Editor’s LETTER
ELAINE ANG-GIRAUD Founder & Editor
Happy 2013! I’ll like to thank everyone for the tremendous support for our first issue. In this new issue, the minty green comes to life as the theme colour, inspired by the Pantone Colour of the Year: Emerald. Minty green is lively, it cradles a tinge of understated elegance and is suitable as a main colour or as a complementary colour for a wedding. I’ve decided that it’s going to be a year of me focusing on my happiness quotient. Happiness, I believe, does not come by itself. Rather, one has to work towards it. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of time and projects involved in planning your own wedding, and so I’d like to share three points which I believe you might find useful. Start each day with an upbeat expectation: Life tends to live up to your expectations, so start each day. So by telling yourself “Today is going to be a wonderful day!” and it will likely turn out as you want it to. Take time to plan and prioritise: Rather than thinking “Oh no, I have so much to do for the wedding”, make a list of things you need to do to move forward in your planning. Then start working on it, beginning with the most important items on the list, while ignoring the rest for the time being. Let go of your results: Focus on things that are within your control. Worry is a huge enemy of happiness – you can’t control the weather, what people think and if every single guest will enjoy the day. So simply smile and enjoy every moment with the ones you love. Celebrate love, life and happiness!

Celebrate TEAM JOANNE HONG Partner & Creative Director It started with an idea and looking back at where it all began, I'm still amazed that this idea actually became a reality. This issue marks the beginning of many wedding inspirations and ideas. We have gathered inspiration from the latest colour trends, our love of things vintage, my crazy obsession with prints and patterns and simply because we adore pink. I am especially inspired by the endless energy of the founder and chief editor, Elaine, a level headed, brilliant “multi-tasker” who never take 'no' for an answer and most importantly whose vision for wedding I had the pleasure of shaping. I am also honoured to have the privilege to work alongside with a few of the best talents in the trade – their enthusiasm and support helped make our vision come true. This online magazine is an interpretation of what is beautiful and timeless and we hope to share again much more in in our future issues. But first, enjoy the present and this wonderful 2nd edition of Celebrate.

In this issue, I spill the beans on how it feels like to be engaged. Just imagine a tale of two lovers with the task of planning a dream wedding while they’re oceans apart - yes, that’s us. I could go on forever about the thrills and spills about couples in long distance relationships but that’s another story, for another issue. As we share with you Celebrate’s 2nd issue, I truly hope that its beautiful content will strike a cord in hearts and spark love and bliss in everyone, as it did with me. So fill your days with things that inspire you; things that make you go ‘awww’. May you continue to experience precious love in 2013.

