’m a huge believer in the process, McAllister said. “Each chapter forces you to look at what you’re doing, how you’re doing it. Are you being efficient and effective? In every one of these chapters, there are monthly, quarterly, and annual evaluations that have to be done. What it forces you to do is look over and over again at your operations, to make them better, more efficient, more cost effective. Is there a way to make your department more diverse? That’s covered. When you go on major operations, is there a way to make it safer, better?” Having the CALEA manual on his desk is the result of three years of intense efforts to rocket the Bluffton Police Department to the highest standards in the industry. At the end of March of this year, the department was granted accreditation by CALEA. Of the 17,000 plus law enforcement agencies in the U.S., only about 1,000 have received the CALEA accreditation. Looking at the overall impact of what accreditation means to the citizens of Bluffton, McAllister drew interesting parallels. “If a hospital weren’t accredited, would you go there to get your appendix out? Not likely. If you went to a college that wasn’t accredited and your grades wouldn’t transfer, who would care about your degree? Yet we’re willing to give people badges and weapons and say, good luck to you. For so long, the profession has been shrouded in secrecy. There is nothing that we do that you cannot know. You may not always understand what we do, so it’s our job to explain it,” McAllister said. “Transparency” is McAllister’s favorite word. How times have changed. Anyone who has lived in Bluffton or on Hilton Head Island for a few decades remembers the Bluffton of old. One square mile. An enclave for interesting characters. A community made famous locally (then nationally) by a bumper sticker (cars had bumpers back then) that read, “Bluffton, a State of Mind.” On the far side of the bridge was glitzy, ritzy Hilton Head Island. On the mainland side was Bluffton—quiet, relaxed a tight-knit community of independent thinkers, artists, writers, generations of families who loved the land, the Lowcountry; and all wanted to preserve a certain, distinctive quality of life.

It was also a speed trap. It had been for years. Short term rental management companies on Hilton Head included a note to vacationers, alerting them to that fact. Then came the boom. Mayor Lisa Sulka described it as a “small town growing into a big small town.” In 1993, when Sulka moved from Hilton Head to Bluffton, she remembered what it was like. “There were two or three policemen for that little one square mile. We all knew them,” Sulka said. The population of small town Bluffton hovered at about 1,000. But the dynamics of Bluffton were already starting to radically change, even before the first residents of Sun City Hilton Head, a few miles west of Bluffton, took up residence in 1995. In an attempt to control development as a way of life, Bluffton’s one mile now stands at 50 square miles through annexation. The population of greater Bluffton is estimated to be somewhere between 13,000 and 15,000. As the town government fought to keep up with the demand such growth required, it became apparent there was a struggle, as Mayor Sulka described it, “between the way things were and the way things should be” as Bluffton grew into a “big small town.” A prime example was the Bluffton Police Department. In 1998, the Bluffton police began issuing illegal tickets to motorists. In succession, two town clerks of court were found guilty of siphoning court fines into their own pockets. As an Island Packet editorial said at the time, “It is obvious things are seriously amiss.” Jump to 2006. Enter Bluffton’s new police chief, David McAllister. “The accreditation closes the chapter. I don’t know if everybody understands what this town had—untrained or undertrained officers. A court clerk was arrested. For this department to go from corruption to CALEA (accreditation) in three years ... I’d bet my whole paycheck that’s not happened anywhere else in the country.” McAllister said. He said he knew what he was getting into when he accepted the job. He felt of all his opportunities, Bluffton presented the possibility for a profound change. “(The accreditation is) a special story because this is a special group of people. It started with the citizens who said we believe in a police department and we want it to work. Then, the Town Council heard that. Then police officers wanted to provide Bluffton with something they could be proud
of. They were really excited with all the changes. But the changes weren’t easy,” McAllister explained. “This presented a unique opportunity, growing from one square mile to 50 square miles in just a few years. Here was a sleepy little town with an atrocious reputation in its police department; it was a speed trap; it had all kinds of negative connotations. What a unique opportunity to turn it around,” McAllister said. “The people of Bluffton deserved that.” When McAllister started, the department had no policies and procedures. CALEA solved that problem. “They had equipment that was, well, disgraceful at times. We had to work through all of that and do it in three years. That takes dedicated people. Not everyone who was here, when I came, is still here. But the ones who dug in, about ten of them, ended up staying and have found great success. It’s nice to work for a place you can have pride in,” said McAllister. All this new training, learning the new policies and procedures, had to be accomplished on the fly. “You just don’t close down for training,” McAllister explained. Chief McAllister could be described as a “21st Century” policeman, whether it’s training his staff or educating the Bluffton community. While the CALEA manual covers many aspects of training and things like how to achieve diversity in the department, McAllister added another level for his new recruits: history. “We really have a good time here. I enjoy the interactions I have with the citizens, even the angry ones, and try to bring them around, trying to understand the Bluffton ‘character.’ But I also take my job very, very seriously. We try to do community policing and get out and meet everybody, but that’s a challenge for us. One of those things I did is have the Hayward House teach the history of Bluffton and the area. I wanted to bring in young police officers and I wanted them to know the area. I wanted them to understand how this area

came to be and why it’s important. I wanted them to understand internally where we were going and how we were going to get there,” McAllister said. For the citizen side of things, the department’s new Web page (blufftonpolice.com) includes the opportunity to submit comments, complaints, commendations or suspicions, directly to the department. “We get a lot of feedback and anonymous direction from the site,” said McAllister. “And there is a picture and contact e-mail for every one of my police officers.” He said one of the best means of communication between the public and police officers is the department’s “instant comment card.” It’s a kind of “rack brochure” that is given out by officers responding to an incident. It includes the case number, the officer’s name, and the type of incident. It has a handy list of phone numbers, safety tips and tells about crime victims’ rights and responsibilities. It also includes a detachable postcard that a victim can mail in (postage paid), that is kind of a ratings sheet for that particular incident. McAllister said that both growth and the rapid increase in demands for police service are some of his biggest challenges. “In 2005, we had 7,000 calls for service. In 2006, we had 14,000. In 2007 we had 18,000. In 2008 we had 22-23,000. So that rapid increase in the demand keeps us busy, he said, adding, “Thankfully, it’s slowing a bit.” There was, and maybe still is, a challenge for McAllister that a chief in this neck of the woods has never had to face. It would be very easy to imagine the first time McAllister approached the town board and began to speak, “transparency, responsiveness, structure, protocol, Web site.” There would have been a polite pause (Bluffton’s traditional and well-known sense of hospitality would be apparent). Then someone on the board was bound to have asked, “You’re not from around here, are you, son?” no, he isn’t. He spent 15 years with the new Castle County Police Department in Delaware, where he worked his way up to chief. “He’s one of the first non-locals to come into this (Bluffton) mix,” said Mayor Sulka. “He’s very proud of the department he has built. Someone has a complaint, he trusts, but verifies. He defends (his staff), but he checks into it. A leader or manager of a group that has the full trust that their group will do the right thing is excellent. However, he’ll take the complaint and do a little research to make sure if it’s valid or not. He won’t throw anybody under the bus unnecessarily. I like that,” Sulka said. “He brought such a level of professionalism.” McAllister didn’t get into law enforcement in the more traditional ways, through family or military. even as a kid, he thought police work was very cool. “What struck me about the job was that for the briefest of instances, you can have a profound effect on someone’s life. In just a matter of minutes, if you do the job right and you’re dedicated to the job, it’s life changing. When I look back over my career, I can think when I’ve made a profound difference— by either making an arrest that saved someone from becoming a horrible person, or comforting someone, or mentoring them. New Castle County is as far north as you can go in the state of Delaware. It’s about halfway between Baltimore and Philadelphia and very urban. McAllister had 800 people under him when he was chief. “I definitely wanted a smaller agency under my command,” he said. He also wanted to be able to spend more time with his family. Bluffton seemed a perfect choice. His family agreed. His whole family. His parents followed and now reside in Rose Hill. McAllister said the CALEA accreditation has meaning beyond Bluffton. “From the perspective of Hilton Head, we’re at your gateway. Do you want a department that has a shady reputation or do you want someone who can measure up to the best national standards there are. People don’t come where they don’t feel safe. So that’s our contribution to everybody’s economy,” McAllister said with a smile. And as for the “speed trap” reputation? “I get that all the time,” McAllister said. “People say, ‘You just write tickets to make money.’ If you took the economics of writing tickets, we don’t make a penny on it. By the time you pay the state, which the town is now doing, you’re really left with a small amount of money. Then you factor in the gas, the insurance, the officer’s salary, the clerk’s salary to process all that, there’s no money. It’s not a cash cow. If you do policing right and you do traffic enforcement, you’re writing as many warnings as you are tickets to balance it out.” McAllister wants to change the perception of how Blufftonians view their police force. He wants people to ask questions, to hold his feet to the fire. “You should ask your police department to do that,” McAllister said. He expects it. He welcomes it. As to his being an “outsider,” Mayor Sulka may have nailed it. “Yes, he came from the outside. But Bluffton must have done something to him, because his family moved here, his parents moved here. He told me very frankly, a few weeks ago that this is where he wanted to live for the rest of his life. Well, that’s when you’re a Blufftonian. If you move here and you just have to be here forever, you’ve made the cut. That’s the Bluffton ‘state of mind.’”

