I

n August 2009, I packed my car with my cat, some clothes and a few memories to make the five-hour trek from Asheville, North Carolina to my new home on Hilton Head Island. I had done the impossible (at least in my mind); I had successfully scored the job of ad designer for CH2/CB2 magazine. (Please hold your applause until the end.) During the second callback interview, I was introduced to my co-workers and thus, only friends on this island. About five minutes after the meeting started, I met Maggie Washo, my new boss. She was “fashionably late” to the interview and gracefully laughed it off. Given that I was so overwhelmed with finally finding a REAL job, I focused less on the people and more on presenting the perfect little graphic designer for this perfect little magazine. However, as I completed my first day at work, I realized how much of an intimidating, powerhouse, Maggie is. She has a presence that commands your attention, and her intellect is so obvious, it quickly puts you in your place—but in a nice way. Case in point, I never actually walked into her office or had much conversation with her in my first year. That all changed during my second year with CH2, as we all moved offices, and I was conveniently placed right outside of Maggie’s space. Let’s call this the first steppingstone in our friendship. Since that time, I have become the art director of this amazing magazine, and I have gotten to know Maggie on a more personal level. The respect I have for her is immeasurable. Believe me when I say that she sleeps, eats, breaths, LIVES this magazine. Her determination and hunger for learning is what has made this magazine what it is today. She is also the driving force towards success and inspiration behind many of the CH2 employees.

OUR FEARLESS LEADER

So as you look over the women in business issue, please take a minute to appreciate all of these amazing women who are breaking the glass ceiling. And when you come across the CH2 profile, notice the one woman up front. She is the one who made all of this possible. Meet Maggie Washo (watch out she is intimidating and wicked smart).

PALMETTO CABINET STUDIO

Name: Ashley Avery & Arlene Williams Business Name: Palmetto Cabinet Studio Area of Expertise: Fine Cabinetry The women of Palmetto Cabinet Studio share a passion for design and work together to bring fresh ideas and fine designs to Lowcountry homeowners. Arlene Williams is the senior designer and has worked in the construction and design field on Hilton Head Island for nearly 20 years. Williams has won numerous awards as an associate member of the Homebuilder’s

Association for “Best Kitchen” and “Best Bath.” Her work has been featured in regional publications as well as cabinet manufacturer brochures. Williams believes your home should be a reflection of your personal style and the way you live; she creates designs that perfectly balance form and function. She also enjoys looking toward and contributing to future design trends. Ashley Avery was born and raised in Chicago and has worked in high-end residential design since 2010. She received her degree in interior design, specializing in kitchen and bath, from William Riley Harper

College. Avery was honored as one of 30 up and coming young designers to watch in 2013 as the recipient of the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s “30 Under 30” award. Avery was raised on her grandparents’ farmland, which explains why her favorite style of design has a modern edge with vintage charm. She enjoys blending the classic Lowcountry style with a contemporary twist. 29 Plantation Park Drive, Suite 802 Bluffton, SC 843-815-5505 www.plamettocabinetstudio.com

Name: Christina Dzendzel & Blake Schmid Business Name: Coastal Bliss Area of Expertise: Women’s Fashion Who says friends and business don’t mix? Blake Schmid and Christina Dzendzel, who grew up as neighbors on Hilton Head Island, are defying the odds. After graduating from Hilton Head Island High School, Blake attended Clemson University, where she studied communications. Christina studied interior design at Savannah College of Art and Design. Back on the island, degrees in hand, they went to work in separate industries. When they combined their talents and interests with a mutual love of fashion and shopping their dream was launched. Joining forces to open Coastal Bliss, a women’s clothing boutique, Blake and Christina hand pick each item for the store and pride themselves on finding unique clothes for the everyday fashionable woman. Growing rapidly in their first two years, they have recently expanded and moved to the new Shelter Cove Towne Centre. Coastal Bliss offers an eclectic mix of fashionable clothing, bright colors, bold accessories, and playful gifts. Blake and Christina believe that stylish women’s fashion should be available to all, and they are committed to keeping the prices affordable. Coastal Bliss reveals an array of new arrivals almost daily, so you’ll discover something special on every visit. 38 Shelter Cove Ln #126, Hilton Head (843) 802-4050 www.coastalblisshiltonhead.com