Amanda Lee WEDDINGS’ 2013
PHO TO G RAP H Y BRYAN JEAN PH O TO G RAP H Y
IN AMANDA LEE WEDDINGS’ 2013 COLLECTION, THERE’S A GOWN FOR EVERY GIRL. As owner and designer of Amanda Lee Weddings, Amanda looks to architectural ideas, people and fascinating eras for inspiration and once it hits her, she begins her magic. It has always been known that bridal gown designers pour their imagination into their work, creating dreamy dresses and bold bodices. But in 2013, Amanda expects to see wedding trends flaunting less extravagance but with laces, textures and layers still maintaining their place as core components in a gown’s design. “A simplified version of formal elegance” shares Amanda. In her gorgeous latest collection, each dress is appropriately named to suit the right bride. View her collection at 402 Orchard Road, #02-09, Delfi Orchard, Singapore 238876. Dreamy inWhites COUTURE TRIO STEPS ONTO LOCAL SHORES FINALLY VIA INSIGHTFUL FOUNDERS OF THE ATELIER BRIDAL, MELISSA TAN AND NANCY HU. Be excited, be very excited. Ladies, for the first time ever, brides-to-be can choose from three internationally renowned couture designers of wedding gowns right here in Singapore – welcome Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Marchesa to our shores via a new premier multi-label bridal boutique, The Atelier Bridal. Since October 2012, brides-to-be are invited to peruse the exquisite showcase of gowns in 22A Ann Siang Road, home to The Atelier Bridal. The boutique features collections of fine luxury bridal gowns and also bridal accessories from Oscar de la Renta and Tia Mazza. From the first quarter of 2013, The Atelier Bridal will also stock bridal brands such as Amsale, Rivini (Alyne) and Romona Keveza (Legends), as well as bridesmaid dresses from Amsale and evening gowns from the Spanish brand, Rosa Clara. The Atelier Bridal knows what it means to be a bride and the love story between every bride and her gown for that big milestone in her life. To celebrate these elements, The Atelier Bridal seeks to provide an intimate experience in the bride's search for her perfect wedding gown. A consultation with the bride will single out the brand, style and silhouette preferred, and more will be understood regarding the wedding venue and personality before a gown is recommended. The level of quality of these gowns requires hard work and timing is important as bridal clients are required to wait approximately four months for their couture gowns to arrive since all gowns are made-to-order and hand-made. Another one month should be set aside for fitting and alterations before the final gown collection. Founder and co-owner Melissa Tan stated, “Our new partnerships with Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Marchesa will mark as a great step in Singapore's luxury bridal gowns market. We are very happy that our new partnerships will allow brides-to-be in Singapore and the neighbouring countries to have more access to international couture bridal brands.” About the Founders Nancy is 26 years old and graduated from fashion design and merchandising while Melissa is 29 years old and practising law before starting The Atelier Bridal together. The lack of couture bridal brands in Singapore at the time or their own weddings inspired Nancy and Melissa to set up The Atelier Bridal. They hope that with this new venture, future brides will have wider choices of luxury bridal gowns of impeccable fit and of high quality locally, without having to take time off to travel great distances in their searches for the perfect dress.

CAROLINA HERRERA An iconic female fashion designer, Carolina Herrera's gowns are classic, clean, and contemporary. OF A BRIDE-TO-BE
Being engaged leaves you on cloud nine, knowing that you’re someone’s one and only. It also leaves you on a madcap adventure with a ton of wedding decisions to make. So what’s it really like to be engaged? Adine Chin tells her story.
I said yes in Kyoto. That was when all the storybook fireworks and music all started. We were on a wonderful vacation in Kyoto, Japan when my fiancé, Jason had proposed during our stay in a charming Ryokan on Christmas morning. I finally had a legitimate reason to go a little crazy and dream up a gorgeous wedding! I’d get online and stumble upon all everything beautiful - pretty laces, ornate cutlery, creative wedding stationery, wondrous ideas for wedding favours... yes, everything that could make a girl happy. It wasn’t technically a dream anymore! I’m getting married! I had so many questions. What colours should I go with? Should I get this kind of fabric for my dress? Will this jar of honey work well as a wedding favour? In my head were plans to print out all my inspirations and create a mood board. That was the idea.
44 | C E L E B R A T E
Then reality interrupted my dreams. We still had some time in Japan before returning to Singapore a week later. It was back to work for the both of us and soon enough, those ideas of romancing a wedding dream slowly slipped to the back of my mind. Being away from each other all the time didn’t help much either. Our long distance relationship meant that we couldn’t physically sit down and explore ideas together, neither could we attend site visits nor wedding showcases as a couple. Being apart, we couldn’t bounce ideas off each other as easy as we thought. Nonetheless, we didn’t let all this negativity rain on our parade. It was more than a year to our wedding date so there wasn’t a need to start rushing into our plans. However we knew we had to pick a venue and engage photography services earlier than anything else. It was fabulous that we both had agreed on a wedding theme I was looking forward to everything falling into place! But I realised that filling up that theme with influences we were both inspired by, wasn’t easy. We had to manage each other expectations in many areas like planning our guest list, choosing a photography style we both liked and when it come to the colour scheme, my shade of blue wasn’t his kind of blue. We had to find the middle ground where we both could see eye to eye and not gouge each other’s out. Though sometimes, we’d glare rather than see. We are still working on this. Have a heart, we’re only human. 6 months have passed and gears are slowly shifting into place. We communicate via texts, phone calls and during online video chats, we share websites that feature inspirations that could go with our theme. Ideas that don’t really wow us in the beginning? We sleep on it. Inspirations that we may find cute in the beginning, may eventually find its way into the trash bin. It’s a process that every engaged couple has to go through. It’s important to disallow the little squabbles overwhelm a joyous event. We want the best for our wedding day and we want it to be timeless. This might sound like a juvenile thought but it feels as though it’s time we grew up and make grown up decisions as a couple. There’s still a lot more to do up ahead and for what it’s worth, we’re going to make it exciting!

