Last year, Sara and I went out on a field trip in Denver. Within the same day, we fell in love with the work of a beautiful, fused glass artist, Helen Rudy, and an abstract oil painter named Danny Williams. We were drawn to their use of vibrant color and pattern in their work, and we immediately knew that we needed to pair them together. After we extended an invitation for an exhibition to both of them, Helen and Danny met for the first time. Not only do they have synergy with their artwork, but we were amazed to discover so many similarities in their lives: both born outside the US, both world travelers, both draw inspiration from other places and cultures. While each piece is a uniquely beautiful piece of art, their bodies of work come together to create a new conversation and artistic creation. To Helen and Danny, thank you. We are excited to share your incredible talent with our community. And to Sara Miller, thank you for having such a beautiful vision. Finally, the exhibit would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Thank you to Alexa Cowley with Mountain Home & Alexa Interiors and Karen Weidner with Coldwell Bankers. These individuals and companies provide CAE with the additional resources needed to make this exhibition and all of our exhibits a success. Thank you all for keeping the Arts Alive in our Mountain Community. Enjoy the magic!

WHY SATURATION? Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. – Oscar Wilde Ask anyone you know, and they’ll tell you that I love color. As Oscar Wilde says, it speaks to my soul. When I wandered past the window of Helen Rudy’s studio at Prisms Workspaces, I spotted Helen’s drop vessel, Gene Davis. A glass vessel created from individual layers of color melted into a thick slab. Fired, suspended over an open hole, and stretched again and again until it became the undulating vessel you see. Sand blasted by hand to create a velvet finish that makes the colors appear to glow from within. It was color personified. It wasn’t just speaking to me, it grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. The very same day, Lisa and I visited Walker Fine Art Gallery in the Golden Triangle Arts District. After viewing the exhibition, we detoured to the rear entrance. We stopped in our tracks at Danny William’s Lapis. How was it possible that one color—this blue that is the color of oceans and sapphires— could move on the canvas in the way that Danny’s work does? Walk one way and the canvas changes from light to dark. Move the other direction, the inverted water spout that bisects the canvas changes from dark to light. Danny’s brush techniques create a field of ever-changing pattern and color that cries out to be touched. Helen and Danny are both masters of combining the physical properties of their chosen media—glass and oil—with the effects of light to create pieces that burst with color. Both artists are also keenly focused on pattern and use it to evoke emotion in their work. Our reaction to the brilliance and intensity of their bodies of work led me to only one conclusion. Their artwork needed to live together in the same space. Saturation was born. We’ve dubbed it an oasis of color in the midst of winter. We hope that the work of these two generous artists warms your heart and speaks to your soul. 4
Saturation is an art exhibition created at Center for the Arts Evergreen (CAE) in Evergreen, Colorado. This exhibition would not have been possible without the time and vision of Danny Williams, Helen Rudy, Dianne Blanke, Lisa Nierenberg, Bobbi Walker, and Libby Garon. I am forever grateful for my co-workers and teammates who make CAE the amazing place that it is: Lisa Nierenberg, Amanda Ingalls, Tom Maxey, and Laney Camferdam. Please enjoy!

HELEN RUDY “I am interested in how colors mix and react to create depth and balance in the piece. I focus on the subtle effects light can have on the art.” Helen Rudy came to creating beautiful fused glass pieces from a non-traditional background in construction management. Her attention to color detail, layering, and saturation heralds back to her degree. Her crisp and clean designs clearly focus on the interaction of light and its effect on the glass. Each piece of glass is measured and hand cut. By layering one color or many different colors on top of each other, a bright and bold design is created. The glass is first fired in a kiln to about 1500 degrees F to melting or fusing point. Sometimes a second firing is needed to create a shape. The glass can be in the kiln for several days before finishing. Almost entirely self-taught, Rudy attended workshops with Milon Townsend, and Lisa Voigt, attended the Pilchuck Scool of Glass to study with Alicia Lomne, and in 2011 studied casting Pate De Verre with Anna Boothe. 6
DANNY WILLIAMS “I consider all my paintings to be visual portals to other realms… visual portals that draw the viewer into their depths and hopefully evoke a sense of wonder. I rely on color, brush technique, perspective, and the physical properties of oil paint and light to achieve this unique, multi-dimensional effect. Consequently, my paintings appear very sculptural and organic. The images that I create are abstract interpretations of my life experiences, interests, travels, and observations of nature. I am drawn to re-creating the dynamic, flowing wave-forms and patterns that I observe in nature. Thus, giving my ‘abstract’ paintings a sense of familiarity and identity to the viewer.”
