{ OUR WORDS } SUPPORT THE NAACP

BOSTON IN SEVEN

{ FOUNDING THOUGHTS }

BY DEBBIE BLAIR ABRON | PUBLISHER

I

am a big fan of David Ortiz. The left handed home run king is one of the principal reasons that I believe that Boston will win the World Series and Big Pappy, as Ortiz is known will be the hero of the day. You can count on him to come through in the clutch. Now don't get me wrong, St. Louis has one hell of a team. But they do not have the hitting arsenal of Boston that led the lead in hitting this year. They are stacked form batter one to batter nine. And they will put on quite a hitting show. Pitching has always been the secret weapons of strong teams and not many teams have ever had the arms that Detroit had this year, but Boston took care of Detroit and all of their arms. They treated them badly during the playoff series. St. Louis does not have half the pitching that Detroit has and I believe that they will know will get knocked all around the ballpark. That is simply what is going to happen. Yes, it will go seven games, but that how the money is made, but in the end the winner will be Boston and David Ortiz will be king once again.

T

he Texas State Chapter of the NAACP recently held its annual convention in Dallas. Members of the organization from throughout the state convened for three days to hold seminars and discuss strategies abut how to improve the conditions in Texas for racial minorities and women. State President Gary Bledsoe spoke about voter suppression tactics being used in the state of Texas by those who want to dilute the voting power of racial minorities, students and seniors. For instance, under the new Texas law, you can use a gun license to vote but you cannot use a student I.D. As President Bledsoe said, that is incredulous and is simply nothing more than an attempt to keep down the votes of progressive and forward thinking people in Texas. Students voted overwhelmingly for Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections and there are forces that do not want to see that happen again. Another highlight of the Convention was the appearance of former Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown who addressed those in attendance and signed copies of his book, "Policing in the 21st Century: Community Policy. Mayor Brown, who started the concept in Houston, talked about he necessity to have Community Policing in our cities and neighborhoods where police are viewed as problem solves and not the cause of problems.

T

o many there was no surprise when the news announced the cancelling of KwanzaaFest this year. Yes, we all read the challenges that are still in front of the organizer and many have read the published letter announcing the cancelling of this year’s event. But, the real loser here is not the organizer nor those associated with him, it is the community that will lose the benefits KwanzaaFest has brought the community the event was held in. Started as a cultural event KwanzaaFest morphed into one of the largest health care screening opportunities for those who historically go without regular medical care. In a community plagued with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, prostrate and colon cancer some are losing the one time they will get to see a healthcare professional. The simple test can save provide some with the only early detection opportunities they will have and or educate those that need the services the most. While County Commissioner John Wiley Price sits under a federal investigation he contends that the cost to produce the event with the decline in sponsorship as the reason for the cancellation. KwanzaaFest started as an event to remind the African American community of our heritage that is steep in rich history. To remind us of the richness we brought to the country. To show us that we have value that we need to

continue to produce the things that show our strengths. With each year the obvious need for screening and educating our community on health related issues became a major focus and major need that the event provided. While the KwanzaaFest organizers vow to come back in 2014 and the challenges still to be overcome with Obamacare there is still the need to provide the community that has little to no health care facilities and local medical practitioners with a service. There are still those within the community that need to be screened and then educated with options on how to treat and care for themselves. There are those from every age group that will lose this year without the healthcare screening and with a community that has little to no medical facilities this is another major blow to a challenged community.

$500,000 IN ADDITIONAL BUDGET CUTS HIT URBAN LEAGUE AGAIN

T

he Urban League of Greater Dallas will serve fewer clients under the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) due to a $500,000 cut in the budget for 2013 and 2014. "This massive cut in next year's budget will result in reductions in staff as well as limiting supportive services to clients," said Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, President and CEO. "This means we will serve several thousand fewer people through next year." This is just one set back the League is facing. The shutdown in the government has also caused the League's reimbursement to be delayed which affects all agency programs and services which now comes on top of the sequester effect. "This comes at a time when we are trying to maintain core services and build for the future with the Industry Training Center," said Dr. Mitchell-Brook Additionally, the League's ability to provide continuous free services will be impacted, particularly rent, mortgage and utility assistance, employment services and the amount of