COURTING A SCENE Semi outdoors or entirely indoors, there’s an array of quintessential venues available for that brilliant engagement party. There are cosy restaurants to propose a toast at, pleasant outdoor parties to bask in, and chic bars to have a glass or two! Some places we love for engagement parties are Alkaff Mansion Ristorante or Villa Halia for private dining in the gardens, Absinthe for absolutely fabulous French food and amazing service or 1-Altitude to shout out your love over the spectacular evening view of the city. Alternatively, yacht and spa parties are also growing in popularity as couples choose to kickback with a few friends to celebrate the delightful betrothal. Would throwing a bash with ONE15 Luxury Yachting be your thing? How about getting pampered with spa and wellness treats from ESPA, Aleydia or Estheva?
TA S T Y P L AT T E R If an intimate gathering at home appeals to you, engagement parties can also be casual enough for you to want to serve your own menu. As a couple or with friends, it’s time to huddle around homemade recipes and cook up a storm. An excellent menu doesn’t mean it has to be time consuming to put together. You’re head chef and you get to choose which dish makes the list. Alternatively, think about engaging a private chef to take your guests breath away with a menu of your choice. Let the experts serve as you wine and dine with your guests! We love the selection of chef and flexibility of working out a personalised menu provided by My Private Chef.

BUTTONS AND PEARLS Like any other celebratory occasion, the little sibling of wedding parties merits the need for everyone to dress up! It is important to inform your guests beforehand about your party’s theme and its venue to give them a good indication of what to wear. As host, providing your guests with outfit ideas on a cleverly designed invitation card would be utterly useful. Dress up and complement that elated feeling inside you with an equally nifty get up and shine! We always have a reason to buy a new dress, don’t we? Pick-A-Wardrobe: Fabulously stylish dresses at Coast Stunning dresses at Dress Empire Impressive range at Dress Sense Chic dresses at ASOS Stylish flair at Burton Debonair selections at Club Monaco
PRESENTS FROM US Engagement celebration is traditionally a non gift-giving occasion but don’t let the rules limit you. Wouldn’t it be nice to appreciate your guests’ attendance by blessing them with a little keepsake? Be it a jar of artisanal raspberry jam, cupcakes or sweets labelled with a Save-the-Date note or a bottle of wine, it is always the thought that counts. Good etiquette tip: Take time to send a hand-written ‘Thank You’ card to express your gratitude when you receive a gift from your guest.
Planning an engagement party should neither be stressful nor frustrating. Fill your cup with ideas and you’ll realise that there’s nothing to it. Arranging a celebration that celebrates love with very close family and friends should be filled with excitement, fun and joy. Don’t forget that you don’t have to invite the whole world to your party, just the select ones that make your world.
DID YOU KNOW ... An engagement party helps you to fulfil 3 blissful intentions: - sharing the news with future wedding guests - introducing both families and guests to each other - celebrating the jolly engagement HOW IT ALL BEGAN Original, though ancient, the father of the bride threw engagement parties, disguised as ordinary social gatherings until he surprises family and friends with the happy announcement! Winding the clock much further back, these parties were more formal and ceremonial where the bride’s father would conduct a little match making affair in the absence of his daughter. The roles and rules have changed since then and today, celebrating engagements are opportunities for besotted pairs to raise their glasses in the name of love. Refresh the senses with the milky sea-green of mint. There's something old-school and quaint but vibrant too - about the matchmaking of a gentle emerald tones and golds. Details are impeccably chosen to highlight the natural hues imbued with subtle chic – fresh flowers lush in their gathered low vases, cut-glass stemware, Alice-in-Wonderland seat settings with customised monogram and filigree motifs. The fascination with nature doesn't end there: seating arrangements utilise butterfly cut-outs perched on drinking glasses, milgrain gold-framed table numbers and you just cannot miss the adorable teapot sprouting gorgeous blooms. Vintage silverware perhaps? And a carefully curated display of rustic cupcakes held in a delicate teal tower almost reminiscent of Art Deco style. Drapery of tulle and floral for the couple chairs lends a touch of softness and echoes the livery of a wedding held in tantalising minty greens and gold. Tumble into an enclave envisioned to highlight a couple's subtle passion and timeless styling – a discovery of new textures and colours to soothe the soul and celebrate unions.