Name: MJHennesy Business Name: Discount Furniture & Mattress Outlet Area of Expertise: Helping people find exactly the right thing What inspired you to start your own business? It was 1988 and I was working in Boston in a very wonderful corporate job, but I was traveling way too much with three teenagers at home. Plus, I wanted my children to have their grandparents back in their lives, so my husband and I quit our jobs and moved to Hilton Head. He went to work for the airlines, and I bought a tiny startup furniture company, and the rest is history. How many hours a week do you work, as a successful business owner? You don’t really want to know… I don’t really want to know! Every business owner knows that you take your work home every night and weekends! It is what it is—part of business ownership. Were there any books or educational resources that helped you along your path? I read books, attend seminars, and take courses whenever I can. I’ve been in sales my whole life and enjoy helping people. After starting your company, was there ever a time when you thought you wouldn’t make it? If so, what did you do to make it work? The first time was after 9-11 and the most recent was when the economy tanked in ’07. I prayed a lot! We also reinvented ourselves and did whatever it took. We started doing free in-home decorator service, ramped up our customer care and lowered our margins. I’m grateful for our wonderful customers and my fabulous staff. In your opinion, what separates your business from others that are similar? We give exceptional service in all situations, especially when problems pop up. That’s really the area that separates a good business from a great business! EVERYONE has occasional problems. We make sure we solve the problem to the customer’s satisfaction 100 percent when the dust settles. What would you say is the secret to success? People don’t generally go browsing in furniture or mattress stores for no reason, so we do everything we can to help them find exactly what they’re looking for at a great price. You only accomplish this efficiently by listening carefully to your customer and asking the right questions. Then, their search is over and everyone is happy. Much has been said on

the importance of work/life and ministry balance, and the ladies of LowCountry Community Church (LCC) are pros at making work fun and having a life outside of the office. In her role as director of missions and outreach, Benedette McGuire, weaves her passion of reaching the community and making a difference into every conversation. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with her family to Walt Disney World, spending time at the beach and/or wrapped up in good book. Where there is chaos, peace will be restored. Kore Wilbur, business manager extraordinaire has been with LCC for that last five years. With a keen eye for systems, she excels at data management and keeps everyone in “check.” If you catch Kore out of the office, she will most likely be whizzing by on a bike, swimming or running. Tiffany Coker, events director, has been a Hilton Head Islander almost her entire life. She manages to juggle a career, being a wife and a mother of three, all under the age of three. During the fall, you can find her upstate at a Clemson football game, or like a true local, at the beach.

Kim Marshall, Tabitha (Tab) Turner, and Jessie Shrieve are the most efficient members of the team, running circles around the rest. Kim and Tab assist with children (up to fifth grade) and Jessie Shrieve wrangles in the high school students (grades 6-12). With custom stages, activities and a knack for putting together LCC staff gatherings, these three keep the 21-member staff laughing. No wonder they love coffee and chocolate. Rounding out the crew is Erin McDaniel, communications director. Known as Mickey D around the office, she focuses her energy on the creation of all the church’s promo material and website, and helps with stage design. This multitasking, creative mind is currently diving deep into the details of her upcoming nuptials to Dony Pickering. Jason Best, LCC executive pastor said, “We truly are a family, and we couldn’t make it without these ladies.” 801 Buckwalter Pkwy, Bluffton, SC 29910 (843) 836-1101 www.lowcountrycc.org

Middleton has worked in the residential and commercial land planning, interior

design and real estate sales and marketing for her entire 20-year career. She was a vice president of sales & marketing at Del Webb Corporation before she and her husband Scott moved to the area a decade ago. After five corporate, crosscountry moves, they knew that this was where they wanted to settle down and raise their four children. “The architecture and the land is unlike anywhere in the country,” Middleton said, “and blending the two for my clients has been the most rewarding part of my job.” Kim Busby, a former trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, practiced law at a local real estate law firm prior to joining Southern Coastal Homes. Name: Kristin Hayrinen Business Name: HUB International Southeast Area of Expertise: Personal P&C Insurance (Home, Auto, Umbrella, Flood, etc.) I have always been a risk taker, from paragliding to scuba diving—you name it, I did it. Always traveling from one country to the next, I ended up settling in Sweden, the land of security from cradle to grave. Being in the secure Scandinavian environment, where everything is safe and virtually risk free, I understood the importance of transferring risk to security while working in the Financial Risk Management business within Europe for 15 years. Making the move to Hilton Head Island 20 years ago, I wanted to bring this sense of security back home. Ever since, I have been working in the insurance industry to help people manage their own risk. I find it gratifying to build relationships with clients, learning about their lifestyles and determining and transferring their risk. 50 Palmetto Bay Road, Hilton Head Island 843-686-0709 www.hubinternational.com

