Washington gone Mad

t appears as if the entire Republican Party has lost its mind. They are holding up the business of the nation because they cannot get their way. The remind me of little children who want to take away their ball during a game because they not set the rules. It is really silly. People across the country are hurting while this is taking place and the Republicans in Congress do not seem to care. They will pay a heavy price during the next election. People are going to vote against them and they don't seem to care. What is taking place in Washington is not about government, it is about President Obama and the face that a man of color and his family is occupying the White House. Those who oppose him know it and the American people know it too. It is a damn shame. I thought we had gotten pass all of this. Fortunately, the majority of the people in this country understand what is taking place and they will not be fooled by a bunch of idiots who are lying to them. The Congressional elections are right around the corner and the party with the Elephant is going to pay a heavy price. They must understand that government is not a circus!

he recent decision to retain Dallas superintendent Mike Miles was a wise one, I believe. Yes, everything did not go smoothly during the first part of his tenure, but he did promise to "reset" his relationship with the school board and perhaps he should be given a chance. The school board has the power to replace him if they so choose, but I think the decision that was made was in the best interests of the children. Give them a chance to be educated without disruptions taking place every time they look around. The school board knew what they were getting when they hired Mike Miles. He is a former military officer who is accustomed to giving hard orders. Perhaps Mr. Miles did not know what he was getting into when he took the job, but I am certain that now he does. After all, Mr. Miles and members of the school board are all adults and they can forgive one another for things that took place in the past. Even in a marriage sometimes things are said that one spouse did not intend to say, so they apologize and get on with it. That is what Mr. Miles and members of the school board need to do. They need to apologize and get on with it. That is best for them and best for the children they are sworn to serve.

KIRK, CHAMPION OF CIVIL RIGHTS IN AUSTIN, DIES AT 92 illie Mae Kirk spoke at the library dedication ceremony for the newly renamed Willie Mae Kirk Branch in 2012. Willie Mae Kirk, a civil rights leader and teacher who fought against segregation in Austin, died Saturday at age 92, her family said. A teacher for 32 years, Kirk championed equal opportunities for her students in East Austin and helped lead protests against segregation at Austin businesses, schools and Barton Springs Pool. Kirk played an important role in Austin politics over the past five decades, beginning with efforts to repeal the poll tax and register African Americans to vote. Even late in life, she continued to speak out about how minorities were treated in Austin, particularly in the wake of police shootings. The youngest of her four children, Ron Kirk, was elected Dallas mayor, ran for U.S. Senate and was later appointed the U.S. Trade Representative by President Barack Obama. Wilhelmina Delco, a former legislator and the first African-American elected official in Travis County, said Kirk understood that active engagement in politics was key to

W

ending discrimination. “That’s where we thought things had to change,” Delco said. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, said Kirk helped him launch his political career with the 1972 race for Texas Senate and continued offering advice through last year. “Through the 40 years that I have been honored to know her, and before, her strength as a teacher and a leader for equal opportunity has made this a stronger and more just community,” Doggett said in a statement. “And through the example she set for her children, her reach has extended around the world.” Last year, the city renamed an East Austin library in her honor. “My first priority is my students, ” Kirk said at the time. “Kids need to have a place where they can get any of the knowledge they need.” Raised in Manor, Kirk attended college in Austin at what is now Huston-Tillotson University, where she met her future husband, Lee Kirk. He became the first AfricanAmerican postal clerk in Austin and died in 1982. Willie Mae Kirk, known as Ankie to her friends and

family, suffered a major stroke after undergoing a heart procedure earlier this week. She died Saturday after several days in hospice care.

By: rev. clarence henderson o you live in an atmosphere of prayer? What a blessed privilege it is for God to give the believer the wisdom to create an atmosphere of prayer. The secret to that creativity is to be consistent and sincere, especially in prayer. Solomon, in the 3rd chapter of Ecclesiastics, list a lot of time that has its season; but he didn’t include prayer as a time to start and cease. However, Jesus said to us, that men ought to always pray and not faint. Consistent prayer will create a praying atmosphere. Acts 3:1 tells us that Peter and John went up together at the hour of prayer. If we follow the event, we will see clearly that consistent prayer brings about healing and

