The best thing about being a part of CAE is getting to know our artists, the next best thing is getting to host them in their own exhibit. What an honor it is to have two of my favorite artists collaborate and create a retrospective of their artistic odysseys. From the mountains that surround Evergreen to the Grand Canyon, Pem Dunn and Joe Glasmire, take us on journey through these breathtaking landscapes. I hope you all enjoy this exhibit as much as I do. Thank you, Pem and Joe, for sharing your talents with CAE and our mountain community. You are both a gift to our art’s community.

To our sponsors, Pandora and John Erlandson from Pandora John Properties, and Alexa Cowley of Mountain Home and Alexa Interiors, thank you. These exhibits would not be possible without your generosity. I am truly grateful for all you do for Center for the Arts Evergreen.

And to our patrons, friends, and family, thank you for Keeping the Arts Alive in our Mountain Community.

With gratitude,

Lisa

CURATOR'S NOTES

I first met Pem Dunn when he showed up to teach his Inter/Advanced Oil Painting class on a snowy Tuesday in February 2020. The classroom was buzzing throughout the morning with a combination of art critique, “Have you tried this?” instruction, and coffee-hour catchup. Everyone learning from each other under the kind tutelage of Pem Dunn. Those who know Pem know him to be not only a gifted artist but a storyteller and a community builder, always welcoming everyone warmly into his classroom. Over the years, I’ve heard stories of Pem’s hiking and skiing adventures, which are so beautifully documented in his paintings. The feeling of snow blowing off a barren ridgetop—that’s a Pem Dunn painting!

I first met Joe Glasmire at a progressive dinner in my neighborhood. He and his wife, Sandy, told of their adventures visiting almost every national park in our country. Little did I know our paths would cross again when he submitted work to CAE member shows and fundraisers and gave tirelessly of his time on the Sculpture Evergreen Board. Those who know Joe know him to be a prolific and diverse artist who ALSO uses his art to tell the stories of his life: stone cottages glimpsed while living in Pennsylvania or the rugged face of a rafting guide who led Joe through the Grand Canyon.

These two men aren’t just artists; they live their art. Creating, inspiring, teaching, and bringing art to others in their community. Pem and Joe welcomed me into their minds and their homes, sharing their life’s work with me and including me in their stories. It was a gift to have spent time learning from them and I’m honored they trusted me with this show.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the time and vision of Pem Dunn, Joe Glasmire, Jo Ann Dunn, Sandy Glasmire, and Brenda Wyman. I am forever grateful for my co-workers and teammates who make CAE the amazing place that it is: Lisa Nierenberg, Amanda Ingalls, Tom Maxey, Emiko Martinez, and Laney Camferdam.

Please enjoy!

PEM DUNN

Born in Massachusetts, Pem Dunn grew up in upstate New York. From a young age, Pem was interested in painting, and even made extra money in college painting portraits of his friends’ girlfriends. After college, Pem reported to flight school, ultimately spending seven years with the Navy in various assignments. Pem then joined United Airlines and the family moved to New Jersey while he worked out of the New York area. He began studying art with a man who owned a gallery. This mentoring relationship would last for ten years, and when Pem’s life began to feel too “left-brained” due to his career as a pilot, he found his focus shifting more to his artistic side.

Eventually, Pem retired from his jobs as a pilot with both the Navy and United Airlines, and moved to Evergreen in 1984. This is when his artistic career took off. His paintings are a clear reflection of his love of the out-of-doors. Hiking the backcountry trails of the Rocky Mountains provides much of his inspiration. Pem is inspired by the constant changes in light and weather, which is evident in the light and subtle nuances of color that bring a great deal of richness to his work. In recent years, Pem’s work has won many awards and been displayed in such publications as Western Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazine. Pem has studied with some of this country's finest artists, including Joseph Dawley, Natalie Becker, Karen Vance and Scott Christensen. Pem is represented by Winterpark Framewerx, Winter Park, CO.

JOE GLASMIRE

Joe Glasmire’s parents enrolled him in art classes when he was 11 years old. Later, in high school, he excelled in art which led to a degree in Art Education. After college, Joe taught high school art for seven years. During that time he completed a Master of Fine Art with an emphasis on drawing and print making including lithography, intaglio, and mixed media drawings. After teaching art he changed careers. Joe retired in March of 2014 after 32 years in the pharmaceutical industry, and he now enjoys pursuing his lifelong interest in the visual arts. Joe and his wife live in Evergreen, CO, near their two daughters, sons-in-law, and 5 grandchildren.

Joe gets his inspiration from nature, specifically the subtle and sometimes bold contrasts in light, color, and shadow during different times of the day. His subjects include landscapes, still lifes, and other images from Colorado, Pennsylvania, and his travels around the United States. Joe prefers the light contrasts one can see early in the morning and late in the afternoon. He creates using watercolor, oil, soft and oil pastels, graphite and colored pencils, gouache and an occasional mix of all. The style of Joe’s work alternates between tightly controlled drawing and a free and fluid use of media. He loves to draw and paint while in the comfort of his studio with great music playing in the background.