Name: Amanda Russ Business Name: Pomodori Italian Eatery Area of Expertise: Professional Ninja In my 34 years, I have worn many hats, put on many uniforms, and fit into many molds. From making sandwiches at Subway to puppeteering through the Midwest to producing racing academies for Mercedes AMG, I have tried my hand at many careers and enjoyed all that they have to offer. I had “retired from my position in human resources in Connecticut, and hoped to eventually continue that career here. Name: Dr. Andrea Grant Guess Business Name: The New River Dental Center, PC Area of Expertise: Family and Cosmetic Dentistry Best advice I’ve ever received: Never underestimate the power of setting goals. It is important to recognize what you want and how you plan on achieving it. Biggest accomplishment to date: My family. I am married to my biggest cheerleader, Vincent, and so proud of our three beautiful children, Grant, Victoria, and Andrew. Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere I can meet new people, have new experiences and enjoy life. What inspired me to start my own business: I hail from a family of entrepreneurs. My father’s parents are native to Hilton Head Island. They instilled a strong work ethic in their children. As a matter of fact, they ran multiple businesses on Hilton Head Island, from a fruit and vegetable stand to a package shop, and other service oriented businesses. My parents, in turn, have established one of the longest running convenience stores on Hilton Head Island. So, I really could not see any other possibility for myself than to own my own dental office. If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been... Biomedical engineering. I love research and genetics, so that was definitely a field that was my second choice. Favorite guilty pleasure: Chocolate. When I am NOT working, I love to: Spend time with my family at museums, zoos and amusement parks. I enjoy seeing the delight in their eyes when they see something for the very first time. 300 New River Parkway Suite 1 Hardeeville, SC 29927 843-208-2888 www.newriverdentist.com

Name: Kelli Corn Business Name: Kelli Corn Wedding and Events Area of Expertise: Wedding and Event planning, design and production Best advice I’ve ever received: “It is what it is.” I take this saying and apply it to multiple facets of my life. You cannot worry and overthink every decision, every answer, every detail; you have to believe in your gut and stand with conviction. If every possible step is taken proactively, there is a good probability your outcome will be what you hoped. Biggest accomplishment to date: I’m able to build relationships with families and even companies that are celebrating life moments, great successes and promising futures. It’s uplifting and very rewarding. I tend to be calm; I don’t frazzle too easily. I have learned service and standards from the best of the best and am proud that these practices have become a part of who I am. I also feel like my vision for design has grown tremendously over the past three years in being on my own and being free to create in new settings. Favorite vacation spot: Rocky Mountains, Colorado What inspired me to start my own business: I have a great passion for working and investing my whole heart into what I am doing. After devoting years at Dell, Hilton, Clubcorp and Auberge Resorts, I gained experiences and lessons that I am forever grateful for. However, I realized that if I built my own company, I would be able to fine-tune every detail of every event and create experiences that are truly magical. It has also given me more freedom and time to allow my passion to take over and be a part of each event. If I had to choose another career path, it probably would have been… Gospel singer. I love that big bold “hallelujah” voice in a church. Favorite guilty pleasure: Ice cream – I enjoy a scoop of vanilla with caramel sauce almost every night. When I am not working, I love to: Hang out with my beautiful children, cook dinner and enjoy a glass of California cabernet. Bluffton, South Carolina 843-368-2029 kellicorn.com

Name: Jenni Roberts Business Name: ARC Studios Area of Expertise: Graphic Design/Brand Development Best advice I’ve ever received: Never underestimate your capabilities or the value of them— which has inspired me to trust my instincts. Biggest accomplishment to date: Raising two kids that think I’m kinda cool (at least for the time being). Favorite vacation spot: The picturesque dunes of Ludington, Michigan. It’s an annual family trek. What inspired me to start my own business: A better worklife balance. My kids are 10 and 11, and I wanted to be present for as much of their childhood as possible. Having control over my schedule is key to that. Sometimes it means working at midnight, but I’ve always been a bit of a night owl. If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been... Interior design. My space has a huge impact on my mood and productivity. And, I love giving new life to my surroundings in unexpected ways. Who knows? Maybe someday I’ll shift my focus. Favorite guilty pleasure: Shopping, though not necessarily for the stereotypical things. I’m usually working on a project that fuels a mad hunt for a particular item: paint, fabric, a vintage lamp… I see it as stocking my designer’s toolbox. Thankfully, I know how to stretch a dollar. When I’m NOT working, I love to: Travel with my family and snuggle my dog Hattie (sometimes simultaneously). 843-802-4430 arcstudioscreative.com

This reminds me daily to stay the course, be consistent, and to try something new. Biggest accomplishment to date (CC and TN): We agree that starting and managing a successful company for the past 10 years is our biggest professional accomplishment, but being moms to our beautiful children is a personal accomplishment that we cherish daily. Favorite vacation spot (TN): Hawaii What inspired us to start our own business (CC and TN): We acknowledged a niche that businesses, both large and small, need: local bookkeeping, payroll and HR support. We administer these core financial and HR services so that owners can focus on their businesses. M

