I
n a matter of week the world will acknowledge the assassination of President John F. Kennedy who was killed on November 23rd during a trip to Texas. All of us remember, for the most part, where we were when a madman killed one of our most beloved presidents.
The shooting gave Dallas a bad name and I cannot remember the time that a member of the Kennedy family has visited our city. The climate at the time was full of hatred for the young president. It was not a pretty sight to witness. When President Kennedy was killed the leadership of the country was turned over to a Texan, Lyndon B. Johnson. President Johnson picked up on the civil rights legislation that the fallen president had given birth to. Because of his leadership and his experience, President Johnson was able to shepherd the bills through Congress. The Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act were both planted in the mind of President Kennedy and we owe him for that. While he grew up in privilege in Massachusetts he witnessed the bitter suffering that people of color experienced in the South and he grew passionate about or plight. He decided to do something about it, but was cut down before his time. Thank God that President Kennedy lived. His heart spoke to the nation from the grave. He led us to believe that we could overcome.

oth my mother and father are ill at the moment. They have lived a long time, and during these moments you come to appreciate how much they mean in your life and in the lives of people that they touched. In their lives they have both touched lots of people in this city. My mother, for instance, had one of the finest catering businesses in the city of Dallas. As young teenagers, my siblings and I used to work with her at various homes throughout the city. Most of them were in North Dallas and we experienced all social levels of people. Our mother treated everyone the same. She believed in high quality service for all of her clients and gave them nothing but the best. Many of the people that she did work for came to love her and treated her like she was a member of their families. Often they gave her gifts for her children. They loved her like a sister. It is difficult watching mother and daddy age. They were once so vibrant and full of energy. But as I think about it, aging is something that all of us will experience. God is good to those who live long years. God has been good to both mother and dad. And for that we are all grateful. If you are blessed to have aging parents, do what you can for them. Call them each day, tell them that you love them and that you are grateful for what they did in your lives. That will mean so much to them and so much to you as well.

O
ne of Elite News largest events is the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival. This year marks the 28th year we have hosted the event here in Dallas. Each year we have more and more participants and people who just come out to attend. It is a well received and attended by the residents of Dallas and the surrounding cities.
What is most important to remember is that this event is in remembrance of the struggle of our Civil Rights and the greatest nonviolent Civil Rights Leader, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The Civil Rights Movement goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination that was used against black and to ensure our voting rights that were extended to us through the constitution. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin through employment and housing. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 that restored and protected our rights to vote.

The leader of the Civil Rights Movement was Martin Luther King Jr. He was a Baptist Minister, humanitarian, Civil Rights Activist who led the charge using nonviolent civil disobedience. Martin Luther King led the charge and ended up giving up his life for this belief. January 20, 2014 Elite News will once again celebrate the life and the cause of Martin Luther King in our 28th Annual MLK Parade and Festival. Although we have come a long way from the 60’s we still have challenges to overcome. We still need to remember that not so long ago we struggled to gain the right to vote and even today we see new challenges that threaten this right. We welcome all to come and celebrate the man and the cause for both the parade and festival.

