Dear Audience Member, The amount of talent onstage at the Ahmanson this month is, quite simply, stunning. For me, there’s nothing more exciting than building a new musical and presenting it to the world. If you’re at the Ahmanson for Soft Power, you are part of an act of creation that began when I first sat down for breakfast with David Henry Hwang over four years ago. I had a commission and a slot in the Taper’s 50TH Season. He had a great idea for a play. Time passed, and that play blossomed into a partnership with Jeanine Tesori and a musical at the Ahmanson. I hope everyone joining us for the World premiere of Soft Power feels as lucky as I do to be anticipating the results of the first collaboration between these two brilliant artists, and to be watching a show that’s become even more relevant since David pitched me his original idea. Few recent plays have been as lauded as The Humans was in 2016, when it swept the Tonys and earned “Best Play of the Year” nods from just about every major newspaper and magazine that covers theatre. We’re very happy to have Tony Award® winners Reed Birney (Best Featured Actor) and Jayne Houdyshell (Best Featured Actress) join us at the Ahmanson alongside many of their fellow Broadway cast members and the entire creative team from the Broadway production. Among them are two artists with Center Theatre Group history: Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (who most recently directed An Act of God and also appeared onstage in Angels of America at the Taper) and Tony Award-winning scenic designer David Zinn (who most recently did the scenic design for Soft Power as well as scenic and costume design for Amélie and Fun Home). Your patronage and support is what brings talent and art like this to Los Angeles year after year. Thank you for being a part of the 50TH Season at the Ahmanson. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

Soft Power playwright David Henry Hwang visited the USC Center on Public Diplomacy to discuss the inspiration behind the show with USC Annenberg Arts Journalism Program Professor and Director Sasha Anawalt on April 24, 2018. Soft Power “recognizes we always see other cultures through a lens, but it’s possible to shift that lens,” explained Hwang.

Can Music Make Democracy?

At first glance, the words “jazz” and “politics” do not necessarily sound like harmonious ideas. Nonetheless, at our April 8, 2018 Community Conversation, a panel of notable jazz musicians, scholars, and enthusiasts weaved a web of connections between the two seemingly unlikely modes of thought. The free, open-to-the-public event—which also featured brunch and live jazz music—gave historical context to Critical Mass Performance Group’s Ameryka in advance of its April 19–29 run as part of Block Party at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. FROM EPICS TO CLERICS What do you do after you’ve adapted one of history’s greatest epics into a poignant, critically acclaimed one-man show? The natural response for Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare— the creative duo behind the critically acclaimed An Iliad—was aim higher. Together, the two have set their sights on the Bible in The Good Book, which received a Center Theatre Group completion commission beginning in 2016 and was workshopped here in April. The Good Book got its start when O’Hare was asked what creative project he had planned next after An Iliad. With no concrete plans, O’Hare blurted out, “Well err uhh…probably the Bible,” a subject he had been fascinated with—from a secular perspective—since he was young. Court Theatre in Chicago gave O’Hare and Peterson the original commission for the piece, which had a workshop production there in 2015. But they knew there was more work ahead. So when the opportunity of a completion commission at Center Theatre Group came up, the duo jumped at it. “The completion commission has given us a home here at Center Theatre Group to dig back into the piece,” said Peterson. She highlighted how the resources of the company—including support for workshops and readings with professional actors—have helped their creative progress. “We actually have to hear actors read it,” she said, “that’s how we can tell if the dynamics are right.” The completion commission is primarily to support artists to finish work that has already begun. Or as in the case of The Good Book, to refine a work that has already been produced. Other artists who have received these innovative grants include Young Jean Lee for Straight White Men, which became a 2015 Douglas production and heads to Broadway this month.

Peterson and O’Hare agreed that the completion commission helped give them the security they needed to dive deeper into a daunting writing project. It’s “a combination of having an institution focus on you—give you a form of legitimacy—and give you a goal,” explained O’Hare. “You have to be brave enough to fail ugly early… then you can build on these things,” he added. In their earlier work, the two shied away from identifying as writers. “I think we both respect writing enough to have not felt comfortable saying we’re writers,” explained O’Hare, an Emmy-nominated actor who was a series regular in True Blood and has had recurring roles on American Horror Story and The Good Wife. Peterson is an Obie Award-winning director who has worked across the country, including 10 years as Resident Director at the Taper, where she’ll return this fall to direct Lynn Nottage’s Sweat. Though their plan was never just to adapt the Bible to the stage, The Good Book has evolved a great deal over the past few years. Their initial focus was “investigating the question of ‘What the Bible really is?’” said Peterson, in terms of both its origins and its contemporary relevance. That led them to the three major threads of the play: Biblical stories themselves, the story of a contemporary religious scholar who is also an atheist, and the story of a young gay boy who wants to become a priest. It’s the kind of story that probably wouldn’t be possible without the support of nonprofit theatres including Center Theatre Group, Court Theatre, and Berkeley Rep, where the show will open in April 2019. For our part, Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez describes the commission and the work it supports as an important part of “how we measure our success” as an institution. “If we can make a difference in the work of an artist that we believe in,” she said, “or if the work becomes part of the canon of the American theatre, then we have done our job.”

