he world is waiting to see what America is going to do about the use of chemical weapons in Syria. The President wanted to go ahead, but then ran into a bump in the road when the British Parliament voted against their country intervening in the war. The problem, according to most of the Brits, is that the major powers were wrong about Iraq and could be wrong about Syria. It is a concern that must be considered. Getting involved in conflicts thousands of miles away is not an easy thing. Politicians always say that War is necessary and the result is that thousands of young Americans die and get injured in places that some of them had never heard of or visited. I understand the concerns of the British and I think that the American government should be prudent before it decides to go into another conflict. American, with its dwindling resources, cannot afford to be the policemen of the world. We have severe problems here at home and perhaps we should do something about those problems. The fighting that has gone on in Syria is not something that I think that most American politicians really understand. The conflicts are rooted in tribal and ethnic conflicts. We really don’t know which side is which and we are not sure who will be in power once we throw our weight into the conflict. We have got to be prudent about what we do and we cannot afford to use a big stick in situations that perhaps we simply do not understand.

want to congratulate all of those that made the recent MegaFest such a wonderful event for our city. It was a wonderful event and people came from all over the country to share in the greatness that is Dallas. Our city has a chance to shine and shine it did. I also want to congratulate Bishop T.D. Jakes and Mrs. Jakes for their leadership. Imagine, 75,000 people coming to praise God and enjoy themselves at the same time. It took some major planning to put the event together. Also, I am pleased that Bishop Jakes said that Dallas was his “home” and that he was pleased that so many that live here could benefit from the event and gain knowledge from it. In years past, MegaFest was held in other cities such as Atlanta and Johannesburg. Many people who live in Dallas could not afford to travel to those cities and were unable to participate in the events. Now that it was held in Dallas, they were able to enjoy all of the events that make MegaFest one of the major events in the city of Dallas. I also want to thank the residents of Dallas who welcomed all of those who came to enjoy themselves and to participate in the event. The city officials were very kind to the organizers and worked well with those who planned the event. I hope that Dallas in the home of MegaFest for years to come and that people from across this country and around the world will come and experience the greatness that is Dallas, the warmth of its people and all that we have to offer!

By: geraldine hooker | ust imagine how positive it would make your day if you offered a gift to everyone with whom you came in contact. It wouldn’t have to be a material gift, but it could be. It could be the gift of your undivided attention, or a kind word, a smile, or perhaps a helping hand. It would be given freely and willingly, with genuine love and consideration, and with the expectation of nothing in return. The more you give of yourself, the more you’ll understand and appreciate how very much you have to give. Though most who receive your gifts will appreciate their sincerity, there will be those who won’t. But that doesn’t matter at all. What truly brings value to your life is the giving itself, undertaken with a sense of love and caring. Give, and your world improves dramatically with each gift. Continue to give, and the positive energy builds upon itself. Think about it, and you’ll see that you have plenty to give. If life seems dreary and pointless, try giving of yourself and you’ll quickly experience how truly beautiful and meaningful life can be.

ORGANIC GARDENING: TIME TO PLANT FALL VEGETABLES

Greetings: ast Saturday, I sent two hours at a workshop on Organic Gardening. My goal was to learn how to grow vegetables and fruits without using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The focus for everything I do has to agree with my natural lifestyle! Organic gardening supplies me with food to eat for nourishment and nutrition. When you eat plants, you get your multi-vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. After the class, I bought a pomegranate tree and some “Cool Weather Vegetables”. Fall vegetables to plant, during the months of September through November are: spinach, lettuce, beets, chives, kale, bok choy, cauliflower, cilantro, broccoli, greens, garlic, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, cabbage, peas, parsley, asparagus, radishes, carrots, green beans. Edible flower plants for the garden are: calendula and pansy. I’m no longer surprised that I’m the only African American in the organic edible gardening workshops that I enjoy attending. For me, eating from God’s good earth is the only way to keep our bodies healthy. Prevention is a more

