“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER The Fitness Center, located in Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.

ATHLETIC TRAINING The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

COACHING STAFF Head coach Kevin Davies just wrapped up his 12th season at the helm of Centenary’s women’s soccer program. Under his guidance, the team has become a force in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and the region. Davies has guided the team to fourstraight conference semifinal appearances, including two championship games. In the past four seasons, the team has gone 40-27-8 with a 30-7-3 conference mark, culminating with the best year in program history in 2010. The Cyclones’ 2010 campaign began with Davies winning his 100th career game as head coach of Centenary, thanks to a 9-0 defeat of Old Westbury. After a loss to Cabrini that left the team 6-7, CC closed the regular season on a six-game winning streak, including a 1-0 doubleovertime win over Montclair State, the program’s first-ever victory against the Red Hawks. Centenary tied the program-record in conference victories, going 8-2 to earn the third-seed in the CSAC. After defeating Neumann in double-OT, 2-1, CC tied second-seeded Marywood 2-2 and advanced to the championship game thanks to a 7-6 advantage in penalty kicks. The Lady Cyclones became the first Centenary program to host a conference championship, where it took on fifth-seed Immaculata. After tying the Mighty Macs 1-1, CC earned the CSAC Championship and its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a 4-3 edge. In the NCAAs, CC battled No. 16 Dickinson to a 1-1 draw and again went to penalty kicks, where this time the Cyclones fell, 4-2, ending their season. Jazmine Farrell received First Team All-CSAC and Second Team NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Regional and five other Cyclones earned All-Conference awards, including Tatiana Kingston, who took home Second Team honors after setting a program record with 14 assists. After winning nine games in 2008, the Lady Cyclones improved to 14 wins in 2009, with five losses and one tie. The team matched their 2008 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) mark of 7-2-1 to place third in the conference. Centenary advanced to the semifinals where it fell at Cabrini. Because of their successful regular season, the Lady Cyclones earned a berth to the ECAC South Tournament as the sixth-seed, falling at third-seeded Swarthmore, 3-0. Davies coached nine student-athletes to CSAC postseason awards, including First Team honors for juniors Kelley Michanczyk, Bianca Santulli

and Farrell. In 2008, Centenary finished 9-9-2, including a 7-2-1 conference mark. The Lady Cyclones defeated Immaculata 1-0 in the opening round of the CSAC Tournament, before falling to Gwynedd-Mercy, 1-0, in the semifinals. Five student-athletes received All-Conference honors, and Santulli was named to the NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic-Region. Davies guided Centenary to a 14-6-2 mark in 2007, including an 8-11 record in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). The Lady Cyclones earned a berth into the conference tournament, reaching the championship game before falling to Eastern, 1-0. Davies’ squad then was chosen as the second seed in the ECAC Metro Region Tournament. Centenary shut out the College of Staten Island (5-0) and Rutgers-Camden (2-0) to reach the championship game, where it fell to Stevens, 5-1. Six student-athletes were named to the PAC AllConference teams, including First Team honors for Tanya DiDonna, who also earned NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team honors and was selected as Centenary College’s Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Over his 12 seasons at Centenary (1999-present), Davies has amassed a career record of 112-10013. In three seasons in the CSAC, his team has a mark of 22-6-2. The Lady Cyclones have made seven postseason appearances during his time with the program. Since coming to Centenary, he has taken the women’s soccer program to the next level, continually filling the schedule with high quality opponents. The Lady Cyclones have developed an exciting style of soccer, one that makes it enjoyable for fans to watch and very competitive for team members to play. A native of Neath, South Wales, Davies began playing at the semiprofessional level at the age of 16 for Briton Ferry Athletic in the Welsh National League. He then moved to the U.S. in 1994 to attend East Stroudsburg University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. While at ESU he played his freshman year for the very successful men’s program at the tender age of 34 before becoming the assistant women’s coach. Davies has also coached with the New Jersey ODP (Olympic Development Program) He currently holds a USSF ’A’ coaching license, while supporting numerous youth soccer clubs around the Hackettstown area. Besides his coaching duties at Centenary, he is one of the college’s Athletic Trainers. He resides in Hackettstown with his wife Stacy and their two children, Raegan and Shayne.

COACHING STAFF Richelle Morse begins her second season as an assistant coach for the Centenary women’s soccer team. Morse joined the Cyclones after serving as an assistant soccer coach with the Holy Family Academy girl’s soccer team, a position she held since 2008. Morse was the starting goalkeeper for Caldwell College for four years before her graduation in 2007. She currently holds the school record for career shutouts. Her best year was in 2004, when she won 11 games, stopped 149 shots and recorded nine shutouts. She has used her experience to serve as the goalkeepers coach at HFA and a goalkeeper trainer for Soccer Xperience, a soccer training organization based in Old Bridge, N.J. Morse holds her National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) State Diploma and Advanced Regional Diploma, as well as her NSCAA State Goalkeeper Diploma and her Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. She recently received the USSF National D License.

Becca Townsend is entering her second season as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Centenary College. Townsend joined the Cyclones after finishing a stellar four-year playing career at Saint Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. At St. Lawrence, Townsend earned Liberty League Second Team honors twice (2008 & 2009) and All-Academic honors in each of her four years (2006-2009). She also served as Team Captain for St. Lawrence and for the Super Y Soccer U-20 team. Townsend graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Psychology and a minor in Educational Studies. She finished with a 3.56 GPA and made Dean’s List during her Junior and Senior years. In addition to her playing experience, Townsend also worked as Sports Coordinator and Head Counselor at the YMCA Camp Carr in Flemington during her summers from 2005-2008.

Kingston received Second Team All-CSAC with a season-record 14 assists last year, leading the conference and finishing eighth in the national

Although Davies expects the co-captains Lehmann and Veverka to take a major leadership role this season, he said: “we will be looking for all the upper-classmen to take on the leadership role on the field and off.”

“Good teams are consistent,” he said. “We need to repeat last year’s performance and take it one step further.” Looking forward to the 2011 season, Davies is very excited to see how the team comes together.

Hamilton scored Centenary’s goal in its 1-1 tie with No. 16 Dickinson in the NCAA Tournament and Smith and Bressman were both solid performers who combined for two goals and five assists and were key components of the Cyclones’ defense.

“The newcomers have all worked very hard in preseason and have a tremendous attitude,” said Davies. “Every one of them will see considerable playing time during the season as a reward for their hard work.”

The Lady Cyclones are looking forward to a very challenging season in 2011 with hopes of defending their 2010 CSAC Championship title. But Davies knows repeating is not an easy task.

“Like every season our schedule is a tough one,” he said. “Our conference is becoming very competitive and out of conference we play some very strong teams.”

Davies and his team will open the season with the Cyclone KickOff Classic on Labor Day weekend where they will compete against Drew, Rowan and Final Four participant Otterbein home on Cyclone Athletic Field.

Included in the list of newcomers is goalkeeper Alyssa Hackelberg, a transfer student from Kutztown who hopes to give the Lady Cyclones a solid foundation in goal this season. In two seasons at KU, she posted 136 saves and 17 shutouts while helping the team reach the NCAA Tournament both years. Also joining the team this year are freshmen Nikki Gillis, Megan Williams, Laura Potter, Becky Camp, Nikki Crowley, Allie Molinaro, Jessica Curtis, Samantha Sysak and Cara Holmes.

The 2011 campaign will be far from easy for the Lady Cyclones, but with the amount of hard work the girls have been putting in, Davies believes the year “will be an interesting and hopefully a fun, successful season.”
