 These select projects are built works of existing conditions seeking design beyond renovation. The demolition resulted in the spaces remaining only shells of their previous conditions. These shells acted as the vessels for the implementation of educational theory, collaborative design with input from a team of designers, the client as well as everyday users to create fun and innovative educational spaces.

Col .legi Montserrat  The Early Childhood Learning Center is a renovated space on the first floor of the southern wing of the school: Col.legi Montserrat. This portion of the school serves students ranging in age of three to five years old. The original space consisted of a double loaded corridor with typical, age divided classrooms. The new space was designed to allow for teaching and learning within a student-centered environment with spaces and furniture that could adapt to the students’ multiple intelligences. The Learning Community is an ensemble of learning spaces, which include discrete learning studios, and three shared common areas that are zoned and differentiated for individual and team-oriented activities. In addition to learning studios, seminar, and small group rooms, there are additional enclosed spaces for smaller group learning experiences such as teacher or student-led workshops, discussion, project work, media viewing, presentation rehearsal or quiet study. The workshops are designed to guide all members of the learning community toward innovative, collaborative learning experiences.

PLAN LAYOUT The plan layout of the space was optimized for visibility for both students and teachers by removing the corridor and existing orthogonal walls and replacing them with curved walls with floor to ceiling glazing throughout most of the space. This allowed for students to move more freely throughout the space without sacrificing supervision or access to natural light from outside. The space plays with scale and nature throughout, with themes and colors inspired by the surrounding landscape: ocean, mountains and forest.

PLAN DETAIL

GODLY PLAY The Chapel was designed with specific criteria based on the school’s activity of “Godly Play”, a sequencing of activities and stories tied into the teachings of the Catholic faith. The shape of the classroom was made into a circle to allow for intimate gatherings of students during this activity. The casework was custom designed to follow the requirements regarding the dimensions, quantities and sequencing of the lessons. In order to best utilize the space for this particular learning activity and still allow the space to be used for other activities and small group gatherings throughout the day, all of the casework was aligned along the curved walls of the room and some were made mobile to be moved throughout the room or even out of the space when not in use.

FOREST PLAYHOUSE The Forest Treehouse, a nod to Barcelona’s surrounding region, was designed to address the students highly prioritized request for a space where they can sit or read in a quiet, elevated space in small groups or independently. The many components of the treehouse includes a Lego table for creative learning and problem solving, book storage throughout as well as a child-sized play area inside the tree trunk for light table activities. QUIET HIDE-AWAY

THE CAVE + THE MOUNTAIN Another characteristic unique to Spain and the namesake of the school are the rounded mountaintops of the Montserrat mountain range. This landscape feature was the inspiration for not only a climbing wall for student development of gross motor skills, but also acts as a sculptural storage unit to address the teacher’s needs for daily storage of materials and supplies for teaching and learning in the common spaces. The climbing wall also houses a small felt-lined cave for individual or small group gathering that plays with form and scale of the lounging human form.

Eden Park Elementary Pilot Project  The Eden Park Elementary School Pilot Project is the first phase of renovation for the city of Cranston, Rhode Island’s Masterplan. As part of the school’s masterplan and upcoming city bond vote, the West Wing intentionally acts as a direct contrast to the rest of the school, which is scheduled to receive full renovation at a future date. Phase 1 consists of a complete renovation of the West Wing of the elementary school which consists of the 3rd through 5th grade student body as well as developing an entrance that both welcoming for parents and students, while also acting as a protective, multi-level barrier for the safety of all those inside. The school was designed in response to the students want for views outside and access to natural light - something that was not possible due the original and aged window system that had grown opaque over time. The procession from the East Wing to the West Wing is meant to inspire a transition of a mindset as to what is possible for educational spaces. The shifting horizon of the exterior glazing and the large scale color blocking of the exterior cladding evoke a sense of play while simultaneously concealing protective barriers and wall systems that allow the school to be safe and comfortable.

EXISTING BUILDING

The renovation of the West Wing began with a complete removal of the corridors. A space used purely for transition from one classroom to the other is wasted square footage while classes are in session. The low concrete ceiling of the corridor and entry were also cut away to allow for “popups” that allowed natural light to fill the spaces with the clerestory and storefront that were put in place.

PLAN LAYOUT With the removal of the low, dark hallway the plan layout now allows the natural light from the clerestory and the exterior glazing to the interior depths of the whole soace. The layout which no longer relies on designated classrooms, grade division and teacher isolation, now allows teachers and students to work more collaboratively. The different types of rooms and variety in furniture are made to celebrate choice and the different ways in which students like to learn.

the approach - a reflection

QUIET HIDE-AWAY

The development of the exterior facade was a balance - to create something that felt undeniably “new without insulting the adjacent neighboring houses, but ultimately being a reflection of youth. The exterior cladding color palette was developed with a varity of colors inspired by and meant to compliment the natural elements found around the school. This as well as the shifting scales of the panels celebrate the renovation amongst the existing masonry that remains until the next phase of the project. The horizontality of the panels is a play off the horizontality of the siding exteriors of the surrounding New England homes of the neighborhood.

 These select projects are collections of collaged proposals that harness the existing conditions of a site and apply new purpose through the means of architectural exploration and program. The projects resulted in various attempts to develop means of representation that aided in the explanation of design intent. These vignettes of a hypothetical occupiable space allowed for experimentation and flexibilty in scale, program and materiality as well as the development of an empathetic approach to user experience.

