until it’s not

People have commented that his decision to kneel during the national anthem is “un-American” and that he should be reprimanded. However, given that America is a nation built on free choice and freedom of speech and expression, would it not be “un-American” if he was forced to stand?

It seems strange to say it, but it is “American” for the Ku Klux Klan to hold a rally on the steps of the court house. It is “American” for the Westboro Baptist Church to protest on the sides of a gay pride parade. While these groups are defined by their hate and terror, it is their distinctly American right to spew hate without repercussions from the government. Same as it is the right for St. Jude’s Hospital to hold a public speech about ending child cancer.

That is what makes America

both great and infuriating.

The First Amendment, at its best, protects the people who are trying to use their voice to make a change: the oppressed, the disenfranchised, the frustrated and the marginalized. However, it also protects those who will fight against these people: the privileged, the wealthy and the power hungry.

It is a double-edged sword that people love to wield in their personal crusades.

Therefore, it is critical that we are capable of examining our privileges and, instead of drowning out the voices of those that need to be heard, use the rights granted by the First Amendment to create a stronger, more unified society.

For example, the next time you see a protest that is using tactics or is for a cause you do not agree with, consider one crucial aspect of protesting: Protesting is meant

I cannot stress this enough.

Protests are supposed to bring about change, and change simply does not happen when people see the issue, nod passively and go back to living their comfortable, unaffected lives.

I urge you to think about this statement, especially with all of the controversial LGBT, gender and racial assemblies that are taking place every day. If you disagree with their tactics, how else would you like them to protest?

Be sure that your answer is not “in a way that is quieter”, “in a way that makes it easier for me to stomach” or “in a way that I can better ignore it”.

The day we can accept all aspects of the First Amendment is the day we can finally move forward.

f I were to ask people what they think about the First Amendment, the answers would probably be largely positive. People love the idea of being able to say what they want without governmental repercussions, freely practice the religion they want, petition the government for change, assemble without interference and to publish what they like. After all, these freedoms are arguably the most distinctly “American” freedoms the American people enjoy.

But I feel like these rights may need a slight bit of rephrasing.

People love the idea of being able to say what they want when the words being spoken are ones they agree with. People like to freely practice their religion, but will openly harass a Muslim woman wearing a hijab or a Sikh man wearing a turban, calling them ‘terrorists’. People love the idea of assembling to support a cause, but when a Black Lives Matter protest interrupts traffic, it is a nuisance.

To be frank, people tend to support the rights the First Amendment guarantees until they are exercised in a way they do not agree with.

Not to say that people cannot have differing opinions, but a problem arises when people think that others should be stopped from voicing their opinion.

S

ports at Columbus East have always been held to a very high standard. From winning State Championships to having a great turnout every week at basketball games, athletes have always been celebrated in our school and by everyone in our community.

However, a large group of East students feel left out: the Performing Arts Department.

The Performing Arts Department tries tirelessly to give their audiences the best experience.

Extremely hard work goes into those performances and, more often than not, it goes unrecognized.

As both a second-year member of the Acalympians and a first-year member of the swim team here at East, I have a unique view of the situation. Students in the Performing Arts Department tend to view sports as a waste of time and that the people who participate in sports are not preparing themselves for the future. The reverse of that is also true; people who participate in sports do not view the many sections of performing arts as being as important as their own activities.

There is no denying the huge popularity of the football team and the massive national success of the wrestling team, but the Performing Arts Department has their own sets of accomplishments as well. Acting and singing gives people the opportunity to express themselves and move out of their comfort zone, and there are many opportunities for people within the

department to pursue jobs that require degrees from colleges, like operating cameras and stage lights or even being in the production as an actor or actress.

The amount of work that goes into setting a stage and getting everything ready for a play or concert is staggering, and not many people think of that when watching a show.

Singing in a group at East has given me the opportunity to break out of my comfort zone and become more social. Being a member has also opened my eyes to the opportunities within the Performing Arts Department and how much I did not know went on behind the scenes. However, the same thing is present in sports media.