MAVERICKS GO BACK TO THE FUTURE
T
he Mavericks are going back to the future this season. As they continue to try and rebuild from the rubbles of failed plans following their championship season, they are going to resemble some of the old Don Nelson Mavericks’ teams at the start of the alts. Running and gunning and not a whole lot of defense! However, there will be a slight difference from those teams. While Nelson had no interest in defense, current Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle will continue to try and preach on it as a measure of playing time.
“I also think Monta (Ellis) will help take a lot of the load off of Dirk to do all of the scoring. Monta is a proven scorer in this league, and he can create and get his own shot. The key thing is developing the chemistry between those two guys to learn to play off of each other. And I’m sure Rick will make that happen. If and when that happens, they will be able to score with anybody, which will put a lot of pressure on the other teams to keep up.’’
Good luck! Out of their top nine rotation players, only veteran Shawn Marion and newcomer Samuel Dalembert have any interests on that end of the court. That’s normally a recipe for disaster, which is why the Mavericks only will likely be slightly improved from last season. That team never seriously challenged for a playoff spot and finished in 10th place in the Western Conference with a break-even record (41-41). That team had to get hot in the last month of the regular season just to get to the .500 level.
Most of the so-called experts have the Mavericks pegged in a battle for the last playoff spot in the western conference. That’s mainly due to the fact that once again, six of their top nine rotation players are newcomers to this season’s roster. So, other than defense, developing chemistry could be the other major issue with this team. “We feel good right now about our chemistry at this point, Carlisle said. “It takes time to develop. It’s not something that happens overnight. It’s about building a trust with the players and the coaching staff. That’s something that can’t be forced or rushed, you have to be patient.
“This team should be better for a couple of reasons,’’ said former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. “They will have a healthy Dirk (Nowitzki) for a full season at the top of his game. And they also will have more consistent point-guard play from (Jose) Calderon.
“It’s all about understanding your role and what is expected of you. That’s what chemistry is all about even if you’re a veteran team, or a young, inexperienced team. We have a good, solid group of veterans who just want to fight for the same cause with the same goal in mind, which is to win a
BY: ROGER B. BROWN | championship. We know what it takes and what lies ahead on this journey. We’re hungry to get better and to keep improving all the time. So far, they’ve done everything that we’ve asked of them. If that keeps up, we’ll see what the results will bring.’’ It’s not a good sign when your three best players are in their 30s (Nowitzki, Marion and Vince Carter). That normally is a sure sign of mediocrity making a long stay, and not just a visit around the franchise. “This season is better than last year from the simple point that you don’t have so many guys on one-year contracts (the Mavericks had nine players on one-year deals last season), said former Mavericks coach Gar Heard. “That leads to too much turmoil and uncertainty no matter how many veterans you have around because they are trying to secure a long-time deal. “There has to be a happy medium, which the Mavericks may have found this time around. You have to have that mixture and flexibility. Because they still have some room for the next go round of free agents next summer to be a player.’’ The championship window appears to have closed on the Mavericks. The road to relevance is what they are embarking on now. And with Nowitzki in the last year of his contract, the future still could be sketchy at best.

The bible writers always refer to the Deity of God as one who knows, feels, loves, hears, and speaks. He is a personality distinct from the person and things which he has created. He acts intelligently; as in John 4:24 God referred to as spirit and Jeremiah 10:10, he is referred to as the living God. I feel comfort saying that his reality is spiritual and is not affected by time, place, and human frailties. “Wow!” What a person to have in the prayer closet with us!”

Proof of residence, such as a driver’s license or water bill is required. No business waste will be accepted. Residents can drop off up to five boxes of documents, weighing a maximum of 40 pounds per box. Waste Management will issue a “certificate of destruction” for the paper and will recycle the shredded remains. Bridgestone Firestone will collect up to four passenger tires per household. resident Barack Obama was elected to the highest office held by a man in the United States. But after the majority of the United States population voted him as the best choice to lead us he gets no respect from some of the people who swore to uphold and govern themselves by the law. From the house speaker to the senate and the young man from Texas who calls himself the leader of the Republican Party, selective opponents there is constant attempts to undermine his leadership and presidency. For decades it has been said that you are to respect the position even if you differ in opinion with the one who holds the office. When I was a young man growing up in Odessa, Texas, a small West Texas oil town I wrote to the then President of the United States of American, John F Kennedy. Even then I knew that you should address the leader of our country as Mr. President when I wrote him in 1962. Why don’t our elected officials respect President Obama as one of the most powerful man in the world? Do we now live in a society that no longer holds respect of other as the norm and now feel that it is acceptable behavior to disre-
spect anyone we disagree with? As adults how do we teach our children to respect if we show other no respect. Could it be just because he is a Black Man and they have no intention to follow his leadership no matter what it cost Americans today. To show that you mean well you have to learn to respect the other person put in place to lead and follow instructions no matter how much you disagree with the person in charge. American has gotten to the point that we let people do and say anything about our President and they get away with it. At some point somebody has got to stand up and be a man or a woman for what is right.

