Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The athletic training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies and Assistant Athletic Trainer Eddie Giroux. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Keith O’Connor begins his 11th season as head coach at Centenary College in 2014. Since becoming the head coach at Centenary, Keith O’Connor has transformed CC from a program that won just three games the year prior his arrival into a highly competitive program in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and the mid-atlantic region. In 2013, O’Connor guided the Cyclones to their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament berth after securing the CSAC title for the first time. Centenary set new school records for longest winning streak (8 games) and longest unbeaten streak (10 games), while placing five players on all-conference teams. The team won 12 matches for the first time since 1999 and earned the second seed in the league tournament after winning a program-record eight conference matches. Reid Meeker ‘14 and Quinn Khouri ‘15 were both named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. O’Connor has led Centenary to 56 wins over the last six years, while leading Centenary to one Skyline Athletic Conference Tournament (2006) and CSAC Tournament appearances during five of the last six seasons (2008-10, 2012-13). Overall, he owns 83 victories in 10 years at CC. Under O’Connor, the Cyclones have excelled just as much in the classroom as they have on the playing field. The 2007 team posted the highest combined GPA at Centenary (3.08) of the school’s 13 varsity teams. The 2007 and 2009 squads featured players with the highest GPA (3.78 and 3.83, respectively) of all male student-athletes at the college. Individually, Centenary men’s soccer has groomed 41 CSAC All-Academic Team award winners and has delivered 20 NSCAA Scholar All-Region student-athletes and three ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans since O’Connor became the head coach. 2012 marked a return to the CSAC Tournament as the Cyclones finished the season with an 8-9-1 record after winning two critical, late-season conference games to earn the sixth seed in the tournament. The Cyclones traveled to Marywood University for a first round tournament game against the third-seeded Pacers and quickly jumped out to an early lead when Antonio Cabrera netted a goal in the 18th minute. Marywood responded with a goal just five minutes later to tie the game, however Centenary regained the lead just before the half. After a failed clearing attempt by the Pacers’ keeper, Alex Khouri took a feed from Abiodun Lawal and delivered it into goal for the go ahead goal. Unfortunately for Centenary, the Pacers fought back, tying the game in the second half and forcing overtime where they would prevail by a 3-2 score.
The 2011 team concluded the year with a 9-7-2 overall record, 4-5 in CSAC play. Coach O’Connor’s squad was honored with five post season accolades. Andrew Pinella, Quinn Khouri and Patrick Bourland all earned Second Team All-CSAC honors, while Matt Winkler received honorable mention. Rounding out the postseason honors was Reid Meeker who was placed on the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The Cyclones reached several indivdual achievements in 2011 as Pinnella became Centenary’s all-time leader in goals with 37, points (93), assists (19), and game-winning goals (12) as well as several other categories. Along with Pinnella, Jason Rogers became the school’s all-time saves leader (294) and the all-time leader in wins (27). In 2010, the team finished the year 10-9-1, including 6-3 in the conference. Centenary earned the fourth-seed in the conference tournament and hosted Keystone in the opening round. CC blanked the Giants 4-0 to advance to its first conference tournament semifinals in program history. The Cyclones battled but eventually fell to the top seed and eventual champion, Neumann 2-0. Patrick Bourland and Kyle Thompson were each named Second Team All-CSAC and Andrew Pinnella and Matt Winkler garnered honorable mention accolades. Pinnella set a single-season team record with 10 assists. Off the field, 12 Cyclones earned CSAC All-Academic status and the program received six National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-Region honors. The 2009 campaign saw the Cyclones reach the conference tournament thanks to a 3-4-2 CSAC mark, where they fell to Immaculata 2-0. Three student-athletes received All-CSAC accolades, including two second team awards. Off the field, 12 players were named to the CSAC All-Academic Team and two earned NSCAA/adidas All-East-Region Scholar-Athlete honors. Centenary finished the 2008 campaign 10-10-1, earning the fifth seed in the CSAC Tournament with a record of 4-4-0. It did not take the Cyclones long to join the elite teams in the conference as the berth into the CSAC Tournament was its first since joining the conference in 2007. The Cyclones squad also earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth for the second time in three years. Five Cyclones received All-CSAC postseason honors, including two named to the first team, one earning second team accolades, and two claimed honorable mentions. In 2006, O’Connor led the Cyclones to an 11-10-0 record and placed third in the Skyline Athletic Conference with a record of 6-3-0. That mark earned the program its best conference finish and its first Skyline Athletic Conference tournament berth since joining the league in 2003. The eleven wins also marked the most wins by a Cyclone team since 1999. In the process, the Cyclones earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth, its first-ever appearance. Three team members were named to the Skyline postseason teams, including two First Team awards and one Second Team selection. Furthermore, Centenary garnered two NSCAA All-Region players and touted its first-ever conference Rookie of the Year. O’Connor was named the Skyline Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Centenary College Coach of the Year.