There are people whose job it is to operate the lights at games, analyze player statistics and find patterns within certain people’s actions and how they move on a field. Both sports and the arts have great opportunities for people in the future, and having a history of being involved in a sport or a high school stage setting is almost essential to both career paths.

It is not a matter of better or worse; sports and arts are just different, and just because two people are different does not mean that they cannot get along.

Performers and athletes are simply just people living in separate worlds. I have friends that play almost every sport here at East, and I also have friends that are a

part of the fall musical, band, choir and show choir.

All of the Performing Arts Department groups and all of the sports teams are extremely important for a social structure such as East’s to exist. Not everyone can play sports and not everyone can play an instrument or sing in front of a crowd of people, but everyone can be nicer, and

nobody should put down a certain department of the school.

If you are reading this and you are in either of these departments, take time to realize that the people on the “other side” put in as much work as you do to make their final product a success. Although sports often steal the stage, performing arts will forever be essential to the students at East.

it’s not just girls: BOys body image

hen the conversation of teen body image arises, people tend to think of girls. Many girls are subjected to feeling as if they have to look a certain way because of high social standards and media.

However, girls are not the only ones subjected to body image pressure. Boys are too.

When it comes to talking about body image, one would think it is not a prevalent occurrence in the lives of the teen boy population.

It is easy to assume that boys do not have the same problems with body image as girls do. As girls, we are influenced by social media, television and magazines to look skinny and to be flawless regardless of the emotional or physical consequences. The media is also sending messages to boys, and they are not always good.

Many boys within the teen population feel as if they need to look lean and muscular in order to be accepted by society. This

standard has increased greatly according to the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA).

The sexual objectification of boys and the influence of social media affect how boys view themselves by encouraging them to meet extreme ideals, such as having rock hard abs or face the consequences of being either too fat or skinny. These ideals can be damaging to how boys view themselves. This desire to look a certain way to fit ridiculous standards can become a dangerous physical issue for many boys.

Data from the NEDA shows that 25% of normal weight boys perceive themselves to be underweight, 90% of boys have the goal of bulking up and 68% say they have too little muscle.

These statistics go to show that boys do care about their appearance and the high body image standards set by media or peers.

Scout’s Honor: Will Bruin

unior Will Bruin has been a part of Boy Scouts since he was in kindergarten. Boy Scouts is a developmental program for young boys that aims to teach them life lessons while remaining fun and entertaining.

Bruin is one of the oldest Scouts in his troop, and is working to achieve Eagle Scout status. To become an Eagle Scout, Bruin has to go through other ranks, receive specific merit badges and serve several terms as a leader in his troop. Bruin is currently working on his service learning project for Boy Scouts as one of his last steps to becoming an Eagle Scout.

On his quest to become an

Eagle Scout, Bruin has many fond memories of the program. One of his favorite memories is the trip to Canada that his troop took in the summer of 2016.

“My troop drove to Ely, Minnesota, and paddled 57 miles through Boundary Waters, Canada. We were gone for a total of 10 days. It was a lot of fun and one of my favorite memories,” Bruin said.

Bruin has also learned many valuable lessons from being apart of such an unique program for so long.

“Eventually, my goal is to become an Eagle Scout, but I’ve learned so much from the program already. I’m kind of a shy person and it’s taught me to take initiative

High school can be very stressful for many students with all of the difficult class choices students can take to prepare them for college. It is not a big surprise if a student does not have a full understanding of a certain topic. Counselor Andy Taube suggests many steps to be successful in classes at East.

First, he advised students to ask questions. Ask any questions before, during or after class.

asking a teacher in resource for help or clarification. East is fortunate enough to have a resource system that allows students to get information from other teachers to help them thrive. In order to be successful in any class, attendance is mandatory.

Learning is not possible if you are not in class. The last thing Taube suggests to students is to never wait to get help as soon as you are confused with a subject. Never wait until it is too late.