inding good travel deals today has become sort of a game, and if you know how to play, you might be surprised at how far you can go. Rick Ingersoll knows how to play the game and, as a hobby, he teaches others how to play the game, work the angles and find the deals to travel practically anywhere for practically nothing.
The
FRUGAL Travel Guy Ingersoll is a retired mortgage banker who splits his time between Traverse City, Michigan and Hilton Head. To enjoy retirement, Rick travels the world with his wife, rarely paying full price for anything and often paying nothing at all. That’s because he knows how to root out the best deals that are not immediately available or widely publicized to the general public and find creative ways to accumulate airline miles and hotel points. He shares this knowledge with the world through his Web site, FrugalTravelGuy.com, and blog, FrugalTravelGuy.blogspot.com.

Ingersoll explains one of his creative methods for accumulating frequent flier miles: “The United States Mint wants to circulate these dollar coins commemorating all of the U.S. presidents, and they do so many presidents per year. I think they’ve done eight so far. If you go to the Web site for the United States Mint, you can buy up to two boxes of one-dollar coins, 250 coins per box. So if I go and buy 500 George Washington one-dollar coins, I put them on my miles-producing credit card and have them shipped to me. The Mint (read: the taxpayers) pays the shipping. I take the 500 coins down to my bank and deposit them. They’re legal tender so the bank will take them. When the credit card comes due, I pay it off by writing a check against the $500 that I just deposited in my account.” Get it? There’s 500 frequent flier miles earned basically for
the cost of a trip to the bank. “This is just one of many crazy things that I’ve done. Want more examples of crazy?” Of course we do. “I took a weekend last summer to go to a Cubs game in Chicago. First I used a free ticket to get to Chicago. While there, I went to a Bosley Hair Treatment Center, got a free consultation for my receding hairline—no charge—for which I was given 21,000 Delta Airlines miles. I also bought American Express Travelers Cheques for spending money with my milesproducing Starwood card. “What I try to do is find opportunities to combine different promotions. This one was not necessarily profitable, but it justified the trip to Chicago. I mean, I went to Chicago basically for nothing and collected over 20,000 points and miles.” Ingersoll uses his Web site and blog to help others join in on the craziness. “I use FrugalTravelGuy.com to list all the Web sites that I think are important for frugal travel people and give links to all the different airlines. I update FrugalTravelGuy. blogspot.com daily with the deals that are happening right now, the trips that I’m going on, and how I earned this particular deal or bonus. That’s the much more popular of the two.” According to Ingersoll, becoming a frugal travel person is JUNE 2009

a slow, educational process but, over time, you learn what to look for and it becomes routine. “You take advantage of the ones you want to and don’t take advantage of the ones that make you uncomfortable. It took me six or seven years to get to a point where I had a body of knowledge broad enough that people were constantly asking me questions.” Three of Ingersoll’s keys to frugal travel are mistake fares, fare wars, and credit card churning. “The first mistake fare I ever went on was to Iceland,” said Ingersoll. “CheapTickets.com priced tickets from Baltimore or Minneapolis to Reykjavík and they forgot to put in the fare. All they put in was the taxes, which were $64. So I flew to Baltimore on a free ticket, then flew to Iceland for $64, all because of a simple human error.”
According to Ingersoll, becoming a frugal travel person is a slow, educational process but, over time, you learn what to look for and it becomes routine. “You take advantage of the ones you want to and don’t take advantage of the ones that make you uncomfortable.” If you know which Web sites to look at, you can take advantage of fare wars between the airlines by knowing what’s going to happen to an air fare four to six hours before it actually goes out to the public. “I’ve been to Costa Rica and Hawaii for $200 round-trip,” Ingersoll said. “It’s almost like watching a bunch of kindergarten kids fighting with one another. Somebody decides that they’re going to up their capacity on a given route. So the other airline says, ‘Okay. We’ll fix you. We’ll go steal a bunch of business from one of your hubs!’” Credit card churning is a little different and needs to be approached with caution. Here’s how it works: “If you apply for an airlines credit card or a hotel credit card, they give you a bonus. Some of them will allow you to get the bonus more than once. Apply for a credit card, fulfill the minimum spending requirements, and then put it in a sock drawer. Six months later, apply for the same type of credit card, fulfill the minimum spend requirements and get the bonus again.” now, he is not advocating running up huge balances on these cards, and you have to be careful to take care of your credit rating. If you regularly carry credit card balances, credit card churning is not for you. Is it all worth the effort? You be the judge. T
he latest dinner party craze is not for the shy and it’s not for the conventional. It’s for those who like to experiment, try new things and throw out the whole idea of a dinner party in the first place. It’s the anti-dinner party. And it’s called flavor tripping. Flavor tripping completely changes how your food tastes. It makes everything you’ve been eating for years into something you have never tasted before. Miracle fruit, as the berry that causes the effects of flavor tripping, rearranges your taste buds to make sour and bitter taste sweet and sweet to be even sweeter. It even rearranges how you interact with your friends and family. This small berry will take the focus off of your host’s culinary skills, off of conversation about the weather and off of what your neighbors have been up to. It will put the focus completely on the food. It will make what you taste so intriguing that you’ll remember what dinner parties were supposed to be about in the first place—fun. So keep your fancy dishes in the cupboard and the gossip about your coworkers to yourself. Clear the table for a buffet-style collection of sour citruses and bitter vegetables. Have your guests try the grossest-turneddelectable combinations of food you can imagine. And then revel in a culinary treat that has been known to West Africans for centuries. Miracle fruit, or Synsepalum dulcificum if you want to be a hornrimmed show-off, is a small, red berry native to West Africa. Local tribes, as were discovered in the 1700s, chewed it before meals. The miraculin in it (a glycoprotein molecule) activates and binds with your taste buds.