Prior to his arrival at Centenary, O’Connor was the assistant men’s soccer coach at the University of Delaware from 2001-2004. At Delaware, O’Connor was actively involved with the organization and development of a nationally competitive Division I men’s soccer program. He helped guide the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a record of 13-34-10. Their best season was in 2001, when Delaware went 7-11-1. He also coached the AC Milan club team in 2002 and 2003. During his two years with AC Milan, the team advanced to the U-17 Delaware State Cup finals in 2003 and the U-16 semi-finals in 2002. O’Connor also served as a player assessor for the Delaware Olympic Development Program (ODP). Before taking over the assistant coach responsibilities at Delaware, O’Connor served as the head junior varsity coach at his alma mater, Ridgewood High School. While at Ridgewood, he led the Maroons to a two-season record of 23-9-5 and berths in the Bergen County Tournament semifinals in 2000 and finals in 1999. The team also won the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League-A title in 2000. As a player, O’Connor enjoyed a successful playing career at the high school, club and collegiate levels. He became the first freshman to start for the varsity squad in Ridgewood High School history and in his four years at Ridgewood, he captained the team for two years, while capturing one Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League Championship, two Bergen County Tournament Championships and two New Jersey State Sectional titles. He earned such accolades as all-league, all-area, all-county and all-state. He was also named one of the top 22 players in the state during his junior and senior years. O’Connor completed his high school career as one of the school’s all-time greats and still ranks among the Maroons’ career leaders in points (second), goals (third), and assists (first). He was inducted into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. A former Division I player recruited to Loyola College (Md.) (now Loyola University), O’Connor played four seasons from 1994-1999, helping lead the regionally-ranked men’s soccer team to an impressive 50-29-6 record, two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA play-in appearances in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 1999, O’Connor earned his bachelor of arts degree from Loyola College (Md.) in communications, specializing in advertising. His accreditations include a United States Soccer Federation ‘B’ coaching license and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Josh Spivack opens his sixth season with the Centenary men’s soccer team in 2014 after a threeyear career as a player for the Cyclones. Spivack helped the program to one of the finest seasons in school history as the Cyclones reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time after claiming their first-ever CSAC title. Centenary’s 12 victories were its highest total since 1999. As a player, finished his career with 16 points on five goals and six assists, including career-highs in points (10), goals (three) and assists (four) as a sophomore. He earned two NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors during his playing career. Spivack ranks among Centenary’s career leaders in assists and was also recognized as a team captain. During his three years, Centenary appeared in two conference tournamentsand qualifed for the ECAC Tournament twice. Following his collegiate career, Spivack joined Royal Racing FC Montegnee, a professional club in Belgium, where he also continued his education. He has completed his NJYSA “E” License and holds and NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma. Spivack holds a bachelor of arts degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management from Centenary. He currently coaches with NJ Dynamo Soccer Club, where he is the head coach for the U16 and U18 boys teams. He also is a head trainer for Pre-K Kickers, which provides soccer education for 3-6 year olds, as well as continuing work with Cerdafied Soccer Training, which works with youth clubs around north Jersey.
2014 Season Preview Centenary College made history last season, earning the Colonial States Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship for the first time with a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Marywood.
11th-year Head Coach Keith O’Connor has guided the Cyclones to a berth in the CSAC Tournament during five of the last six years, including an appearance in the semifinals in 2010. However, in 2013, Centenary stormed through the Conference tournament and earned their first crown since joining the league in 2007. Coach O’Connor’s squad returns three of its five leading scorers from last season, including AllCSAC performer Quinn Khouri (Eldersburg, Md./ Liberty). Khouri ranked second in the CSAC for total points (17) and second with seven goals.
