JULY 4TH EVENT PARKING INFORMATION
Shelter Cove Harbour July 4 event and fireworks, the largest display on the island, will again offer two parking lots available for attendees, who will then be shuttled to the event. Secure auxiliary parking will be available at Chaplin Park off of Singleton Beach Road and at the Hargray parking lot along Highway 278. Traffic will be directed from 278 to the designated parking areas, and each lot will have onsite security officers. Attendees to the event can park for free at these lots, board one of several shuttles that will run continuously from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. and be dropped off at Shelter Cove Harbour for the fireworks and other entertainment. They can then catch the shuttle upon the conclusion of the event to be taken back to the parking lots. Attendees are encouraged to use these parking areas to ensure safe and smooth entry and exit from the event. Walking or riding bikes is another alternative to avoid parking and traffic problems. Those walking or biking from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort must use the pedestrian bridge that passes underneath Hwy 278 to bypass highway traffic. Shelter Cove Harbour fireworks over Broad Creek will take place at dusk on July 4 weather permitting for the set up and launch. LIFE WITHOUT
HOW TO UNPLUG For many people, the mere thought of living without television is unimaginable. But for most of us, it’s really just a habit. And like any other habit you wish to break or modify, to succeed, you need a reason and a plan. What might your reason be? Is it that you need to find time for exercise or to go out with friends? Maybe you need a break from the constant feed of

negative news; or perhaps you are concerned about what your children are viewing. I suggest that you initially go cold turkey rather than weaning off. You can decide later how much viewing time to add back in and what types of programming are worth your time and attention. Commit yourself to a specific time period with no television—say a week, or a month if you’re brave. At first, you may feel uncomfortable and unsure what to do with yourself. You may also be tempted to fill the time by staring at a different kind of screen (computer, notebook or smartphone). Resist. Check and respond to e-mail, conduct any necessary business and put a time limit on social media. I promise, it won’t kill you. Prepare yourself mentally by making plans to get together with friends in a non-television environment. Break out a deck of cards or some board games for your family, set up a jigsaw puzzle, or immerse yourself in a good novel. Talk to someone (now there’s a novel idea!). And for goodness sake, go outside and play.

limit television viewing in your home:
. .
By the time the average American child is 18, he or she will have witnessed over 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence on television. 10 percent of all youth violence is directly attributable to viewing violent television. Over 90 percent of children say they feel scared or upset by what they see on television. Over 81 percent of the time, children ages 2-7 spend in front of the television is time unsupervised. Most parents have little or no idea what their children may be exposed to in their day-to-day media experiences. The average child spends 900 hours per year in school, yet over 1,023 hours per year parked in front of the television. Studies show that watching 10 or more hours of television a week negatively impacts children’s school performance. Children exposed to television on a daily basis show significant drops in their creativity, problem-solving ability and their reading levels. One in five American children is overweight and half of those are severely overweight. This hasn’t been the case all along. In 1965 only 5 percent of children in this country were overweight. Television has come to replace many of the activities that children participated in generations ago. Instead of playing outside, participating in sports or outdoor activities, the average child today spends four to five hours daily in front of the television. Television promotes poor nutrition and eating habits. In an average four hours of Saturday morning cartoons, your child will view over 200 advertisements for junk foods and candy. The average family spends four to five hours every day watching TV but only 35 minutes having a meaningful conversation. Now that’s scary!
GET THE FACTS As an adult, you may or may not be aware of the subtle and not-so-subtle influences television has on your daily life including your attitudes, buying habits, energy levels, food cravings, sleep patterns, relationships and self-esteem. Beyond the obvious, many subliminal messages are imprinted on your brain through sneaky, hidden advertising agenda you may never notice on a conscious level. If you have children, here are a few additional reasons to JULY 2015

Along All Joy Road, from the landing to Boundary Street in Old Town Bluffton, there doesn’t seem to be one yard without at least one boat in it, with the occasional Jet Ski and kayak. While not as obvious on Hilton Head Island, on a ride down virtually any residential street in non-gated communities, more often than not, boats share part of the yard or driveway.