So here it is. A great website that sharpens your math skills and has fun games to play is Cool Math Games. One game that comes highly recommended

Nurse April Dougherty explained the actions students should take when they get sick at school. Students should come see the nurse when they are not feeling well, and always have a pass. Going to the nurse instead of just leaving school

Ranging from feminism to pro-life, students are active in advocating for social and

political issues all around the world.

COVER n Jan. 2015, senior Graydon Chisholm could be found on Constitution Avenue marching to evoke change. Chisholm participated in the annual March for Life protest, which is held in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. This pro-life rally is conducted to protest against abortion on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case.

The first march was held on Jan. 22, 1974, following the infamous Roe v. Wade court case in which a Texas resident brought attention to the inability of a woman to legally abort her child. The final finding of this case led to the decision that a woman’s decision to abort her child is her

right. As a result, 46 other states made abortion legal and the law is upheld today. Finding this ruling to be an unjust and immoral one, the March for Life organization formed, and the annual rallies began. The protest has now prevailed for over four decades.

Despite the longevity and persistence of efforts to make abortion illegal, Congress has shown little openness in adopting the ideals of the pro-life movement. While Chisholm knows his role as an activist may be miniscule, he enjoys exercising his First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

Employment of this Constitutional right extends beyond Chisolm’s efforts. Activism has

become more popular in all parts of the world, involving a multitude of social and political issues.

In September, Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, sparked a media frenzy when he decided to take a knee during the National Anthem.

Following the game, Kaepernick revealed that he chose not to stand in attempt to diminish racial inequality in America. Beyond making a public statement with his actions, he has promised to grant the first $1 million of his salary to communities with limited opportunities due to their ethnicity and racial background.

Kaepernick’s influence has transcended onto other athletes.

The increase in the decision of

those involved in high school athletics are not exempt from this influence. The inflation of high school football players deciding to take a knee during the National Anthem has been deemed “the Kaepernick effect.”

At Garfield High School in Seattle, players and coaches alike have decided to follow Kaepernick’s example and kneel during the National Anthem. Their decision was made with the intention to support the awareness of racial separation brought to light by the 49ers quarterback.

Student activists are not subdued to Washington. An uproar of activism brought on by students in cities throughout the United States has become a norm on certain

During early November 2015, a week-long protest occurred at Missouri University. Student Jonathan Butler, a ringleader in protest, went on a hunger strike for the duration of a week.

Along with this, the Missouri football team refused to play another game until the concerns it had with racial injustice were addressed. These issues pertained to ethnocentrism being displayed on the

The concrete objective of the protest was to remove the university president, Tim Wolfe, out of his position for his inability to acknowledge the racial inequality on campus. Wolfe eventually gave students what they were asking for and stepped down on the Monday following the strike. The University of Missouri chancellor, R. Bowen Loftin, has also promised to work harder on making sure the campus is inclusive of all ethnicities and backgrounds.

The modern world of technological advance that challenges societal and political implements no longer requires extensive planning or organization to successfully convey a message.

The simplicity of protest is at the fingertips of anyone who has internet available and a point that can be condensed into 140 characters.

The accessibility of social media sites has allowed for more voices and issues to be represented and responded to than ever before in history.

Junior Josie Royer utilizes this social media platform to project her beliefs.

“I use social media as an outlet for protest because I feel like in general I’m a really opinionated person,and I think that as a generation, we can use our voice through the different tools of social media at our fingertips,” Royer said.

Royer is very involved in using her voice not only on social media, but also in school.

“If people make comments, I’m not afraid to educate them on my opinion. I speak up in class, specifically in my ACP US History class. I feel like I can really use my voice in that class because we talk about a lot of controversial topics, and I think it’s really important to talk about your opinion and what you think about how things have changed throughout history,” Royer said.

One issue that Royer is passionate about is the Free the Nipple Campaign. This movement went viral as a hashtag in early 2016, as the result of the social inequality among men and women when exposing their bodies. The double standard highlighted by this campaign focuses on the idea of how in society it is acceptable for men to show their nipples in public, while the practice is taboo for women.