{ NATIONAL REVIEW }

Protecting our sacred heritage

luPus: the silent War

By rev. a. ray Barnett, Phd | he African American – Church has been the nucleus of the community for ever in history. History records it was either, the Colored Methodist First and Third Sunday and the Colored Baptist Second and Fourth Sundays and combined on the Fifth Sunday. So therefore, There Is A Need To Protect Our Sacred Heritage. It is disturbing to me that when I look at the Texas Historic Commissions and the National Trust Historic Preservation List of Designated Properties our Sacred History is not listed there. It is now time that we move forward and that we make the necessary steps to get our Churches Designated and Protected from Demolition and Upcoming Development. The African American Historic Preservation League was created in 2003 just to aid in the protection and the designation of our Rich Cultural Sacred Heritage. In 1998 the Dallas County Historical Church And Cemetery Association was formed protecting all Churches and all Cemeteries of every race – creed – color, but in doing so I found a desperate need to focus my attention on my African American Sacred Heritage. So I Prayed about it and Found the African American Historic Preservation League just to give you a little history of the

T

organization. I don’t turn anyone away, but my new focus is on my own Sacred Heritage. Your continual support is appreciated. There is a need to protect our Sacred Heritage. There are three things that we do in order to bring this needed action into fruition . 1. We must first create a list of those known Historical Churches, 2. Secondly, we must document and gather the historical data of proof, 3, Thirdly and finally , we must start the designation procedures through the State of Texas. Through this process we can create a directory which will further the awareness and bring further recognition to our Sacred Heritage. I need your support in my designation and preservation procedures and in the creation of the First African American Historic Church Directory. If you have any information, or need more information, or can be support please call me at (214) 5659026 Ext. 335 and make plans now to attend the Annual African American Historic Church Conference – Saturday, October26,2013 at the African American Museum in Historic Fair Park. Your brother through Calvarys’ Ties, Rev. A. Ray Barnett, Rev. A. Ray Barnett, PhD.

By: congressWoMan eddie Bernice Johnson | ach day approximately 1.5 million Americans engage in a battle with their own bodies due to Lupus. Often times this internal conflict is unknown to their families and friends. Even though the disease can strike men and women of all ages, 90 percent of its victims are female. What is even more alarming is that it affects minority women two to three times as much as white women.

E

A recent survey revealed that nearly threefourths of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 have never heard of this disease, and ironically those who fall in that age bracket are at the highest risk. We must build awareness about this chronic condition and simultaneously work to increase funding for research to improve the diagnosis of this disease that disproportionally affects minorities and women in the prime of their lives. The disease is Lupus-- an unpredictable and misunderstood disease in which the immune system is out of balance, causing damage to any organ system in the body. Lupus can affect any or all organs in the body including the skin, lungs, heart, joints, kidneys, and brain. Common symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, overwhelming fatigue and fevers that last for days or weeks. Currently, there is no procedure that determines whether or not a patient has lupus, and the disease often imitates other illnesses making it challenging to diagnose. On average, it takes a person with lupus three to four years and three doctors to receive an accurate diagnosis. Researchers

www.dfwelitenews.com

have yet to discover the cause of Lupus and while it does appear in certain families, no gene or gene group has been proven to cause this debilitating disease. Treatment for lupus can be very expensive because of its multifaceted nature. Annually, lupus costs our nation about $31.4 billion. The annual cost for treatment for an individual with lupus is an estimated $20,000. The cost to treat an individual with lupus nephritis, kidney inflammation caused by lupus, could be as high as $62,000 per year. Ultimately, extensive research is needed to better understand this disease and to discover effective treatments. But without sufficient funding, research into the cause of lupus and the discovery of new treatments will be delayed. Currently, there is only one FDA approved drug to treat Lupus, but due to the vastness of the disease one drug cannot treat every case. I am astutely aware of our current economic conditions, but we cannot afford to make drastic cuts to funding for agencies like the National Institutes of Health that conduct valuable research leading to cures for diseases like Lupus. I have recently joined the Congressional Lupus Caucus, established so that members of Congress can help increase awareness of Lupus and advance vital research. It is my hope that my colleagues and I can work together to find solutions to help facilitate scientific efforts to find a cure for this debilitating disease.