two big scdnr tips Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement personnel do an extraordinary job of, among other things, keeping boaters safe and fishermen honest, while protecting the waters and land so precious to Lowcountry residents. Following are two tips from SCDNR’s Adam Henderson to keep you safe and happy on Lowcountry waterways. 1) Maintain your safety gear. The most common problems encountered with boaters are probably inadequate or missing safety gear. This can be easily be fixed prior to getting underway by doing a quick vessel inspection, making sure existing safety equipment (e.g. life jackets, fire extinguisher, navigation lights, etc.) is present, in proper supply and in working order. 2) Designate a sober driver. While all aspects of boater safety are important, impaired boat operators are probably the biggest concern. While it is not illegal to drink alcohol while boating, the South Carolina legal limit for operating a boat is .08 BAC, just as with driving an automobile. Alcohol impairment slows reaction time and inhibits the attention needed to be a safe boat operator. SCDNR will be looking for signs of impairment, so if a person plans on drinking, get a designated driver who is capable of operating the boat.

hether you consider yourself a full-time athlete or just the occasional weekend warrior, the last thing you want keeping you off the playing field is an injury. Injuries can happen to the best of us and, unfortunately, the longer you participate in a sport, the greater the chance you have of getting hurt while doing it—especially as you age. Of course that’s not to say only older players compete under the threat of a sports-related injury. Competitors of all ages run the risk of limping off the field every time they step onto it. That’s where Horizon Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine’s talented and experienced staff comes into play. We’re just like you, because we’re also athletes (and some weekend warriors, too). We understand as well as anyone how watching from the sideline with an injury can be almost as painful as the injury itself. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to utilizing the latest and most advanced evaluation, treatment, and healing techniques available to keep you in the game. Only at Horizon will you find the AlterG® AntiGravity treadmill, designed from the ground up to minimize running and walking’s impact on your body while you rehab your injuries. We have certified ASTYM® soft tissue therapists and the areas only certified IMPACT physical therapist to accurately assess and care for concussion related injuries, using the latest methods and research available. Combine with our heated resistance swimming pool to build strength and endurance, and you’ll quickly discover why Horizon Rehab is widely regarded as a world-class physical therapy facility, right here in the Lowcountry. But we do more than just treat sports injuries. We also focus on preventing them. At Horizon, we identify and address your areas of weakness, imbalance, and restriction specific to your particular sport-related needs. From our in-house, video-enhanced running analysis system to providing the renowned SportsMetrics ACL injury prevention program, we believe the best possible way to treat an injury is to do everything possible to deter it from happening in the first place. Because at Horizon Rehab & Sports Medicine, we want you in the game as much as you do. Matthew Clark, MSPT, MBA, ATC is the owner of Horizon Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.

“REAL” MOMS RULE AS DIFFICULT AND COMPLICATED AS IT MAY BE TO SHARE YOUR CHILDREN, THE GREATEST GIFTS YOU CAN GIVE THEM ARE HARMONY AT HOME AND A PEACEFUL FAMILY UNIT. REGARDLESS OF HOW YOUR MARRIAGE ENDED OR HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THEIR FATHER, IF YOU CAN FIND IT WITHIN YOURSELF TO SEE HIS NEW WIFE AS PART OF THE FAMILY, YOU WILL GAIN ANOTHER STAR IN YOUR CROWN. MAKE IT A POINT TO GET TO KNOW HER THROUGH NEUTRAL EYES, AS IF YOU MET HER AT YOUR BOOK CLUB OR BRIDGE GROUP. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE BEST FRIENDS, BUT BY OPENING THE DOOR TO COMMUNICATION, YOU WILL GAIN AN ALLY AND COMRADE IN THE CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN. REMEMBER THAT THE STEPMOM IS NOT YOUR ENEMY OR YOUR COMPETITION. SHE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN YOUR CHILDREN’S LIVES, BUT SHE WILL NEVER BE “THE MOM.” YOU RULE!