People wince when they try something out of habit, but then when they try it, it’s a different story.” So far, Cooper has thrown four flavor tripping parties through Guerilla Cuisine, which he describes as ‘a roving restaurant set in the mood of collaborative dining.’ And each has been a big hit with diners of all ages. “People with open minds and a sense of culinary adventure flock to it,” he said. “It’s just swapping bitter and sour to sweet. Creams are more buttery. It’s just that sense of adventure. Sweet stuff is too sweet. Hot stuff, well, you still get that burn, but you don’t get the ‘wow, that’s intolerable.’” While flavor tripping is used recreationally, making some foods tolerable is exactly why it has been explored for purposes outside just a social appreciation.

“It’s really good to me as a layman,” Cooper said. “But it can be good for people with diabetes, because they’re not dumping sugar on foods, and they’re not introducing sugars with this berry. You may also want to keep checking in with your stomach. While your taste buds are being wowed, flavor tripping does not apply to your stomach. The odd combinations you throw at it may not be the party they are upstairs. Ask for miracle fruit at specialty suppliers or online. It is also available in freeze-dried form which has a longer shelf life than the fresh berry. not exactly new, flavor tripping is experiencing a whole new popularity. It will no doubt be turning up at a “dinner party” near you this summer. And if you’re the one adventurous enough to throw your own flavor tripping party, we have a few suggestions of menu items to get you going. Just remember though, flavor tripping is all about having fun and trying new things. Don’t be afraid of something tasting horrible or of something you dislike turning out delicious. That’s the point!

W
ith the month of June devoted to restaurants and dining out, I decided to continue the theme and give you a wine guide. Many times, the wine list How to can be intimidating to the consumer, so my job is to make this a little easier. Navigate Once you arrive at your restaurant of choice, the wine list is the Wine List either included with the dinner menu or a separate menu delivered Article by Krissy Cantelupe by the host or server. Either way, your wine selection should be a complement to your meal, not an obligation. Take time to study the list and take in all the options available. I recommend starting with a cocktail, a glass of prosecco/champagne, or even a water to allow yourself time to read your wine list. As a diner, you also want to take into account what your appetizer/entrée selections might be. If you’re at a table with more than two people, you may need to order more wine. If you are having appetizers or a salad course, you may want to opt for a white or rosé and then move to a heartier red with your main course. Or you may want to order both a white and a red and allow the rest of your diners to make their own decisions. Many restaurants include a half-bottle section on their wine list which makes life even easier. I am more of a white wine fan, while my husband leans toward red, so if we both decide on wine and one glass isn’t going to do it, we go for half-bottles. This way we can each try the other’s wine and have fun tasting the two different wines with different entrées. This spring/summer has brought many changes to area wine lists. Quite a few restaurants have lowered their wine list prices, so a bottle of wine isn’t going to break the bank. Many wine buyers have also turned to their purveyors looking for a good value, i.e. a wine that tastes great for the money; the savings can be passed on to the consumer. This way, you know you are having a special wine that may be new and different. Finally, always ask the server or bartender if there are any wine features—they usually can guide you in the right direction if you are still finding the wine list difficult to navigate. Most restaurants incorporate a training program for the servers so that they are familiar with the wine selections they carry. So don’t hesitate to ask them to help you find a great wine.

1. Before meeting the DK STYLE team, how would you best describes your style?

I think I’ve always had a good sense of style. I’ve always tried to keep up on the latest trends. My style was definitely NOT the high fashion couture style that DK Style Extreme Makeovers turned me into, but WOW was that fun! It’s amazing how being completely transformed feels.
Yay, I’ve found my nail girl! My appointment with Nikki was so fun and also relaxing! She has a great personality and is super professional and very meticulous (I think that is hard to find these days). She took her time and she is definitely an artist! 6. Lights. Camera. Pose! What was it like for you starring in a professional photo shoot?
2. Tell us about your last haircut? My latest haircut was by Danielle Keasling of course! I wouldn’t have anyone else cut my hair. It’s funny, when you are gone for 14 months and you miss your hair stylist for that long and no one can replace her, you know you also consider her to be a friend. Danielle has always given me the best cut and style. 3. You “wear” your hair every day—how do you feel about your new style? Okay. This is a trick question right?—LOL. Well, the new style was crazy, wild and my hair was definitely transformed into “runway hair.” I don’t think I could go to work this way; I probably wouldn’t go to my children’s school that way (although I’d probably be a hit with the kids and my purple hair). I don’t know how it would fly going to the park with my 16-month-old... BUT, I did go out with my husband the night of the photo shoot with my new style (orchids in my hair and all), got lots of “stares,” and lots of compliments AND really wished we were in a high-profile club in New York City.
Starring in a shoot like this was crazy fun! It gave me a whole new outlook on the fashion industry and the work that it entails. It’s not as easy as I thought it would be (but that may have also had something to do with the rock wall and waterfall). I also felt very privileged to wear the Vera Wang dress. Anne is an awesome photographer. She’s also a really fun person. She’s one of those people that you can’t help but smile at, so it’s hard not to smile at her while she’s telling you how to look at the camera with a serious pout on your face. I really feel this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience with very professional people. I have to say the DK Style Team members are “artists” and have such passion for their work. I told them they should take this whole thing on the road—something like “Where in the World is DK Style.” I think it would be so successful. 7. You’ve been Styled! What do other winners have to look forward to?
4. After your visits with our skin specialist, Tavia, how did you feel? Tavia is AWESOME. I felt absolutely pampered! She has this great sense of calm and peace about her, and she is super sweet. She made the whole experience so relaxing… I didn’t want to leave. I am definitely going back to see her.
Winners should look forward to being treated like a princess and being completely transformed. Also, the theme of the shoot! These girls absolutely make the theme come alive; it’s amazing and it’s so cool that you actually get to be a part of it.

