ll the best things come in pairs. Yes, like Reese’s cups, but here we are asking you to think bigger. Think about the powerful dynamic that emerges when two people come together who fit one another perfectly. Whether it’s just a teammate to bounce ideas off of, someone to talk us down off of a ledge when things go wrong, or someone to challenge us to do more when things go right, we could all use a partner. And when those partners just “fit,” the results can be magical. Look at the Wright Brothers. It was Wilbur who did the heavy lifting when it came to research, and his “wing warping” design that allowed enough lift to let mankind chase the heavens. But it was Orville who first tasted the sky, after his brother crashed a test flight. Turns out designing planes and flying them are two very different skill sets. Time and time again, we see how one completes the other, their talents and idiosyncrasies coming together in such harmony that it creates something light years beyond what either half could do on their own. Steve Wozniak designed the machines, but
Steve Jobs made them the future. Jerry made the ice cream, while Ben took it to the streets and made it a household name. Mario saved the princess, but Luigi gave everyone’s little brother a chance to play, too. True, there are duos who work just fine on their own. McCartney and Lennon did okay as solo artists. Paul Simon found life beyond Garfunkel. And Chewbacca is showing he can get by without Han Solo (sniff, sniff). But by and large, each was vastly improved by finding their other half (especially Garfunkel). But without that yin and yang, there’s always a feeling of something missing. Without Tom, Jerry’s just a mouse. Without Penn, Teller is just a silent magic show. And without Statler, Waldorf just comes across as a sad, bitter little Muppet. The point being, two heads are always better than one. As Marvin Gaye once sang, one can wish upon a star, two can make that wish come true. Which brings us to some of our own dynamic duos. Across the next few pages, you’ll meet locals who are making their own wishes come true with a partner by their side. From all points of the Lowcountry, these are folks who have found the yin to their yang and are using that dynamic to work wonders.