y only background with the military is based on my dad and three brothers, none of whom served in action. Dad said he wanted to be in the Navy, but when they asked him what branch he wanted to be in, they put him in the Army! My three brothers were all weekend warriors for the Army, Air Force and Marines. Brother Greg who was the Marine, told me he got caught eating a package of crackers, and his sergeant punished him by making him eat another package, cellophane and all! May River Theatre’s presentation of No Time for Sergeants won’t feature any cracker eating, but a warm and funny rendition of the story of country bumpkin William Stockdale who had an unlimited amount of common sense. No Time for Sergeants is a 1954 best-selling novel by Mac Hyman, which was later adapted into a teleplay on The United States Steel Hour, by Ira Levin, starring Andy Griffith. An expanded version of the play, written by Ira Levin, opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre in 1955. Griffith reprised his role, and Don Knotts made his Broadway debut as Corporal Manual Dexterity. Griffith was nominated for a Tony for Best Featured Actor, and it ran for 796 performances, closing in 1957. In 1958 Warmer Brothers released the movie version of the military play, and Griffith once again reprised his role along with Don Knotts and most of the original Broadway cast. In the fall of 1964, it debuted on television with Samuel Jackson in the leading role as Andy Griffith left to do his Andy Griffith Show. Not able to hold on to its own opposite the former No Time for Sergeants star, it was trounced in the ratings and only lasted one season. The play chronicles the misadventures of a country bumpkin named Will Stockdale who is drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and assigned to the United States Army Air Forces. Hyman was in the Army Air Forces during World II when it was part of the U.S. Army. Mark Erickson, a newcomer to the May River Theatre stage, will play the lead role of Will Stockdale. Other lead actors include Matt Dennis playing Ben Whitledge; Ron Ruckle, Sergeant King; Rob Tillison, Irvin Blanchard; Gary Ventimiglia, Pa Stockdale; Bill Andrusic, General Pollard and Vince Scott, General Bush. The show is directed by Jim Kadra, who last directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Ron Ruckle is assistant director. The show is produced by the May River Theatre Company, Inc., written by Ira Levin and presented by special arrangement with of Dramatist Play Service, New York, NY. No Time for Sergeants opens August 14 and will play three weekends through August 30, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. All tickets are $25 and are available by calling the box office, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., (843) 815-5581.

EUROPEAN WAX CENTER

B

luffton, Prepare to strut, glow, and feel fabulous,” said Cheryl Twillmann, local resident and owner of the European Wax Center, now open in the Best Buy shopping center. Founded in 2004 by the Coba siblings, the European Wax Center has franchised over 683 locations all across the United States, with the newest one in Bluffton, South Carolina. This multi-generation family has spent countless years working to perfect a high quality, natural wax product, which minimizes discomfort and provides an optimum wax experience for their guests. “We believe luxurious waxing isn’t just for the privileged. It’s for everyone who wants gorgeous skin, whenever they desire.” Twillmann said. “Our patented ‘Comfort Wax’ is made exclusively for us in Paris. Made primarily from beeswax and botanicals, in conjunction with our three-step process to cleanse, protect and condition the skin, our comfort wax is gentle enough to use on the face and body, for even the most sensitive skin.” According to Twillmann, the response from the community has been amazing. “So many people have called to say, ‘finally, we have a salon that recognizes that waxing is an essential part of personal care and beauty—one that needs experts who understand how it relates to overall skincare, and not a service to be performed as a side service in a back room.’” “No one is as beautiful as one who is confident,” Twillmann added. “Whether it is an adolescent who is self-conscious about excess facial or body hair, a man who prefers a smooth back or well-groomed eyebrows, or a lady who loves the exfoliating properties and gorgeous skin that waxing reveals, we love when our guests walk in and strut out with confidence.” European Wax Center prides itself on hiring the best estheticians and cosmetologists in the field. Once hired, each associate must complete an extensive training program, designed to ensure that everyone becomes a wax specialist, in accordance to the standards of the European Wax Center experts. The consistency in the service provided from location to location has created guest loyalty throughout the country. “Before we opened in Bluffton, one of our guests was driving 90 minutes to Summerville for the European Wax Center experience. She had been a guest of one of our northeast locations before she moved to the area and made that trip every three weeks to keep up with her waxing regime,” Twillmann said. “Our guest loyalty speaks for itself; it makes me proud to represent such a reputable company.” European Wax Center in Bluffton is currently open MondayFriday, 9 a.m.-8p.m., and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends. Reservations are recommended but not required. They will be hosting their Grand Opening Event, “Bikinis and Martinis,” Thursday August 6 from 4-7 p.m. First-time local guests will receive their choice of a complimentary service: for the ladies, a choice of an eyebrow, underarm or bikini line service; for the gents a choice of an eyebrow, nose or ear service. To celebrate their opening in a fun way, they will be featuring local musician Whitley Deputy and offering complimentary “Wow Brow” demonstrations, snacks and martinis following guests’ wax services. For more information, and a list of services and products, visit waxcenter.com. For reservations, call 844-Wax-Center.