Here’s an easy riddle to solve: What do the elegant building on the USCB South Campus and 15 kids at The Children’s Center on Hilton Head Island have in common? Answer: Hargray, the company that has been a good corporate neighbor to the Lowcountry since Miss Gertrude (Harvey) and daughter Gloria took over the duties of running the new phone company of Hilton Head Island in the summer of 1960. The Hargray Building on the USCB campus was the result of a $3.5 million donation by the company. Those 15 kids? Due to a timely grant from the Caring Coins Foundation, which Hargray started in 2003, the kids got to stay at The Children’s Center when funds were short. “I just love the program,” said Hargray’s marketing d i r e c t o r, E d d i e A n d r e w s , referring to Caring Coins. “There aren’t any fees. One hundred percent of the money goes to charity.” Andrews explained that while Hargray started the
program, it is Hargray’s customers who provide the funds by agreeing to round up their bills to the nearest dollar and donate the difference. That difference averages out to be $4.78 per customer per year. Of Hargray’s 80,000 plus residential and commercial customers on Hilton Head Island, and in Bluffton, Hardeeville and Beaufort, 79 percent participate in Caring Coins, Andrews said. Since it started, Caring Coins has donated over $1 million to local organizations. In 2007, after 60 years of family ownership, Hargray was sold to Quadrangle Capital Partners, a private equity fund that focuses on the media and communications industries. At the time, people wondered how the change in ownership would affect the company that always had a hard time saying no to nonprofit groups. But Andrews said that Quadrangle was very aware they were buying more than a telecommunications company. Referring to Hargray’s reputation
as a good citizen, Andrews said, “We knew we were being entrusted with this very precious asset. There’s a responsibility to the company, the community, our investors and shareholders to cherish it. That sounds so hokey, but there is a very different mindset when working in a small community like ours.” B u t Q u a d ra n g l e d i d p u rc h a s e a telecommunications company in a very small market. To put the size of Hargray in perspective, Andrews made a comparison. “We have 55,000 residential customers. In Atlanta, AT&T alone has over three million.” But Hargray’s market, Andrews continued, was not “Lowcountry, low-tech” when Quadrangle made the purchase. “It’s the opposite. The services, resources and capabilities available through Hargray are as good as any major metropolitan area in the u.S., he said. “Residents in new York City do not have any more sophisticated services than we have on Hilton Head.” Because exclusive agreements between cable televison companies and private communities in the Lowcountry have ended or are coming to an end, Hargray now offers traditional land line phone service, cable televison, and high-speed Internet, among other residential services, island wide. Andrews sees the elimination of exclusive agreements within the private communities as good for all those involved. “It’s a win-win. It makes us remain competitive; it keeps our price and our competitor’s price in line. It allows customers a choice. And it helps POAs with better revenue sharing,” he said. Hilton Head Plantation was the first large private community on Hilton Head where Hargray could offer a competitive service. “We can deliver 30 to 32 megabits of service to every house in Hilton Head Plantation,” Andrews said. In layman’s terms that means you could be watching an “on-demand” program on your high definition television and recording a movie at the same time, while someone in another room is enjoying a high-speed Internet connection. “That may sound like a big number, but customers are demanding more and more bandwidth (capacity),” Andrews said. B e c a u s e t h e te l e co m m u n i c at i o n s industry is in a state of constant technological change, Hargray has to invest and try to remain a step ahead. The Hargray Building on the uSCB campus was and is a model of Hargray’s high-tech capabilities. Andrews said that people understandably confuse these “hot spots” with a system that provides entire cities or large area with Internet access. “There’s Wi-Fi and there is something called WiMAX. We have dozens of clients with wireless routers at their businesses where you can get Internet access within a limited range. Those are the hot spots. “WiMAX is very much like our cell phones. It’s sort of a ubiquitous signal that blankets a particular community or city or county. WiMAX is not readily available for a few reasons. It’s very expensive to deploy. The technology is very bleeding-edge, and laptop manufacturers have not built into the computers the radio to receive a WiMAX signal. And, due to the economy, it’s coming along a lot slower. It’s sort of stalled. You have to own spectrum to be able to broadcast WiMAX. It’s very interesting [technology]. I could leave my home and go anywhere and never lose connectivity. We’re talking to various partners, to have further discussions with them to build [a WiMAX system] and ‘light up’ the island. But it’s very, very preliminary, still very far off,” Andrews said. What isn’t so far off, however, is cable service to Sea Pines. In May, Hargray began building what Andrews called the “video footprint” in Sea Pines so residents can choose cable providers. There is also the challenge Hargray faces with keeping land lines, the good “old fashioned” telephone, relevant to the company’s customers. “We’ve done a lot of research in our market to try to understand what our customers want to have, not what we want them to have,” Andrews said. To that end, this month Hargray is introducing “enhanced voice services” for land line customers. “These enhanced voicemail services and enhanced voice messaging services are really appealing, like the ability to 62

be reached on a number of devices when you are away from the phone,” Andrews explained. Another service that Hargray is very interested in is ASP, which stands for Applications Service Provider. It can be likened to “ondemand” video, but in this case it is “on-demand” software. “Say I own a muffler shop. I sell mufflers. I may not be familiar with certain accounting software or all that’s available in the Microsoft Office suite. We would host these applications on a network. You wouldn’t have to worry about upgrades, bugs or viruses or training. We will provide a complete outsourced solution,” explained Andrews. The benefit, of course, is that business owners would not have to spend thousands of dollars on software or hire an IT specialist to keep it running. Hargray would become the IT department for a small business. In these difficult economic, yet extraordinarily exciting times for the telecommunications industry, Andrews said the company is focusing on customer care and enhancing services within its market. “We’re expanding within our footprint. We’re trying to show our customers that they are the most important part of our company,” Andrews said. In the summer of 1960 when Hargray “lit up” Hilton Head Island with its first phone service, Leroy Harvey, Sr., a man of extraordinary foresight, didn’t live to see that happen. He died at 52, just months before the lines went live. His wife, Miss Gertrude, and his daughter, Gloria, went on to create what became the 26th largest independent telecommunications company in the u.S. Since its founding in 1947, Hargray has been all about implementing innovative technologies and taking care of its neighbors. The club hosts countless theme parties, such as pajama parties, toga parties and “Life is a Beach” bathing suit parties, where “any lady who walks in with a bathing suit will drink free,” he said. And not to worry, things are safe and secure. “Even on a Friday night,” said bartender, Matt Clark. “We have two security guards on and we haven’t had a single problem. It’s a really good atmosphere. I think the music has a lot do with it—keeping the atmosphere fun and lively,” he explained. Clubbers are from all over the world at Prana International and vary in age from 18 to 50. Locals and tourists alike head out to the club five days a week. “The name international has to do with the flavor of the place; you name the country and we have it. I see people here from India, Japan, Puerto Rico, Cuba... They pick out their flags when they walk in,” said Campo, who is from Columbia. Estate Planning and Taxation Let’s start with the basics:
YOU ARE GOING TO DIE. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be the one to break the bad news, but someone has to do it. Apparently, many people have not gotten the word, because only 40 percent of all Americans have wills. Moreover, according to the AARP, only 60 percent of even those of us over 50 have wills, and we should truly know better. I would venture to guess that an even larger percentage have not prepared the other basic “estate planning” documents we all should have (see below).
You already have an estate plan
The good and the bad news is that whether you have a will or not, there is a plan in place for the distribution of your assets upon your death. If you should die “intestate” or without a will, the state in which you are domiciled at death has a very detailed plan for who gets all your stuff. The problem is that the plan may not be exactly what you have in mind. In South Carolina, for example, the state will give half your stuff to your spouse and the other half to your children. Is this what you had in mind? Or were you planning on your spouse getting everything? The probate court will also select your executor, and, if applicable, the guardian for your minor children. Again, not a result you may have intended. Before discussing wills further, you need to know that some of your assets are probably going to be passed on according to directives outside a will. These include your house which if held in joint tenancy with right of survivorship will automatically go to your spouse upon 74

your death. Your retirement accounts, including IRA’s, will also most likely have a beneficiary designated and will pass on automatically to that person(s). Note: These designations need to be reviewed periodically, especially in the case of a major event such as divorce.
THE FOUR BASIC DOCUMENTS YOU NEED NOW
What you need to do, right away, now, pronto, yesterday, is go out and find a competent attorney—a specialist in estate planning, probate and trust law—and have him or her prepare, at a minimum, the four basic documents you’ll need in place in the event of your death and/or incapacitation. These include: Will. This is the document in which you will direct EXACTLY how you want your assets distributed upon your death. In addition, it will name whom you want in charge of the process (your “personal representative”) and, if applicable, whom you want to take care of your children in the event they are orphaned (“guardian”).
Do you really want to leave these critical decisions to the probate judge? Declaration of a Desire for a Natural Death (South Carolina). This document is a South Carolina statutory form which allows you to direct health professionals to provide or withhold treatment in the event you are in a terminal and/or vegetative state. Think Terry Schiavo, whose name you would have never known if she had completed one of these. Health Care Power of Attorney. This document, again a statutory South Carolina form, names an individual you trust to make health decisions for you if you can’t (think coma, Alzheimer’s, etc.). Note that this agent’s power only kicks in if you are mentally incompetent and also that your Declaration of a Desire for a Natural Death trumps your agent’s powers. Durable Power of Attorney. This document gives someone power over your financial assets, allowing them to pay your bills, for example, if you are mentally or physically unable. This is a very potent power, and you need to be extremely careful whom you designate; but without it, or a “living will” (see below), the probate court system will be in full charge of your checkbook in the event of your incapacitation.