Joshua 23:10-11 "One man of you shall chase a thousand. For Jehovah your God is He who fights for you, as He has promised you. And take good heed to yourselves that you love Jehovah your

God" od can use you if you will let Him. Helen Keller said, “"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do." Amen! Often we are overwhelmed by a sense of personal insignificance. Often a person feels like an expendable commodity. We feel a sense of complete uselessness believing "I am just one--and what can just one do?" Understand God can use you if you will let Him. Helen Keller said, “"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do." Throughout Scripture, we find example after example of the power of one. One little Boy was instrumental in feeding 5000 John 6:9-13 says, "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?" Then Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise

G

of the fish, as much as they wanted. So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost." Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. Amen! God uses what you have to fill a need, which you never could have filled. God uses where you are to take you where you never could have gone. God uses what you can do to accomplish what you never could have done. God uses who you are to let you become who you never could have been." It is not based on one’s ability but one’s availability. God uses those who make themselves available to Him. He will use you, if you make yourself available to him. That is the key. Are you making yourself available to him? Isaiah 6:8 says, “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ’Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ’Here am I! Send me." Make yourself available to God to do anything He asks of you, seeking not the gifts, but the Giver. Amen! One little Girl was instrumental in healing a world military leader. 2nd Kings 5:1-3 says, “Now Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great and honorable man in the eyes of his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but a leper. And the Syrians had gone out on raids, and had brought back captive a young girl from the land of Israel. She waited on Naaman’s wife. Lancaster Welcomes Chief Cheryl Wilson

he City of Lancaster has made history with the announcement of appointing the first African American Chief of Police, Cheryl Wilson in the state of Texas. Yes, there are other women in the position of Chief of Police, Houston and the University of Texas in Arlington, UTA. Chief Elizabeth Herrmann Watson was appointed February 7, 1990 as Houston’s Chief of Police and Kim Lemaux was recently appointed as Chief of Police to UTA but Chief Wilson is the first and only African American female Chief of Police in this state. The city of Lancaster is in for a treat. Chief Wilson will serve and lead the protection of one of the largest black majority city in the state. As of the last census reports Lancaster has a 69% black population. When talking with Chief Wilson it does not take long to know

T

Page 10

that she is a lady on a mission. A mission to show those that look up to her and the community that she is serving that she will be leading with respect and fairness. It will not be surprising to see Chief Wilson out in the community getting to know the people and allowing them to know her. When asked what kind of approach she will use in managing she is proud to say she will have a “Hands On” approach; one that is predictable when it comes to customer service and community service. A leader by example with check and balances set in place to make sure there are predictable expectations for both those she is managing and the community she is in place to serve. To know Chief Wilson is to know that she is no

www.dfwelitenews.com

nonsense at work and at home. She is the oldest of 7 who has raised a 26 year old daughter and raising an 18 year old son. She is confident and competent in all that she sets out to do. Mediocrity is not a term she accepts from herself and not from others. When talking with her and getting to know her she shared that “when others are sleeping I am not. When others are eating I probably am not.” In a male dominated job she is one that others will need to look up to. One that will get the job done while standing firm and tall. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and her Masters of Arts in Professional Development from Dallas Baptist University she went on to attend the FBI National Academy and FBI Executive Fellowship Program. Chief Wilson served 13 years in the US Army National Guard before working with the Dallas County Sheriff where she was promoted to the ranks of Assistant Chief Deputy. The city of Lancaster will confirm Chief Cheryl Wilson officially at the October 28th City Council meeting.

{ THAT’S LEGAL } ALL DEMOCRATS AIN’T GOOD DEMOCRATS: THE JUDGE WHO TRIED TO PUT CRAIG WATKINS IN JAIL allas Judge Lena Levario has got to go. Remember the judge who told a county employee she wanted to serve District Attorney Craig Watkins up on a silver platter? That’s her – Lena Levario. Remember her name; because, it’s a shame that this Democratic judge lost her way so badly that it took a Republican judge to clear Mr. Watkins’ name. Let’s back up. First Judge Levario demanded to know why the Dallas County District Attorney’s office indicted a rich white man for mortgage fraud. What’s interesting is DA Watkins has never had to explain any of the thousands of indictments he seeks each year, but Judge Levario made an unprecedented move when she subpoenaed Mr. Watkins to the stand like a criminal and ordered him to explain his actions. Watkins’ prosecutors presented Levario with evidence of mortgage fraud to try to quash the matter, but Levario acted in what can be interpreted as a vengeful way and told DA Watkins he’d better answer the questions. Watkins told the judge he had a work product privilege and refused to answer questions. Judge Levario might as well have called him “boy”, but boy did she do the unthinkable – holding the District Attorney, the top lawyer in the county, in contempt of court where he faced jail time. So, DA Craig Watkins, the man known for freeing the

