Guyana,EU inks GUY$7.1B sugar, Renewable Energy pacts Guyana and the European Union (EU) inked two agreements totaling GUY$7.1B (Euro 27.4M) for the local sugar industry and the establishment of a hydropower plant. The first agreement will see the development of a micro hydro power system at Kato in Region 8. Read more

Read more 1-5-2012 ||ESA Renewables executes Letter of Intent for 24MW Solar project in Jamaica Solar Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) provider, ESA has agreed to design, construct, commission, monitor and provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for a 24MW DC project at the proposed premises in Jamaica. ESA will also assist in securing all permits and other legal requirements for the system as well as conduct all required assessments and related studies for the system as needed. Read more 1-5-2012 ||Opportunities for Waste-to-Energy in Jamaica On the waste to energy initiative, Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), Hon. Julian Robinson, points to the huge amount of waste generated annually on the largest of the eight waste disposal sites in the country, the 100-acre Riverton Landfill. Read more 1-5-2012 ||Millions in Wind Energy project The PetroCaribe Development Fund (PCDF) and Wigton Windfarm Limited (Wigton) will be investing several million dollars in funding and training as part of a Renewable Energy initiative at the Munro College in St. Elizabeth. The initiative will see the PetroCaribe Development Fund investing approximately $7.7 million to rehabilitate the school’s 225 kilowatts (kW) wind turbine while Wigton will assist the school in providing technical assistance and training for fourth and fifth form students in the theory and practice of renewable energy, including the installation and maintenance of the requisite technologies. 14-5-2012 ||NSWMA launches plastic separation project The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is undertaking a pilot project on the separation of plastic containers in three communities in the Corporate Area. The initiative got underway on May 1 in Havendale, Karachi and Whitfield Town in Kingston and over the next six months, residents will be encouraged to separate plastic containers from their regular household waste. 8-5-2012 ||Launch of the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Programme in Jamaica The Government of Jamaica has received financing in the amount of a loan of US$20 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and it intends to apply part of the proceeds for the payments for goods, works, related services and consulting services to be procured under the project Energy Efficiency and Conservation Loan Programme. Read more 5-5-2012 ||Caribbean to access $10.6 million in Climate Change financing through IDB The Caribbean Regional Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR) is a collaborative effort between six participating countries—Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent, each with its own national program and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center serving as a Focal Point for the regional track of activities. Lessons learned from CIF-funded projects will be disseminated to other non-participating countries in the region. Read more 4-5-2012 ||Country to save $40 Million annually with LED fixtures The country could see a reduction of some 20 per cent in the national electricity bill or $40 million annually for street lights, with the installation of energy saving Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures across the island, under a pilot project. Read more 3-5-2012 ||Jamaican Government agencies urged to cut energy costs He implored heads of agencies, ministries and other public-sector institutions to examine the findings of the audit report and to determine their next step. He noted the Government had access to the electricity bills of every government agency and would be monitoring usage. He challenged ministers and permanent secretaries, especially, to develop and implement an energy-efficiency road map and to set targets for their energy consumption.