SWEET DECADENCE There's something cute without being too frothy about the dessert table. Tranquil with a touch of country-styled sensibilities, this treat for the eyes and tastebuds reminds one of a spread in elfish havens, or of lolling hills and haystacks against a backdrop of a dewy dawn. Be it a cupcake topped with gold-dusted butterflies and a swirl of cream or mini edible replicas of the three-tiered cake in the form of vanilla bean cookies, it will leave one savouring a blissful, happy moment.

SH OW- ST OPPING In its ethereal beauty, a three-tier flower-topped cake sits surrounded by its seductive counterparts. Using simplicity of layout and fresh hydrangeas to bring forth the splendour of the colours, the dessert table is an organic showcase of tantalising sweet treats.

DREAMY INDULGENCE Tread delicately perhaps, and then maybe one will pick from a tall glass bottle a crispy Swiss meringue to melt upon the tongue, or slabs of airy marshmallow to relive the delight of childhood. Ever popular will be the Parisian macarons in contrasting shades of green, chocolate and pale cream. Like a dreamy scene come true, one simply cannot help but indulge in this dessert spread of sweet selections!

MULTIFACETED
Beginnings WE SAT DOWN WITH THE PIONEER OF LIVE PHOTOGRAPHY AND FOUNDER OF LIVESTUDIOS PHOTOGRAPHY WILLY FOO TO FIND OUT WHAT IT MEANS TO DO “LIVE PHOTOGRAPHY AND HOW THE CREATION OF LIVESTUDIOS CAME TO BE. What started out as a thought became a full-fledged career and company for former IT consultant Willy Foo, a legend in his own right. Before LiveStudios Photography and the concept of instant event photography beaming on screens were even a thought, event photography a decade ago meant that usually organisers got to keep the photographs taken of guests, while guests would probably only see their shots if their photographs were chosen to be published in the media. A serial entrepreneur with a wealth of experience under his belt and a string of accolades under his name, Willy turned his photography hobby into a profession by asking a question: is it possible for event guests to see their photographs live in the banquet hall, once they are taken? The answer sparked the beginnings of LiveStudios Photography, the pioneer company providing interactive and instant photograph outputs for guests at weddings and events for up to 5,000 guests at a time. In 2003, Willy's instant event photography get-up saw him in a business suit, wiring his camera to a backpack with his laptop and programming it to wirelessly transmit pictures to the projector for a company event where he was attending as its IT Manager, and doubling up as a photographer for the night. Fast forward to today, his concept has evolved into company of 11 photographers and a team of up to 50 operational staff for bigger functions with logistical support, technological research and accumulative hours of hard work on the ground to maintain a delivery consistency of great photographs at the right moments for the hundreds present for the event.
80 | C E L E B R A T E
T H E VA L U E O F P E O P L E A S A R E S O U R C E For assurance in deliverables in instant wedding photo cards, LiveStudios Photography places great effort on team training and learning from the accumulated involvement in past events. With smart black uniforms, palpable unity during operations, comprehensive resource planning and ample back-up from wealth of experiences in events, the photographers, photo distributors, and technical team sometimes blend too seamlessly in with the professional catering staff that guests will ask them directions to the powder room. “Word of mouth becomes powerful in the business we do.” Willy was open about how the case closure rate for business with his clients are almost always at 100% as people will hire them