Many people will not need a living and/or testamentary trust to accomplish JUNE 2009

their estate objectives. However, per Mary L. Barrow, Esq., a local attorney specializing in Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law, a trust can serve a number of very important purposes, particularly if you are leaving assets to a minor child or grandchild, a “special needs” individual, or someone who needs protection from creditors, maybe in a bad marriage, or needs help managing money. Trusts are also very important for tax planning (see below) and are helpful if you own out-of-state real estate. Whether or not you need a trust is an issue you should discuss with your estate attorney. Some of us obsess over “avoiding probate” but, according to Ms. Barrow, this objective alone may not necessarily be reason enough to justify the expense and trouble of establishing a living trust. This is particularly true in Beaufort County where the probate court is well run and the fees are fairly reasonable gobbledygook n. (less than $1,000 on a incomprehensible or $600,000 estate). pompous jargon of specialists. (imitating

The pure gobbledygook and outright fabrications told by politicians regarding

“the death tax” makes me want to scream! Forget whatever you’ve heard or read and listen to this: What you need to know about estate taxes is that you probably don’t have to worry about them. The estate tax exemption for 2009 is $3,500,000 per person and it is a very good bet that this exemption amount will become permanent and inflation-adjusted beginning in 2010. So, plain and simple: If you are going to pass on an estate worth less than $3,500,000 you will owe NO estate tax. And remember, this exemption is per person. Thus, if you are married, then you and your spouse, with some help from an estate tax attorney can transfer up to $7,000,000 to your children without any estate tax. In addition, there is a 100 percent marital and charitable deduction allowed in the estate tax calculation, so even Bill Gates pays no estate tax if he leaves all his billions to Melinda. No wonder The Tax Policy Institute projects just 6,200 Americans will pay estate taxes in 2009! Another important point to remember is that even though most of us will pay no estate tax, with few exceptions, anything that we inherit gets a “step-up” to its value on the
deceased’s date of death. So, if we inherit the family homestead which cost Dad $1,000 over 40 years ago, we can now sell it for the $1,000,000 it was worth at the date of death with NO capital gains tax. Now that I’ve hopefully convinced you to stop worrying about the “death tax,” DO ask the attorney preparing your critical estate planning forms for advice on your exposure to this tax. If you are one of the lucky few who are subject to this tax, there are many complicated but tested methods to reduce your ultimate tax bill.
Inheritance Tax
There is no federal inheritance tax. Some states still have one, but not South Carolina. Stop worrying!
A FINAL WORD
It certainly is possible to prepare your own will as well as the other critical documents mentioned above. I wouldn’t! Once you’re gone, there is no correcting honest mistakes, no righting of wrongs and even a clerical error can derail your plans. Find a good attorney NOW and get these documents done right.

By Keith Kelson . I have to be honest. I used to be firmly in the middle when it comes to the debate on school uniforms. Now, I’m almost 100 percent in favor of them. I attended public schools here in South Carolina, and I never had to wear a uniform. I actually would have happily worn a uniform as long as there was no necktie involved and if boys were allowed to get really, really dirty at recess. I admit that times were different back in the old days when I was a kid. Back then, most television stations would sign off at midnight and there were only three major networks. Grover, not Elmo, was everybody’s favorite furry monster on Sesame Street. The concept of 24/7 news or entertainment was not even on the horizon. It was a simpler time. Back then, a child didn’t have to worry about getting teased or becoming an outcast because he or she didn’t have the latest designer fashions. The same cannot be said today in the majority of our public schools. When I look at pictures of myself and my classmates from those days, I see no fancy designer labels. Now, there could have been kids sporting the latest fashions from New York or Paris, and maybe I was too busy drawing the killer whales to notice. In fact, I can say that I and most of my peers didn’t get really concerned about what we were wearing until we reached high school. But the majority of us natives are just naturally cool. But today you have kids forming little fashion cliques as early as elementary school, thanks to the almost nonstop advertising they’re subjected to while watching television. Kids are told daily that they must have the latest and greatest gadgets, doo-dads and clothing. Small wonder kids today are more concerned about what they’re wearing than what they’re learning. Maybe if MTV would make education as cool as the latest law-breaking rock star… Don’t hold your breath waiting for that one. I agree that personal freedoms and the creativity of individuals are important, but let’s face facts: Whether you work in an office or in a fast food joint, you will have a dress code. You will have to conform to a standard. Why should school be any different? If the parents, the school and the students involved agree on a uniform, is that a bad thing? When you have a job interview, do you just throw something on and hope that it’s clean? No, you’re told to put on the proper attire of someone looking for gainful employment. Likewise, being a student in a school, one should be about the business of learning. How creative is it to follow a fashion trend anyway? It could be argued that allowing kids to wear the latest styles and fashions is an unofficial uniform. Spend a few moments in any school and you’ll be able to spot various cliques. Thanks to today’s cookie-cutter mall mentality, most of the kids will be wearing the same “gear” on the East Coast as their West Coast counterparts with a few exceptions. Back in my day (the ’80s), the kids from the East Coast looked nothing like the West Coast kids and were proud of it. Every region had its own unique, distinctive style. The main objection students will cite when you bring up the topic of uniforms is that they feel all uniforms are drab and dull looking. That’s the crux of the matter right there. Not that they feel like drones in a Borg ship from Star Trek or that uniforms stifle their freedom of expression. They think uniforms are ugly. One solution is to fly to London’s Savile Row and have my personal tailor/fashion designer, Oswald Boateng, produce some uniforms for the kids. Or you could task the kids with coming up with tasteful, yet fashionable uniforms. Be sure to emphasize the word “tasteful.” Nowhere is it written that school uniforms have to be drab. No one would design a drab varsity jacket, now would they? Tell the kids that this is their opportunity to show everyone just how creative they really are. 78

lothing: it’s not just for nakedness anymore. What was invented to keep the ticks out and T and A covered has been around since Adam and Eve bit the apple and first felt that uncomfortable breeze. Not two shakes of a leaf later, clothing became a symbol of status. From dyed fabrics and rope sandals, powdered wigs and 15-pound dresses to Air Jordan’s and Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch and platinum rings. It’s always been about the haves and the have-nots. So much so, that people literally kill for fashion, even school-aged children. Call me over-dramatic and move on about your day or Google school violence and read the statistics. Web sites such as educationbug.org document such case studies as the effects of adopting school uniforms in Long Beach, CA, which appeared in Psychology Today in September, 1999. This study reported that, since switching to school uniforms in 1995, there was an overall drop in the crime rate by 91 percent, an overall drop in school suspensions by 90 percent, sex offenses were reduced by 96 percent, and incidents of vandalism went down 69 percent. In this particular case study, an urban area where school violence is typically higher, there was almost a 100 percent turnaround in violent acts in just four years by controlling the way students dressed. One can only imagine the possible correlation between school uniforms and other problems in our school systems such as low overall GPAs and lack of focus on curriculum. How does clothing affect GPA and attention span, you might be wondering? Well consider the effect the female cleavage has in the office environment. We’ve all experienced it, if not been the one who was sporting the fashion trend, and have seen the power of the over-exposed boob. It’s hard to focus on the task at hand when our id takes control and our minds shift into thoughts of fantasy or jealously. Conversations for the rest of the day aren’t going to be about bottom-line and budget, they are going to be about happy hour invites and passing judgment. And just think, this is just in the world of sophisticated professionals. Now imagine again what it was like, and still is like in the hormonal, self-conscience world of pre-teens and teens trying to find their place in adolescent society, while preparing for

