Admiring the retiring

Honoring Ms. Hoch after 13 years of teaching at Countryside sofia Other retirees: BURGOS

Retirement. A bittersweet idea of leaving one chapter of life to enter a new beginning. Some of the teachers a few of us have known throughout the years we have attended Countryside are ending their time with us to venture off into the open world of retirement. While we will all miss the retiring teachers in the years to come, the Countryside student body is welcoming new teachers with open arms. So do not forget to appreciate the time left with our amazing teachers before they are gone. Ms. Hoch, our Little Cougar Preschool director, has been teaching at Countryside for 13 years. She is deciding this year will be her last year. While she will be missed, she stated she will always remember the amazing times that were shared with her students and the preschoolers, “Seeing the high school students working successfully with the preschool children. Preschool Graduation with the high school students and the Little

Cougars” were some memories she recalled. Hoch’s plans for herself after retiring include, “Visiting my grandkids, traveling, volunteering, and just doing what I want to do when I want to do it!”

Graduation and exam dates collide with each other katieGOSS

page editor

Graduation from high school is hands down one of the most important days in someone’s life. It is the mark to an end of your childhood, and the beginning of your adult life. This event brings friends and families together to not only celebrate the accomplishment of surviving school for the past 14 years but to also celebrate your future goals. Typically teachers and fellow classmates take the day off school, if needed, to come join in celebration with this event and wish the graduates a “congratulations” and a “farewell” before sending them off to the rest of their lives. It gives everyone a chance to be involved in this special day, however this year a dilemma has been brought up. Countryside High School’s graduation at Tropicana begins at 11 am on May 23rd, and 7th period exam for students at Countryside begins at 11 am on May 23rd. So, unless you have exempted your 7th period exam or do not have one, it seems you will not be able to attend graduation. My first initial reaction was, “who planned it like this?” and, “will everybody who wants to come, be able to?”. As a senior, and having attended graduation for the past three years, I have always dreamed of walking across that stage while my peers, teachers, family and friends cheer me on. The thought of my teachers and friends being held back from the celebration

because of a planning mishap done by the school and county quite frankly made me angry. So, I started from the bottom up to see how the exam days, graduation, and the end of the school year is scheduled, and who planned it like this. Major League Baseball rules Countryside High School’s fate. Since we graduate at the big league baseball field, all the county’s planning for this special day fully revolves around their availability. So this year when the county asked for their availability, Tropicana came back with some days the third week in May, or a week or two into June. The county, not wanting to wait until June for graduations, accepted those days in May that were given. Consequently, they also needed to give the rest of the students their exams so they could go on summer break on time, resulting in the overlapping of the 7th period exam and graduation. But how does the school receive its time and day for graduation? The county gives each school their time and day when they get the availability from each venue, however if you would like to change your day and time you can always ask. Principal Schlereth, after talking to some of the teachers and administrators that are involved with graduation, decided to keep the time and day as is. When asked why we still had to graduate at Tropicana and not somewhere else, Schlereth stated, “Tropicana has unlimited seating for families and friends. Some school’s like Dunedin, who graduate at smaller venues like

Ruth Eckerd Hall, are only given a certain number of tickets and that’s it”. It is expected that a lot of substitute teachers will be in school on that day, so the regular teachers are able to attend the biggest day of the school year. When it comes to students though, they also have options if they want to attend graduation. “Every student has a right to take their exam,” stated Schlereth. If possible, you can talk with your seventh period teacher to take the exam at another time is possible, or get with your administrator to schedule a later date for the exam. Either way there are ways to take your exam and attend graduation without consequences. After digging into things it seems that none of this was done intentionally, the county just seemed to be stuck with some tough decisions. We are not the only school to run into this problem, we are one of very few. As a senior myself, I know I have a lot of friends who are not graduating that really want to come, and if they were prevented from being apart of one of the biggest days of my life, it would be heartbreaking and seem like such a missed opportunity. However, there are options for everybody to be able to come it seems like. Graduation is May 23 at 11 in the morning, and I hope to see everyone who wants to be there, there.

Classmates give advice to the rising gradelevels

Patrick McCullough’s advice to the new Stephanie Kantchev’s advice to the new Comfort Babalola’s advice to the new Seniors Juniors is... Sophomores is... is...

“I felt like second semester of Sophomore year was the worst, and I just wanted to quit already. Just stick through it and try not to get senioritis before you’re an actual senior. Also try to apply for early college, it’s a great opportunity!”

“Early Admissions is a really good opportunity to get a free year of college while finishing your final year of high school. You shouldn’t procrastinate like me because it makes your life harder. Don’t stress about what other people are doing and how many AP classes they are taking. Focus on doing what you are capable of doing and just follow your own path.”

“Make sure to stay organized. Be prepared before you go into class. Make sure you study hard. College Algebra is an easier dual enrollment class that i suggest you take. Don’t get lazy just because it is your senior year. Don’t fool around, this is your last year to make things matter. Also, stay on top of college admissions.”

When playing Uno there are a few cards a player prays to have in their deck. One of such cards is the “Wild Card”, in the Paw Print Staff that card is Cheri Burkett. Hands down you are one of the most essential cards in the deck. You may appear to be shy or timid at first glance; however, the fact is you are one of the most well-spoken for people to have joined the staff. Far from shy, you are never afraid to state your mind, ask a question, or lighten the mood with a joke. You are moving on to bigger and better things next year, but fret not for your absence will be greatly felt here at the staff. - Logan
