heart is heavy for the family member who has to live knowing that their Mother,

www.dfwelitenews.com

Sister, Wife or any other family member died this way. My heart is also heavy for the family of the man who committed this crime. To know that their family member could do such an unthinkable act is beyond my understanding. What is wrong in our society that the thoughts and acts are so horrible that we see pure evil acts committed against one another? There are cases where I think there should be the abolishment of the death penalty but in this instance I am secure that the death penalty is warranted. The thought that anyone should live after committing such an act is beyond reason. This is the crime that the proponents of the death penalty will use to say it is needed. This is the case that everyone can stand united and say the punishment cannot be severe enough!

1 Corinthians 10:14-22

14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf. 18Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s Table and the table of demons. 22Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 22 Someone sent me a cartoon this week. It shows a mother and son walking home from church, and the mom says, “The next time Pastor Bob ask you what the sermon was about, do not say, ‘About three hours’!” Special occasions are often connected with food. Thanksgiving, Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays, etc. Friday evening I attended a dinner at a church for the Boy Scouts. All afternoon I could smell the great meal Mrs. Ross was preparing downstairs! Whenever there’s a special meal, we can’t wait to be told: “Come to the table!” This morning, Jesus has set the table and is invit-

November 1 2013

ing us, “Come to My Table.” There are several things we need to “bring to the table.” Before we sit down to a meal, we need clean hands. You do not work in the garden or garage and then come inside, sit down, and eat dinner. You wash up first. This is why the Bible tells us to examine our lives before receiving Communion. We may see something that needs to be confessed and cleaned up. When we were kids, we occasionally had to go to bed without supper because we did something bad. When we come to Jesus with remorse and repentance, we find forgiveness, restoration, and an invitation to His table. Some people get so burdened by their sins, that instead of asking forgiveness, they figure they’re too unworthy to participate, and they pass the tray without partaking. None of us are worthy, but if we’ve trusted Christ, we are eligible. He invites and authorizes us to come to the table. Also before dining, we need a good appetite. What would happen if you were invited to someone’s house for dinner and an hour before the meal you ate a bag of chips, a Coke, and a package of Twinkies? After all this junk food, you would have little appetite for the good stuff! Paul tells us, “you cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s Table and the table of demons” (vs. 21). God offers us a substantive meal, the Bread and Cup won’t fill us up physically, but they will satisfy our spiritual hunger. When we stuff ourselves with the junk food of sin we lose our appetite for the banquet God has prepared for us. We need to “taste and see” the satisfying goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:8). glitCheS Continue over healthCare roll out and new voter law in effeCt

By BarBara mallory Caraway |

P

resident Obama apologized for the problematic roll out of the Affordable Care Act and the malfunction with the HealthCare.gov website responsible for enrolling millions of people in the program. Marilyn Tavenner, Medicare Chief, in charge of setting up the program also apologized for the glitches that have prevented Americans seeking accessible, affordable, quality healthcare from signing up. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will testify before the Energy and Commerce Committee later this week on the status of Mr. Obama’s signature legislation. She is expected to blame contractors who designed the software. The President, under pressure from some members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, healthcare providers and Americans alike, issued an extension for those signing up for healthcare by March 31, 2014 to avoid a penalty. The Administration says the problems will be fixed by November 31st. He is also asking for patience as the new law is implemented. According to some news reports, currently insured persons are receiving cancellation notices of their insurance. That is because Obamacare requires different coverage rules. Services that were not covered under their previous plans are now required to be included. This may also cause a change in their coverage cost. Be sure and talk to your service care provider about these potential changes. Secondly, I want to remind voters that the new Texas Photo ID law is now in effect. Therefore, persons voting in the upcoming November 5th Constitutional Amendment election will have to present a state approved photo ID to vote. The four categories of acceptable forms of Photo ID are: 1. Department of Public Safety issued Texas Drivers License, Texas ID, Texas Concealed Hand Gun Permit and an Election Id Certificate. 2. Military ID Cards, i.e., Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC), Uniformed Services ID Cards, DoD Civilian Retiree Cards, Veterans Affairs ID Cards, 3.