without having to meet in person. “It's the total experience and it's more so our personality and how we interact with our guests...What makes it more memorable is the photographers and the team itself that helps to enrich the whole experience.” In the effort to create the best memories for their guests, Willy declared candidly, “We start to get injuries!” Like many professional photographers, Willy mentioned how his back, fingers and wrist suffer from straining under long-term carrying and operating of camera equipment. But like their printing machines that have back-ups, Willy strives to create strength in their repertoire of senior photographers who also remain actively in the scene making sure that newcomers are trained and up to par with their seniors within the LiveStudios family. He shared that there is always a back-up team: “We have doubles of everything, more than double back-ups of photos. This is to ensure that there is a minimum service quality that has to go out. I guess that's what people hire us for, the assurance that we can handle a large event.” GOING FORWARD Willy's expertise in IT provides LiveStudios with an edge over the competition springing up. Hedging on his knowledge for the technological side of live photography business, he has grown a tech-team that quietly manages research and development so they are up to date with trends such as the growing number of venues that can hold bigger number of guests. Photo distributors are now equipped with iPads to tag the photographs, who are in them, and where they are seated to make sure Guest A from Table X will get his photo card before the night is over. A new franchise possibility, LiveTech, is in the works for LiveStudios, with Willy heading the tech-team to create fool-proof software that other companies can leverage upon. He sets his sights upon Singapore and beyond, hoping to grow the whole industry and help deliver consistency with an easy-to-use system he will provide. Because not all good ideas can go into fruition or are sustainable, Willy knows that time is necessary in the development of new technology. “We can only be in so many events at one time… I'd rather grow the whole industry and see the industry grow.” he shared. As instant event photography becomes a norm, Willy hopes to gain fresh grounds, while his operational team continues to be enriched by experience, resources and the nerves to remain calm when problems crop up. But the best part is the simplicity of the relationship at the end of a wedding successfully covered, or an event well-shot. As Willy put it, “Everyone of our clients have become a friend.”

Some speeches capture your attention while others are bland enough to make you ponder about when the next dish is going to be served. The truth is, no one wants to sit through yet another boring speech. A good speech tells people something they want to hear: something interesting about your history individually or together or something funny. They’re all ears when you share your tiny dark secrets, tastefully, of course. WHO SH OULD GIV E THE SPEECH? Nearly anyone, although typically it would be the father-of-the-bride and/or the best man. These days it’s more common for the maid-of-honour, mothers, best friends, or the couple themselves to make the speech. Be selective about your speakers when you want your friends to propose a toast. When you’ve got an ideal person in mind, do personally request the honour from them at least 3 months in advance. Be understanding should they refuse your request - stage fright isn’t something to ridicule about. Find someone who’s enthusiastic about giving the speech and is able to do it confidently. WHAT DO Y OU S AY ? The tone of it all will vary depending on who delivers it. When writing a speech, include humour, anecdotes and reminiscences.