L

practical lifestyle than trying to cure a disease. From the organic gardening workshop I learned new information that I have put into motion: 1) Composting is essential and is the basics of growing vegetables and fruit. It is food for the soil and provides important nutrients that the soil needs for healthy crop growth and increases insect pest resistance. Composting is making your own fertilizer instead of throwing away good organic material. It allows you to save money on expensive fertilizers. Texas soil is acidic and must be alkalized by composting. In past years, just the thought of putting left over food scrapes into a container made me nauseated. I have friends that compost and the smell is awful, there are piles of un-decomposed scraps, and flies are everywhere! Well, the speaker said, it doesn’t have to be that way. 2) Always add Nitrogen to vegetables, fruit trees, and herbs because they are deficient in it. The best nitrogen to use is Chicken Manure. Not fresh Chicken “Poop”, it has to be composted. Chicken Manure is a fertilizer and soil conditioner that also provides phosphorus and potassium. Used without composting, Chicken “Poop” could damage plant roots and possibly kill your plants. On Saturday, I purchased my first bag of Chicken ‘Poop’ and put some on all of my plants. I’ll let you know if my plants look healthier in a month.

3) Bone Meal Fertilizer is a protein for plants. 4) Rock Minerals is a mineral fertilizer for plants. Minerals include: calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, and iodine. To eat mineral-rich foods, you must eat foods grown in mineral-rich soil. Ninetyfive percent of all bodily functions rely upon minerals. Minerals have a direct connection to longevity, flexibility, and health in general. 5) Tomato-Tone Fertilizer has calcium. Tomato plants are huge calcium eaters. 6) Yum-Yum Mix is a Vegan Fertilizer. 7) Inoculate for Probiotics. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine defines probiotics as live bacteria, often called, “good bacteria,” that help the body. Clinical studies have shown that probiotics assist a number of conditions in which the body’s internal balance is disturbed. The benefits of probiotics help a number of conditions that involve the digestive system and the immune system. Inoculants are garden additives, that speed up the breakdown of organic matter, encourages root growth, improves soil conditions, and makes the soil more capable of absorbing and retaining moisture. Next week: Composting – what to use, what not to use, and the best containers.

marriage aS inStituted By god geneSiS 2:18, 22, 23-25 (part one) rev. JameS r thomaS | en. 2:18 “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a help appropriate for him.” In our modern “enlightened” age, mankind somehow has managed to befuddle itself, as usual, with confusion and convoluted thinking. Some 6,000 years after God instituted marriage and made it plain as to its function and purpose, people still act as though they don’t understand what marriage is. Gen. 1:27-28. So God created man in his own image…male and female created he them. And God blessed them and said unto them, “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it” The Biblical account is the recorded evidence of God’s intent and is available for all who say they believe God’s words/testimony/record of what he ordained and established and even if all don’t read, research or accept the Biblical account as valid, the history of marriage being an accepted institution is validated in every culture on planet earth.

G

The laws of reproduction of kind apply to the fish of the seas, the birds of the air and the animals on the land as well as man. Matthew 19:4-9. Jesus affirmed marriage and its sanctity. In Malachi 2:14 yet you say, why? Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously: yet she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant. The Trinity (Gen. 1:26-28) bears witness of the creation of the institution of marriage and the Son (Matt. 19:5-9) affirms its sanctity. In these last days, (Romans 1:21-32) Denominationalism and the push for a Global Unifying Ecumenical Church with their differing doctrinal philosophies have weaken and diffused the message of Christianity. In an age in which many claim they are called of God and many self-professed men of god have decided that God is wrong and that embracing, endorsing and supporting quasi-union (same sexual gender marriage?) between two males or two

u.S. Senate committee approval advanceS military deciSion againSt Syria By: BarBara mallory caraway | he Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution to allow the U.S. to exercise a military action against Syria. The vote was 10 in favor and 7 “no” votes. Secretary of State John Kerry made the case before the Committee. The resolution now moves to the full Senate vote before the U.S. House votes on the measure. The Joint Resolution authorizes limited and specific use of the United States Armed Forces to attack. It does not recommend combat operations and is not a declaration of war. The resolution’s authorization is for 60 days, but provides President Obama one 30-day extension if needed. The action is in response to Syria’s use of weapons of mass destruction against its own people and is an effort to limit the use of these weapons in the future. The resolution also seeks to protect the national security interest of the U.S. and it allies. President Obama sought congressional approval to strike Syria after evidence surfaced that Syrian President Bashar alAssad used chemical weapons against his own people in an August 21, 2013 attack in Damascus that killed over 1,000 people, including several hundred children.

