A Note from David Bennett
CHALLENGES
I
know you’ve had this conversation: You say, “Where are you from?” and they say, “_______________” (insert name of place, often not close by). You say, “How did you get here?” and they say, “We vacationed here and fell in love with the place, so we moved here.” For a high percentage of these people, it was probably to retire. And if it was to retire, it’s most likely an active retirement, including community-oriented volunteering and outdoor activities. If it was not for retirement, then livelihoods are involved. Either way, every islander who calls Hilton Head Island home is dependent on a certain level of services in order to enjoy the high quality of life associated with this special place—a place full of great stories about just how we each arrived here. These services that we all enjoy require a multiplicity of employees. So far, you’ve heard nothing you didn’t already know. And here’s another obvious point. In order to work here, our workers either need to be here or they need to get here. In other words, we all have two fundamental challenges to address workforce availability: housing and transportation.

Is there truly a workforce shortage on the island? Yes. Today there are hundreds of job opportunities posted online. That’s hundreds more who either need to live here or get here. Maintaining the status quo is not an option. Workers who have traveled to the island for decades are increasingly seeking job opportunities closer to where they live. No one wants to spend more time in traffic! This trend will increase exponentially, and our supply of workers will dwindle even more with Jasper Port activity. At the same time, Hilton Head Island businesses are demanding more employees. This is due to the revived activity following years of a sluggish economy and making significant improvements in their assets. Schools, hospitals, town government, fire/rescue, restaurants, stores…you get the idea. Addressing the housing and transportation challenges requires coordinating public and private resources. And that’s where you and I come in. Currently, property in the Town of Hilton Head Island is virtually shut out of the most significant resource available to develop affordable housing—the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit established under Section 42 of the IRS Code. It is the tool used to create public/ private partnerships between the Federal Government and private developers and investors. It is responsible for nearly 90 percent of the affordable rental housing created nationwide from 1986 to the present. That’s about 3 million dwelling units. This resource is managed at the state level by the SC Housing Finance and Development Authority, with the tax credits being awarded based on the proximity of a development site to a number of local services, including public schools. Unfortunately, the concentration of public schools in one area of our community keeps developers (who would like to build these homes) from qualifying for this valuable resource. In addition,

with development costs on the coast significantly higher than inland, applications associated with prospective developments in our area may be disqualified altogether, due to exceeding a maximum per-unit cost cap that is the same, regardless of location. Bottom line? We all need to get in touch with our state legislators and the governor’s office. To get this changed, we also need to respond during the annual public comment period coming up later this year. Sure, other ideas and programs could add some much-needed apartments and houses here and there, but remember, the Internet is listing hundreds of jobs—right now. It’s time to get involved. Transportation options must also be viewed with the future in mind. Simply widening the bridges and lanes all over the island won’t correspondingly improve the quality of life here. Nor will it reduce the job opportunities abundant along the roadways leading to the island. To return to the tranquility and pace of life here, which is a part of our identity, will take vision. Make no mistake; there are many people and entities working on repairing, restoring and improving our roads and bridge infrastructure. But the plans need to include triangulating travel between Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and Beaufort. To produce meaningful results, quicker must intersect with better, more affordable and enjoyable. Workers who do not live here should enjoy getting here, so as not to be lured by other opportunities simply because they are closer to home. The benefits must also inure to all islanders traveling everywhere within the county, making the special even more so. Can you imagine a breathtaking view from a light rail system? It is possible to find a variety of true, forwardthinking options that may keep us loving this place we moved to and enjoying the essence of our island forever.

LOVE Motherly
Y
ears ago, I used to joke that I was no one’s mother except the cat’s. That statement is no joke in that I have not carried a child in my womb, although I now have two stepdaughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter on the way. I claim no blood relation to these charming, life-enhancing human beings birthed by other mothers, but they are family by my marriage, and I love them as my own. In this sense, I am a mother and grandmother.
Similarly, I did not give birth to any of the cats who have graced my life over the past 60 years, yet I have loved them all with undying devotion. I chose to be a cat mom as opposed to the mother of human children, and while I would never suggest that one is a substitute for the other, I can say from experience that mothering an animal is a viable alternative and, to some extent, satisfies the maternal instinct to protect and nurture. Unfortunately,
I’m a baby!

