LEE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN BIOGRAPHY
A BRITISH FASHION DESIGNER, COUTURIER AND FOUNDER OF ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
The Begining of Alexander McQueen Alexander McQueen was born on 17 March 1969 in Lewisham, London, to Ronald and Joyce McQueen, the youngest of six children. His Scottish father worked as a taxi driver, and his mother a social science teacher. It was reported that he grew up in a council flat, but, in fact, the McQueens moved to a terraced house in Stratford in his first year. McQueen attended Carpenters Road Primary School, before going to Rokeby School. He was interested in clothes from a young age. As the youngest of six children, McQueen began experimenting with fashion by making dresses for his three sisters. His earliest fashion memory reaches back to when he was just three years old, drawing a dress on the wall of his East London family home. He was also fascinated by birds and was a member of the Young Ornithologists' Club; later, in his professional career, he often used birds as motifs in his designs. McQueen left school aged 16 in 1985 with only one O-level in art, took a course in tailoring at Newham College and went on to serve an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard, before joining Gieves & Hawkes as a pattern cutter.[12] The skills he learned as an apprentice on Savile Row helped earn him a reputation in the fashion world as an expert in creating an impeccably tailored look. It was claimed that he sewed obscenities into the lining of suits made for Prince Charles, although a recall of suits made by Anderson & Sheppard to check found no evidence of this. While serving his apprenticeship, McQueen also attended the Rosetta Art Centre. After Saville Row, he worked briefly for the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans, making costumes for shows such as Les Misérables. When he was 20, he worked for Koji Tatsuno, and then Romeo Gigli in Milan before returning to London to go to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
McQueen initially applied for a job as a pattern cutter tutor at Central Saint Martins, which he failed to get as he was aged 21 and too young to teach students of his own age. However, based on the strength of his portfolio, Bobby Hillson, the Head of the Masters course at Saint Martins, encouraged McQueen to enroll as a student instead. He received his master's degree in fashion design and his 1992 MA graduation collection, titled Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims, was bought in its entirety by influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow. Blow was said to have persuaded McQueen to use his middle name Alexander when he subsequently launched his fashion career. Another suggestion was that he used his middle name so as not to lose his unemployment benefits for which he was registered while still a struggling young designer under the name of Lee McQueen. In 1992, McQueen started his own label, and for a time he lived in the basement of Blow's house in Belgravia while it was under renovation. In 1993, he relocated to set up his studio in Hoxton Square, an area that also housed other new designers including Hussein Chalayan and Pauric Sweeney. His first collection after graduation, the Taxi Driver collection inspired by the Martin Scorsese's film, was organised by the British Fashion Council for young designers without runway shows, and presented on a clothes rack in a small room at the Ritz Hotel. He introduced the "bumsters" in this collection, but the collection was never photographed as all the clothes were stolen after the presentation. In his early collections, McQueen sown locks of his own hair in perspex onto the clothes to serve as his label. McQueen's first professional runway show in 1993, the Spring/Summer 1994's Nihilism collection, was held at the Bluebird Garage in Chelsea. His early runway collections developed his reputation for controversy and shock tactics, earning him the title "l'enfant terrible" and "the hooligan of English fashion". McQueen's Nihilism collection, with some models looking bruised and bloodied in see-through clothes and extremely low-cut bumster trousers, was described by journalist Marion Hume of The Independent as "theatre of cruelty" and "a horror show". McQueen's second runway show was for the Banshee collection. Shortly after creating this collection. McQueen met Katy England, his soon to be "right hand woman", when outside of a "high profile fashion show" trying to "blag her way in". He promptly asked her to join him for his following collection, The Birds, as "creative director" thereafter she continued to work with McQueen, serving as his "second opinion". The Birds, which was named after Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film and held at Kings Cross, had a roadkill theme featuring clothes with tyre marks and the corsetier Mr Pearl in an 18-inch waist corset. McQueen's "bumsters" were a common feature of his early shows. Although derided by some and attracted many comments and debate, it spawned a trend in low-rise jeans, especially after Madonna wore one in an MTV advert in 1994. Michael Oliveira-Salac, the director of Blow PR and a friend of McQueen's said, "The bumster for me is what defined McQueen." The fashion world went in mourning on February 11, 2010, with the sad news that Alexander had taken his own life. He passed away just days after his mum died, three years on from when his good friend Isabella Blow - who helped him become a star – committed suicide.