Wedding of Sylvia & Jamie. Photography by Tinydot Photography
For you, the newlyweds, speeches usually begin with an expression of gratitude to your parents for all that they’ve done, and thanking your better half and in-laws for welcoming you into the family. Friends are encouraged to share a couple of interesting stories about the newlyweds along side congratulatory wishes to the happy couple and showing appreciation for all who’ve helped out in the event. Saying something nice about both families is appropriate since a wedding is also about bringing two families together. So what are you going to say? Read on to find out how to write a good speech!
A TOAST IS IN ORDER
9 TO DOS 1.
Prepare Early Draft your speech; even it seems to be in fragments, as early as 2 months before the wedding. Early preparation helps in a successful delivery. Once you’ve got the points down, have a full draft ready at least 3 weeks before.
2.
Go Slow One tends to get nervous and do a speedy Gonzales. Be conscious of speaking slowly and clearly so that everyone can hear and understand you, especially if members of your audience aren’t native speakers of the language you are giving your speech in.
3.
Always Encourage Consider a double act if either one of you gets nervous on stage. Try not to steal each other’s limelight but instead, egg each other on. The important thing is that your speech has to be honest and sincere.
4.
Keep It Short If guests are hungry, their attention span is short. Once they get distracted, all they can think about is food and they’ll pay no attention to the speech. Everyone must have gone through this before! Keep it brief and punchy.
5.
Timing Is Everything The best times to make the speech are just before lunch/dinner begins or after the first course has been served. Other ideal times to begin your speech is before you cut the wedding cake or conduct the champagne toasting.
6.
Practice Makes Perfect This may be a cliché but it’s oh, so true. Practice in front of a mirror as you’d be able to see yourself and correct any weird stances or facial expression.
7.
Add Humour If you say something funny, pause for a moment and allow guests to have a laugh. If they don't, say something cheeky to encourage laughter. But don’t try too hard!
8.
Compliment Your Guests You’d be receiving many compliments on how gorgeous the both of you look throughout the day. Return the gesture and thank your guests for taking the effort to dress up too!
9.
Be Yourself and Be Confident Square your shoulders, chin up and breathe.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE A TOAST IS IN ORDER
4 DO NOTS 1.
Don’t Drink Too Much Before You never know when the alcohol effect will kick in and the last thing you want to do is make the wedding memorable for the wrong reasons.
2.
Don’t Read from The Script It can be boring to listen to someone read monotonously off a script. If you can't memorise the full speech, try at least to remember the opening paragraph and main points. At the same time, have the script in hand for quick references
3.
Don’t Go Overboard Remind friends who are giving the speech to keep it subtle and clever. You want speeches to be interesting but you also want to ensure that your friends don’t embarrass you in front of everyone you know. One bad example is to comment on how the wedding day is the start of the groom's henpecked life. Also, discussing about anyone's sexual habits are absolute no-no's.
4.
Don’t Side-Track Keeping the speech short and sweet will reduce any chance of sidetracking.
CELEBRATE’S TIP If you find that giving a speech isn’t your cup of tea, it’s alright. Consider reciting a meaningful poem, playing an instrument, sing or dance! All in all, always ensure that a good sound system is available, because it doesn’t make any difference when you’ve got a mind-blowing delivery but no one can hear you.

Gilbert is a man of classic tastes, loving all things old school and timeless great design. Now a visual historian for happy couples, Gilbert left his previous career as a fashion merchandiser and designer and launched into wedding photography in 2005 to create personal stories for his clients and in hope to turn cliché wedding industry practices defunct. Gilbert loves his family to bits and shopping remains a passion.
A return to vintage will be a main feature of each session with Gilbert. The best part of the deal? This engagement-style shoot is highly affordable at rates starting from $700 for a two-man team for two hours; it is possible for friends or loved ones to purchase a package as a congratulatory gift to couples. All photos will be edited and returned with a slideshow included.
With chic and classic images in mind, Gilbert creates engagement-style packages for couples, injecting an editorial style of pre-wedding pictures where a story or a theme is created specifically for the couple in mind, stepping beyond superfluous gowns and sharp suits to highlight the couple's own essence of characters. The couple will meet Gilbert and conceptualise their thematic shoot over a few meetings, adding details of everyday life and their dreams to their own 'storyboard'. The stars of the session also get to add their own special touches to the shoot with personal props that they prepare, creating memories that are unique to them. Gilbert hopes that by tailoring each engagement shoot specially for each couple, the photos and photography will be a lasting part of their legacy.