D

innocent, found himself in need of exoneration for a crime he did not commit. Now, let’s fast forward to Republican Judge Robert Brotherton of Wichita Falls, Texas who ironically saved the day. During a motion to dismiss the contempt charge, Judge Brotherton might as well have ruled that Judge Levario had lost her mind! Judge Brotherton said the facts and the law showed: 1. No hearing ever should have been held by Levario as to why DA Watkins indicted Al Hill III – a wealthy member of the Hunt family taMMy keMP 2. The subpoena Levario issued for DA Watkins to come testify was improper 3. DA Watkins did not waive his privilege by taking the witness stand

4. DA Watkins’ refusal to answer questions was not contemptuous 5. DA Watkins was found Not Guilty This was just plain embarrassing for Judge Lena Levario and begs the question…WHY? Why would Democratic Judge Levario hold an improper hearing and hold DA Watkins in contempt of court? She looked as if she was either ignorant of the law or blatantly biased. It appears Jill Reese, a former county employee who testified under oath that Levario said ‘Mr. Watkins would see the walls of a jail cell’ was telling the truth that this was a judge with a grudge. We thank Mrs. Reese for pulling Judge Lena Levario’s hood off, so we could see her true colors. That’s why we need to show ours and get out the black vote. Vote NO to Levario and YES to her opponent, Tammy Kemp, who is a long standing member of Concord Missionary Baptist Church. Kemp is OK in our book for judge. She has been a part of DA Watkins’ administration for six years and oversees the Family Violence and Child Abuse unit. She worked under both John Vance and Bill Hill. Tammy Kemp put away Naim Muhammad for drowning his two young sons. Kemp is the lady who worked out a deal with Dez Bryant when he and his mama had drama. Well, we are done with the drama with Judge Levario who tried to put DA Watkins in jail. Let’s put her in a time out – for Good!

800,000 Federal eMPloyees laid-oFF due to Washington, d.c.’s Melt doWn over oBaMacare By: BarBara Mallory caraWay | he U.S. Federal government furloughed nearly 800,000 non-essential employees starting October 1 for the first time in almost 17 years. No work, no pay. The shutdown came due to Congress’ inability to act on a budget or continuing resolution that would fund the government for the 2014 fiscal year. A continuing resolution allows congress to fund government agencies if a formal appropriations bill has not been signed into law by the end of the Congressional fiscal year. That year’s end was September 30. The House led by Republican Speaker John Boehner refuses to pass a budget that does not defund or delay implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. The majority of Democrats do not support this position. The Democratic controlled Senate led by Majority Leader Harry Reid passed a bill that would have kept the government running until November 15 but stripped the measure that would have delayed or defunded the healthcare provision. And since the two chambers could not agree on a spending bill by midnight September 30, non-essential departments closed down. President Obama had vowed to veto any legislation that would change Obamacare in its current form. But in reality the budget drama and the eventual government shutdown, had absolutely no impact of the funding or implementation of Obamacare. The open enrollment of the uninsured obtaining healthcare

insurance began on October 1 as scheduled. The military will continue operations under legislation signed by President Obama last week. Essential government employees that will not be affected by the shutdown include air traffic controllers, the Social Security Administration, U. S. Veterans Affairs and the United Postal Service. Some non-essential agencies that will be shutdown or operating on a shoe string budge will be National Parks, the Center for Disease Control Prevention, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Heath and Human Services, Energy, Homeland Security, HUD, IRS, EPA and many more. President Obama estimates that the Federal government shutdown will cost the already fragile U.S. economy 1Billion dollars a week. Speaking of Obamacare, on its official rollout day of October 1 millions of people searched the Internet to get more information on this mandated law. But still many more remain uninformed about it. Be reminded that Obamacare is the law of the land. Every man, woman and child who not currently covered through their employer, VA, Medicare, Medicaid, self-insured or who has not sought an exemption must obtain health insurance or be penalized.