T

Page 8

The President “drew a red line” promising that if al-Assad used chemical warfare on his own people, the U.S. would take military action. The President said that efforts of reaching a diplomatic solution have been exhausted. Syria has been involved in a civil war for the last two years which has cost more than 100,000 people their lives and 2 million more have been displaced. Earlier this year, President Obama issued sanctions against al-Assad in an effort to pressure his government to end the violence against his own people. The Executive Order also that included the charge for the government to transition to a democratic government. Bashar al-Assad, 47 years old has served as Syria’s President since 2000 when succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad. Hafez al-Assad was Syria’s President for 30 years. Barbara Mallory Caraway served six years in the Texas House of Representative and eight years on the Dallas City Council.

{ NATIONAL REVIEW } FairneSS in Sentencing By: congreSSwoman eddie Bernice JohnSon | .S. Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced key policy changes designed to reduce our nation’s prison population. Under Mr. Holder’s plan, the Justice Department will no longer hand out unduly harsh sentences to low-level drug offenders who have no connections to gangs and drug trafficking. Mr. Holder’s plan makes absolutely good sense. America has the highest documented prison population in the world. Nearly 2.3 million adults were incarcerated in federal, state and county prisons and jails in 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics. During the past two decades the country has witnessed an increase in its prison population largely due to mandatory sentencing policies that were implemented in the l980s. Many of those arrested and given such sentences were minor drug dealers. Mr. Holder announced that these people would be spared the mandatory sentencing guides that had given some of them sentences of ten years or more. Since President Richard Nixon announced the “war on drugs” in the early 1970s, our prison population has risen so dramatically that we have 25 percent of the world’s prison population while we account for only five percent of the world’s population. Currently, people convicted of conspiracy to sell 5kg of cocaine receive a mandatory ten year minimum sentence. Many jurisdictions have developed drug courts and effective drug treatment plans, but judges find their hands tied by the current sentencing requirements. Even, first time offenders have been subject to the policy that placed them behind bars for a decade. According to Justice Department figures the U.S. prison population of 1,571,013 has been slowly decreasing along with the country’s declining crime rate. There have been several attempts in Congress to reform sentencing policy, leading to speculation that an era of

U

www.dfwelitenews.com

massive prison incarceration would cease. Our current policy is also fiscally irresponsible. In 2010, housing prisoners in this country cost taxpayers $80 billion. These resources can be better used by keeping dangerous criminals incarcerated and making serious

attempts at rehabilitation rather than just warehousing individuals. Harsh, mandatory minimum sentences for minor drug crimes do not make sense. When we incarcerate minor offenders, many of whom are racial minorities, for extended periods we cripple communities, families and our economy. Once released many are unable to find employment and quickly resort to lives of crime. The Attorney General also announced that the Justice Department would also begin to review sentencing disparities in America, citing a recent study that concluded that black males received sentences that were 20 percent longer than whites convicted of similar offenses. A civil society does not become a safer one by simply prosecuting and incarcerating its citizens. While we must continue to fight criminal behavior, we must also be reasonable in our sentencing polices.