The team recommends that couples begin their sessions comfortably and worry-free as they look forward to a travel experience managed with their best interests in mind.
BE WANDERFUL One of the first tips Bryan, chief photographer gives to couples is to arrive at their destination a few days prior to the actual photography day to soak up the atmosphere of their vacation. On the actual day when shooting begins, the team will take you to where the locals go, visit famous monuments and will end the morning with a joyful lunch experience. After which, discover the beauty of the city found in interesting nooks and back alleys that will go perfectly with your pictures. Rest is assured as the shoot continues later in the afternoon. Excitement continues as you’re taken away from the afternoon crowds to secret hideaways. "We take the chance to find vantage points to capture the breathtaking sunset amidst the spectacular landscape," Bryan describes the thrill of uncovering hidden spots to create photographic masterpieces.

Happiness trumps all other emotions! Dina and Denis’ wedding was a mirror of their effervescent personalities, reflected through a chirpy palette of ruby reds and baby blues. The day was decorated with handmade surprises, delicious treats and a Volkswagen Camper Van to top things off. Dina and Denis learnt that planning a wedding is never only about themselves; considerate thoughts about others and respecting traditions play a big part in a joyous occasion too.

Grace and Nigel brought home unforgettable memories swaddled in the richness of robin’s egg blue and dove grey! Having loved ones around to share their joy meant so much more than all the little details that goes into their wedding. Their story truly began with those handwritten cards, overseas calls and visits that were the glue to their long distance relationship. It built the foundation of love that saw them through to their wedding day, which was as they put it, “one big party that’s worth the hype!”

Their friendship started online and during University, these housemates skipped a week of classes for some snowboarding in Melbourne. It was this winter trip that brought Lynnette and Shing Wa closer together. For their wedding, Lynette and Shing Wa went for a intimate and humble gathering, inspired by the joyful comfort of life's simplicities and ornamented with lovely surprises that warrant a double take. Mirroring their charisma, only a beautiful wedding of playful blue and delicate grey can usher in their new adventure together!

It's business, or so they say. But 4 years ago Paul went in search for a stunning lady when he heard that the same one had given a presentation at his office. They hit it off after a lunch date and they've since grown to be each other's sunshine and pillars of strength. When Paul proposed in the Maldives, Serene couldn’t find the words to say and answered instead with tears of joy. This couple's mix of cultures and beliefs paved the way for a wedding theme boasting with enchanting shades of elegance, and blessed with a passion for love.

It was an occasion teeming with ardent joy as energetic pairs, Sylvia and Jamie threw a party for the people they love! A tasty dessert spread was laid to pique appetites and a barrel of entertainment was staged to wash it all down in a bash themed in sophisticated grey and dulcet champagne. But as night dawns, a deeper emotion finds comfort in the day's joviality - a promise devoted to a lifetime of companionship and love.

