SELF PROMOTION
WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING OVER THIS SEMESTER HOW TO VISUALLY COMMUNICATE OURSELVES. IT’S IMPORTANT FOR ME TO THINK OF MYSELF OF AS BRAND, AND CONSIDER HOW I’M ADVERTISING MYSELF TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. I WANTED TO CREATE A STRONG PERSONAL STYLE OF WORK SO THAT I COULD BE EASILY RECOGNISABLE. EARLIER THIS YEAR WHEN I ATTENDED BERLIN FASHION WEEK, I NOTICED A TREND FORMING. THERE WERE A LOT OF PRINTS FEATURING STARS OR SPACE. I DECIDED TO USE THIS AS MY INSPIRATION AND BASE MY PORTFOLIO AROUND THIS MOTIF.

I DECIDED THAT I WANT TO INCLUDE MY NAME IN THE DESIGN OF MY LOGO. AFTER TRYING SEVERAL IDEAS OUT, INSTEAD OF WRITING MY NAME I CHOSE TO USE MY INITIALS FOR MORE EFFECT. MY NAME IS CELIA MARY DANN, SO I USED THE LETTERS C, M AND D. LUCKILY, THEY FIT TOGETHER WELL BECAUSE THERE IS AN EVEN BALANCE OF CURVES AND STRAIGHT LINES. THE LOGO I HAVE CHOSEN TO USE IS THE ONE ON THE TOP LEFT CORNER. THE CIRCLE REFERENCES A PLANET, AND I FEEL THE COLOURS WORK NICELY.

THIS IS THE DESIGN OF MY BUSINESS CARD. I FEEL IT EMBODIES MY SENSE OF TASTE WELL AND STICKS TO THE COLOUR SCHEME WITHIN THE LOGO. I CHOSE TO GIVE THE CARD A CASE TO ADD SOPHISTICATION, AND TO MAKE THE BRAND IDENTITY RECOGNISABLE.

Mr J Hammond 7 Pond Lane Baldock Herts SG7 5AS Dear Mr J Hammond,
At the end of my Degree I am planning to go into the industry and get a job in the area of Fashion Promotion and Communication. I have looked at many job applications already. I am planning on applying for a job so soon because I feel that this will give me a step up above others in the industry before I graduate. To be successful there is no question that it will be vital to make relationships and gain connections with the right people early on, and I believe that my degree has positioned me well to get a job where I can excel in the future. My degree has not only give me the skills I need to progress, but also the experience I need to really stand out from other candidates who are competing for the same jobs.

Domestic Staff – Bannatynes Gym, Fairfield Park
Club Promoter – Pandora’s Box Nightclub, Nottingham
Worked during the first year of University. Job included selling tickets, promoting the club through word of mouth and designing/handing out flyers etc. A variety of skills were required for the job, such as being able to talk to people confidently and persuading them to attend nights; and being dependable and relied upon to get large numbers to turn out to events. I also did occasional shifts behind the bar when they needed extra help. 2009 – 2011: Part-time Sales Assistant - John Lewis, Cambridge Worked in the Beauty and Gifts department at weekends whilst in Sixth Form. The branch is one of John Lewis’ flagship stores and is the most profitable and busy outside of London. I have built up solid customer service skills, and experience of working in several teams. I have also acquired experience of stock control, visual merchandising, and closing sales. I was the most experienced weekend Assistant by the time I left and was chosen to mentor new part-time staff and run the floor if necessary. I returned to the store to work full-time over the Christmas 2011 period.
WORK EXPERIENCE
June 2012: Boudoir PR – Summer Internship, London Interned at major fashion and beauty PR Company, representing prestigious, global brands such as Lipsy, Missguided, Goldsmiths, Penthaligons and many others. I carried out a range of jobs which included signing garments in and out by importing them into spread sheets using excel and sparkle hq software; attended a meeting at Vogue; helped with model castings; assisted with preparation for events by compiling together gift bags and ringing clients to check their attendance. I also helped style for several photo-shoots for magazines including Closer and Look. June 2008:
Barista - Starbucks, Hitchin, Hertfordshire
SKILLS
I am a punctual, hardworking, reliable, well-presented worker who can be depended upon. I am not afraid to take on tasks independently and am very self-motivated, as is clear from my work at John Lewis. At school I was a prefect, mentor, member of the school council and completed the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Outside of school I pursued my interests in dance (14 years of dance lessons in ballet and modern, taking part in several shows), singing (grade 8), piano (grade 5) and sport (I played netball regularly for an adult league, captaining my team to league and cup victories). At University I am part of the Varsity Cheerleading team, and the Fashion Society. I therefore have wide experience of team working in many different circumstances. I have a full Driving Licence.
INTERESTS
I am currently in my first year studying Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University. I am enjoying being part of a prestigious fashion school, and I am making the most of the experiences and opportunities that form part of the course. As part of a course trip to New York in January 12, I visited Ann Inc. Headquarters, which has opened my eyes to the international fashion market. I have learnt much about presentation skills and graphic design, and feel I now have a much wider knowledge of the history of fashion through studying a design and visual culture module. I am very interested in the fashion industry and in retail generally. My A Level in Photography nurtured my creative side and has resulted in my spending a lot of time with my head buried in a sketchbook. I enjoy social events with my friends and like to browse the high street and more expensive stores to get a good view of the latest trends. I have monthly subscriptions to fashion magazines and ‘zines’, and have my own blog where I post my current University work and any other fashion images or articles I find interesting. I collect images I like on pinterest, and love creating moodboards and collages in my spare time.