Periphery Pier  The US | Mexican border is home to a variety of civic, commercial, and governmental programmatic conditions that must confront the realities of the international border. This division not only provides programmatic and spatial implications, but creates societal difference and hinders communication. Mapping some of these ‘Mundane Contentions’ begins to show a tapestry of new territory that is driven by exchange and interaction. Inspired by these mappings, this proposal explores the idea of a new space. A space with uninterrupted activities. A space where people have the opportunity to ENGAGE, EXCHANGE, and REFLECT. A space for those who feel they don’t fully belong on one side or the other. A space, most importantly, that must exist at the border itself.

CUADRADO  A Framework for Education + Community Rather than a fixed architectural solution, this proposal is a set of components, modular at several scales, that work to create a framework for community spaces for populations of displaced communities of refugee camps. Each 8m x 8m module, designed on a 1 meter grid, consists of a raised floor, moveable wall panels and a solar roof. The modules combine to create larger spaces to fit the needs of each situation. The modular flexibility of this proposal also lends itself to many other community-oriented programs. A few adjustments to the modular elements, and classrooms become living spaces. Living spaces easily unfold into a community market. More than just a school, we have a customizable, reconfigurable, temporal framework which allows a sense of permanence and stability; an anchor for a growing population of displaced communities.

ADAPTABILITY The interior space is similarly modular, using a system of convertible, pivoting walls that fit within the 1m grid.

Innovation Center  In collaboration with Erin Graham & Ellen Woodsbie On the edge of Downtown Providence and across the street from the parks along the Providence River sits a triangular parking lot, much like the many other parking lots that surround the area. In an attempt to utilize this space and provide more for the community than just a space for cars, the Innovation Center provides classrooms, an auditorium and shared work spaces for the public and local businesses. The building is constructed primarily of cross laminated timber with a cladding system of terra cotta tiles. The introduction of this construction type to the community allows the building to act as a beacon to testing new ideas.

Community Waterfront  The revitalization of the once industrial East Boston waterfront has primarily consisted of the purchase of large amounts of land for the construction of big box stores. The Community Waterfront is a proposal to prevent the proliferation of this type of program while still providing jobs and community activities. The project gives both the residents and the public access to athletic facilities, a public library, theater, commercial kitchen, shops and markets as well as an opportunity to have various levels of substinence and commercial farming. The terracing of the residential units allows for those living in the community access to the waterfront views without sacrificing a sense of privacy.

SITE ANALYSIS Mapping of the public and private spaces in Cathral Square based on intensities of privacy

All Saints Retreat and Spa  In collaboration with Nadine Zaza Our investigation creates a new definition of the Modern Ritual as the ritualistic obsessions of contemporary society’s modification of their body. This is a great shift from the former religious rituals that pertain to the site of Cathedral Square. Since we could no longer rely on the members of The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul’s to bridge a connection amongst the other religious spaces throughout the city in the Macro Scale mapping, we turned to our findings of the current interests of the public in the micro scale mapping of Westminster Street. Westminster, a major artery within the city is populated with public and commercial program with the intention of aiding in the physical appearance of its users.

The Crossing  The existence of borders throughout the world creates a fragmentation of land masses, cultures and families. The Crossing is a film that traces the border that exists along the United States and Mexican border. Through the use of photo montage and collage, a layering of various scales and found elements impose a different type of interaction with the border. Interaction that tells the tale of a man in search of his lost love from the border crossing of El Paso, Texas into Juarez, Mexico to the beach of San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. Only through this reimagining of the landscape, the couple is able to find one another, until the reality of the border forces them to say goodbye through the small openings of the border wall.

El Paso

W ritten & Performed by Mar ty Robbins

Out in the West Texas Town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican Girl Nighttime would find me in Rosa’s Cantina Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina Wicked and evil while casting a spell

My love was deep for this Mexican maiden I was in love but in vain, I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in Wild as the West Texas wind Dashing and daring | A drink he was sharing With wicked Felina | The girl that I loved

I saddled up and away I did go Riding alone in the dark

Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me Tonight nothing’s worse than this pain in my heart

From out of nowhere Felina has found me Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side

Cradled by two loving arms that I’ll die for One little kiss and Felina , goodbye

Clerkley Academy  Student Work led by myself and Jordan Berta. Clerkely Academy was conducted through the cooperation of Texas Tech University, AIA San Antonio, and the public transportation system of San Antonio, VIA Metro. The program was that of a tram stop on a newly developed extension of the San Antonio Riverwalk. Students did personal site investigation, visited local architecture firms, received a personal presentation by VIA Metro and spent two weeks at Texas Tech University, during which they were given full access to all studio, computer lab and shop facilities to complete their proposals. The program is a way to introduce architecture to students who have shown interest in the field. But for most, this is a means of encouragement and exposure for those who have no previous experience to college level education.

Public Plaza  The Central Falls Public Plaza was a collaborative design+build project with the Rhode Island School of Design’s organization: DESINE-Lab, students from Brown University as well as students from Javeriana University in Colombia. With the permission of the city officials of Central Falls, the group was given the task to rethink the use of the vacant lot that had been approved to become an extension of an existing parking lot adjacent to the site. The site was once an abandoned house that had recently been demolished; now, the site consists of a terraced brick plaza and walkway, a shaded pavilion and a mural, all of which were made possible through the contributions of the community and the efforts of all those who volunteered their time and strength.
