One of my favorite “dad wisdom” memories is from one day at our house in Santa Ana, when I was about eight years old and I got really mad about something – so mad that I announced I was running away. I remember you took the news quite well. You got up, escorted me politely to the door, opened the door and let me out onto the front porch. You then explained that I was welcome to run away, but I was not, under absolutely any circumstances, allowed to step off the porch. And then you closed the door, leaving me to think about my options and — eventually — decide to come back in. I think I love this memory so much because, well, it’s just so us! You have always been the calm, practically Spock-like voice of logic and reason in every challenge I’ve ever faced. You’re supportive and generous with your guidance, and then you patiently step back and show your trust that I’ll reach the right decision on my own. And, no matter how far any of us may ever go, you always keep us close to home. I love you. Happy Birthday! Julie

Grandpa is the nicest person I know. He has the best sense of humor, we always do so many fun things together. He taught me how to boogieboard, bodysurf, and have a bunch of fun at the beach. Also, he introduced me to California rolls and fried clams! Kai

In expectation of the upcoming celebration of your birthday, I’ve reminisced a little about growing up as your child —a status that I am privileged to have and share with the other four. Growing up, you and Mom loved us with devotion and selflessly taught us how to navigate life and love the families we have created of our own. Thank you for the many lessons, although at the time I may have complained about them as “lectures.” You taught me to think independently, identify and troubleshoot problems, and gave me the confidence to find solutions. I was very lucky to grow with the constancy of your support. But when I meander on memory lane, what strikes me most was the effort you always made to make everyone feel included, comfortable, and entertained. Be it a family vacation or a summer night at the pool, you were so mindful of including everyone and making them feel special.

My favorite example of this and one that frequently pops up in my thoughts was the way you always walked away from a restaurant cashier with a handful of Andes Mints for us all. A sweet treat in addition to already treating your family to a meal out together, it always made me feel loved and part of something special. Thank you for continuing this loving effort with your grandchildren. When asked to draw a picture for your birthday, Hannah wanted to draw about you taking her to the movies, and Erin drew a picture of going to the beach with you. And they both wanted to draw Shirley Temples, evidence that they, too, associate your love with a special sweet treat. Much love and appreciation to you from us on your special day!

If someone were to ask me what it was like growing up with you as a father, I think what stands out as most significant is how you always always put family first. From summer evenings at the pool and Saturday drives through the Hill Country to opera dates and dinners at Evvia, you somehow find time for all of us and each of us and make it seem effortless. I don’t think I fully appreciated how difficult that is until I had kids of my own. We are so lucky to have grown up with your unending support, patience, positivity and encouragement. To this day, we all know if we ever needed anything you’d be there in a heartbeat, or at least a plane ride. I love that because of that same dedication, despite the distance, my kids get to see you often to know and love their grandpa.
Happy Birthday Dad! Love, Katie

From climbing trees as a kid, to navigating college and career changes, I have always been able to look to you for support, wisdom, guidance, and perspective — and it always comes with a smile, a bear hug, and a lap to curl up on. From you, I inherited an innate love of travel, a deep understanding of the importance of family, and a complete inability to keep a dry eye at sad movies. Love you so much, Tina 39

One of my two favorite memories with you was when you taught me to ice skate. I’ve never been great at it but I enjoy it so much that I’ve made a point to go ice skating every winter since early high school. I even proposed to Stacy after ice skating! I vividly remember you showing me how to take babysteps, slowly build up momentum, and step up confidently to keep balance. I like to think that was one of many Lego pieces of life that contributed to the confidence I have as an adult. Thanks for always being a great uncle. Love, Dean P.S. My other favorite memory with you is watching the 2005 Rose Bowl at your house in Austin, where UT beat Michigan 38-37, and then you took me to campus and bought me a hoodie. To this day, I still own it! It’s so old and stretched out that somehow it’s still too big for me but it’s by far my comfiest and favorite sweater.

Counting on, the Lienhard family There were seven original Lienhards. When Craig joined the family, he made eight. He set the bar high. And additionally, four more sibling in-laws would make twelve. With grandchildren the number would grow to twenty-nine. Add eight grandchildren in-laws, and fifteen great grandchildren, the number would swell to fifty-two. This is why we “apprec-e-eight that Craig was the first to join our family! By Dave