The team’s forwards will be led by sophomore standout Luis Marin (Union City, NJ / Union Hill). Marin attempts to build on a solid rookie season after tallying four game winning goals to advance Centenary in conference tournament play. Marin also ranks second on the team in several categories such as points (18), goals (7 and assists (4). Junior Abiodun Lawal (Lagos, Nigeria/Irvington) also returns as a force for the Cyclones and a leader for the midfield position. Junior Glenn Brennen (Butler, Pa./Butler) and sophomore Kevin Brix (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township will also return to the Cyclones’ defensive core along with three newcomers are expected to aid in the effort. After starting all 37 career games (17) 2012 & (20) 2013, junior goalkeeper Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) is expected to be back between the pipes this fall. Goleman recorded seven shutouts and made 89 saves (91st in NCAA Division III), while earning twelve victories in goal. Goleman was also selected to the CSAC 2nd team All-CSAC and is expected to provide leadership for the rookie goalkeepers. Centenary has graduated six seniors in which many were key players; however, the coaching staff has also brought in a class of seven newcomers that, many of which are expected to contribute immediately. The Cyclones look to go for the crown once again this season as they begin the 2014 season on August 29 at the Doug Martin Memorial Classic against Rochester Institute of Technology at 5:00 pm.

2013 Championship Team The 2013 men’s soccer team brought Centenary College a year of firsts as they set the best season record of 12-6-3 while under Head Coach Keith O’Connor, recorded their longest winning streak (8 matches), longest unbeaten streak (10 matches), took home the 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship title, and made their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite entering their first ever CSAC Tournament with an eight game winning streak, the tournament would be no easy task for the Cyclones. The 2013 squad would face third seeded Cabrini College in the first round of the tournament where penalty kicks were needed to decide the winner. Centenary hosted Cabrini College in the Semi-finals match since they were tabbed the second seed in tournament and competed to a double overtime thriller. The Cyclones grabbed the lead first with a goal by Sean Robinson, but momentum shifted as Cabrini scored back-toback goals in the second half. With only five minutes left in regulation, Luis Marin sent a long shot between the pipes for the 2-2 equalizer to keep the Cyclones alive and head into overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, penalty kicks came into play and Jesse Goleman would give Centenary a 2-0 advantage after he stopped the first two Cabrini attempts. The Cavaliers however would rally to knot the count at 3-3 after five PK’s. Glenn Brennen and Nick Telle both connected on their kicks, as did both Cabrini shooters, before Goleman came up

big, making the save on Cabrini’s last and final PK attempt. Antonio Cabrera stepped up next drilling a kick into the corner of the net to seal the match for the Cyclones sending them to the Championship game against Marywood.
No.2 seed Centenary would head to Scranton, PA to face the No.1 seed, Marywood University. The Pacers handed the Cyclones their one and only loss in the CSAC Conference during the regular season. Since the loss on October 2nd, Centenary went on a rampage posting an 8-0-1 record outscoring their opponents 19-6. Needless to say, the Cyclones did not fold after the loss, but rather learned from it and became ready to take on the challenge of facing CSAC Rival, Marywood on their turf for the CSAC title. A goal midway through the first half would be enough for the CSAC Title and an NCAA Tournament Appearance as Luis Marin scored the lone goal off a pass from Quinn Khouri for a 1-0 lead. Marywood had near chances at the net to tie the game but were unsuccessful as a couple of shots struck the post. With the win, Centenary would be crowned the 2013 CSAC Champs and move onto the NCAA Division III Tournament on an automatic bid. Entering the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the nation boasting 10-straight wins for a school record, Centenary was slated to take on #4 Messiah College in Salisbury, Md. A tough matchup ended the historic run for the Cyclones as they were handed their first loss in 45 days as they fell to defending-national champion Messiah 9-1.
Centenary would close their season with a 12-6-3 record while Head Coach Keith O’Connor earned the 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award. The 2013 season would be one to remember with many historic accomplishments to look back to.

J.E. Reeves Turf Field
J.E. Reeves Jr. Turf Field is the brand-new XM field turf facility located on the campus of Centenary College. Opened in April 2014, the newly-constructed field serves as the home for Centenary’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and other campus activities. The field was completed in large part due to generous donations from the Reeves Foundation and is named after J.E. Reeves Jr., the President and Treasurer of the Reeves Foundation.
In addition to the turf surface, a new scoreboard and sound system were installed for use at home sporting events.