“I used to and still do protest about the Free The Nipple Campaign. I think it’s really important because I believe that equality is extremely significant. On one of my Instagram accounts I posted a Free The Nipple picture and it got a lot of really good, positive feedback, especially from girls. I think that is a really important thing, to have people use their followers and their social media to inspire other people to believe in the right things that really do matter,” Royer said.

Through this campaign and others, a continuation in support of women’s rights prevails today.

The universal accessibility of the issue opens the door to include all voices.

Senior Lauren Wagner, a self-proclaimed feminist, takes full advantage of being able to articulate and portray her beliefs about the equality of both genders. Aside from gender equality, she also advocates for the LGBT community. Through her activism on social media, she aims to inform and inspire.

“I think just bringing up these issues, even if it is just on my Twitter or Instagram, if a single person looks at that and thinks ‘I’ve never thought about that,’ then I see that as making a difference. If it is just one person, they can affect another person and then you can affecta whole group of people without even knowing it,” Wagner said. Although Wagner is extremely vocal with her beliefs on social

media, the parameters of her involvement are not confined to that of the online realm.

In April 2015, the state of Indiana signed on to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allows businesses to have a legal defense in the pursuit or exercise of their religion when they operate their company in accordance with those beliefs. The discrepancy and concern with Governor Pence signing this bill was the potential in which LGBT individuals could be denied service based on their sexual orientation.

In response to this law, Wagner took to the streets with other people in favor of repealing the bill in a traditional picketing type of protest. She stood outside of the Columbus courthouse with her mother and brother, where they held up signs and made their voices heard. In the end, the bill was passed and became an Indiana law, but the experience has reinforced a sense of compassion throughout the community.

“Even if you think that your voice doesn’t matter, you are adding to the support or the objection of this issue and when people keep adding and keep adding, then you actually do have one big voice. Smaller voices do matter, even if sometimes it feels like they don’t,” Wagner said.

“I was raised in Louisville, Kentucky and they had a tradition of segregation, and while I was in high school they began what was called court ordered busing as a form of desegregating and integrating, which opened my eyes to protesting. I am still involved in more formal activism such as the March on Washington and the People’s Climate March,” Lewis said.

Through his work as an activist, Mr. Lewis embodies what activism and citizenship look like in everyday life. The contributions of an individual should not be deterred by age or feeling inferior to opposition or insignificant to supporting a cause. Anyone can make a difference just in voicing their opinion. Whether that is by means of reposting a tweet or marching through the streets with a crowd of supporters, the importance of expressing passion about a cause should not be undermined. The sucessfulness of society depends upon people bringing forth the injustices large and small, to build a better world for now and the future.

How Columbus is dealing with the Carbon Footprint

The Columbike was born when the Columbus Parks and Recreation Foundation and City Council decided to begin a sharing program in Columbus. Soon they began a design and launched the white bikes with blue and green letters onto the streets of Columbus.

Each bike is equipped with size adjustment components, large baskets for belongings, three gear options and a bell to provide for almost every need of the rider.

The bikes were aimed to be modern enough to be attractive to the eye while still bringing elements of the traditional bike back to the Columbus community.

The Columbike program hopes to encourage the observation of Columbus attractions such as buildings, bridges and stores surrounding the city. Due to the focus of the program being on Co-

lumbus culture there is a required check-in, every 30 minutes, at any Columbike location to keep the riders in the community.

Though these check-ins are required, one can pay $8 for a 24hour renting period. An $80 annual renting fee is also an option and allows the bike benefits to last the entire year.

How to Start In Columbus, bike stations can be found at Donner Park, Mill Race Center, the parking garage between Fourth and Fifth streets, outside of the Commons Mall, the Columbus Visitor’s Center, between Fifth and California streets, Pleasant Grove and Columbus Regional hospitals.

