National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. The company has since broadcast more than twenty other productions live from the National Theatre, and on occasion other theaters in the UK and around the world. Though each live broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view of each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time. Satellites allow the productions to be broadcast live, without delay, to cinemas throughout the UK as well as many European venues. Other venues view the broadcasts ‘as live’ according to their time zone, or at a later date. NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE AT THE CENTER IS FUNDED WITH SUPPORT FROM PAMELA AND SCOTT GIBSON, THE JAQUITH FAMILY FOUNDATION, AND MARGERY AND EDGAR MASINTER.

BRETT DENNEN DECEMBER 16_7 PM THE CENTER THEATER $37-$47* *Plus $2 Vendini fee
Brett Dennen creates folk-pop music that draws from his influences of classic Americana singer-songwriters. Rolling Stone described Dennen’s 2013 album Smoke and Mirrors as, “cheerful, hook-heavy…[shifting] gracefully from lilting, breezy pop to heartfelt balladry.” NPR praised him, calling him, “capable of cranking out big, beautiful pop songs… [capturing] both the ornate and the simple.” Brett has always found inspiration beyond his music as well. A talented visual artist and watercolorist, he’s incorporated his paintings into his shows, and into his relationship with fans. He’s climbed Everest and Kilimanjaro, guitar in hand, in support of several important non-profits, including The Impact Plan and the Love Hope Strength Foundation. And his unique taste and appreciation for food and drink is now on display through the launch of his new venture Dennen Wines. Brett’s irresistible spirit runs through it all.

RHYTHMIC CIRCUS: FEET DON’T FAIL ME NOW DECEMBER 28_7 PM THE CENTER THEATER $53 - $69* *Plus $2 Vendini Fee
Home-grown hoofers from Minneapolis hit the road with a trunk full of tap shoes, funky costumes and a big brass band, ready to burst onto the stage with “FEET DON’T FAIL ME NOW.” “Heatbox” the human beatbox, joins the swingin’ seven-piece funk band to accompany each tap, shuffle, and stomp with a clang, riff and refrain. It’s easy to see why the this troupe was a 2012 winner of the Edinburgh Festival “Spirit of the Fringe” Award. In this joyous parade of genre-hopping music and hard-hitting percussive dance, you’ll be jumping out of your seat and dancing to the beat! “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” premiered in August 2008 at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when the group’s dancers and founders joined forces with the seven Twin Cities’ heavyweight musicians. Together, they integrated an inventive style of rapid-fire tap with a variety of musical genres to create a show that presents a wildly creative view into the indomitable power of the human spirit.

DON’T CRACK UNDER PRESSURE DECEMBER 29_7 PM THE CENTER THEATER $18* *Plus $2 Vendini Fee
Thierry Donard has completed another aroundthe-world journey with his camera, bringing us right into awe-inspiring natural settings where men and women carry out incredible feats. From the most beautiful snowy alpine faces to the peaks towering above the Norwegian fjords, from the waves of Fakarava to proximityfly above the glaciers to the heart of Swiss Alps. Skiers, snowboarders, wingsuit pilots, and surfers all have one thing in common: the desire to reach the goals they set for themselves, sometimes at the price of waiting months for various weather criteria to converge, and all this in a time when nature is becoming more and more chaotic.

BELA FLECK & ABIGAIL WASHBURN FEBRUARY 5_7 PM THE CENTER THEATER $54 - $67* *Plus $2 Vendini Fee
Sure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But when the banjo players cast in those roles are Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck—she with the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, he with the virtuosic, jazz-toclassical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots— it’s a different matter entirely. There’s no denying that theirs is a one-of-a-kind pairing, with oneof-a-kind possibilities. Fleck and Washburn have collaborated in the past, most visibly in their Sparrow Quartet with Casey Driessen and Ben Sollee. Until last fall, though, any performances they gave as a two-piece were decidedly informal, a pickin’ party here, a benefit show at Washburn’s grandmother’s Unitarian church there. It was inevitable and eagerly anticipated by fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare that these partners in music and life (who married in 2009) would eventually do a full-fledged project together.

GRACE POTTER FEBRUARY 8_8 PM THE CENTER THEATER SOLD OUT!
Citing Miles Davis, Dylan, the Beatles, Bowie, Blondie and Beck as prime examples, Potter says she is drawn to artists who make sonic leaps from record to record—a notion she has explored throughout her career. For an artist who has built a devoted fan base through her electrifying live show, Potter seems hell-bent on breaking out of the box when it comes to studio work. She refuses to be defined by a single genre. Over the last three years, she has seamlessly transitioned from collaborating with the Flaming Lips, for a Tim Burton film, to songwriting and producing for soundtracks and theme songs for film and TV, to multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated country duets with her friend Kenny Chesney, to most recently joining The Rolling Stones on stage for an inspired rendition of “Gimme Shelter.” “The bands and artists that captivate me,” Grace Potter explains, “are the ones who are always pushing it, always taking risks. A great musician can shine in any genre. I refuse to make the same kind of record over and over— that’s not how art works for me. The worst thing an artist can do,” she asserts, “is what is expected of them.”

AN EVENING WITH LYLE LOVETT & ROBERT EARL KEEN MARCH 16_7 PM THE CENTER THEATER $129 ALL SEATS *Plus $2 Vendini Fee
A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a conventiondefying manner that breaks down barriers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was recently named the Texas State Musician. Now three-decades on from the release of his debut album, Robert Earl Keen remains as committed to and inspired by his muse as ever. And as for accruing recognition, well, he’s done alright on that front, too; from his humble beginnings on the Texas folk scene, he’s blazed a peer, critic, and fan-lauded trail that’s earned him living-legend (not to mention pioneer) status in the Americana music world.