financial support will be reduced. Traditionally, the agency's CSBG program has provided assistance to clients who receive other support. But, with the deep cuts proposed to the SNAP (Food Stamps) and Head Start Programs, people at or below 125% of the poverty guidelines are left with severely limited options in order to maintain a stable home environment. This safety net, that the nearly 450,000 Dallas residents who are poor depend on to help them maintain and retain basic living conditions, is greatly affected. "It is hard for citizens to choose between feeding their children or paying their rent because they have lost one of two of their minimum wage jobs," said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks. "Most of the working poor must work two jobs in this current economy just to make ends meet." The Urban League and its centers in Dallas, Garland, Pleasant Grove and Irving served over 30,000 individuals and families last year by providing free programs and services including computer classes, case management, financial support, employment and housing assistance and services to Veterans.

P

rayer is not only a powerful weapon, but it is also a powerful connection between God and man. It keeps us in line with our Godly destiny. Moses, like many men, believed in prayer in the days of his youth, but it remained for a great spiritual experience later in life, to give him power in prayer. This event in Moses’ life was meeting God in the burning bush. As a sinful man he realized his unfitness and took off his shoes, a sign of respect in that day and time. The conversation that took place next between God and Moses resulted in Moses return to Egypt, and the beginning of a chain of events which delivered the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage and brought them into Canaan which was to be their home for centuries. Out of his conversations with God came the successful strategies which Moses used to deal with the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Tiger Woods has gotten some negative press since The Master because of a drop during the final round this year, all over America everyone was down on Tiger after he took a improper drop, but Sunday evening we needed old Tiger to bail USA out after all of the good guys lost and we needed a helping hand from a Black player named Tiger Woods the only one on America team.

he Bible teaches us to not forget where we have come from. The Bible records: Teach your children and your children’s – children where the Lord thou God has brought thee from. The Lord has been good to us as a people and we should not forget. People across the years have given their lives for our freedom and our furtherance. They have closed their eyes in death but we should never forget their labor. Help me remember those people in the month of November. Help me say thank you to those who worked so hard that we might enjoy life as we do today. Every week we will feature another level or another area of special achievements of these Great Giants of History. How can we forget those preaching giants such as Dr. C. A. W. Clark who was truly a one of a kind, Dr. C. B. T. Smith that preaching and singing giant, Bishop E. M. Page who started the Church of God In Christ Movement in Dallas, Rev. L. Butler Nelson who fought to save the sacred burial grounds, what about Bro. Ambrose Tarver, one of the Church of Christ founders her in Dallas. There are numerous others just to name a few. Please submit to me others. How can we forget our civic leaders and elected officials who made sure that we treated equal in the city.

amily is an important part of both my life and my wife’s. We are blessed to still have both of our parents with us. As they age we are reminded that God’s favor is with us in this regard. God has given us what most only dream of having and we are truly blessed. This week my mother fell ill and is hospitalized. As most mothers, she is the cornerstone that the Blair family stands on. All family challenges seem unimportant when Moms are ill. My mother has the love in her that only compares to the love of God. Anyone who knows her knows that this testament to who Mozelle is, is true. Mom has always held us together and made sure we had all that we needed. As children, Mom nurtured us and as we grew, married, had children of our own and our children had children Mom has

given all of us the love that only cannot compare to any other. In return our spouses and our friends all adopted her as their own. Each of us has a special story to tell of how special she is. As we walk through the process of her having a stroke and the steps to recovery we ask that you continue to pray and support the Blair family. We know that in connection with her strength and the prayers of the righteous Mom can recover and continue standing tall. Now as you read the articles in this week paper remember that we all have the responsibility to do what we can to stay healthy and strong. Exercise and a good diet are keys to fighting the effects of hypertension which is one of the contributing factors of a stroke.