Once a user locates one of these bike stations, they will be able to spot a Columbike machine, pay with a credit or debit card, enter a code texted to them, select their bike and begin riding.

Riding around Columbus should then be a comfortable and easy process as the rider can adjust the bike to their liking and experience a smooth ride. With several bike paths being added around city streets, a customer has an expanded ability to choose the difficulty of their path.

When finished, a rider can simply return their bike to any station around town at their convenience.

If the rider wishes, they can download the B-Cycle App and find out which station is closest to them, therefore making the return process as painless as possible.

Believable Benefits But how would the idea work in a town as small as Columbus?

This question was soon answered when the Columbus Parks and Recreation Foundation created a process according to the style of a community-loving city like Columbus. Along with

t some point or another, travel comes into the lives of all people. Transportation is a necessity. Without modern methods of transportation, what would one do but remain in one place longing to travel?

This need, however, comes with a price when cost, carbon footprint and traffic are taken into account. This has sparked the popularity of a transportation innovation entering many communities today: bike sharing.

Columbus recognized an issue with wasteful transportation and launched this new idea into action locally with what is now known as the Columbike.

What is the Columbike?

The vision was a whole community being able to share a method of transportation, helping their health and deleting environmental detriments with an exceptionally

There are group rides on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. meeting at 12th and Washington streets.

Women’s rides are Tuesday nights at 6 pm and meet at the Eos statue downtown. Another fun option is the monthly ‘Full Moon Friday’ ride meeting at the corner of 4th and Washington streets.

These rides were a major draw to the biking program and the success of the Columbike can be majorly attributed to the friendly attitude associated with each of them.

The Future of the Columbike The Columbike is a fairly new but extremely popular craze. At least one bike seems to be used at all times, foreshadowing a promising future for the system.

It is no secret that those in Columbus love to do almost everything together: from talking, to eating and to exercising, which could explain the rapid popularity of bike sharing. Community biking allows for social activity, while promoting physical and environmental health qualities attractive to community members.

Renting a bike for a relatively small fee and riding in mildly difficult terrain has taken off greatly and does not look to be on the decline, though the popularity of the bikes is expected to decrease a bit due to the colder weather approaching.

Much excitement has been sparked through this transportation phenomenon leaving few unhappy. The people of Columbus, their health and the environ-

ment are living with the benefits of biking each day.

The Carbon Footprint Transportation, as discussed, is unavoidable and biking is not practical for every person depending on climate, distance to destination, and other hindering elements of this travel tool.

However, the Transportation and Climate Change Clearinghouse gave information that transportation is responsible for the second most prominent greenhouse gas emissions in the world, which leaves one choosing between environmental protection and efficiency. What is the solution?

Many wise and curious scien-

tists have pondered this question and have reached solutions focusing on the regulation of vehicle emissions and alternative-fuel technology.

These new fuels include biodiesel, propane, hydrogen and many others, but present issues due to the higher prices and different models of cars required to compensate for a more environmentally friendly transportation approach.

This price surging leaves many students to default to vehicles which harm the environment, especially in the winter months when biking or walking is not an option.

A poll of East students showed 95 percent of students using car

to get to school, followed by 3 percent relying on bus transportation, 2 percent walking and none biking to school.

As this study proves, biking is not a practical solution for many teenagers, and they are forced to choose between cost convenience and time efficiency.

Though, yes, there is an impossibility to using healthier transportation at all times, every ride makes a difference. After all, is it not worth a little extra travel time to say ‘thank you’ to the planet?

When temperature and weather allow, ride a bike. No step is too small to slow the stride of the carbon footprint.

Her mother is also a big source of support and inspiration.

“My mom is the main person who inspired me to start running,” Lewis said. “She’s also big into fitness. I went to a lot of her races as a younger child, and I always wanted to do it too. One of the greatest things was when my mom finished her first Ironman triathlon.”

It is almost impossible to switch your entire dietary habits overnight or start lifting as much weight as professional weight lifters immediately, but anyone can ease themselves into a healthful lifestyle.