Since followers of Christ are supposed to return good for evil therefore, the wicked are reckless and wild in their attack of believers. However, Jesus was specific when He addressed this issue with His disciples: Luke 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him Matthew 18:21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? { COVER STORY }

South Dallas Under Siege By lorie Blair | n June 2 women were robbed and then rapped at gun point in south Dallas. No media alerts, no news and no warnings. Six weeks go by and then 7 more women are robbed and then attached. To know the area that we are talking about is the less affluent community around Fair Park; the forgotten part of the city where those that struggle the most reside. The place in our community where there are no police substation or medical facilities. The area where there are lots of boarded up businesses and homes. The area that has overgrown foliage in forgotten space and the area that business that are still surviving may not be the best kept area. It has the schools that struggle to education those that attend their schools and streets that need repair. Now does this mean that the residents that live there should be forgotten or preyed upon? This is not the throw away community that the perpetrator came to use as his personal assault playground. But this also serves notice that as a community we must change the way we are protected. Rape by definition is an act of violence that a man uses to debase and hurt women. The weaker sex… The sex that man, by God’s account is to love honor and protect. Well, as a community residents last Thursday night at True Lee Baptist Church questioned where were those that were supposed to protect these women and why did it take so long for media to be notified that there was a problem that we need to be on guard when moving through the community? Our men and women in blue have no substations in this community yet we have a high level of crime. The community feels that notice to stay on alert is the minimum they should have gotten even if no additional information was available to share. Police Chief David Brown shared that it took his detectives until last Tuesday to connect the dots and identify the pattern that identified there was a serial rapist in this community. In the meeting at True Lee Baptist Church the community questioned why did it take so long for the detectives to connect those dots and then to decide to

I

Page 10

inform the public and the city council that there is a problem? The first rape happened June 22 and it has taken months to notify the public that they need to be on alert. That as the night cools it is not safe to walk or jog through Fair Park for exercise. Those residents without central air they will need to lock their windows and doors instead of allowing fresh air to flow through their homes. Oh, I do not doubt that now that there is a light on this crime we will see a positive resolution but I must also ask those that were victimized why did it take you so long to participate in the process? As a community we cannot say we are forgotten if we do not honestly speak out and speak up when there are wrongs committed against us. Each victim has the obligation to themselves and to others to be an active participant in every step of the process; to be an advocate for each other women that he will target. The fact that he uses a gun should alert us that he has the opportunity to move from rape to murder. The rapist is reported to be a black man from the mid 20 to early 30s. He weighs about 200 pounds and is between 5’6 to 5’11 in height. He wears a tee shirt with basketball shorts and gold rimmed glasses. He covers his face so not to be easily identified and after robbing each victim he then takes them to a secluded area and sexually assaults them fleeing the scene in a gray four door Honda Civic or an older Volvo with tinted windows. { TOLIVER’S TALENTS } By: mark a. toliver ii | he college football season opened last week and we heard a lot about Johnny football. Johnny did do his thing against Rice, but there were a couple of other quarterbacks who put their mark down as well. Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater emerged as the next high profile college quarterback this season. Bridgewater a junior passed for 23-of 28 for 355 yards and 5 touchdowns against Ohio. But Bridgewater is not new to the spotlight, Bridgewater was Big East Rookie of the Year in 2011, he

{ LAND OF THE FREE? } By: leon Simon | othings Free, Home of the brave and land of the FR… ? Not in the America I live in, not in the America I fought for. I have no idea what it is about this country that make supposedly good people, want to work good people for free. That’s what the Civil War was supposed to be about, and we’re still having that problem now in the NCAA Athletics. Most of America’s finest or should I say Largest Universities, got most of their growth of the backs of athletes, football and basketball for sure. The idea must have come from the same people that decided to grow cotton, corn. And peas and use free labor to farm it. 2013 and we still can’t figure it out, IT DON”T WORK. For years now Texas A&M was always that other large school in Texas. They transfer to the SEC, which most people thought was a big mistake. They hire a new coach get a red shirt freshman out of Tyler Texas that no one knew was that good, and walla!! Things are going great, the beat Alabama in Alabama, unheard of. Here comes the dough. Money is rolling in. Wait a minute something is wrong, this young man that’s got this ball rolling made a few bucks signing autographs, foul!! The slaves are not supposed to make money, this is America. What rights did Johnny Manziel give up as an American to play football at Texas A&M. what right does

