The region is just about to start using wind power on a large scale, the first wind farms have been implemented. Read more IRENA receiving project funding applications until 12 January IRENA is welcoming online applications with project summaries for concessional loans worth USD 50 million from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) to facilitate Renewable Energy projects in developing countries, in the first of seven funding cycles totalling USD 350 million. Renewable Energy projects must be government-led or government-guaranteed. Read more
Is Barbados ready to save foreign exchange by pursuing an aggressive renewable energy policy? On November 23, 2012 the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) announced the beginning of a consultation on a proposal of Barbados Light & Power (BL&P), to change the conditions under which small producers of Renewable Energy (Solar/Wind) could feed energy into the grid and be compensated for energy in excess of the needs of the producer/ consumer. 22-12-2012 ||Lament Over Lack Of Seriousness for Renewable Energy in Antigua & Barbuda The Business Alliance represents the Hotels & Tourist Association, the Airline Association, the Employers Federation, the Tour Operators Association, and the Cruise Tourism Association. It has described the cost of electricity as prohibitive, and questioned the efficiency of the plants that have been supplying the country with power. Read more 14-12-2012 ||Caribbean Islands Find Economic Advantages in Sustainable Energy Barbados, for example, has spent an estimated four million dollars on oil imports in 2011, equal to six percent of its gross domestic product (GDP). This amount has had a direct negative impact on direct production costs and the overall competitiveness of the Barbadian economy. Read more 12-12-2012 ||Fair Trading Commission in Barbados RENEWABLE ENERGY RIDER Consultation The Fair Trading Commission has a consultation paper out on the results from the Renewable Energy Rider pilot study and the arrangements for the future.During the two year period of the pilot scheme only 25 customers joined up and has called into question the attractiveness of the scheme. Read more 11-12-2012 ||Scotiabank Jamaica introduces energy loan calculator Scotiabank’s energy loan customers can now determine potential loan payments, based on consumption, online. The financial institution launched its innovative SmartEnergy Calculator on Thursday at its Constant Spring Financial Centre. The nifty energy loan calculator complements the Bank’s SmartEnergy Loan available to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and householders to fund Energy Efficiency projects that will help the environment and cut energy costs.. Read more 10-12-2012 ||The Office of Utility Regulation in Jamaica suspends unsolicited proposal for renewable energy The Office of Utilities Regulation, OUR, has shed light on its decision to suspend the non-competitive process for the procurement of electricity from renewable sources. Director-general of the OUR, Zia Mian says the agency will not be accepting any unsolicited proposals as it would not be feasible at this time. Read more 7-12-2012 ||Barbados to receive EU aid for human resource, renewable energy initiatives The European Union is to provide Euro 40 million (One Euro= US$1.29) in new financial grant assistance to Barbados for human resource development and renewable energy initiatives. Under the first phase of the project, 48 LED street lights will replace the 250W High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street lights currently being used. The new LED lights are expected to be as much as 60 percent more efficient.