THE BLOOD IS THE POWER 27Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.28This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus has gathered his disciples together for the Last Supper. As these men gather around him, he holds up the cup and begins to explain that his blood is the New Covenant and that his blood is sufficient. Whereas the blood of goats and bulls for 4000 years has not met the requirements for the fulfilling of the law, his blood is sufficient. This is what He was talking about when he said, "That He had come to fulfill the law not do away with it." Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I have not come to destroy, but to fulfill. That He in one selfless loving act would do what no other sacrifice had been able to do and would begin a new covenant with the God of Creation. A blood covenant that if anyone would trust in the power of this blood, they would receive. REDEMPTION ATONEMENT HEALING PROTECTION DELIVERANCE STRENGTH TRANSFORMATION There is wonder working power in the precious blood of the Lamb of God, power to take away the sins of the world. I. His Blood Has the power to Redeem “Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed by the blood of the lamb. Redeemed, redeemed,

October 25 2013

His child forever I am.” Amen! Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” Amen! A. The law was hard; it was almost a curse upon mankind. No one could be pure enough, good enough, holy enough to obey the entire law. B. The law held men in bondage, and showed every imperfection in humanity. C. But the blood of Jesus freed us from the curse of sin and death. Romans 8:15 says, “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” D. The law had no completion; today a lamb, tomorrow a dove, next week a goat, the next a bull. It never stopped, constantly trying to cover the sins of a nation. The priest had to enter the Holy of Hollies once a year every year to sprinkle blood upon the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant to atone for the sins of the nation of Israel. 1Peter 1:18 says, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers. 1Peter 1:19 says, “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Amen! But one Cry from Jesus and God was no longer separated from man by a veil but as he cried out “It is finished” the veil was torn from top to bottom and now man could be redeemed by the New Covenant of The Blood of Jesus. And now man is no longer separated from the presence of God by this blood. If you would like the entire message please request it at revelations_75044@msn.com

COMPUTER GLITCHES SLOWDOWN OBAMACARE SIGN UPS

BY BARBARA MALLORY CARAWAY |

T

housands of American in search of affordable, accessible, quality healthcare found themselves at a loss as they attempted to sign up for healthcare coverage through the Marketplace exchanges. Problems with the computer program prevented people from filling out application and ultimately enrolling in a healthcare program. The many complaints by consumers and lawmakers forced President Obama to hold a press conference to address the problems in the roll out of the enrollment that started on October 1, 2013 and ends March 31, 2014. If a person signs up in the Marketplace by December 15, 2013, they can began coverage by January 1, 2014. If the uninsured have not obtained healthcare insurance by March 31, 2014 for them and or their family members, they will be fined $95 per adult and $47.50 per child up to a limit. That fee will increase annually. Additionally, you will not be able to purchase insurance in the Marketplace until the next open enrollment period and the fines will increase annually.

President Obama held a press conference in the Rose Garden earlier this week, flanked by people who have signed up for healthcare insurance Mr. Obama sought to assure the public that he shares their frustration with the online enrollment glitches that have prevented them from signing up and gave a phone number as another option to purchase healthcare. The number to call is 1-800-318-2596. The uninsured can also apply in person through “local navigators”, such as community health centers and hospitals. But you must go to LocalHelp.Healthcare.gov to find out where to go in your neighborhood. As the roll out continues, questions still remain as to how Obamacare works and who is eligible. All citizens of the U.S. must have healthcare. If you currently are insured your are ok whether its through an employer, selfinsured, cobra, Medicare, Medicaid, or any other form you are not impacted. If you are uninsured, about 15% of the population, you must obtain healthcare insurance unless you request and receive an exemption. You may qualify for an exemption 1. You’re uninsured for less than 3 months of the year, 2. The lowest-priced coverage available to you would cost more than 8% of your household income. 3. You don’t have to file a tax return because your income is too low, 4. You’re a