www.dfwelitenews.com

Citizenship or Naturalization Certificate, 4. Passport Book or Passport ID Card. I have written in a previous article regarding the change in the Texas Voting Laws that requires that every voter present an approved Photo ID when voting in person. As the November 5th election approaches, I have heard concern from voters especially who are concerned about whether or not they will be more disenfranchised by this new law. Women are especially concerned because the name on their Photo ID and voter’s role may not be the same on the because they are married and use a hyphenated name or some who’s middle name may be on their voter’s card but not on their driver’s license. Therefore they will not be allowed to vote. The explanation in the law says that the photo ID and the name on the voter’s role must be “substantially similar” to the voter’s name as it appears on the official list of registered voters. This means that the name on the ID is slightly different from one or more of the name fields on the official list of registered voters. 2. The name on the voter’s ID or on list of registered voters is a customary variation of the voter’ formal name. 3. The voter’s name contains an initial, middle name, or former name that is either not on the official list of registered voters or on the voter’s ID. The election worker is allowed to consider whether information on the official list of registered voters, like the voter’s residence address or date of birth, is an official indicator. In most cases if you show up to vote you will be allowed to vote even if it is in the form of a provisional ballot. You may also be required to take additional steps to verify that you are the person on your Photo in rare cases and for your vote to be finally cast. You can get additional answers as to if and why these rules will apply by visiting your local county elections website or the Texas Secretary of State website. If you would like to request an exemption to using a photo ID to vote, you may also find out what those exemptions are. But I would strongly tell you not to allow this law to prevent you from exercising your right to vote. It is important that we all show up and vote regardless of the election or issue. It’s your way of participating in the system. Barbara Mallory Caraway served 6 years in the Texas House of Representatives and 8 years on the Dallas City Council.

Terror in Terrell

{ COVER STORY }

T

hirty miles east of Dallas on what appeared to be a normal Monday a city and it residents all lived 8 hour under siege by a single man. At 5pm the city of Terrell was shocked to its core. After a report of shots being fired the body of Charles Everett Barlow Jr.’s 55 year old aunt, Belinda Walker was found in her home. A single shot to the head and she laid dead in her home. She was the first victim of many to come in the next 8 hours. Shortly thereafter and a few blocks away Barlow’s mother,61 year old Mary Barlow was found dead in her bedroom again with a single gunshot wound to the head. She was found by firefighters who spotted flames coming from out of the home he shared with his mother. It was apparent the fire was arson to cover up the murder of Mrs. Barlow. Missing was her 2002 white Ford Focus. Next, Barlow’s Terrell High School alum, 33 year old Jason Wooden and 30 year old Kelleye Lynnette Sluder were found dead in their home. Their 3 year old son was left in the home unharmed and he was able to tell police that a guy had come into their home and shot both of his parents. Five hours after the killings began Barlow walked into a Mexican Restaurant; Taqueria Dos Aces looking a bit

“strange” asking for someone he thought worked at the restaurant. The manager and Eric Fargosa and 20 year old hostess were able to provide the police with a description of what Barlow was wearing and that he seemed a bit strange and mumbled when he spoke to them. After being shown to a table he left the restaurant without incident. An hour later, Barlow was spotted at Ali’s Market where off duty Terrell Police Sargent, J Hobbs, who knew Barlow from previous encounters, spotted the white Ford Focus he was driving in the parking lot. After radioing for back up, Sargent Hobbs watched from his personal vehicle while it appeared that Barlow was making a purchase. Once he left the store a police pursuit ensued and after a brief chase by care and on foot Barlow was arrested without any additional incidents and by 1:30am the killing spree was over. The city could sigh a sigh of relief. Later it was discovered that his fifth and final victim LealCarillo, Ali’s Market clerk had also been shot and lay dead behind the counter. Barlow’s brother, Terrence Walker identified both his aunt and mother’s bodies. He is quoted saying “I am at a loss;

www.dfwelitenews.com

my mom was so quiet and good. I am devastated, I’m in a daze. It must have been drugs.” It is also reported that Walker had heard that his brother and his mother had been going through some issues but he could not understand how anyone could take the life of their own mother. Terrell police are not providing much information on any motive. Chief of Police Jody Lay has stated “We are all in a state of shock. This is going to have a big impact on us.” After being charged with 1 count of capital murder and evading arrest Tuesday Barlow was transferred to the Kaufman County Jail where he is being held without bail. It is expected that as their investigation continues there will be more charges filed against Barlow. As the community mourns this tragedy families are making arrangements to lay their loved ones to rest. It is senseless to know there are so many lives altered and changed just by the acts of one man.

he Cowboys game against the Lions was a lot of things. It was very exciting. It was a great game that showcased some of the top talent in the NFL. But the thing I liked the most about that game was the performance by our homeboy Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford put on a clinic against the Cowboys. But Stafford has been amazing fans as long as he has been playing. Let's check out some of this kid’s performances. • Matthew Stafford graduated high school early and enrolled at the University of Georgia in January and Stafford became the

have an old saying and from time to time I mention it to athletes. “Want to, beats can do, especially when can do don’t want to.” When can do wants to, You have the Usain Bolt, Emmitt Smith, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan etc. The world is full of those “Can do guys that don’t want to do anything, it’s extremely noticeable in the NFL, and it gets worst each week. The Dallas Cowboys lost a good game to the Detroit Lions 31 -30. The beautiful part of that game was, there are a lot of guys on the Cowboys team that makes my theory right. There’s a lot of young men that bought into the Idea that one man go down is an opportunity for another to step up. Let me explain WANT TO, these are the big heart guys that realize that things may not always be right, but it’s real. And they go out and give it all they have every time they get the chance. Those Can Do guys are the once you see standing on the side line advertizing baseball caps, these guys are blessed with the talent but they don’t have anything in their chest that

