David Orr 3rd Season Centenary, ‘96
Head Coach David Orr begins his third season as the head coach of the Centenary men’s soccer team. Orr is Centenary alum that both played for the Gents and served as an assistant coach with the program for four seasons from 1999-2002. In 2004-05, Orr was the head coach at Mountain View College and he assisted with all aspects of recruiting, training, budgeting, and scheduling in the four years he spent working with former coach Jed Jones at Centenary. Under Orr and Jones’ guidance, the Gents went from a 4-12 record in 2000 to a 14-5 mark in 2002. Orr also has coaching experience in the Shreveport area, having formerly been the head coach at Captain Shreve High School from 1995 to 1998. Sports Information Director Allison McClain is in her second year as the Sports Information Director in the Centenary College athletic department. In this role, McClain oversees all aspects of the department for each of Centenary’s 16 intercollegiate sports. McClain was a 2009 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Centenary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with an emphasis on Professional Writing. She spent her last two years working as a Sports Information student assistant, serving as the contact for men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf her senior year. As an undergraduate, McClain assisted with all game-day media relations’ efforts, published articles on the college’s athletic website, as well as the producing the 2009 Ladies softball media guide. Outside the classroom and SID office, McClain excelled on the softball field as a four-year member of the Ladies softball team. In her sophomore season, she earned All-Mid Con and All-LSWA Second Team utility player honors as well as being named an All-Mid Con and LSWA Player of the Week. Her accolades went beyond the field, as she was recognized as an NFCA Academic All-America Scholar Athlete and named to the Academic All-Conference team all four years. She garnered the Outstanding Athletic Achievement award her senior year, served as a student justice on the Centenary College Honor Court, was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and was named to the Dean’s List numerous times. Prior to rejoining the Centenary athletic department, McClain spent the 2009 summer working as a Media Relations intern with the Houston Astros Baseball Club. With the Astros, she served as an editorial assistant for the Astros Magazine, assisted with game-day press box duties, compiled daily clips, worked with TV stats, and recapped games for the Astros Minor League affiliates. A native of Diboll, Texas, McClain graduated as the 2005 Diboll High School Valedictorian. She is the daughter of Jim and Judy McClain. Her younger brother, Wesley, is a freshman at the University of Houston and represents the Cougars on the men’s golf team.

HISTORY Behind the Name....Ladies and Gents The history of the Centenary athletics nickname “Gentlemen” is quite unique. First established in the fall of 1921 by thenCentenary President George Sexton, it seems the football team had been in a fight the previous game, and Sexton sat the team down before the next game and told the players, “...from now on, you will all act like Gentlemen.” With the majority of Centenary men also soldiers, the moniker “Gentlemen” or “Gents” was a logical choice. A tongue-in-cheek account that first mentioned the new nickname appeared in the 1923 Yoncopin (Centenary’s yearbook) in the football summary. “...there was some doubt on the eve of the first game. Reports from the Marshall (Texas) camp had them recruiting from the boiler factories and we were made to believe that the Marshall team was coming to Shreveport to mop-up with the ‘Gentlemen.’ Well, we put on our best manners, but just couldn’t help running up a 77-0 score...” In December of 2007, the Centenary student body held a voting process in order to add an additional mascot to the traditional Ladies and Gents. Although Ladies and Gents will remain the official nicknames of the Centenary athletics teams, Skeeter the Catahoula was chosen to provide an on-campus presence in the form of a true mascot. Now, an actual Catahoula dog that was rescued from an animal shelter in Houston, Texas, walks the campus and attends special functions. A mascot in a suit was also created and attends sporting events. The nickname has stuck ever since and it was natural to call the women’s teams the “Ladies” when the school began women’s sports in the 1960’s.
“Skeeter” was rescued from “Citizens for Animal Protection,” a non profit shelter in Houston, Texas. The shelter takes in more than 12,000 orphaned, rescued and abandoned pets each year. Skeeter had been at the shelter for about a month.

THE COLLEGE Centenary College of Louisiana Centenary College of Louisiana is a private, four-year arts and sciences college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1825, it is the oldest chartered liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Centenary is one of 16 colleges and universities constituting the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) and is regularly rated as one of the top colleges in the South. Mentioned in the Templeton Guide’s Colleges that encourage Character Development and in Peterson’s Top Colleges for Science, the College is also highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report. In 2009, the Princeton Review tagged Centenary College as one of the “Best 368 Colleges,” and, in 2008, Newsweek named us the “Hottest Liberal Arts School You’ve Never Heard Of.”

