St Lucia Plans Green Energy Push St Lucia is planning a series of “major initiatives” in the area of sustainable energy this year, according to Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy. The Governor General, who was speaking this week ahead of the country’s budget debate, pointed to climate change as a major factor in the government’s thinking. Read more

29-4-2013 ||Rural Electrification Programme Ends A new entity to replace the Rural Electrification Programme (REP) has been mandated to develop renewable energy solutions for Jamaicans who live too far from the national power grid. Making his contribution to the Budget Debates yesterday, Energy Minister, Phillip Paulwell, said the REP had been renamed Jamaica Energy Solutions Limited and given a new mission. Read more 29-4-2013 || St. Lucia Promotes Renewable Energy Use The Government of St. Lucia is developing a program to promote renewable energies in order to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, announced Governor General Pearlette Louisy. Read more 26-4-2013 || Clear Roadmap Needed For Energy Sector – JMA The Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) is hoping the Energy Minister Philip Paulwell will present a clear plan to address the challenges facing the energy sector when he makes his contribution to the Budget Debate in Parliament this afternoon. Read more 26-4-2013 ||Solar Lighting For Sando Waterfront San Fernando Mayor Navi Muradali is calling for solar and wind powered lighting along the San Fernando Waterfront which is currently being developed. Muradali, chairman of the Green Expo committee says the renewable power was one way to conserve energy. Read more 22-3-2013 || Overseas Consultants Conducting Grid Analysis ENERGY Minister Phillip Paulwell said overseas consultants have been contracted to conduct a grid analysis of the ability and capacity of the island’s transmission and distribution network to absorb electricity from renewable energy. According to Paulwell, this project, which is being funded by the World Bank, will help the Government to determine what is happening with the grid. Read more

25-4-2013 ||Grenada Moving To Liberalise Electricitysector – Attempts To Reduce Light Bills Grenada says it will use funds provided by the World Bank to facilitate the liberalisation of its electricity sector as part of an initiative being undertaken by other countries within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Public Utilities Minister Gregory Bowen told Parliament that EC$1.4 million from the World Bank would be used to facilitate the process. Read more 24-4-2013 || TT And Indonesia To Explore Energy Trinidad and Tobago and Indonesia have laid the foundation for possible future cooperation in energy projects, as a result of a meeting between Energy Minister Kevin C. Ramnarine and Her Excellency Prianti Gagarin Djatmiko Singgih, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to this country. Read more 24-4-2013 || Invest In Energy The Minister of Finance is encouraging investment in the renewable energy sector in Barbados. Speaking last night at the official opening of the Barbados Branch of the Pan American International Insurance located in Fontabelle, Christopher Sinckler indicated to Barbados’ newest insurance agent that renewable energy is still largely untapped in this country and therefore a good investment. Read more 22-4-2013 || Wigton To Add 62% More Wind Power Wigton Windfarm Limited’s (WWFL) plans to start expansion this year. WWFL projects that it will generate additional energy of 63 gigawatthours (GWh) per year from an extra capacity of 24 megawatts (MW) by 2015. Read more 22-4-2013 || EDF Walks Away From 100MW Dominica Geothermal Project French utility EDF has reportedly withdrawn from a 100MW geothermal project set to be developed in Dominica putting the future of the scheme in doubt. Read more 18-4-2013 || Cuba Seeking More Renewable Energy Projects Increasing its call to foreign investors to participate in renewable-energy projects on the island, the Cuban government upped its plans with five biomass, wood, solar and wind energy projects, the Asociación de Empresarios Europea Hispano Lusa Cubana first reported. Read more 17-4-2013 ||Barbados And China Talk Renewable Energy, Trade Barbados and China are planning to expand their bilateral cooperation to areas including green energy and trade, according to Foreign Minister Senator Maxine McClean. The Minister recently met with Chinese Ambassador to Barbados Xu Hong to discuss what she called “critical areas,” including renewable energy, sports and culture, agriculture and industry. The Caribbean Hotel Energy and Action Project is a carry-over from the last fiscal year, and is being implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, with funding through the Inter-American Development Bank. President of Fairway Developments Ltd, David Staples, gave this assurance last night while speaking on a panel discussion on the topic “Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions to the Movement of People and Business in CARICOM” at the Tom Adams Financial Centre, Church Village, the City. Read more 2-4-2013 ||Solar Farm To Produce Brilliant Energy Solutions The official groundbreaking for a 5-acre Solar Farm is a testimony to Government’s commitment to addressing the energy challenges currently faced. This was noted by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy Lenrick Lake in his welcoming remarks on Wednesday March 27, 2013 at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport. This initiative is a joint venture between the Governments of the St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Read more