Local health and wellness advocate and chiropractor, Dr. Scott Taulman, advises in seminars is to cut down on processed or packaged foods and increase consumption of fresh produce.

He also advises to listen closely to one’s body. Take the

transitioning process slowly and comfortably, therefore gradually moving away from unhealthy habits. Swap unhealthy foods for cleaner options and be sure to always remain aware of portion control.

In combination with healthy eating, an important component of living a healthy lifestyle is staying physically active. If the thought of a strict exercise routine is too daunting, try to involve friends for extra encouragement.

Gym memberships typically offer a variety of equipment to use for a low cost. Everyone beginning their health journey could find it more enjoyable with like-minded friends who share the same goal of obtaining a better lifestyle.

Surrounding yourself with positive influences increases the chances of having a larger support system who will encourage the process.

Another way to stay physically active is to train for an event. For

example, sign up for a 5k that supports a cause you are passionate about, such as a fund for breast cancer treatment or Alzheimer’s research. Begin working little by little to meet the ‘deadline’. One would feel more accomplished when finishing something that ultimately has a greater reward than a fun t-shirt.

Despite the negative stigma around running, it is not entirely unenjoyable, for it can be very satisfying.

“Running makes you feel so much better about yourself. It gives you goals to work towards and I have met so many people through running,” Lewis said.

Lewis is very enthusiastic about her experiences and believes everyone should have a positive outlook on exercise because of it’s many benefits.

Whatever the motive is for running or beginning your fitness journey, Lewis urges everyone to “just get out there and do it.”

The Columbus Ethnic Expo provides a way for people to step out of everyday American life and experience small pieces of life in other cultures from around the world. Between food, music and fashion, there is something for everyone at the Ethnic Expo.

Burgmeier talks about what he likes the most about the Ethnic Expo, even though he would argue the festival is not entirely authentic.

“It kind of misses the different cultures, but you get the food,” Burgmeier said.

Food booths from a wide variety of countries attend, with options spanning from Swiss chocolate to Vietnamese egg rolls.

Students agree that for the most part they go to the festival for the food booths.

n the weekend of October 8, Columbus will hold its annual fall festival, the Ethnic Expo, which celebrates cultures from around the world. The event includes cultural food booths, live entertainment and a parade. This year, the co-host countries are China and Taiwan.

Each year, the Ethnic Expo attracts 30,000-35,000 people to downtown Columbus. One of the biggest reasons people come to the festival is for the food.

Possible Shake-Up In The HHC

he Hoosier Hills Conference, or HHC, is an IHSAA sanctioned athletic conference based in south central and southeast Indiana. The conference, which includes East, is made up of eight schools that range from 4A up to 6A classes in

football. The HHC is widely known for its basketball, as it houses one of the largest high school gymnasiums in the entire country (Seymour at #3).

The Hoosier Hills Conference has not had a school leave the conference since the 1970s, when

Bedford left in 1973 and Bloomington North followed in 1974.

Teams that could possibly be departing soon are Madison Consolidated and Jennings County.

Cast of “Anything Goes” Swims Against Rough Waters

SYNOPSIS Billy Crocker, a bottom tier Wall Street broker, falls in love with a debutant, Holly Harcourt. Harcourt, an engaged woman, arrives on a cruise ship with fiance unaware that she will again run into Crocker, whose feelings she reciprocates. They meet a nightclub performer evangelist, Reno Sweeney, who also has a crush on Crocker.

“Public Enemy #13”, a gangster, Moonface Martin, sneaks onto the boat with his friend with the help of Crocker. Moonface gives Crocker the gift of a new identity and helps him try to win the heart of the girl of his dreams, while also trying to keep his true identity a secret.

“Whenever it’s in the spring we run into the issue that we can’t go see North’s show and sometimes they can come see ours. We thought to share the love and stuff, we would switch our show

so we could have that community support,” Senior Loryn Weddle said.