Dr. B. David Rowe President
An ordained United Methodist minister, President Rowe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Southwestern University, a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University and a Certificate in Ecumenical Studies from the World Council of Churches and the University of Geneva. He earned the Ph.D. from Georgia State University where his research led to the dissertation entitled Cultural Leadership and Peace: An Educational Response to Religious Violence. With more than 18 years in higher education administration, and with extensive planning, fundraising, and institutional marketing experience, Dr. Rowe has served Wesleyan College, Oxford College of Emory University, and the Candler School of Theology. His professional interests, which include organizational transformation and global sustainability, complement his research specialization in leadership development and social change. He is the co-founder of a non-profit organization, Oikos (oy’-kos), which focuses on systemic solutions for global sustainability. Dr. Rowe joins Centenary at a time of transition for the College and looks forward to helping to find ways to propel Centenary into the future. Against the backdrop of the nation’s faltering economy, a new vision is emerging for Centenary College: to define church-related liberal arts education for the 21st Century. The challenge will be to create such a program while optimizing the use of shrinking resources. With these moves, Centenary is charting a bold new course into this century and beyond. A renewed focus on undergraduate arts and sciences programs will set the stage for complementing these programs with graduate professional programs, and to investigate the creation of more opportunities for students to engage global cultures through sustained and well-crafted international study experiences. A native Texan, Dr. Rowe is married to the former Jodi Hyde of College Park, Ga. They have two sons – Carter (8) and Philip (6).

HISTORY ATHLETICS HISTORY Centenary College of Louisiana has fielded an athletic team in at least one sport since 1894, when the football team faced Louisiana State University. Centenary’s football squad was one of the best in the South in the first half of the 20th century, the high point being an undefeated 10-0 season in 1927. Centenary produced professionals Conway Baker, Buddy Parker, and Cal Hubbard. Hubbard is a member of three halls of fame: Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame. However, the poor oil economy in the area forced the discontinuation of the football program in 1947.

ADMINISTRATION Dr. Tom Tallach
Adam Walsh
Director of Athletics
Dr. Tom Tallach has served as Centenary’s Director of Athletics since Fall 2007. Since his arrival, the Gents and Ladies have seen major changes to their surroundings. The Gold Dome has a new hardwood floor, new premium seating, a new public address system, and a new weight room. The tennis courts have been resurfaced and new screens and nets are being installed. The softball facility has new dugouts, a new backstop, and a new public address system. These and numerous other improvements were made possible because of a dramatic increase in booster support. Tallach has high expectations for himself as well as for Centenary’s student-athletes, coaches, and other staff. Tallach re-joined the Centenary community after most recently serving as Assistant Athletic Director at Tarleton State University. At Tarleton, he organized and administered a comprehensive compliance program for the institution, taught graduate and undergraduate courses, and provided administrative leadership and training for many of the sports programs. He served on NCAA regional tournament committees in women’s basketball and softball and delivered compliance presentations to regional and national audiences. With the exception of a two-year period that included doctoral research, work in the family business, and basketball coaching at Ouachita Baptist University, Tallach spent twelve years at Texas A&M-Commerce. He began as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant men’s basketball coach for a struggling Lions team that would win the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Championship two years later. He then served as Assistant Athletic Director and faculty member in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Sports Studies. With primary responsibility for event management, compliance, and athletic scholarship administration, he also served as the Athletic Director for UIL (Texas High School Federation) Region II, administering championship competition in volleyball, basketball, track & field, tennis, and golf. He was later named Interim Athletic Director at the University. Under his leadership, the Lions claimed LSC Championships in men’s basketball and women’s soccer, three coaches were named LSC Coach of the Year, and one coach was named Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year. He served on two NCAA regional tournament committees in women’s soccer in addition to serving as Director of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional Tournament. During his tenure in Commerce, he was involved in and/or responsible for numerous facility improvements, served on many institutional committees including SACS re-accreditation, chaired the LSC Compliance Committee, helped guide the Athletic Training Education Program to national certification, and always taught at least one academic course. A former Gent pitcher (Class of 1993), Tallach was named to the Trans-America Athletic Conference (TAAC) All-Academic Team, graduated Magna Cum Laude, was President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and received the Health & Exercise Science Award. The ‘92 and ‘93 Gents captured TAAC Western Division Titles under head coach Andy Watson. Tallach resides in Shreveport with his wife Gabriela and son Grant.
Assistant AD
Adam Walsh is in his second year as Assistant AD after taking over the role during the 2009-10 school year. Walsh’s duties include compliance, game day management, and the supervisor of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Walsh was also named the 21st head coach of the Gents basketball team following the 2009-10 season after serving as an assistant for the past three seasons.
Shelley Armstrong
Senior Woman Administrator Shelley Armstrong was named Centenary’s Senior Woman Administrator in January 2010. In that role, Armstrong will assist in providing a valuable perspective in the administrative decision-making process. Armstrong also serves as the men’s and women’s cross country coach and will begin her seventh season this year.
David Hoaas
Faculty Athletic Rep. Dr. David Hoaas has served as the FAR since 2000. As faculty athletic representative, Dr. Hoaas is charged with overseeing the maintenance and improvement of student-athlete welfare. He monitors the academic support services, administers senior-athlete exit surveys and the coaches’ certification examination, and assists in the preparation of various NCAA reports.
