Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy
Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.
About Our Athletic Program
At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

John McCloskey completed his sixth season with the Centenary College women’s lacrosse program in 2012. In six years at the helm, the Cyclones are 52-32, including a 26-21 conference mark. A year after guiding the 2011 squad to a 9-5 mark, including 6-2 in the CSAC, Coach McCloskey led the 2012 team to seven straight victories to begin the season, a season in which the Cyclones would finish 10-5 and 5-3 in the CSAC. The 2012 squad, looking to push deeper into the CSAC Tournament found itself in familiar territory as the Cyclones once again squared off against the Neumann Knights in a CSAC Tournament first round game after earning the number four seed in the tournament. A season ago, Centenary also drew Neumann in the first round game, and after defeating the Knights during the regular season, Centenary fell to Neumann in the playoff tilt. The 2012 Cyclones reversed the outcome from a year ago, knocking off the Knights 13-9 at home to advance to the CSAC Tournament semifinals. Centenary fought hard but fell to the number one seeded Pacers to close out the 2012 season.
Under McCloskey’s tutelage, Centenary finished 2012 second in the CSAC in goals per game with 17.22 and finished atop the conference in ground balls per game (33.56), caused turnovers per game (13.44), and shots on goal per game (29.56). Senior Danielle Bay became Centenary’s All-Time record holder in points and in caused turnovers, while five Cyclones earned postseason honors. Bay was named to the All-CSAC First Team, with Alysia Pinkerton, Meredith Bruce, and Rebecca Balfour earning spots on the All-CSAC Second Team. Allie Swartz was named All-CSAC Honorable Mention to round out the post season recognition. The 2011 team received six All-CSAC postseason awards. Juniors Danielle Bay and Meredith Bruce led the way, as each were named to the First Team, while sophomores Alysia Pinkerton and Nicole Judd took home Second Team accolades and junior Hannah Ally and sophomore Allie Swartz were given Honorable Mentions.
Centenary’s six conference victories include a 16-10 win over eventual conference champion Gwynedd-Mercy. The team finished in a three-way tie for the second-best record in the conference and earned the fourth seed after tiebreakers. In the opening round of the tournament, CC dropped a close contest to Neumann, 13-10. The team matched its on-field success with 11 CSAC All-Academic Team accolades off the field. The 2010 campaign saw the team go 13-2, 7-1 in the CSAC, setting program-records in wins and conference victories . The Cyclones reached the CSAC semifinals for the first time in program history, falling in a hard-fought 14-12 contest to Gwynedd-Mercy. The team finished first in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 19.3 goals per game. Seniors Megan Mars and Kiti Ovaskainen led CC, as each received First Team All-CSAC and Second Team ECAC South All-Star honors. Mars set program records with 117 points and 95 goals and led the nation in points per game. Ovaskainen recorded a Centenary single-season best 106 groundballs, leading the nation in that category, and also tallied a single-season best 31 assists.
Junior Lauren LaMotta was also named First Team All-CSAC while Bay, Pinkerton and Swartz received Honorable Mention accolades. In 2009, the team went 7-4 overall, 3-4 in the CSAC, and two Cyclones took home All-Conference honors, as Michelle Garone was named to the First Team and Ovaskainen earned an Honorable Mention. In 2008, Centenary earned its first-ever berth to the conference tournament, falling to the College of Notre Dame in the opening round, 12-11. Ovaskainen was the nation’s leader in groundballs in 2008. From 1988-2003, McCloskey was the head men’s lacrosse coach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. There, he built a winning Division I program without the benefit of athletic scholarships. McCloskey earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 after guiding Lehigh to a conference championship while posting the programs’ best record in school history at 12-3. The team was ranked nationally six times during his time there, and produced the 1999 nation’s best man-down unit and top goal scorer. McCloskey coached two Patriot League Defensive Players of the Year during his career at Lehigh. After leaving the Division I level, he took over the Emmaus High School boy’s program in 2006 and led the team to a perfect 8-0 record and the Lehigh Valley Conference Championship. He was named the Penn-Valley League Coach of the Year that same season. Prior to his tenure at Lehigh University, McCloskey was the associate head lacrosse coach at Roanoke College, helping to lead the program to the 1983 NCAA Championship game.
McCloskey holds a Master’s of Education – Guidance/Counseling from Lynchburg College, as well as a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Delaware. As an athlete at UD, he earned All-American Midfield honors in lacrosse, led the team to four East Coast Conference Championships and was a two-time All-Regional soccer striker. McCloskey was an All-American in 1979, earned two all-league citations and ranks No. 4 all-timeat UD in scoring with 87 goals and 117 assists. In 2008, McCloskey was named to Delaware’s 60th Anniversary All-Time Men’s Lacrosse Team. At Dundalk (Baltimore, Md.) High School, he received All-American Attack honors, along with being a First Team All-Baltimore Metro player in both soccer and lacrosse. He was a member of the soccer state championship team and county championship lacrosse team his senior season. He presently resides in Bethlehem, Pa., with his wife Karen and their two daughters, Lauren and Paige.