www.dfwelitenews.com

The 2014 penalty is 95$ per adult and $47.50 per child 1% of your annual salary. The fee will increase every year. The open enrolment date in the Marketplace began on October 1 and will continue through March 31, 2014. If you enroll by December 15, 2013, your coverage will began on January 1, 2014. If you do not enroll by March 31, 2014, you will not be able to do so until the next enrollment period during calendar year unless they have what is referred to as “a qualifying life event”. If you do not have health insurance as mandated by law, you will still be responsible for 100% of your healthcare medical bills. The Marketplace offers insurance plans in four categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each plan requires a monthly premium and may require you to pay out-of-pocket for services for the services you receive. The level of care you choose will determine your premium cost and your out-of-pocket expenses. But what you pay should not determine the quality of healthcare you receive. Remember Obamacare is a requirement, not an option. And while Washington spirals in gridlock, voters must consider if the representative they elect in those positions are operating in their best interest or their own. To quote Albert Einstein, “the definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result.” Lets change Washington from the inside out.

{ BRINGS SPORTS } { TOLIVER’S TALENTS } By: Mark a. toliver ii | he NFL has really turned into a pass happy league in the pass few years. The running game has really taken a back seat to the passing game. In this years NFL the running back has to be able to run the ball, block for the quarterback, and he must be able to catch the ball out of the backfield. But the key to this years NFL is the passing attack. This years NFL season is all about the QB and man these player are not disappointing anybody. Here is my list of the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL 2013-14 Peyton Manning Denver: Manning has been playing flawless so far this season. In the first four games Manning has passed for 16 touchdowns and zero interceptions on 156 attempts. Manning is also completing 75 percents of his attempts. According to Pro Football Focus, Manning’s wide receivers, tight ends and running backs have dropped 14 of his passes. Manning has 16 Touchdowns passes, zero interception, and 1,470 yards and a 138.0 passer rating.

Drew Brees-New Orleans:

{ LOSERS LIMP } By: leon siMon | hen the Cowboys signed Deion Sanders, I think they sealed their fate forever. They won their fifth Super Bowl but they or owner Jerry Jones let a cancer into the locker room that’s still there. While working at KLIF, I attended every training camp and every practice, and I have yet to see Deion Sanders practice at training camp. He would ride around on what he called a $30,000 golf cart sometimes he would even have his kids riding with him. I think Deion thought he was too good to practice in front of Joe Q Public free. The Cowboys was coming off 2 back to back Super bowl wins. Prior to that season, Jimmie Johnson had a no non sense policy. Everybody practiced, “you can’t make the club in the tub.” Some of the Cowboys top players I’m sure didn’t like the fact that Deion coming in and didn’t have to face that 110 degree temp in pads, so they started riding around in practice, thus the beginning of the tub club. And it seems like it grows every year. Emmitt would ride around all camp then Larry Allen etc. As a result the Cowboy never got in the condition

W

Page 12

While Manning is receiving a lot of attention Drew Brees is still doing his thing. All Brees has done s throw for 1.4343 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions, while completing 67 percent of his passes. Brees put on a clinic on Monday Night against the Dolphins completing 30- of- 39 for 413 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Tom Brady -New England: Tom terrific is at it again. Brady worked through some major kinks in early September, but he has hit his stride. Brady has over 1,000 yards with 7 Touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Russell Wilson Seattle: Russell Wilson hasn't shredded the teams he has faced so far this season, but his leadership is far beyond his years. On Sunday down 20-3 at halftime, Wilson led a super comeback that included a 14-play, 75- yard touchdown drive that brought his team within one score in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks defense played super in the second half against the Texans, but Wilson's decision- making and elusiveness outside the pocket was huge in the victory. These are the QB's that are playing the best football so far this season. Let's just keep in mind it's only the first quarter of the season. Thanks for Reading!! May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World!! Mark A Toliver II that championship teams got in. The Philadelphia Eagle came into a blistering hot Texas Stadium, and put a good ole fashion whipping on the Cowboys, and made bigger fun at the Cowboys by saying they drank pickle juice to get ready for the heat. The Eagle practice in Pennsylvania the Cowboys in Wichita Falls, and they tell you it was pickle juice. There’s a big group of guys in the league that believes if you play hard for Jerry Jones he will pay. That’s a good thing. Jerry should make some changes to that, that reads if you don’t play hard Jerry will cut you. Jerry gets a relationship with these guys and there’s no limit to the things they can get away with. Just like Emmitt and Michael and the rest of the Boyz thought if Deion can ride cart all practice I can too. Well today’s team feels that if Matt Harrison Can ride the Injured reserve list for 2years, Jay Ratliff can go 2 years and not play there is no urgency on this team. If they can do without players for 2 years it’s not imperative that I go all out to make a tackle or catch a pass. Matt Harrison hasn’t played not one down of regular season football and he’s been on roster 2 years. General George Patton got a soldier out of the hospital and made him fight, what do you think he would do to Jay Ratliff, Miles Austin, these guys realize on pay day it’s professional football, but on Sunday they think it’s Be careful out there fellows.’I said last year if the Cowboys cut Felix Jones and Miles Austin that would scare the team into some type urgency. It’ll work this year cut Austin, Harrison and Ratliff.

