A proposed campus for this site provides an innovative solution to healthcare in a weakening community. With an aging population, and majority Hispanic, Elyria Swansea needs an alternative to traditional senior adult care. This development must provide a retreat and resource for the aging population without prompting isolation. This will improve the medical and psychological state of its users and encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle through an increased quality of life. By integrating the architecture with the colloquial style of Elyria Swansea, and by implementing site-specific ecologies and pollution technologies as well as the implementation of a public courtyard and elevated running track, the user’s health and wellness will be improved through the promotion of social interaction in the community. The architectural proposal contains 8 assisted living units, a shared living and dining building, a 24/7 healthcare clinic, and a gym equipped with workout classrooms totaling nearly 20,000 square feet.

TENSION IS THE REASON THE MEZZANINE LEVEL IS LIFTED TO WHERE IT IS. FROM THE OUTSIDE IT APPEARS THAT THE VESTIBULE OFFERS SUPPORT FOR THE SECOND LEVEL, BUT IT IS ACTUALLY SUSPENDED FROM THE FLOOR ABOVE. THE MEZZANINE APPEARS TO BE FLOATING ABOVE THE STREET ALONG WITH THE DENSE EXTERIOR CLADDING. THIS CONTRAST OFFERS AN OPEN INTERIOR FOR THE GROUND LEVEL ABSENT OF COLUMNS WITH PLENTY OF VIEWS.

RAISED ABOVE THE STREET PROGRAM SUSPENDS IN MID-AIR AS WE WALK BENEATH.

HIGH ABOVE THE STREET, CMU bLOCKS SIT IN COMPRESSION. WITHIN THE LIGHT STEEL FRAMING OF THE CANTILEVERED BUILDING RESTS A DENSE CMU WALL AND PARAPET THAT EMERGE FROM THE MONOLITHIC FOUNDATIONS. THE HEAVIEST MATERIAL IS USED AT THE HIGHEST POINT WITH ONLY MINIMAL STEEL AND GLASS TO SUPPORT UNDERNEATH. THE BALANCE THAT IS CREATED BECOMES ONE OF THE MOST INTRIGUING ELEMENTS OF THE SPACE.

T H E EXTERIOR FACADE IS COMPOSED OF GLASS AND ALUMINUM PANELS WHICH FORM A SERIES OF GRIDS THAT WRAP THE BUILDING AND ARE ALSO MIRRORED BY THE STRUCTURE. WITHIN THAT ORDER, THE GOAL OF THE BUILDING IS TO ENHANCE CONNECTIVITY TO CAMPUS AND LEAD PEDESTRAINS THROUGH THE BUILDING WHICH THE REPETITION AND DIRECTIONALITY OF THE GRID PROVIDES.

THERE IS A SHIFT PRESENT IN FREEMAN HALL. A SHIFT IN HEIGHT. THE CURVED STAIR WRAPS THE STREET’S CORNER AND BRINGS YOU UP OFF OF THE SIDEWALK AND INTO THE BUILDING. ONCE INSIDE THE BUILDING, THERE IS ANOTHER SHIFT IN HEIGHT. THE LOFTED WORK AREA. NOW THERE IS A VANTAGE POINT FROM WHERE YOU CAN GLANCE BACK AT THE STREET WHERE YOUR JOURNEY BEGAN.

OUTDOOR TO INDOOR. OPEN TO ENCLOSED. HOT TO COLD. UNCONDITIONED TO CONDITIONED. LOW TO HIGH. SOME OF THE MANY TRANSITIONS PRESENT IN FREEMAN HALL. THE REGULATING VESTIBULE SERVES AS A BUFFER BETWEEN OUTDOORS AND INDOORS AS WELL AS A REGULATOR OF TEMPERATURE. AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE FIRST SET OF DOUBLE DOORS, YOU ARE ABOUT TO ENTER A NEW SPACE YOU ARE GIVEN TIME TO REFLECT ON THAT CHANGE AS IT HAPPENS.

F R O M THE STREET, THE GRID OF MATERIALS AND FORM SUGGESTS A SENSE OF WEIGHT AND ORDER, BUT AS YOU WALK INSIDE, THE PROGRAM AND STRUCTURE ARE SUSPENDED ABOVE THE NOW SEEMINGLY “LIGHT” ENCLOSURE. THE HEAVY FACADE SEEN FROM THE GROUND APPEARS TO BE TERRACOTTA TILES BUT ARE ACTUALLY A FIBER CEMENT PANELING SYSTEM THAT CREATE A LIGHTER STRUCTURE ABOVE.

Villa Altagracia Campus in the Dominican Republic: a place of growth and fellowship. This project was my Senior Thesis Project. It is a Community Center for a small town in Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic for a church called Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto. This campus consisted of 3 existing classrooms that became medical dispensaries. Classrooms are now located in the new building. There are two large classrooms, with the potential for four, depending on the needs of the community. The kitchen is an open air, exterior kitchen on the ground level to promote gathering. This is a wonderful spot for community and cooking classes. Natural materials that are easily accessible in the Dominican Republic were specified. The lower level of the building is constructed of concrete block with wood frame construction for the upper level, all covered by metal roofing over wood rafters. The decking is Hispaniola Pine with fencing and railing made from native Spanish Cedar. I had the privilege to travel to the Dominican Republic and help the onsite team break ground on the project. We aided in the site excavation, foundations and slab pour, and lay the CMU block walls for the first level. This was an amazing experience getting to design, draw, and help build something so important for this small community. Villa Altagracia is now a place for the community to gather, learn and worship.