college and a means to economic and societal placement. The provocative nature of some clothing is just one valid distraction in the school system that can be eliminated. Dress-code is a perfect way to eliminate such distractions and many schools try to implement such codes; but what about the undeniable presence of socioeconomics? Another major distraction in the learning environment is just another fact of life that, unfortunately, can be directly correlated with clothing leading to jealousy and profiling and thus leading to violence, insecurities and educational distractions. Those with money tend to say socioeconomics don’t really exist, and those without money tend to say they do. Not all children need a structured environment to successfully retain knowledge, but in a classroom where students outnumber teachers 40:1 you tell me how structured you think the learning environment of students should be. In a world where metal detectors are installed and basic dress codes are implemented to ensure students don’t decide to pack their emotional burdens into a gun-wielding trench coat, you would think structure by any means necessary would be a priority over the need for Coach purses and True Religion jeans as a form of self expression. I understand the psychological need for self-expression and the monetary concern over school uniforms, but think about the value of safety and knowledge for our future leaders and then cry me a river. By all means if your child wants to express him or herself through wardrobe then he or she can do so after school, on weekends and during spring, summer and holiday break. I think the tax dollars being spent to detect the weapons coming into schools might be better spent on the quality of the environment and methods in which we teach and raise our youth. Discipline and routine go hand-in-hand in a learning environment; save self expression for more productive and rewarding outlets like music, sports, writing, theatrics, etc. Trust me, I think Calvin and Ralph will understand and might even appreciate a higher percentage of college graduates who can afford to buy their fabulous clothes each season. It’s labeled a “private golf community.” While golf is definitely king at Belfair, the “community” part of that label is the glue that binds residents together. “Sure, it’s a wonderful golf community. But it’s a lot more than golf,” said William Thorpe, a retired orthopedic surgeon and Belfair resident. Thorpe doesn’t hold back. “We’re surrounded by a community of the most caring, educated, interesting and interested individuals that I have ever experienced in my life.” Veterinarian Will Fuller agreed. “Belfair is a very caring community. It rallies around residents. Should anything happen, they’re there, in huge numbers,” Fuller said. “The latest example,” he continued, “was when a house was hit by lightning and it burned to the ground. The community has gone out of its way to help the young couple who lived there. We’re offering anything we can do for them, any care we can provide,” Fuller said. whole community did. E-mails have already gone around providing help and assistance for the family, their children, their dogs, whatever. We’ve put them up at one of the cottages with a fullstocked refrigerator. That just speaks for the community. It’s such a welcoming environment,” Godshalk said. When Belfair was initially conceived, golf was definitely the big drawing card. The developers brought in world-renowned architect, Tom Fazio, to build the West Course. When it opened in 1996, Links Magazine called it, “the finest set of golf holes in the Lowcountry, if not on the East Coast.” Fazio also built Belfair’s East Course in 1999. But also included in the plan was a soccer field, basketball court, tennis courts, fitness center, sand volleyball court, picnic areas, and swimming pools. The idea was to provide a setting for market that not only included retirees and empty nesters, but working professionals and families. Based on the resident mix at Belfair, the idea succeeded. “We are definitely multi-generational,” said David Porter, Belfair’s general manager. He divided the residents into three basic categories: retirees, residents who chose to retire early, and business owners and professionals with families. Godshalk and her family fall into that third group. “We had come down (from Philadelphia) and spent summers and school breaks on Hilton Head. We wanted to come down and live here permanently. We wanted to be centrally located in Bluffton because we have children who go to school at Hilton Head Prep, I had taken a position at the university, and my husband travels frequently. So we needed (our home) to be convenient to the Savannah airport, too. We thought somewhere, mid-way, would make sense for all of us,” Godshalk said. What also made sense was the fact that Godshalk, with a single-digit handicap, her son Tim and husband, Bob, were all golfers. Daughter Lauren has since taken up the game. “At first, we thought children there might be a problem. Actually, it’s turned out to be a great benefit. Everyone was so welcoming. Our son is top golfer at Hilton Head Prep. He enjoys the members and they enjoy him. They have great putting contests, and Tim has become friendly with one of our young men who plays on the Nationwide Tour,” Godshalk said. Fuller fits, more or less, in the middle group. He sold his veterinary clinic in Boston and became a full-time resident at Belfair three years ago. He now practices at Coastal Veterinary Clinic, a few minutes from Belfair’s entrance, three times a week, and plays golf four times a week. “Nice life,” he said. Both Fuller and the Godshalks take full advantage of another highlight of life at Belfair, the Jim Feree Golf Learning Center. “We have two highly-talented teaching pros. Both teach in a different manner which is really good for the members. It’s a huge plus to have those guys here and the facility here. I can say the practice facility is the best I’ve ever seen. It’s been copied by a number of other clubs, like Old Sandwich in Cape Cod, a very prestigious club. Members came here, took notes,” Fuller said. “I’ve played there and I think, because of our location and terrain, Belfair’s is still the best.” Fuller has been club champion two years running, which gets him on the roster for Belfair’s very important nod to amateur golf, JUNE 2009

the Players Amateur, held in July. Many of the top-ranked young players compete in the event. Started in 2000, the inaugural tournament was won by Ben Curtis, who went on to win the British Open in 2003. “I played last year but didn’t make the cut and felt like a grandfather to some players. There is always a players’ lunch (during the event), and I said to myself, ‘I’m in the tournament, I’m going.’ One of the players, who said he was 30, thought he was one of the oldest guys in the group. Then he said, ‘I hear there’s some guy playing who’s 63.’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’s me,’” Fuller said, laughing. Thorpe, along with wife Judy, started to come to Hilton Head Island 20 years ago. They became property owners at Palmetto Dunes. But when they were looking for a place to retire, they wanted to live somewhere more private. “I really investigated. I went as far north as Wilmington, North Carolina and as far south as Miami looking at places. We looked at 20 different communities for about four and a half years. I didn’t want to commit until I knew we were sure. The more we looked at other places, the more Belfair became a source of confidence for us,” Thorpe said. He listed two very specific reasons he thinks so highly of the community. “First, the Belfair Men’s Golf Association and the events that they sponsor. I am a very bad golfer. In fact, I say that Belfair hired me to make everyone feel better about their golf game. “I have been welcomed with open arms, even by the most competitive golfers, to participate in every golf event that has gone on. I never played golf before I came here; I’ve been involved in every golf event, and I can only tell you the camaraderie and the energy that people put forth in just having a good time playing golf. Plus, we always raise a lot of money for charity, making the golf experience, for a hack like me, just absolutely top drawer,” said Thorpe. His second reason: the cultural richness of the area. “We belong to a group of people who go to the symphony and theater regularly. It’s a dinner group, so every time we have an event on the island, we all meet at Belfair [clubhouse]. These same people I golf with are instrumental in this theater and symphony group. I’ve learned more [through the theater and symphony events] than I ever could have imagined. In the past, Judy and I had regularly gone to New York City three to four times a year to see plays and other cultural events. We don’t have any plans to ever go again,” Thorpe said. Thorpe is also a pilot. Before retiring, he practiced in Missouri and, whenever possible, he would fly back to Belfair. His wife, Judy, was already there. “I tell everybody that I owned an airplane until three months ago, because when I lived somewhere else I was always flying down to Belfair. But once I got to Belfair, I no longer wanted to go anywhere, Thorpe said. “This is where we want to be.” JUNE 2009