{ RON WASHINGTON SHOULD BE REWARDED}

By: roger B. BroWn | or the first time in four years, the Rangers won’t be taking part in the American League playoffs. But don’t blame Rangers’ manager Ron Washington for that failure. As a matter of fact, this may well have been Wash’s best performance during his seven-year tenure as the Rangers’ boss. Considering what he had to work with and what he had to overcome this season, it was a remarkable feat that his team won more than 90 games, and forced a onegame playoff with the Tampa Bay Rays for the last wild card spot. Indeed. If there is any blame to go around for this season, it should start and end with general manager Jon Daniels. He did very little in the off-season despite losing three main cogs – Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and Mike Napoli – from the offense. And he did nothing to fortify a pitching staff that had no ace to start the season. “Considering what he had to work with before the season even started, I thought this team would be the second or third best team…in their own division (the American League West),’’ said Hall of Famer Joe Morgan. “They needed an ace, despite the fact that Yu Darvish was around. And they also needed a thumper in the middle of the lineup. They failed on both of those occasions, but somehow had the same expectations going into the season. “So, they never replaced any of the power that they lost. On top of that, they also lost the one big power bat they had in Nelson Cruz for the last 50 games. But they still somehow managed to win more than 90 games to force a one-game do-or-die situation against Tampa Bay. Needless to say, I think Ron did an outstanding job when you look at all of the factors.’’ The Rangers only got two starts from opening-day pitcher Matt Harrison. Colby Lewis, the projected No. 3 man in the pitching rotation, never threw a single pitch for the major league club. On top of that, the rest of the staff was besieged with injuries, which forced Wash to go along with three rookie pitchers in the rotation at times. “I never complain about what we don’t have,’’ Wash said. ”I just have to go out there and make it happen with the guys that are ready to go. Injuries are a part of the game, so there is no use complaining about them. We didn’t let that become an excuse for what we couldn’t do.” “You just have to make due with what you got. We just kept on fighting and battling no matter what the situation. As long as we took the right mental approach and the right attitude, we felt like we could keep things moving in a positive direction.’’ That he did. Even the moves that Daniels made at the trade deadline to bring in veteran pitcher Matt Garza and right fielder Alex Rios, proved to only be marginal at best.

haMilton Park BoBcats WelcoMes Prairie vieW a&M and graMBling state university here are two special events that took place in 1961 and both made history. On August 4, 1961, the first Black President of the United States, Barack Obama was born, and four months later on Dec 16, 1961, Hamilton Park High School captured the title as “Class A Division Texas State Champions”. In 1961, desegregation of public schools in Texas had not taken place and many Texas black high school sports programs including state football championships, were under UIL connections managed under the largest black college in Texas known at the time as Prairie View A&M College of Texas. Richardson Independent School District’s only African American school located in Dallas, Hamilton Park, grades 1 thru 12 was completed in 1955 and several of the faculty and staff were graduates of Prairie View A&M College which was later re-named Prairie View A&M University. A tight knit community of 750 homes where faculty and teachers not only taught at Hamilton Park School, but lived in the community as well. The former students of Hamilton Park understand what it means to be a” Bobcat”. Richard Bonner who played on the 1961 championship team as an inside linebacker for the Hamilton Park Bobcats and whose brother, Dr. Harold S. Bonner served as interim president of Prairie View A&M University, during the 90’s, recalls; “I was a sophomore in 1961, the previous year we made it all the way to the State Championship in 1960 and lost, but we came back in “61 and took the title.” Bonner remembers traveling to Sweeny, Texas with his teammates and defeating the Wildcats of Carver High School to win the state championship. The game trophy, known too many in Hamilton Park as the “Golden Football” is in scripted with the words; Prairie View A&M, Class A, State Champions, 1961. Bonner is shown in a recent photograph with the game trophy along side of the late Head Coach and former Principal of Hamilton Park School, Mr. James O. Griffin. For many, the history of Hamilton Park dates back to civil rights and education of African Americans across the country. The neighborhood streets of Hamilton Park