Season Preview Centenary College women’s lacrosse coach John McCloskey believes that if things break the Cyclones’ way this year, they can be a very competitive team in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). “We’re not 25 players deep like some other teams,” said McCloskey. “But every kid is committed and plays the way we want.“ Last season Centenary continued building its winning tradition by going 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference, earning their fourth consecutive winning season. For their efforts the Cyclones earned the fourth seed in the conference tournament and with it, a home game in which they defeated Neumann University. However, an injury plagued Cyclones team would fall in the semifinals to the eventual-runner-up Marywood University. The successful season featured a number of notable victories over non-conference teams such Cazenovia College, Rutgers-Camden, and Wesley College as well as CSAC wins over Cedar Crest College and Notre Dame of Maryland University of Maryland. Although Centenary has lost some big pieces from that team, including two-time First Team All-CSAC member Danielle Bay, the Cyclones have restocked and are looking forward to this season. The strength of the Cyclones 2013 team starts at the midfield position with a pair of senior-captains in Alysia Pinkerton and Nicole Judd. Pinkerton had a banner season last year, as the Second Team All-CSAC member led the Cyclones and finished third in the conference with 91 draws controlled. Pinkerton also scored 35 goals and assisted on seven more for 45 points, while scooping up 63 ground balls. While Judd’s offensive stats don’t jump off the page at you, she’s the type of player that every team needs to be successful. The consummate team
Season Preview player, Judd was reliable all season and finished second on the team in controlled draws with 48 and tied for third with 44 ground balls. With both players returning, the Cyclones hold a distinct advantage in draws and McCloskey looks forward to that. “With recent rule changes you can now only have three players going after the ball as opposed to five,” said McCloskey. “But our drawers are going to be fine because they have the ability to draw it to themselves or other players.” Aside from the experience from Pinkerton and Judd, the Cyclones will also rely heavily on freshman Kristen Rabenstein to step in and play a big role right away. Despite being young, McCloskey expects Rabenstein to be aggressive while going after draw controls and ground balls. In addition to the midfield, McCloskey also expects his contingency at attack to contribute with key goals. Leading the way are seniors Arden Wright and Allie Swartz, who both bring the important upperclassmen experience to help the team. Wright, a starter in every game last season, finished with 16 goals and will be expected to find the back of the cage even more this season. Swartz had the best year of her career as a Cyclone last season, finishing with 33 goals and 15 assists, as she scored in all but one game. The Cyclones will also look for contributions from a pair of freshmen at attack with Carlie Schmitt and Devin Sutko seeing extended roles this season.
Season Preview Defensively the Cyclones are planning to start sophomores Kelsey Walter and Brittlyn Dendy, in addition to a pair of freshmen in Erica Tripp and Kelly Conklin. Last season as a freshman Dendy had an immediate impact, as she split time between offense and defense and came away with 33 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. In addition to Dendy starting every game, Walter also saw action in nine games while starting two. The defense of the Cyclones has been the biggest challenge in recent seasons and many are hoping this is the year the defense can match the excellence of the offense. The Cyclones roster rounds out with a number of players McCloskey considers great assets to the team. Sophomore Cheyene Reynolds will see a lot of time on the field defensively and a trio of freshmen in Meghan Delaplain, Shannon Smith and Rosemary Gonzaga should each develop into solid players during their time at Centenary. McCloskey feels there are several keys to making this season a successful one; and aside from staying healthy, he feels the play of senior goalie Andrea Senkarik is pivotal. Senkarik, who never played lacrosse before, has come a long way during her time on campus. McCloskey credits her great attitude and commitment to the sport for development. “Our goaltending doesn’t need to be spectacular. It just needs to be consistent,” said McCloskey. “We’ve got to play well as a team defensively to go where we want to go.”
Season Preview Where the Cyclones want to go is the CSAC championship game, but it won’t be an easy road. Centenary opens up their season with four non-conference games against teams that McCloskey thinks are compatible in ability to his. Centenary then has its first big test of the season on March 28th, when they hit the road to take on Virginia Wesleyan College, a ‘top tier’ team according to McCloskey. Following that matchup the Cyclones begin the CSAC portion of their schedule and are expecting tough games from Cabrini, Gwynedd-Mercy, Neumann and Marywood. “With the academic obligations to some of our student-athletes, we have to look to be at our best in April rather than over doing it in February,” said McCloskey. “If we stay healthy and play the way we are capable, we’ll be able to do that.” McCloskey is about to embark on his 7th season with the Cyclones and he acknowledges that he has had to change his coaching philosophy during his time at Centenary College. “Here, we play to win but there’s a lot more to it,” said McCloskey. McCloskey prides himself on the quality of lax and truly believes that if enough kids play good ball and work together, that Centenary College will put a good product on the field. With a strong work ethic and promising mix of youth and experience, the 2013 season looks to be an exciting and successful campaign for the Cyclones.

“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. To learn more about this exciting project or to make a contribution to The Cyclone Athletic Fund or The Athletic Turf Field Project, call Simone Knaap at (908) 852-1400 ext. 2336 or email knaaps@centenarycollege.edu.

About the CSAC
The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – was formed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year colleges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic programs continued to grow, it became increasingly necessary to address individual and collective concerns about intercollegiate athletics.
In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.
The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.