BLACK FACT – SHIRLEY CHISHOLM
S
hirley Chisholm was a US representative and social activist who was born Shirley St. Hill on November 30, 1924 in New York City. In 1969, Shirley Chisholm became the first black congresswoman and began the first of seven terms. After initially being assigned to the House Forestry Committee, she shocked many by demanding reassignment. She was placed on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, eventually graduating to the Education and Labor Committee. She became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969. Chisholm became the first African American woman to make a bid to be President of the United States when she ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. A champion of minority education and employment opportunities throughout her tenure in Congress, Chisholm was also a vocal opponent of the draft. After leaving Congress in 1983, she taught at Mount Holyoke College and was popular on the lecture circuit.

Those Preaching Giants that led us to Christ
H
ow can we ever forget those, who taught us the way of Salvation? Preachers like, Dr. C.A.W. Clark whose sermons and teaching are being taught at SMU. Preachers like, Dr. C.B.T. Smith walking over the pulpit preaching and saying (Lord Help Me to Preach Your Word) and singing; Rev. A. R. Griggs and Rev. Maynard Jackson, who founded the Ministerial Alliance of Dallas. How shall we forget Bishop, E. M. Page the one who introduced the Church of God in Christ to Dallas and the others who would follow him, like Elder Calloway, Bishop Frank Smith Sr., and Elder F. N. Haynes. Haynes Chapel still stands and 1st Pentecostal – Pages Temple Still Stands yet moved from its Historic Location. How can one forget the legacy left behind by Apostle Lobias Murray? He was a man before his time. Ridiculed for his strict religious
beliefs, but became, a Spiritual Advisor and National Icon for his unfailing faith and love of his Savior Jesus the Christ. Even though Black Priest were few and far between we must remember the days when priest were priest and were looked up to like Father John Thomas – Father Joseph A. Francis and to think that there original Catholic Parish is still standing St. Peters over there on Woodall Rogers Freeway which was once a part of the State Thomas Historic District. Finally, we give tribute to a Slave that accomplished much, Bro. Ambrose Tarver who is considered to be one of the founders of the Church of Christ. Thanks be to God we have found his abandoned grave her in Dallas Texas. Don’t Forget the Bridge that Crossed you over………. African American Historic Preservation League

WHO IS YOUR SHEPARD?
Psalms 23:1-6 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Today is a day of grieving. I understand that. We grieve because we hurt. Death has hit home. It has touched a loved one and we hurt. God made us so that we can have relationships with one another and when that relationship is lost because of death we hurt. When that relationship is lost we feel pain. When that relationship is lost we grieve. I would not say everything is all right because it is not. You hurt and we acknowledge that fact. You will hurt for a long time because everyone who has lost a family member or a close friend hurts for quite a while. And so I say to you grieve. Grieve long and grieve deeply. Do not run from it. Do not treat your grief as if it were a stranger you can send away or deny. Grieve what is lost. Grieve honestly. Grieve lovingly. Grieve patiently, until the cup is emptied. There is no other way back to wholeness but by facing our grief.
Yet, if you would allow me I would like to speak a word of comfort today. It comes from the 23 Psalm. It is found in verse four. Let me read that verse again. Psalms 23:4 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Amen! You may not know this but in Israel there is a real Valley of the Shadow of Death. It’s deep. It’s steep. It’s a very narrow canyon. The sun only hits the floor of the valley at high noon. The rest of the time the valley is dark. I want to give you three quick facts about the valley of the shadow of death. 1. The valley of death is unavoidable. The valley of death is going to happen you can count on it. The Bible tells us. Hebrews 9:27 says, “People die once, and after that they are judged.” The Bible makes it plain that it is appointed for all people to die we do not live forever in this world. Death is a fact of our existence no matter how much we struggle against this fact; it is unavoidable. Fact number two is: 2. The valley of death is unpredictable. You cannot plan your time of death it just does not work that way. The average Black male in America now lives to the age of 70. The average Black female in America now lives to the age of 79. VETERANS DAY, A TIME TO THANK THOSE WHO SERVE