www.dfwelitenews.com

member of a federally recognized tribe or have services, 5. You’re a member of a recognized health care sharing ministry, 6. You’re a member of a recognized religious sect with religious objections to insurance, including Security and Medicare, 7. You’re incarcerated, and awaiting the disposition of charges against you and 8. You’re not lawfully present in the U.S. Hardship exemptions that may affect your inability to purchase healthcare insurance include 1. Homelessness, 2.An eviction in the last 6 months or were facing eviction or foreclosure. 3. A shut-off notice from a utility company, 4. A victim of domestic violence, 4.Recent death of a close family member, 5.Damage to your property cause by a natural disaster, 6.Filed bankruptcy in the last 6 months, 7.Inability to pay medical expenses in the last 24 months, 8. Unexpected increases due to caring for an ill, disabled family member. 10. You will claim a child as a tax dependent who’s been denied coverage in Medicaid and another person is required by court order to give medical support to the child. 11. An eligibility appeals decision, 12. You were determined ineligible for Medicaid because you state didn’t eligibility for under the Affordable Care Act. Exemptions can be applied for when filling out 2014 federal tax return or through the Health Insurance Marketplace. I want to provide you with a recap of the levels of healthcare insurance you can purchase through the Healthcare Marketplace. Silver and Bronze plans provide for lower premiums but a higher share of cost for care. Gold and Platinum carry a high monthly premium and the lowest out of pocket cost. Most Marketplace coverage includes checkups, having a baby, emergency care, and prescription drugs, free preventive care and shots. Dental insurance for children must be available as part of your healthcare plan or as a free-standing plan. Healthcare providers do not have to offer adults dental insurance as part of their plan. Remember the lower the premium the higher the out-of-pocket cost when you need care. The higher the premium, the lower the out-of-pocket cost. Finally, The Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare is the law. Unless you seek and receive an exemption, you will have to purchase healthcare insurance or be penalized. Barbara Mallory Caraway served six years in the Texas House of Representative and eight years on the Dallas City Council.

GRAMBLING STATE MESS AROUND

I

t doesn’t matter which side you support, the controversy at Grambling State between the football team and the school administration was an embarrassment for all HBCU schools. It was like watching your dirty laundry (no pun intended) being talked about over and over, while getting trashed all over the country. And there appeared to be no middle ground in the controversy. You were either for the players taking a historic stance by refusing to play against Jackson State, or on the other side by thinking they went too far to prove a point. There are some who may subscribe to the Al Davis (the late Oakland Raiders’ owner) theory of ‘it doesn’t matter what is being said about you just as long as you’re being talked about.’ Grambling State was front and center of the entire sports world. As a matter of fact, the controversy even made it to world news programs. It seems, everybody had something to say about “the small, poor black school in rural Louisiana.” What it did for some was shed the light on the theories of how black folk go about handling their business. It’s no secret; HBCU schools have long been plagued by corrupt financial controversies throughout time. So, this was nothing new. It goes on all the time…far too often. I grew wearisome and tired of all the talking heads going on and on about the situation. I found myself trying to hash out the underlying themes or intent from some who couldn’t tell you the first thing about Grambling State, but nevertheless, still weighed

Page 10

in on the hot topic. Already embroiled in a horrendous season (0-8) and a historic losing streak (12 straight and 18 of the last 19), you had to wonder just how much more could this proud program take? This had to be the low point! Now, comes the latest, Jackson State is suing Grambling State for not showing up to play last week. And the SWAC is going to fine the school $20,000 for not playing the game. The hits just keep on coming. All of these things are just a part of the repercussions from the fallout of the boycott. “It’s a shame that it had to come to this,’’ said former Grambling State great Everson Walls. “We all suffer from this as Gramblingnites. It’s doesn’t look good. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get some answers. You have to go to the extreme. “Hopefully some good will come from this and the program will get back on track and move forward. We have to all pull together and protect the kids. The adults can’t keep acting like kids. It’s our responsibility to take care of them.’’ So, where does Grambling State go from here?