] ] ] ] some women do not have a choice in the matter, and pets can help fill a significant void. In my lifetime, I have loved many cats, and each has stamped its paw print on my heart, never to be erased or replaced. In January, my cat Dixie, who shared my life for the past 18 years, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, as we pet people like to refer to the place where our beloved animal friends wait to join us again in route to heaven. She was a loyal companion, and yes, I considered her “my child,” even though there were times when she mothered me. In 2001, not long after my husband passed away, when I was struggling to make myself presentable to go out of the house, I had spent the morning putting ice packs on my eyes and applying makeup, only to sit on the side of the bathtub, sobbing it all off in a towel. (A box of Kleenex could never contain my tears. It took a bath towel to absorb the river of sadness.) Hearing my cries, who came along but a precious angel wrapped in fur. As she rubbed against my legs with sweet purrs and head nudges, I believe she understood my grief and was offering her version of care and compassion. She never gave birth to kittens, but she certainly knew how to mother. I guess you might say we mothered each other. It has come to my attention recently that quite a few mothers of human children get their panties in a wad when those of us who are not parents of human babies refer to our pets as “fur babies” or “children.” I’m not saying in any way that raising a child is as simple as having a cat, but I have to wonder why anyone would question another person’s capacity to love. The scope of responsibility is much greater with human babies, of course, but since love cannot be measured, who are any of us to judge the depth of a person’s feelings for one of God’s creatures? In March, I brought home a new bundle of joy— yes, another fluffy cat. Words cannot describe the bond I feel with this animal. He has brought me more happiness in a few short weeks than I could ever have hoped for or dreamed of. We have an unspoken agreement that I will take care of him for all nine of his lives. I house him,

AND HOW CAN ANY FORM OF LOVE BE ANYTHING BUT WONDROUS AND AMAZING? feed him, pet him, play with him, clean up after him, bathe him, groom him, teach him, and provide medical care. I treat him as my child, call him my baby, and do my best to meet his every need, just as any mother would care for her offspring—or an adopted child, for that matter. I am pretty sure he knows I’m his new “mom,” or the closest thing he’s going to get to a mama. In return, he acts like a cat: He plays, cuddles and purrs. That’s pretty much all I need or expect from him. It puzzles me when some people try to convince others that loving a pet is somehow “less than” loving another human being. How can one kind of love be better than another? And how can any form of love be anything but wondrous and amazing? Some people say that a woman shouldn’t call herself a mother unless she has human children. They might be more comfortable if I called myself a pet owner. But my cat is not a “thing” to be owned. He is a living, breathing, unique being whom I am privileged to know. I would do anything in my power to protect and care for him, and isn’t that the root of every mother’s love? If you are a better person for the love of another, whether it is a child, a puppy, a kitten, a hamster, a turtle or an orangutan, happy Mother’s Day. Article by Linda S. Hopkins

TWO WORDS: CHURRO PANCAKES If you thought the churro ice cream sandwich was something tasty, Chef Jorge Covarrubias at Holy Tequila has created a mouth watering churro pancake dish for the new brunch menu. Instead of just dusting a pancake with cinnamon-sugar, he made a crust from churro batter, which gives the dish a distinctive light and crispy crust, with a soft fluffy traditional pancake center. Served with fresh berries, house whipped strawberry butter, maple syrup and powdered sugar, it’s a plate of pancakes for the books. Other new dishes for their weekend brunch include the Chorizo Hash Fundido, a Oaxaco and Gouda cheese fundido skillet with fried eggs with roasted poblano peppers, chorizo with mojo potatoes, a little sriracha and fresh corn tortillas; and the Chilaquiles Verdes, that is a new and improved version of their prior “breakfast nachos”.