T

October 4, 2013

are named after famous African American actors, and places and serves as a reminder of those that paved the way for many blacks for a better quality of life and education. Such names as Ebony, Bellafonte Drive, Campanella Drive, and Bunche are all part of black history. The neighborhood post office named after the HP community leader and Prairie View graduate, the late Dr. Robert E. Price. Hamilton Park’s historic connection to black colleges is evident when entering the main entrance of the neighborhood and one of the first streets visible is Oberlin Drive. In 1844, Oberlin College graduated its first black student, George B. Vashon, who became one of the founding professors at Howard University [8] and the first black lawyer admitted to the Bar in New York State. Former Dallas Cowboy and a 1981 graduate of Grambling State University, Everson (Cubby) Walls, and Gwen Barrett Jackson, a 1981 graduate of Prairie View A&M University, both are former students of Hamilton Park School. Mrs. Jackson grew up on Dandridge Drive, named after actress Dorothy Dandridge, but Jackson nor Walls never got the chance to attend high school at Hamilton Park, and both remember how desegregation and busing forced the closure of their neighborhood high school to what is known now as Hamilton Park Pacesetters Magnet, grades K thru 6. “In the beginning I felt cheated, explained Jackson, I remember in grade school during football season, each homecoming the high school band, floats, convertible cars, homecoming queens, all participated in the homecoming parade, marching through the streets of Hamilton Park with the entire neighborhood cheering and watching. Once I got to Prairie View, it was then I realized, I don’t think I was cheated at all, the experience was only delayed, it felt as though I picked up where I left off, only at a much higher level.” Jackson is the third youngest of seven children, whose eldest brother was a member of the HP Bobcat Football team

{ DALLAS CONNECTION } ron continued FroM Page 12 Once again, there was no ‘wow’ move made. Despite that fact, the Rangers kept plugging along because their manager refused to let them give up on the season that sometimes appeared to be a lost cause. And now that it has concluded, Wash should be rewarded with a three-year extension. It’s absolutely incredible that Wash is entering the last year of his contract with the Rangers. During the season, Wash became the all-time winningest manager in franchise history. And let us not forget that he has taken them to two World Series. As a matter of fact, the Rangers had never even won a playoff series before Wash’s arrival. And in each of his first six seasons, they increased their victory total from the previous season, which was the first time that had occurred in MLB since the mid-70s. Meanwhile, just this week, other less successful managers such as Ron Gardenhire and Terry Collins have been awarded extensions. Despite three consecutive seasons of 95 of more losses, Gardenhire was given a

two-year extension by Minnesota, and Collins got two more years from the New York Mets despite not having a winning season there in three years. And on top of that, Wash is the second lowest-paid manager in Major League Baseball (Houston’s Bo Porter is at the bottom). Does this sound like a man who should be begging to keep his job? No way…no how! ”We battled and fought through the season,’’ Wash said. “We went out there and scratched and clawed for everything we got. We just came up a little short in the end. I’m proud of the way this team played baseball this season. I never gave up on them and I thought we had a chance to the end.’’ Now it’s time for the Rangers to do the right thing and give Wash a new deal so that he can continue to go about the task of one day bringing a championship team to Arlington. Maybe, Daniels can at least get that right after all of his other failures this season.

from 1960-61. A member of the Hamilton Park School Wide Reunion Committee, Ms. Jackson served as the first Scholarship Chair of the School Wide Reunion. The first scholarship of Hamilton Park was awarded to a student to attend Prairie View A&M University. As the years followed a scholarship was awarded for a student to attend Grambling State University and other universities were soon added”.