first true freshman Bulldog QB to start since Quincy Carter in 1998. • While in college Stafford was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice during the 2006 season. • Named Rivals.com's National Freshman of the week. • 2006 UG Offensive Newcomer of the Year. • 2006 SEC Coaches All-Freshman Team • Offensive MVP 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl • 2008 All-America by Pro Football Weekly • 2008 All-Sec Second Team • 2009 MVP Capital One Bowl On January 1,2012, Stafford became the fourth QB in NFL history and the third in the 2011 season, along with Tom Brady, and Drew Brees, to throw for 5,000 yards in a season. Matthew was the second- youngest quarterback in NFL history. Over the last four games of the 2011 regular season, Stafford became the only quarterback in NFL history to pass for 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns in a four game time span.

even resembles a heart. The Cowboys had a chance to win the game all they needed was a first down, but the man responsible for that, or should I say, was hired for that purpose was setting on the side line with a baseball cap on Demarco Murry, they could have used a quarterback sack, but as so often it happens the man hire to do that was on the side line. DeMarcus Ware although this is only his second game he’s missed in his career, too frequently in crucial situations he’s on the side line. Marvin Austin, Drake Nevis, Nick Hayden, Jason Hatcher that’s the defensive line that was expected to stop one of the best young quarterbacks in the game, with the best receiver in the game. Top draft pick last year Mo Claiborne on the side line with the rest of those can do guys, letting the want to guys fight the battles. That’s happening all over the league the high dollar boys are not playing. They’re styling baseball caps when these games are decided. And idiots like Stephen A Smith are ranting and raving negatively about Dallas and he’s not smart enough to realize the guys on the field at crunch time was unemployed this time last year. I think they’re better off with Miles Austin on the sideline or at home, Murray can be replaced by any one that can play all year. Everybody in the free world knows this will not be the last time Murray or Austin will be hurt, this season. Looking at the games the Cowboys lost this year, now you can see how Kansas City can go from 2-14 to 8-0 this year. The Cowboys lost to 3 of the league’s best teams Denver, Kansas city, Detroit by 5 points total.

Stafford has 14,069 yards through 49 games, surpassing Kurt Warner(13,864) for the best 50- game start to a career. Stafford also holds the 50- game record for completions at 1,214, over Marc Bulger's at 1,115. Stafford is also second in career 300-yard passing performances through 50 games at 19 behind Kurt Warner. Stafford most passing yards through 50 games with 14,069; most completions through 50 games -1,214; most TDs in a single game by a Rookie-5 Youngest QB to pass for 5 or more TDs in a single game. He is the first player to pass 1,500 yards and 14 TDs in a 4 game span; most yards thrown without a TD -443 yard; most passing attempts727; most games with 40 + pass attempts in a season. I just wanted the sports world to know that Stafford is going to rewrite the NFL record books and this young man will play in a Superbowl before his career is over!!! Thanks for Reading May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World!!

Welcome to the weekend, baaaby!

ood luck to the Dallas Mavericks on the new season! I'm not sure who made the Mav's schedule, but the 1st week is tough... The Memphis Grizzlies and the surprisingly good (without Kobe) L.A. Lakers are at the AA Center Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.

beat down faces up to 180 days in jail... I hate to say it, but that might be the best thing for him... Hip Hop Singer Lil Mo suggests he needs his Momma around him and Mike Tyson spoke out to say that he was worried about Brown...Gotta love that Mike Tyson! One day he's gonna run up against someone who ain't Rhianna or a photo groupie, if he continues down his path... The best Christmas stocking stuffer for guys will be Mike Tyson's Memoir, "Undisputed Truth"... I am waiting on my copy for a preview, but trust me; Iron Mike's story is juicy to the max... According to my partner Bloodhound Benny in Vegas, Mike holds nothing back!

Ever been to a class reunion? Well this weekend, I'll be heading to a reunion of the staff at the first radio Station I worked at in 1979. The station was located in Downtown Texarkana, Texas! I responded yes and the 10 minute trip from Sunset to 303 W. Broad Street took all of 6 minutes, lol! 34 years later, I'm still on the Radio, blessed to be broadcasting to 100 plus U.S. cities on The Cumulus Media Network, but it all started in that tiny studio in downtown m ike t ySon & m uhammad a li Texarkana! 26, "Everybody Hates Chris" older brother Speaking of downtown...Can someone slap Tequan Richmond 25 and Willow Smith is Chris Brown?