You [kids] should do it because it’s fun.” Added Ingersoll, “My children love modeling and they have already gotten two job opportunities.” Brittany and Jesse will be featured in a new Hampton lake DVD. Prior to Tucker Agency’s opening in Fall, 2008, Patsy nimmer’s daughter, 18-year-old Jordan, was involved with some out-of-town agencies and was glad to find a professional and friendly organization closer to home. She said, “The thing we like best about Jennifer is that she takes interest in each girl, each student, and treats them as individuals.” Betsy Scavo, whose daughters Lea, 17, and Stephanie, 13, are involved in Tucker programs, wholeheartedly agrees. “It’s been a great experience for the girls. They have fun in a small, personal setting and have enjoyed local fashion shows, working on runway modeling and making new friends. Adams, who used to drive four to five hours from Beaufort to take Christine to a reputable agency said, “This location is great, whether you are in Beaufort, Bluffton or Hilton Head, and Christine has gotten a lot more work with Tucker Agency. She has done four-five fashion shows, CH2 magazine and more. now the elite agency, in Chicago, has shown interest.” Tucker, mother of seven-year-old Kailey, is no stranger to nurturing young people and has helped lead numerous talented individuals toward their dream of modeling, acting and singing. The Georgia native began modeling at the age of 13 and, like many of Hilton Head’s residents, traveled to the island for vacations. She had the pleasure of honing her skills by working with some of the top agents, photographers, and talent scouts in the industry. Yet, in spite of her knowledge and success in the industry, a common compliment shared by her many students, and their parents, is that Tucker is friendly, caring and interactive. Diana Donoslovic, 18, recently completed her final year at Hilton Head Prep, but before she heads off to Smith College this fall, to possibly pursue a double major in psychology and theater, Donoslovic will make her acting debut in Dear John, a feature film that will be released in theaters this summer and an opportunity Tucker Agency helped her land. “Jennifer is really, honestly such a good person,” said Mike Tucker. “She is always on top of things. I have never met anyone so willing to communicate and work with you.” Joey Viola, a 20-year-old studying early childhood development and hospitality at uSCB (university of South Carolina—Beaufort), credits Tucker Agency with helping him secure a role in Army Wives, a television show that is filmed in Charleston.“I drove to Jalapenos because of a job search,” he said. “I saw the [Tucker Agency] sign. I learned about the Army Wives audition and got a part.” Both Donoslovic and Viola agree that there are many facets to acting about which many people are not aware and that it is invaluable to have quality representation and training. Said Donoslovic, “There is a lot to learn and there is a lot of competition out there. inding true love has never been easy, but thanks to the Internet, looking for it has become a national pastime. “Plenty of fish in the sea”? You bet! Recent statistics indicate that 44 percent of the adult American population is single. That’s over 100 million people. And according to dating studies, at least half of them are casting their nets on the World Wide Web.
For singles looking for love, that’s the good news. The bad news is that, among the well-intentioned who are legitimately seeking prospective dates or future life partners, lurk predators, aggressively targeting the lonely under the guise of romance. Hilton Head Islander, Jacey Gordon wants to do something about it. Gordon is co-founder of a new Web service, Kiss & Tell List!, designed to help facilitate online dating safety by offering a place for people to share their stories—the good, the bad or the ugly. Kiss &Tell List! is not a dating site, she emphasized, but a positive resource for anyone who is currently using or contemplating the use of Internet dating services or social networking sites for the purpose of making romantic connections. According to Gordon, Internet dating is a phenomenal opportunity to broaden your horizons and increase the odds of meeting your match. “You may not meet that wonderful person if you are stuck in the proximity of 25-50 miles of where you live,” she said. “We want people to enjoy dating but, in doing so, to avoid those who would deny them that pleasurable experience.”
Urging common sense and caution Gordon said, “If you don’t possess ‘street smarts’ and you trust out of naivety everything someone says, you are most likely going to become a target for the unscrupulous.” Scammers are patient and will go to great lengths to snare their victims, she warns. “Someone who immediately tells you that you are beautiful or handsome or everything they want in life may be priming you for financial or physical abuse,” she said, adding that single moms are frequently targeted by pedophiles or child abusers who will do or say anything to gain your trust and get access to children. B u t I n t e r n e t f ra u d i s a n e q u a l opportunity crime, and men are being victimized, too. “Women, many of whom are coming from other countries (Russia, for example) post very appealing profiles,” said Gordon. “They are beautiful, but the 100

pictures are not always of themselves— they can be of models. They say that they are hungry. For some reason they want to come to the U.S. They need a ticket. They plead for help. Guys’ egos are stroked and they send money. The women never buy the ticket to come to the States.” People from Ghana or Nigeria are also posting sob stories with falsified information and pictures, according to Gordon. “The problem for the FBI is that these people are out of the country. It is difficult for law enforcement to intervene because they are out of their jurisdiction.”
Why kiss and tell?
Gordon, a widow, got the idea for Kiss &Tell List! when one of her early online dating experiences turned out to be an attempted financial con. Fortunately, she recognized the red flags and ended

the relationship before she fell victim to what has more recently been coined the “Sweetheart Swindle.” The more she learned about similar romance scams and other online dating dilemmas, the more serious she got about helping others navigate the virtual minefield. Enlisting the help of Web master, Ronald Baker, she began the task of creating Kiss and Tell List!. Under construction for a year and a half, the site officially launched in June of 2008. In addition to a place to share online dating stories, Kiss & Tell List! offers a full array of advice and safety tips. “A lot of this is common sense and some of it came from my own experiences—the good and the bad. I learned like everybody else what to do and what not to do,” said Gordon. But the site offerings go far beyond her personal story. Gordon has conducted extensive research to provide a complete JUNE 2009
source for online daters, including investigative tips and links to organizations that can offer further assistance. “Our Web site will serve as an online focal point for delivering information,” said Baker. “It will offer ‘one-stop’ shopping for everything you need to know about selecting a dating service as well as learning about people you may meet there.” While Gordon and Baker are aware of abuse-reporting services and dating tips being offered by various search engines and within some of the popular online dating venues, Gordon says these sources are limited by comparison to what she intends her site to become. “Kiss and Tell List! is a very necessary tool,” she said, explaining her goal to create a more centralized, more comprehensive list that covers a broad base of Internet daters, emulating an online Better Business Bureau® or Consumer Reports.

According to Gordon, anyone can post a story on Kiss & Tell List!, free of charge. Currently, she is soliciting stories from area daters in order to build credibility and expand the site. Her intent is to spread the word locally and regionally with the ultimate goal of reaching online daters nationwide. You can help by posting your story. To do so, visit www.kissandtelllist.com and look for the “Add my Story” link on the homepage. Gordon points out that the site is not a negative resource. “It isn’t only about people who are unhappy. We are also looking for people who are willing to tell stories that emphasize safe dating and positive results,” she said. Actual names, addresses and phone numbers are not allowed, but usernames and the site where you met should be revealed in your story. No pictures are posted—only a male or female silhouette. “There are people who are using false pictures, so to use an actual photo could hurt an innocent person,” Gordon explained. “Someone also could write a story that is vindictive— intentionally telling a lie to hurt someone. To combat that, we offer the opportunity for the person to tell the other side of the story.” Admittedly, it is not a perfect system. “We’re aware of people who know that they are among those who have been listed. If they are truly not good people, they can change their username. But someone else will discover this person up the line and tell the story again,” said Gordon. “There are many people who have horrendous stories to tell who will never come forward. Those people will remain on the sites and no one will know except the victims,” she continued. “We are not a cure, but we are a possible way for people to help others. It’s a way to keep family and friends safe.”

