Along the way is where we take in the scenery. And often where we have the most fun. Sure, along the way can be the place we stop to fill up or grab a bite to eat. But in Michigan, along the way becomes the place we’ve been longing for. Because enjoying the journey is always Pure Michigan.

OU CAN’T GET AWAY from pop culture in the Great Lakes USA. While the region may be best known for its glorious shorelines and breathtaking scenery, the buzz of pop culture is everywhere – from the stars of the music, TV and movie worlds, to the celebrities linked to food, fashion and sport. Take music. In the Great Lakes USA, you can visit the home of Motown and check out the blues capital of the world; call on the birthplace of Bob Dylan and tour Prince’s Paisley Park home/studio as well as visit the places he sang about; and rock into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and roll up to the world’s largest music festival. Many of the sites and scenery in the Great Lakes may seem familiar to the first-time visitor, which is no surprise. For years, movie-makers have been heading there, so locals have seen Harrison Ford (Presumed Innocent), Bruce Willis (Die Hard 2), Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition) and George Clooney (Up in the Air) among the many stars being filmed in their streets. Michigan’s Traverse City has its own film festival, while the TV series ER and Chicago Fire were shot in the Illinois city, and the hugely-popular Happy Days was based in Milwaukee. Fashion and clothes junkies are well catered for, with the Magnificent Mile in Chicago and Minnesota’s Mall of America both huge draws for shoppers. Detroit, too, is continuing its journey on the comeback trail with some of its unique designer boutiques gathering acclaim. There’s no chance of visitors going hungry in the Great Lakes USA, as big-city gourmet restaurants vie with traditional, all-American establishments – some on the

The deep-pan pizza was created in Chicago, farm-to-table food and craft beers are everywhere in the region, and Wisconsin (America’s Dairyland) is home to a world-champion cheese. Sports fans need look no farther than the Great Lakes USA for their fill of the action – from fabulous golf courses to packed stadiums that host successful NFL teams; from World Series-winning baseball teams to ice hockey giants; and from NBA champion basketball teams to football (soccer) clubs that are gathering in popularity. HE BIRTHPLACE OF the skyscraper in 1885 and deep-dish pizza; blues capital of the world; the starting point for world-famous Route 66; the home of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States and probably the most famous – whichever way you look at it, you’re talking about Illinois. Known for its stunning architecture and magnificent museums, Chicago also offers wonderful shopping and music magic, with legendary blues clubs and fabulous festivals. Getting to grips with Chicago couldn’t be easier – whether it’s by boat, bike, bus or Segway (or along the new Riverwalk), with guided tours that give you the inside scoop on Illinois’ largest city. From Purple Rain to sky-blue water

M

INNESOTA MAY be the Land of 10,000 Lakes (in fact, there are nearer 12,000) but it is also the Land of 10,000 Ways to Prepare Fish. Everyone, it seems, has their own recipe. Walleye, the state fish, is found in abundance throughout those thousands of Minnesota lakes and rivers, while The Tavern on Grand in St Paul claims it sells more walleye than any other restaurant in the US. First Avenue in Minneapolis was one of Prince’s main stages to try out his new eccentric sounds. In 1983, the

album version of the song Purple Rain was recorded there live and, later, it set the backdrop for the film’s concert footage. The North Star State – probably better known to Brits through the massive Mall of America in Bloomington – gets its name from Dakota Indian words meaning ‘sky-tinted waters’ or ‘sky-blue waters’, and with more shoreline than California, Florida and Hawaii combined, Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are a major part of what it is all about.

ILMS, FASHION AND FOOTBALL – that just about sums up modern-day Michigan. Take films, for example. The list of movies made in Michigan is a long one – from the legal drama Presumed Innocent with Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis’s all-action Die Hard 2 in the 1990s to Tom Hanks’ 2002 crime thriller Road to Perdition, George Clooney’s 2009 drama Up in the Air and the Transformer series. When it comes to fashion, one of the reasons for Detroit’s current nickname as the 'Comeback City' is the growth of the clothing industry, with Detroit Denim – which started off in founder Eric Yelsma’s garage and now has a flagship store in the city’s fashionable Rivertown area – a prime example. And the Detroit Lions have, as the state’s only NFL team and one of the league’s oldest franchises, been pulling in the crowds as the Lions (they were previously called the Portsmouth Spartans) since 1934.

Detroit will be forever associated with Motown but the city has a history of jazz, too, with the city staging the world’s largest free jazz festival every year in September. Past performers include Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny and George Benson.

HEY’RE REAL WORLD BEATERS in Wisconsin – and not just the football team. For while the NFL’s Green Bay Packers are the most-decorated gridiron team in the world, Milwaukee has a museum dedicated to the world’s most-famous bike – the Harley-Davidson – and used to be called the ‘beer capital of the world’. The state also lived up to its nickname, America’s Dairyland, when, in 2016, for the first time since 1988, a cheese made in the United States (by the Emmi

In the past, some of the world’s biggest brewers operated out of Milwaukee but, even today, an ever-expanding list of new brewers keeps the thirsty inhabitants happy, while in July each year, Milwaukee, the City of Festivals, stages Brewfest, when it welcomes more than 100 breweries.

The hugely-successful 1970/80 TV series Happy Days was based in 1950s Milwaukee and featured pop-culture icon Arthur Fonzarelli, ‘the Fonz’, as one of the show’s main characters. The Bronze Fonz statue, located on Milwaukee’s downtown Riverwalk, pays tribute to the city’s ties with the hit show. The Fonz is a popular spot to take a selfie!
