WALKING BUILDING
BIOMIMICRY INSTITUTE & RESEARCH LABORATORY Graduatıon Project The location of the site is Basmane, İzmir. Basmane is a very wealthy and central area in terms of archeologically and comercially (hotels, hostelry, station, fair). Also Basmane is the first place which İzmir was settled in the past. So to take references from the site’s existing data, abstract them & turn them into the building is aimed. Aim is to analyze & examine general site’s system and hybrid it with the specified building’s site. In other words mimic the existing conditions and datas.

This institute is a non-profit organization that supports researches and contributes the imitations from nature to form a basis for architecture & engieering. It also helps to develop and share innovations and Technologies about biomimicry. That will aimed to provide new kind of users, integrate them with recent users. & supply reintegration of historical areas with this modern building.

PINCHING
THE GRIDS
Horizontal Structural Elements To mimic the existing conditions and datas efficiently; the most suitable system is determined as aggregated complex structure. It is created with taking different layers of information one by one from the site.
Vertical Structural Elements
Grid planes are created with the constant intervals and according to prevent space distributions with determined sqm.s. Then intersection points between space mass and grid are taken as attraction points. Final step is pinching (attracting) the grid lines according to that attraction points. This process applied to every planes.
Structure Deformatıon Attractıon Poınts To execute second phase of the aggregated complex structure; aim is turning it into more three-dimensional. So the rule is developed as follows: For every vertical element; the one before’s and horizontal’s intersection points will be the attraction. And control points of the vertical element are moved according to the attraction points. In the end, all points are connected with lines like a spider web.

The existing parking building is demolished because it contradicts with the context and blocks the view. But rather than the view; the most important thing is that it has a potential under of it. Because it’s in the protected archeological excavation area. So the aggregated structure is changable depending on what comes out from the ground like remnants. It is designed like a walking structure. In the urban scale; people are attracted to this archeological area with the use of parameters from the site and ancient archeological routes. To increase the common activity areas on this site; cafe, library and conference room is designed accordingly. Especially gathering areas are maximized in the determined attraction points.

DYNAMIC NODE BUILDING TRANSPORTATION HUB & LIVE-WORK SPACE
usage
URBAN ANALYSIS Site is placed in HalkapĹnar which is a dense transportation area. But there’s a lack of residental areas. So the building combines two functions which are transportation hub and live-work space. This provides living spaces for people and makes them to participate more rather than just passing.

These point nodes are moved according to the wind & sun and they are shaping the structure of the building. For instance in winter, wind should be blocked. So that in the direction of winter wind; nodes are getting closer. That makes the structural elements closer to each other to prevent the wind from entering inside. But in the direction of the summer wind; nodes move away from each other to let the wind inside.

MINIMAL SURFACE
Urban Strategy
Aim is providing various links between disconnected urban areas or strengthen the existing connection points for pedestrian access.

pedestrian movement and density
7.00-9.30 a.m.
Important points in Beşiktaş axis, Istanbul
9.30 a.m-4.00 p.m.
Aisles were bumpy and sloped in Beşiktaş, İstanbul. So pedestrians prefer this longitudional axis to participate.
4.00 p.m.-10 p.m.
Participants are creating their own desired paths which is dangerous because of the road has disconnecting points.
Material Geometry Experiments soapy solutions Saop surfaces are analog models for minimal surfaces. The aim of using minimal surfaces (curvature) are material and surface optimization & curvature’s strength. Minimal structures are smart in terms of structure because of their curvature. They need less material.
Analog models transferred into digital format with the “Minimal Surface Definition in grasshopper
They are deformed to create different spatial qualities choosen analog models for creating minimal surface
Notion of smooth pedestrian space
At the end of the urban analysis, two problematic areas were defined. One of them is disconnection between two public open areas.
Continuous overpasses are created for passengers

Aim is providing shading and shelter Therefore movable glass panels are oriented according to sun’s direction
TRIANGULAR ENTRY for Izmır University of Economics
There is an entrance on the bottom part of the Faulty of Fine Arts & Design building. But it’s no longer enough for the capacity of people. So the most efficient solution is a proposal for an another entry. The proposal is a triangular glass entry. It’s composed of modular triangles to have structural resistance and provide visual connection with the rest of the environment.
PLAN PLAN 1:50 The units are deformed and re-sized for providing connection with the brick wall. Triangle’s angles are arranged for orienting people to use especially this entrance.

DESIGNING THE
T - HOUSE Abstraction of Place In the site in Urla, first site investigation was made. Then the plaster is poured according to the site pattern for creating terrain of an experience. After drying, make 2Dimensional diagrams that show layering, overlapping, intersections and scale relation.
Program
“The program for the T-House is a study in the symbiotic relationships between a host, a guest and a group of visitors. Imagine a scenario where the host awaits a guest who will return to this place for the purpose of a shared meal. Additionally, visitors will make use of the place through local agricultural production and shared meals / celebrations. (ref. slow food movement)

STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITON “Case Studies in Building Structures” 2008/2009 It’s a redesingning project for
“The goal of the Clark Public Utilities/American Institute of Architects Student Design/Drafting Competition is to encourage students to develop skills in the design process by exploring current issues such as affordability and energy conservation. The program provides an opportunity for students to communicate their ideas through design of a small project. The project is a small retail shop with a residence located above the shop in Long Beach, Washington.”
Design Narrative
An active young couple in Long Beach, Washington would like to start a retail business in the downtown area. They love the outdoors and are very active. They want to reduce their “carbon footprint” so they have decided to start a retail shop and live above it. They would like to have a shop that would appeal to the younger crowd and use recycled “green” and sustainable materials for the construction and finishes. Solar Panels

A SMALL INN/RETREAT CENTER Birgi was an important settlement in Anatolia with its public quarters, mosques, baths and foundations. It has been one of the keystones of our architectural heritage. So for making a place frequented by people and revive & accelerate the life in Birgi, a retreat center designed. The aim is to protect historical fabric of Birgi, while modernize it. So I icluded the main characteristics in the design such as retaining walls, bay windows.
Model on the site
Form determined according to the topography. Stcurtural frame is shaped by the form. Retreat center includes a multipurpose room, a restaurant, open spaces and 16 rooms.
ARTIST’S HOUSE A HOUSE IN ASANSOR, IZMIR Asansör is a place in İzmir, which has important properties in terms of antiquity. But in this project, peculiar proportions such as proportions of streets, buildings and stairs are more important. Site is on a north facing hillside looking toward İzmir Bay. The clients are an active couple (a photographer and a fashion designer) who will occupy this house as a second residence in Turkey. They usually work together and like to exhibit their works all around the house. Therefore, there is exterior circulations for exhibiting their works.

EXCITEMENT We have traveled blindfolded at recently constructed
Faculty of Fine Arts& Design Building, I feel like I’m going to fall down, sometimes flying and sometimes falling. Most intense feeling was excitement. So, this project is about creating excitement on the visitors. The paths which are going up & down and sequence of them provide this feeling with diagonality of form.