onday, Novem b e r 11th, marks the official federal holiday honoring people who have served in the armed services. At or around the same time, Britain, France, Australia and Canada commemorate the veterans of World War I and II. Canada has Remembrance Day, Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). In Europe, Britain and the Commonwealth countries observe with two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. th every November 11 .
World War I was known at the time as “The Great War” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. But fighting had ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the AIlied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour on November 11th, 1918. On that day, President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed November 11 as the commemoration of Armistice Day saying “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the hero of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” Remember not to confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans and Memorial Day remembers the men and women who died while serving. The original observance was for a day of celebration with parades and public meeting and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. On June 4, 1926, Congress passed a concurrent resolution recognizing the end of World War

I and making November 11th a legal holiday. Later on May 13, 1938, it became a legal holiday to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and therefore celebrated and known as “Armistice Day”. The “Day” was primarily to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938, from “Armistice” to “Veterans”. On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor all American veterans of all wars. The Veterans Day National Ceremony is th held each year on November 11 at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The ceremony starts at exactly 11:00 a.m., with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknows. This tradition began on November 11, 1921, when an unidentified American soldier killed in the war was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The observance and an official celebration inside the Memorial Amphitheater. Other changes of the law have taken place over many years and presidents. However, Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11th without regard to what day it falls on. Casualties of some of the major wars throughout history include: The American Civil War, 1861-1865; 625,000 killed: WWI, 4,355,000 mobilized, 116,516 killed, 204,002 wounded: World War II 1941-1945, 405,399, killed, Korean War 1950-1954: total killed, 36,516; 92,134 wounded: Vietnam War: 1955-1975; Total killed, 58,209; 153,303 wounded: Gulf War; 1990-1991, 249 total killed, 849, wounded: Iraq War, 2003-2011; Total killed 4,488, 32,222 wounded; War on Terror: Afghanistan and Iraq Wars , 2001-Present, Total killed, 6,710, 50,897 wounded. Many celebrations will take place on November 11, 2013. Tell and show a veteran how much you appreciate the service and sacrifice them and their families have given to our country.

r. Pedra Jacobs is a woman of whom words cannot define. She has overcome tremendous adversities during the course of her life. Raised in the East Dallas Projects, she became heavily involved in the activities of her surroundings - from dealing drugs to armed robbery, gang relations and a host of criminal behaviors. At the age of 15 Pedra developed a strong drug addiction to PCP, and by the age of 16 she was pregnant with her first child. After racking up a string of over 30 felony charges and convictions, Pedra found herself doing time in prison.
After her return home from prison she was still struggling with PCP addiction. She would often times attend church services while under the influence. She would eventually meet Bishop Eli Jacobs who is now her husband. Throughout the course of their relationship Bishop was there to help her through her drug addiction and minister into her life. This would be the beginning of a dynamic ministry partnership. As the pieces of her life began to fall back together she started attending college. With a GED obtained while in prison, Pedra Jacobs set out on an educational journey that would astound the highest of intellectuals. She has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a

Master’s Degree in Human Service Counseling. She also holds a Doctorate in Divinity and is working towards a Doctorate in Psychology. Facing odds that would handicap the life of so many, Dr. Pedra Jacobs has scratched and fought her way into the top tiers of education. Her tenacity and zealousness to overcome the adversities of her past have proven also to be the foothold and drive behind her powerhouse ministry. When Dr. Pedra Jacobs speaks, people listen. was watching a sports show this week and one of the host mentioned that Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers has an injured collar bone. The host of the show went on to say that Rodgers could be out for at least three weeks. The host went on to say how important it is to the success Green Bay Packers. The host said it's very important to the success of the Green Bay Packers because Aaron Rodgers is the best Quarterback in the NFL.
Rodgers is the NFL's all-time career leader in passage rating during the regular season with a rating of 103.6. Rodgers is currently the only quarterback to have a career passer rating of over 100.0 in the regular season. Let's just say "Aaron Rodgers is the best Quarterback in the NFL"!!!!