The major problem faced by the cast due to the fall sports conflicts was the amount of males who auditioned, with five male leads available and only four auditioning.

“It’s a very male heavy show,

and we lack males.” Weddle said.

This has been solved through a common tactic in theatre of casting an actor or actress in an opposite gender role. Rather than searching for another actor, Weddle has been casted as the character Moonface Martin, an originally male role.

Regardless of audition-season conflicts, the cast continues to rehearse their lines and music and the self proclaimed techies continue to create a multi-tiered set, with never before seen features such as an area under the set for an onstage orchestra.

While most casts tend to say “The show must go on” when faced with difficulties, maybe our own Drama Department could coin a new phrase: “Anything Goes.”

Every cast of a musical faces problems along the road to the final performance. Through auditions, the creation of sets, rehearsals and dance routines, a few bumps along the way are always expected.

This years Columbus East Drama Department’s production of “Anything Goes” is no exception to the trend.

Due to the change in season that the musical is being produced in, from spring to fall, more sports related conflicts were created and multiple actors were unable to audition.

Old buildings are haunted by stories, and with the Pump House there are plenty. Over 100 years ago, the Columbus Water Works

were erected in order to provide safe drinking water from the White River and electricity for the city.

That building is now the Upland Pump House, and in between its two lives it served as a senior center for almost 30 years.

Public spaces are the pride of cities; New York has Central Park, Chicago has Millennium Park and Columbus has Mill Race. Yet the green space just outside of downtown was not always a jewel. Back in the early 1960s, it was seen as a blight; there was litter, there were drugs and it was not a safe place to be at night.

Lacking the amphitheater and recreation facilities of now, it was an unused open space that flooded often,

giving Mill Race a bad reputation in the olden days. Yet, a group of volunteers calling themselves the Mill Race River Rats attempted to make the park a better place, starting with litter removal in the late 1960s, and evolving to activism that pushed for the reinvention that gave us the park we have today.

T

he Netflix original series “Stranger Things” was released this summer and has garnered massive attention in the short few months it has been available.

The show has developed a huge following and near perfect reviews.

The relevancy of Netflix shows has grown in the past few years, and statistics are showing that people are beginning to switch from TV to online streaming platforms, such as Netflix and Hulu.

Netflix is taking advantage of its popularity and revenue to produce quality television shows for its ever-growing audience.

In addition to phasing from live television to the streaming platform, many popular series are

switching from a higher amount of episodes per season to fewer episodes per season. “Stranger Things” is a prime example of this trend, with only eight episodes in the season, each an hour long.

This formatting makes shows more accessible to a wider, busier audience.

Besides the platform “Stranger Things” was released on, many elements of this show have provided an appeal to a large demographic that makes it stand out from other shows.

The show has sparked interest in a large audience due in part to the nostalgic feel of the series.

From its music and costumes to the storyline, “Stranger Things” brings back the iconic ‘80s feel.

The ’80s aesthetic has been something to be obsessed about, from trendy Tumblr-posting teenagers to the adults who have grown up in the decade.

While “Stranger Things” feels like a show right out of the ‘80s, it still manages to feel fresh and new in 2016.

Along with the aesthetic, part of

what makes this show appealing is its characters. The outsiders in this story creates a sense of relatability. The development of the story through its characters makes the audience feel more emotionally attached to the characters.

With such complex characters, the short season makes the plot easier to understand, but also is able to keep its depth and is still interesting.

“Stranger Things” has become an immediate cult classic and has given Netflix an even bigger foothold. If trends continue, we may see TV views decline even more over the next few years.

TV in its entirety is undergoing massive changes, and this may be the strangest thing of them all.

presenting your 2016 King and Queen: On Friday, September 30, seniors Harry Crider and Kennedi Satterfield were chosen by their peers to receive the honor of Columbus East homecoming king and queen. During halftime of the football game versus Madison, Crider took a break from the action to greet Satterfield, and the nominees received a trip around the field in Corvettes sponsored by the Corvette Club of Columbus before being crowned.
