Lesson one is to learn when to turn work “off” and your personal life “on,” because when you own your own business, there is always something that needs to be done. Lesson two is to treat all clients like a million-dollar deal because you never know when one small job will lead to something really big. Lesson three is to train every employee to be their best because your business will only be as good as your weakest employee. On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going? I have practiced law for 25 years and have been a sole practitioner for 12 years. What advice would you give to your children about running a successful business? Running a successful business takes heart and soul, so follow your passion. Look around to see a need that isn’t being met, and learn how to fill that need, or fill it in a different way than someone else is doing it. What’s your sign? Cancer Most underrated song that, in your opinion, should be a classic: “Midnight in Harlem” Biggest compliment you’ve ever gotten from a fan? One time a stranger got down on one knee and “proposed” to me at a gig. I don’t know if that qualifies as the biggest compliment, but it has to be one of my oddest. What is your favorite piece to perform? “Desperado,” by the Eagles What do you sing in the shower? Anything that’s stuck in my head! Favorite cereal? Honeycomb At what venue do you most like to perform? This summer I’ve been loving the Whiskey Room. Most requested song at shows? I want to say it might be “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” First concert you attended? When I was in the third grade, my dad took me to see Hilary Duff for my birthday. I’m pretty sure I wore bright gold pants and a blonde wig. Favorite artist? Susan Tedeschi! Place you go to get away from it all? The water
Do you tweet, gram or book? What’s your handle? I don’t really tweet or post too much on Facebook, but my Instagram is @taylorkent7. What animal do you most identify with? Definitely a sea animal; I guess a dolphin? If you got super-famous and you had to change your name, what would your new name be? Hmm … this is hard. My middle name is Lanai, so maybe that. What famous musician would you love to sing a duet with? Zach Stevens