Bridgewater finished his freshman season completing 191 of 296 passes for 2,129 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a sophomore in 2012 Bridgewater started 11 of 12 regular season games. Bridgewater finished the regular season completing 267 of 387 passes for 3,452 yards with 25 Touchdowns and just 7 interceptions. Bridgewater finished 6th in the nation in completion percentage. For his play Bridgewater was named Big East Player of the Year. Bridgewater and his Louisville teammates entered the 2013 Sugar Bowl against the Florida Gators and were considered to be the underdogs. Although Florida boasted the Nation's #1 pass efficiency defense, Bridgewater passed for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns and was named the game's MVP in a 33-23 win. The other quarterback back that opened the Nation's eyes was Florida State QB "Famous" James Winston. any kid give up to play sports in America. They say they give them a free education, is that the kind Dexter Manly got at Oklahoma State. When he said he can’t read. These kids bring millions of dollars to these schools if you pay them according to what they bring in I’m sure they could pay their own tuition. The powers that be say there is no equitable way to pay everyone they can pay them. Is there any other part of our society that’s equitable and fair? That’s how labor unions got started in this country, I’m not endorsing unions but they use the fact that you can’t trust the powers that be to give you the real facts when it comes to money. There are multi millionaires paying less income tax than some of their employees. There are people in this country that get income tax refunds that don’t work. Which of those scenarios do you think is fair and equitable and they both happens in this country, so why is fair and equitable even brought up? If you think Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M have an equal chance at recruits and they are both state supported schools then you live in a make believe society. Texas Southern and 214-960-2795 the University of Houston almost touch each other, they’re both state supported you think they have an equal chance at recruiting? Nothings fair in this world or free, but there are some things that are recognized as being right and wrong. Do the right thing NCAA.

Winston put on a show against Pitt in his first college game. In his first college game, the red-shirt freshman finished 25- of-27 for 356 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, and also scored a TD on the ground. { AT CAFÉ BRAZIL IN BISHOP ARTS } ell when you go into Café Brazil you would think that you are in an artsy upscale Brazilian café that encourages you to come in with your laptop or iPad and use their free WiFi while you have a “Bite” to eat or some good coffee. In my travels I stopped in to have a quick lunch. Well, today I want something different but not too heavy. At Café Brazil they had a lot of breakfast items but settle in on the Honey Chipotle Fish Tacos. My waiter, Eduardo helped me with my decision and recommend that I have the apple corn salsa on the side since it has cinnamon in it. Okay, I can go for that and if all fails I can eat the apple salsa by itself if the cinnamon is way too strong. So I thought. Service was wonderful and Eduardo was attentive enough and knew all the answers to my questions. When my order was delivered although I asked for the apple corn salsa on the side it was mixed in my meal. Now Eduardo did offer to have it remade if I like but I decided to try it as it was prepared. Oh my NOOOOOOOOOOO…. Eduardo was right the cinnamon is over bearing and not a good mix with blackened tilapia. Maybe nothing was a good mix for the fishy tilapia that I was served.

paStoral Search You know what they say when you get an overpowering serving of fish. IT IS OLD… Now I love tilapia because of it is a light white fish that is normally never fishy. It is typically good to bake or lightly grill. When I am really watching what I am eating I like to bake it at home with peppers, onion and tomatoes. Maybe I should have gone home and made myself some fish tacos. Hmmmm… The Chipotle rice was over cooked and dry. The side salad was recognizable but way too small to fill you up. Now after such a dismal meal from their signature menu selection I decided to take home their coffee cake. Oh yes there is redemption. It was just right. Not too sweet but sweet enough. Nice and moist and enough to fill me up. It was the right size for the price but I should have gotten a second serving for a late night “Bite” later that night.