A D A M S TA M E N K O V I C ’ S 8 T O P T I P S T O H E L P Y O U C H O O S E T H E RIGHT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER. Choosing a photographer isn’t as easy as identifying the prettiest portfolio in your price range - you’ve got to do your homework if you want wedding photos of a certain quality. Here are 8 things to keep in mind while looking for a photographer. SEE THE LIGHT It’s easy to achieve dreamy photographs at a garden wedding. However, if photographer’s portfolio contains only glowy outdoor shots, there’s no way you can be certain that his photographs taken indoors will look fantastic. Bottom line: Always ask to see photographs shot with the same lighting conditions that you plan to have at your wedding. GO NATU RAL Everyone wants to look picture perfect on their wedding, but there’s a fine line between retouching and digital fiction. The truth? Photographers who are heavy handed with airbrushing are usually compensating for a lack of technical skill. Bottom line: Look for clean, classic styles photography and good photocomposition.
of
SAY CHEESE While some posed portraits are great, showcasing too many of them in a portfolio album isn’t necessarily impressive. This might indicate that the photographer isn't able to think or act fast enough to capture the important, fleeting moments of a wedding. Bottom line: Look for a portfolio that features a majority of great candid shots, lots of unscripted emotion and details.
28 4 | C E L E B R A T E
Adam Stamenkovic is the founder and principal photographer at Bespoke Brides, a photography company that aims to capture the little details and fleeting moments that make each wedding unique. Specializing in pre-wedding, wedding day and wedding portrait photography, the company tailors its services to best reflect each client's distinct personality, style and love story.
REALITY CHECK It’s essential to understand that a photographer captures you in the stage that you’ve set. Keep your feet on the ground and remind yourself that even the best photographer in the world can't make a backyard-wedding look like it took place in a castle. Bottom line: Be realistic about your budget, venue and wedding style, and pick someone whose style compliments them all. SIN G LE OUT If you engage the services of an eminent studio with multiple photographers, be sure to find out which of the photographers will actually be shooting your wedding. Also ask to see a portfolio which he has shot entirely on his own. Bottom line: No two photographers shoot the same way. Make sure that the photographer assigned to you is the one whose images you fell in love with. TEA M U P It’s advisable to introduce your photographer to whomever is coordinating your wedding, so he’s familiar with the flow of events and better prepared to capture the day’s pivotal moments. Bottom line: Have your planner keep your photographer in the loop to ensure that he’s always at the right place, at the right time. MEET AND GREET Sit down with your top candidates before you make your final decision on whom to hire. Great wedding photography only happens when a client and photographer are on the same wavelength. Bottom line: Pick someone you are completely at ease with, or your apprehensiveness may be apparent in your photographs. QUALITY CONT ROL Make the quality of individual wedding photos, and not the album, your priority. Flashy albums with creative photo collages may look cool, but it can also hide a multitude of faults such as blurry shots or amateurish snaps. Bottom line: Hire based on substance, not style. Unlike trendy album techniques, good photos are timeless.

ESTABLISHED PHOTOGRAPHERS SAT DOWN FOR AN AFTERNOON OF NO-HOLDS-BARRED SHARING ON THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF SETTING UP A BUSINESS. The mavericks of the photography scene in Singapore came together for a full afternoon of sharing on 14 October at the National Library Singapore. Organised by the Wedding Photographers Network (WPN), the session was aimed at educating the industry newcomers with a generous dose of anecdotal information mustered from the combined experience of the speakers. The session covered the professional photography scene in weddings, travel and landscapes, events and technology, baby and maternity, as well as portraits and commercial photography. Five established photographers from the various genres - Mindy Tan, William Chua, Willy Foo, Maryann Koh and Wesley Loh - gave intimate insights into the professional photography industry, the usual missteps of beginners turning hobbies into professions, and were tireless in relating their thoughts and answering the participants' questions in an expansive question-and-answer session after their talks. The warmth of the exchange between speakers and the enthusiastic audience was evident as many avid photographers familiar with these bigwig photography outfits made full use of the chance to interact with these photographers, the creative souls and minds behind the pragmatic businesses they run. The common threads that the photographers shared included the issues of the shelf-life of being a photographer due to the demands of the nature of the work, as well as social media being a crucial point in marketing. From what defines success in a photography business, the hard and soft skills to grow one, to a humorous take on the misconceptions of laymen on how photographers spend their time – each speaker was enthusiastic and sincere, with an open honesty that bordered on being brutal so that the audience went away with a realistic sense of what it takes to go from basics to a business. A running theme for all the speakers was the hope of educating aspiring photographers such that when one takes the leap of faith from hobbyist to professional business owner, he or she can add to the resilience of the industry by knowing one's rights in an evolving and increasingly competitive industry, while remaining observant in an uncertain economic landscape.