Coming this June, to a fabulous venue near you, the association, in conjunction with WTOC and Tabby Road Wealth Management Group, is going to introduce what will surely become its latest “star”—an outdoor summer movie series referred to as “Sunset Cinema.”
Every Thursday night, beginning June 18 and ending August 13, visitors and locals, alike, will be able to enjoy family-friendly movies under the stars at Hilton Head Island’s Shelter Cove Community Park. This exciting endeavor won’t even require building a new
structure. Instead, the Island Recreation Association will erect a huge, high-tech, inflatable screen, obtained through Special events network (moviesoutdoors.com), capable of projecting popular films in high definition. According to Joe Cain, special events director for the Island Recreation Association, “These movies under the stars have been popular in other communities, and we thought we should try it some time. Then Bruce Piefke, of the Special events network in Atlanta, came to us this past winter and proposed “Sunset Cinema.” So, we said let’s go for it. And now WTOC has signed on as a sponsor, so this is going to be big time.” In addition to showing a new film each week, which will be either G or PG rated, the event will also feature a Kids’ Zone with various activities such as inflatable bounce houses, slides and face painting, prior to showtime. A small fee will be charged for admittance to the zone. Cain indicated that, to date, the following three films have been selected: Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Hotel for Dogs and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Concessions such as hot dogs, popcorn, shaved ice, Coca-Cola, wine and Budweiser, will be available for purchase. The festivities will kick off, weather permitting, at 7 p.m., with the film rolling at about 9 p.m., or once the sun sets. Admission to “Sunset Cinema” will be free for children 12 & under and $5 for those who are 13 & older. Chairs and blankets are welcome. Cain added, “Shelter Cove Park has hosted so many great events. People like coming to the park and will now a chance to see a movie under the stars in the park. People are going to love it! So Thursday nights are movies in the park. CHIPPING CHIPPING
P
Proper setup is just as important in chipping as it is in other parts of the game. Once you set up properly, the motion becomes easier and more efficient. The objective of chipping is accuracy. When gripping the club, it is recommended you grip down 2-3 inches lower than a full swing grip. Shortening the club gives you more control. Your stance is slightly open (20-30 degrees), giving you a better view of the target line; weight is distributed evenly. Your feet are flared towards the target and are approximately four inches apart. Low Runner-Ball is positioned to the right of center, with the hands forward, (a limited backswing is needed because the club is de-lofted). Hands stay ahead of the club head the entire swing. Because the ball is behind the center of your stance, contact is made with the ball before the ground. This shot is used when there is limited fringe/rough and a lot of green between you and the hole. Medium Height-Ball is positioned in the middle of the stance. Hands are slightly ahead of the ball at address. The backswing and forward swing are of equal distance. Because the club contacts the ground and the ball at the same time, “pinching” the ball off the turf. This shot is used when you have an equal amount of fringe/rough and green between you and the hole. High/Soft-Ball is positioned left of center in the stance with the hands slightly behind or even with the ball. It is very important to follow through to a high finish on this shot. The bottom out position of the club will be at the back of the ball requiring a “sweeping” action. This shot is used when you have a lot of fringe/rough and limited green between you and the hole.

More loft adds spin. To increase Loft: open the clubface or play the ball forward in your stance. To decrease Loft: move the ball back in your stance or close the clubface.

Distance Wedges
Wedges are the scoring clubs and need to be hit with precision. Most golfers, hit their wedges straight but have problems controlling distance. The most effective way to control distance is by using the “clock method.” The “clock method” is achieved by taking 3/4 , 1/2, and 1/4 swings and relating them to a giant clock around the golfer. For example, on the 3/4 swing, the left arm (for a right handed golfer) would be taken to a spot on a clock resembling 10:30; on a 1/2 swing, the left arm would be taken to a spot on the clock resembling 9:00; and on a 1/4 swing, the left arm would be taken to a spot on the clock resembling 7:30. All three swings are made to a full finish. Grip and posture are the same as in the full swing. The stance is slightly open to aid in shortening the length of the swing. The ball is positioned so the back of the ball is at the center line of your stance.
Grip Position- Holding the club halfway down the grip will
reduce your distance by approximately 2-3 yards. Gripping further down the club, closer to the steel, will reduce the distance another 2-3 yards.

Tip: The distances between your three swings will be approximately 5-10 yards. To fine tune those distances, try the following:
Sand- The majority of golfers dread sand shots. This is because most golfers do not understand how to play from the sand. Playing correctly from the sand is not very difficult once you understand how. Set-Up-Just as with chipping, the stance is open to the target and shoulder width apart. Ball Position-We have all heard the phrase, “when playing
from the sand, hit two inches behind the ball.” If the ball is not in the proper place, hitting two inches behind the ball can be extremely difficult. As with any golf swing, the swing arc will bottom out approximately one inch inside the left instep. Therefore, to contact the ground two inches behind the ball, the ball needs to be placed two inches forward of this spot, which is the front of the left instep.
VERY IMPORTANT: When hitting from
sand you are not contacting the ball. You are moving sand out of the bunker, and the ball goes with it. In moving approximately 1/4 pound of sand from the bunker, with the ball on top, you need to have acceleration. It is imperative to follow through to a full finish when hitting from sand. If you stop your club in the sand, your chances for success are greatly limited.

What do you most value in your friends? Having fun. Laughter. What or who is the greatest love of your life? Would it be wrong to say my dog? [Laughs] My husband in at a close second. When and where were you happiest? My wedding in Scotland. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wouldn’t like French fries as much as I do.

Proust Interview
Everything about Ryley Hendry is bright. Bright eyes. Bright smile. Bright clothes. The Chief Operating Officer of the International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) also received her undergrad in business and has a master’s degree in sports administration from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. (See? Bright!) However, her brilliance is tempered by that which cannot be learned in books: experience and humility. Her husband went to IJGA and is a professional golfer. She played golf in college and did a season on the Futures Tour—the LPGA’s developmental tour. Six years ago, she took a position at IJGA. Today she’s responsible for overseeing the proper education and professional hopes, dreams and futures—indeed, the very day-today lives—of 150 students ranging from sixth through twelfth grade. Somehow she dismisses the challenges and responsibilities of her post with a demure smile and a shrug of her shoulders: She could go into great depth, but to what end? She is passionate about her job and her students and that’s all you really need to know. Just don’t ever be the kid who has to see her in her office. In a tribute to her stout-hearted nature (Can you truly imagine overseeing the daily care, lives, education and professional sports pursuits of 150 kids ages 11-18, some of whom can’t even speak English yet, and still maintain some level of sanity? Whew…) she still has more than enough energy to sit down with Celebrate and confront the challenging Proust Interview. Ryley’s dog, Snoop, the most relaxed Jack Russell Terrier in the entire history of the world, looks on dreamily from her lap. What is your idea of perfect happiness? I’m perfectly happy right now.
What is your current state of mind? That these are some hard questions.
What is your greatest fear? Not to be surrounded by friends and family.
On what occasion do you lie? When my husband asks if I think I can beat him at golf.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? The fact that I work too hard sometimes. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Dishonesty. What is your greatest extravagance? I like clothes.
What do you most dislike about your appearance? A. Gray hair. Which living person do you most despise? That’s kind of mean. I don’t despise anyone.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? My ability to work hard at whatever I’m doing. Where would you like to live? Scotland. What is your most treasured possession? My family. What is your favorite occupation? This one. It’s the only one I’ve really had. What is your most marked characteristic? I’m passionate about what I do. Who are your favorite writers? Any writer that has a happy ending, really. “Chick-flick” books are what I like. Which historical figure do you most identify with? I don’t have one. What is it that you most dislike? The way the economy is treating people at this moment. What is your greatest regret? Not learning another language. Which talent would you most like to have? Singing. I’d go on American Idol. How would you like to die? Peacefully. What is your motto? I don’t have a motto, but I like to laugh and have fun.