www.dfwelitenews.com

I think you start at the top with the president. Frank G. Pogue must go, along with athletic director Aaron James, the third AD in the last three years. It got personal between Pogue and former coach Doug Williams, who was fired after two games this season. As always in a power struggle, ego got in the way, and not the wellbeing of the program or the kids. Anytime that happens, there’s flawed leadership. We don’t have to get into all of the finger-pointing of who said what, or who did what. That’s what got this situation to this point. And we don’t need to hear about the ‘woe is me’ excuses that are being offered up by the current administration of state funds being slashed. That’s happening all over the country. This got personal between the president and the coach! Black folk have been dealing with budget cuts since the beginning of time. That’s second nature because we’ve always found a way to survive no matter the circumstance. It’s simply an excuse to fall back on because of the escalation of this situation.

here is always a lot of talk about who is the best college football player. We are all watching these high-powered offenses put up big numbers, but sometimes we get stuck on one guy and one position. Here are just a few players you might just want to keep your eyes opened for the rest of the season.

Marcus Mariota QB Oregon and James Winston QB Florida State and Johnny Manziel. Johnny Manziel fell in this week's ranking after his team lost at home to Auburn, but Johnny still had a shot at the Heisman.

here are two schools of thought in the Metroplex on sports. The all powerful media, the part that control the thought patterns of the unknowing sports fan, tells the people you need a football man to run a football team. The other faction says business man can run anything. I am of the opinion the second group is right. But they really don’t care how people feel about their opinion. The first school of thought, the one that controls the thought pattern of the unknowing are really concerned about how you feel, because they‘re not very smart themselves. The first group heard somebody tell you that a football team needs a football man to run it. The second group tells you, you don’t need a baseball man to run a baseball team. The Texas Rangers is trying to get Nolan Ryan out of here quick

Manziel is No.2 in the nation in total offense, averaging 396.4 yards per game. James Winston made a big time name for himself and pushed his name to the top of the Heisman list after leading his team to a 51-14 win over Clemson. The redshirt freshman is No. 2 nationally with a QBR of 210.4. Oregon's Marcus Mariota has been lights out all season accounting for more than 2,500 yards of offense at a rate of 10.34 yards per play. Mar iota has 19 passing TDs and 9 rushing TDs and 0 interceptions. If Oregon can keep winning it's going to be hard to keep the Heisman out of this kid’s hand. The Quarterbacks are doing it, but there are a couple of receivers who are just dominating the college ranks. Texas A&M's receiver Mike Evans is the most physically dominant receiver in the nation this year. Evans is averaging 23.8 yards per reception. Evans is a big guy standing 6'5" and weighing 225 pounds, Evans has been uncoverable this season. Evans is just one of two receivers

to have over 1,000 yards receiving already this year. The other receiver is Brandin Cooks of Oregon State. Cooks is producing at a rate that could allow him to pass the 2,000 yard mark. If Cooks can maintain his average of 168 yards per game 2,000 yards is very doable. The Running back spot is no joke either. Arizona's Ka'Deem Carey ran for 236 yards and he has gained at least 125 in every game so far this year. Western Kentucky's Antonio Andrews has averaged 148 yards per Game and he has scored 10 TDs. Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin is averaging 144.6 yards per game and he has scored 11 TDs. Sure there are a lot of players who's are have good game and some of these players are putting together some good seasons. But just keep your eyes open for these guys, they are going to finish strong and they are going to rewrite the record books while doing it!!!! Thanks for Reading!!!

as possible; I’m definitely with that group. Let’s do a little research, how many media people run radio station? How many construction workers own or run large construction company. There are a few athletes that own athletic teams but it’s not the athletic ability that got them in position to own a team; it was their ability to develop in to good businessmen that allowed them to make the money to own a team. Roger Staubach, has made more money outside of his profession than any other athlete. Do you think it was because he could throw a deep out, or was it because he develop a great business sense? Vince Lombardy was a football man. The football man in him wouldn’t allow him to cut those guys he had won Championships with, so he quit. Had he been a business man he would have cut those guys, stayed in Green Bay and they probably would have changed the name of the stadium for him instead of a street. Tom Landry, could be one of the greatest and most innovative football mind of our time, his Legacy was damaged greatly because he didn’t have the heart to cut some of the guys he won with Randy White types, the first thing Jimmie Johnson did when he got here was let those guys go.