ALL WALKS
AS PART OF THE SEMESTER REQUIREMENTS, I HAD TO ENTER THE ALL WALKS ‘DIVERSITY NOW!’ COMPETITION.’ ALL WALKS BEYOND THE CATWALK’ IS AN INITIATIVE FOUNDED BY CARYN FRANKLIN, DEBRA BOURNE AND ERIN O’CONNOR, WORKING WITH INFLUENTIAL CATWALK DESIGNERS AND TOP INDUSTRY CREATIVES TO CELEBRATE MORE DIVERSITY WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. I DECIDED TO ENTER THE PHOTOGRAPHIC CATEGORIES, AFTER PHOTOGRAPHY IS A PARTICULAR PASSION OF MINE AFTER HAVING STUDIED IT AT A LEVEL. THE BRIEF WAS TO PRODUCE 1 TO 4 PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES THAT CELEBRATE AND PROMOTE DIVERSITY OF THE HUMAN FORM. THE IMAGES SHOULD BE HIGH IMPACT, CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF THE ALL WALKS PHILOSOPHY.

FOR THE TEAM PHOTOSHOOT, WE HAD TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, WHAT IS BEAUTY? IN MY TEAM OF 5, WE CHOSE TO DO A MODERN RECREATION OF AN OLD PICTURE TAKEN OF MARLENE DIETRICH IN 1930. WE FELT THE IMAGE EMBODIED A POWERFUL WOMEN WHO WASN’T AFRAID TOO CHALLENGE THE SOCIAL NORMS IN FASHION OF HER TIME.
S K L A W L L A
THIS IS MY ENTRY TO THE ALL WALKS ‘DIVERSITY NOW!’ COMPETITION. I DECIDED I WANTED TO FOCUS ON RACE AS SUPPOSED TO SIZE OR AGE BECAUSE RECENTLY IN NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, STAGGERINGLY ONLY 8% OF THE MODELS USED ON THE CATWALKS WERE BLACK. HAVING WRITTEN A REFLECTIVE ESSAY AND AN ESSAY ENTITLED ‘WHAT IS BEAUTY?’ IN THIS PROJECT, DISCRIMINATION IS SOMETHING I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT. PHOTOGRAPHER STEPHEN MEISEL (WHO SHOT THE ALL-BLACK ISSUE OF VOGUE ITALIA IN 2008) SAYS THAT HE ALWAYS WANTS TO USE BLACK MODELS IN BOTH FASHION EDITORIAL AND ADVERTISING SHOOTS, BUT IS CONSTANTLY TOLD BY CLIENTS ‘NO, BLACK GIRLS DON’T SELL’. I TOOK THIS PORTRAIT IN PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO AT UNIVERSITY. I FEEL THE IMAGE REPRESENTS THE FRUSTRATION GIRLS OF DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES FACE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, AND THE SAD FACT THAT ALTHOUGH WE ARE LIVING IN MODERN TIMES THERE IS STILL RACISM IN FASHION.