OAK CLIFF CHURCHES BURGLARIZED t will be a different Sunday Service for four Oak Cliff churches this week. By the action of what appears to be one man he has left churches in disarray and without the needed tools to perform Sunday Services. The four churches all burglarized this last week are Rev Robert Kennedy of Greater Emmanuel Baptist Church, Rev Kenneth Andrews of Deliverance Baptist Church, Rev David Early of New Calvary Hill and Rev Joe Moore of Calvary Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church. For these smaller churches the theft is enough to place a stain on their limited resources but what is more devastating is the strain that was placed on them for the damages to their building. Some doors were kicked in while other roofs were cut to make way for the thief to make entry. V The $10,000 or so price tag to

make the necessary repairs will serve as a far more devastating burden then the items stolen. Rev Moore from Calvary Philadelphia stated that the 100 backpacks that were to be given to needed community children can be replaced but the thought that someone had such a disregard for a place of God is devastating. Rev Moore asked that the community pray for the churches and for our community stating that “if prayer doesn’t bring a change then a change will not be able to be achieved.” Rev Moore also stated that ministerial leaders and community leaders all need to come together with to come together and figure out how to support this community. If you can identify the man seen in the picture please call Dallas Police.

FORMER TRACK-AND-FIELD CHAMPION ATHLETE MARION JONES IS GUEST SPEAKER ormer track-and-field worldchampion athlete Marion Jones will be the guest speaker at the Second Annual Fit and Faithful Living Expo on Saturday, September 21, 2013. The event will be held from 3:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center/Theater at Southern Methodist University, 3140 Dyer, Dallas, Texas 75275. Fit and Faithful Living (FFL) was started by LaChanda Dupard as a way for people to combine a healthy lifestyle and faith-based living. FFL provides fitness events and workshops to help people fight obesity. Dupard started a fitness regimen and changed her unhealthy eating habits to decrease her medical-history health risks such as high blood pressure, lupus, arthritis and high cholesterol. Her husband Reggie Dupard, a retired NFL player, was able to reduce his blood pressure and cholesterol numbers after he got involved with the FFL program. "After watching my husband's health start to decline and then losing a very close co-worker two days after her gastric bypass, I was driven to do something to help those close to me and to spread the word on how positive eating and fitness changes in your life style can improve and extend your life." Marion Jones forfeited the five trackand-field medals she won at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia after she admitted in 2007 that she took performance-enhancing drugs and served a six-month jail sentence in 2008. Jones will be talking about "Responsibility, Redemption, and Resilience" during her keynote address. "It is important for people to know that it's possible to make a mistake in your life, but it's what you do after the mistake that people are going to remember you by," Jones says in her website. Carol Woods credits the first FFL Expo in 2012 with changing her life and helping her to win the Ms. Bikini Mama title in the Lonestar State Natural Bodybuilding competition in Azle, Texas on June 22, 2013. Carol was an out-of-shape spinning instructor when she heard 77-year-old bodybuilder Ernestine Shepherd speak at the 2012 FFL Expo. Ms. Shepherd will return to speak again this year. "That expo motivated me to make life style, nutritional and fitness changes to better my life. I have

lost more than 30 pounds since then," said Carol Woods. Woods says she promotes health awareness at Kilgore Baptist Church where her husband is pastor and also a bodybuilder. Mostly, FFL attracts people who just want to develop a healthy life style like Janice Simon. Simon is bringing more than a dozen people from Oberlin, Louisiana to the FFL Expo. Janice heard LaChanda and Reggie Dupard speak in Oberlin, Louisiana last year. Simon started the exercise group "Team Determined." She credits FFL with helping he drop 30 of the 180 pounds she needs to lose while eliminating the need for one of her three high-blood-pressure medications. "I have been a crash dieter and struggled with food all my life. Fit and Faithful Living has helped me to break bad food patterns," said Janice Simon. The FFL website and Facebook page provide our group with valuable information." Other Fit and Faithful Living Expo speakers include: Dr. Glenn Dooley: a Chiropractor and Holistic Medicine expert who will talk about "Living a Pain Free Life" Dr. Lindsay Hammond: a Physical Therapist who will address "Avoiding Injuries While Getting Fit" Charles "Chuck" Weaver: a CrossFit Guru who will lead a CrossFit workout session (attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes so they can participate). The Expo concludes with a panel including Marion Jones, Ernestine Shepherd, Dr. Lindsay Hammond and Dr. Glenn Dooley sharing their wisdom on health and fitness. Dinner will be provided by sponsor My Fit Foods. For more information about the expo visit www.fitandfaithfulliving.org