Whenever you‘re dealing with money, the business man is always the right way. Most people think Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever lived; I’m not one of them. How do you think he stacks up in the business world, would you let him put your basketball team together? Motown was probably as successful a company in black music as there ever been. How many songs did Barry Gordie sang? Jimmie Johnson is credited with 2 Super Bowls that was a business decision to trade Hershel Walker that was not a football decision that means, Jerry made or allowed Jimmie to make. Jimmie has never had that opportunity again and has never won another Super Bowl, Jerry won in 95. I don’t want to hear that was Jimmie’s team. Jimmie Quit! COVER STORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 So, as we continue to move forward, I think this could be a seminal moment in all of college sports. And it could lead to other things coming into play such as pay for play for student-athletes, as well as stipends and many other conditions. There already is a lawsuit being heard on former players suing the NCAA over their “likeness’’ rights in the EA sports games. ”This (the Grambling State boycott) could be just the tip of the iceberg,’’ said Mike Wilbon of ESPN. “There are so many other things out there that are about to burst this thing wide open as we know it now. I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but a shakeup in how college sports goes about its business is definitely about to take place. And wouldn’t it be ironic that the charge is led by a small black school in Louisiana. “Heck, you already see (the changes) with all of the conference shakeups going on. It’s all about the mighty dollar for colleges. Next up on the agenda is how to take care of the one thing that makes all of this work _ the players. ‘’ Things are back to normal (whatever that is) this week for Grambling State. It’s homecoming week, and the Tigers will play host to Texas Southern on Saturday. With all of the attention from last week’s boycott, one wonders if this week’s game will be an afterthought.

{ ENTERTAINMENT } { ROLLIN’ WITH A BROTHA }

BY: KEVAN BROWNING|

Welcome to the weekend, baaaby!

T

here are only 4 things I've planned this weekend...I am joining Tom Joyner's "Take Your Loved One To The Doctor" Day, today(10/25) by taking a relative for a flu shot.... Saturday Night is gonna be, whoop, whoop, whoop, Sooo much fun! The 13th Annual Cowboys Of Color Rodeo, lights up Mesquite Arena, 7:30pm. This is truly a family affair as well as a change of pace "date night" for you and your sweet special someone... Yes, Sir!!! Link up and see what the "Cowboys of Color" (www.cowboysofcolorrodeo.net) are really all about! Then there's Church at Bibleway Community Baptist (http://www.biblewayirving.org/) Church... It's "Tail Gate Sunday" and "BYOG"(Bring Your Own Grill), as we fellowship with food, flag football and family. Then there's The Cowboys /Lions game on Sunday. Big ups to the Boyz. You can do it! Congratulations to Kanye West on his engagement to Kim Kardashian... The controversial, futuristic, talented and sometimes silly Rapper/Actor put a ring on it earlier this week! A 15 Carat Lorraine Schwartz Diamond...as fireworks exploded‌ and a 50 piece orchestra jammed... Well done, Mr. West! My advice after 23 years is once you "put the ring on it", keep it there.

That's a lesson that many men and women struggle with... Somehow former NBA star Stephon Marbury worked out his own scenario, keeping wife Latasha of TV's "Basketball Wives" and paying off, or almost paying off his ex-mistress to keep quiet! Marbury made a deal with his #2 in 2006 to keep quiet for a little over $900,000. Well she took him to court and was awarded the remaining $300,000 this week...Sista's R serious, my brotha's... Take Rhianna, she's still mad at Chris Brown. A British paper reports Rhianna burned all the letters and presents that Brown gave her before they broke up, in a biiiigg bonfire... So WENDY, lol, How U Doin, lol!

Happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week: Judge Judy 71, Bootsy Collins 61, James Pickens Jr. 58,Dianne Reeves 56, Martin Luther King III is 55, Michael Boatman 48, Shaggy 45, Snoop Lion/Dogg 42, Craig Robinson 41, Kim Kardashian 33, Monica 32 and Ciara ! Thanks for "Rollin With A Brotha On Twitter@SmokinKevan, online at www.dfwelitenews.com and in The Elite News!