SARA JANE BURTON BIOGRAPHY
A BRITISH FASHION DESIGNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Sarah Burton or Sarah Jane Heard, was born in 1974, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, English fashion designer who was creative director for the Alexander McQueen label. Heard studied art at Manchester Polytechnic before attending London’s Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. While still in school, she became an intern (1996) at the fashion studio of McQueen, a British designer known for his groundbreaking clothes, shocking catwalk shows, and precise tailoring. When she graduated in 1997, she joined the company full-time. In 2000 Heard was promoted to head of women’s wear, and the company boasted such patrons as actresses Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow. Four years later she married David Burton, a fashion photographer responsible for the company’s “lookbooks.” After McQueen’s suicide in February 2010, Burton ran the company for a short time before accepting the position of creative director. As such, she became the overseer of both the men’s and women’s lines as well as the accessories collection. She also was tasked with completing the line’s spring-summer and fall-winter collections for Paris Fashion Week, which she did to critical acclaim. Although choosing not to present the elaborate shows that McQueen did, Burton was applauded by critics for staying true to the McQueen house’s dark, edgy brand while adding her own feminine style to the creations. Although well known within the fashion industry, Burton earned international attention when in April 2011 she was revealed as the designer of Catherine Middleton’s wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William of Wales. The long-sleeved dress was made of ivory and white satin gazar and had a v-shaped neckline, a fitted waist, an almost 9-foot (2.7-metre) train, and a Victorian corset-style bodice—a trademark McQueen design. Burton also designed the maid of honour’s dress worn by Middleton’s sister, Pippa, as well as a second dress worn by the bride. The designs were widely praised. In November 2011 Burton was named Designer of the Year by the British Fashion Council, and the following year she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
STYLE AND LEGACY ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
As one of the most shocking designers to ever show on the runway, McQueen was known for breaking all the rules. When asked to describe Alexander McQueen's style many often jump to the words controversial and theatrical and indeed through his work this has been proven to be correct. McQueen was known for portraying often dark or sombre themes in his work, but presenting them in a way of sartorial beauty. His 1998 Fall/Winter collection showed this exactly. The show featured live flames burning on stage, bald caps, red contacts, red snakeskin, catsuits, eccentric braiding and over all satanic symbols. Alexander believed fashion to be more than a piece of cloth or a pair of shoes, and was quoted several times explaining it as an 'everyday art form', one which was woven by the artist and worn by the model. McQueen's style was indeed theatrical and controversial, but it was also political, beautiful and influential on more levels than one. The legacy of fashion designer, Alexander McQueen is one which is very regularly acknowledged in the world of art. His controversial collections, relaxed nature, tragic death and overall life have single-handedly made him one of the most fascinating modern designers to walk the face of the Earth. As one of the few designers worldwide who can truly state that they revolutionised the fashion industry, Alexander did not regard fashion as a commercial profit as many designers at the time did, but as an art form. However, the largest difference between his designs and those seen before his, were that his were not made to be attractive or fashionable, but to be beautiful and though-provoking. Not only were his designs not classically 'pretty', they were also incredibly controversial. Many believed his designs to be offensive and early runway shows even gained backlash under claims of misogyny. One of his first shows, under the title 'Highland Rape', featured models wearing tartan and torn lace clothing with fake bruises and injuries along their bodies. Many loved the open and political nature of this show as it addressed issues previously not talked about, but many highly criticised its glorification of rape. Regardless, Alexander Mcqueen was notorious for pushing the boundaries of fashion and certainly influenced the clean-cut, typical clothing which had come before him.
We hide our sorrows beneath a happy faces.
