Jerome Fitzgerald, the minister of education, this week applauded the move at the Westridge-based school, adding: “Tambearly students should be extremely proud to be the first school in New Providence to install significant solar power. Read more 10-5-2013 || Solar Rooftop Project (St. Kitts and Nevis) The Ministry of Energy is in the final stages of implementing a solar rooftop project that could almost completely eliminate electricity costs. Permanent Secretary, Lenrick Lake told ZIZ that this project would do the most good to persons who burn less than 250 units a month. Read more 6-5-2013 || Effective, Inexpensive Concrete Made with Ash from Olive Residue The concrete manufacturing process.University of Granada researchers have successfully manufactured self-compacting concrete using ash from the combustion of olive pruning residue pellets. Due to its plasticity and cohesion, this type of concrete needs no compaction when used in construction and has many advantages over conventional concrete, resulting in considerable savings of time and money. Read more 2-5-2013 || Hydropower in Guyana: Shrouded in Secrecy Guyanese have long dreamed of harnessing their powerful rivers for hydroelectricity. Instead, they rely on imported oil for intermittent and expensive power. Now the government wants to move forward with an $840m project at Amaila Falls, deep in the forested interior. At full capacity of 165MW, it could supply more power than Guyana’s present needs. Read more