I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. Center Theatre Group Student Ambassadors Turn Big Arts Dreams into Reality

STUDENTS, LEADERS,

CHANGE MAKERS What can young people accomplish if they are given the tools to build leadership skills? What happens if they are given these tools—and then empowered to take charge? This is the experiment conducted each year in the Center Theatre Group Student Ambassador Program. Over the course of seven months, participating L.A. County high school students take part in workshops, exercises, and projects designed to transform them from passionate students into arts leaders, team players, and advocates.

(l–r) Bethlehem Seifu and Yaya Gomez.

“The Youth Summit is a great opportunity to empower students to use theatre as a way to discuss themes of culture, identity, and social responsibility,” said Director of Education and Engagement Tyrone Davis.

“Our goal is for every student who participates to come away with more confidence in themselves as leaders and the knowledge that they can do anything,” said Program Director for Next Generation Initiatives Camille Schenkkan.

Additionally, Student Ambassadors put their newly learned skills to use in the community. Many of them acted as student concierges at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals. And at the April L.A. County Board of Supervisors meeting, guided by mentors from the arts advocacy organization Arts for LA, Ambassadors Yaya Gomez and Bethlehem Seifu spoke in recommendation of the “Declaration of the Rights of All Students to Equity in the Arts Learning”—a plan to ensure that all California students have equal access to high-quality arts education.

This year, 14 Student Ambassadors served on two teams: “Arts Advocacy: Making an Impact” and “Marketing & Social Media: Peer Engagement.” They collaborated to organize and promote the Center Theatre Group Youth Summit. The students chose to title this year’s Summit “Reimagine Your American Dream,” inspired by our production of Soft Power at the Ahmanson.

The Ambassadors shared deeply personal stories about how they found community within the arts and how the Declaration would support students from different backgrounds. “I felt I had no way of opening up, sharing my interests and talents with others, until I found an empty book in the computer lab one day,” recalled Seifu about her journey to becoming a creative writer.

The Arts Advocacy team planned three workshops called “What’s Our Story,” “What’s Our Future,” and “Cultural Appreciation vs. Appropriation” for the event, which included a talk with playwright David Henry Hwang. Through writing and physical theatre-based sessions, participants practiced their storytelling while discussing cultural issues and envisioning a future America.

Gomez talked about how theatre has opened new doors—but only since discovering theatre class as a high school senior: “Can you imagine all the amazing things I could have done three years earlier if I was given these resources [sooner]?”

The Marketing & Social Media group produced digital communication resources and outreach strategies to engage students with ideas about art and democracy. Ambassadors Sophia Reyes, Julia Nieto, Daniel Najera, and Gisselle De Paz arranged social media takeovers where they asked their peers and teachers questions like, “What emoji would you use to represent democracy?”

The Board voted to endorse the adoption of the Declaration by school boards throughout L.A. County after hearing the students’ speeches. We’re sure it’s just the first victory of many for Gomez, Seifu, and their fellow Ambassadors as they become the next generation of arts leaders and change makers. on Broadway! Two of this spring’s biggest Broadway revival openings— Angels in America and Children of a Lesser God—have roots at the Mark Taper Forum. Andrew Garfield plays Prior Walter and Nathan Lane plays Roy M. Cohn in the National Theatre production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, directed by Marianne Elliott. Angels in America was developed and workshopped at the Taper, where it received its first full, two-part production in the fall of 1992 before moving to Broadway in 1993. The two parts won the 1993 and 1994 Tony Awards for Best Play, while the play’s first part, Millennium Approaches, received the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

“It’s a tribute to the play that is takes place at such a specific place and time, but it’s so universal,” Lane said in a recent interview. “If anyone was a prophet, aside from Prior Walter, it’s Tony Kushner. It’s amazing how prescient it is. So many of these issues that we’re talking about, we’re talking about now. Now, in the midst of this insane political time where democracy itself is under siege, it’s more resonant and essential than ever.”

Center Theatre Group Founding Artistic Director Gordon Davidson directed the 1979 World premiere of Mark Medoff’s Children of a Lesser God, a landmark love story set at a school for the deaf. The original Center Theatre Group production opened on Broadway in 1980 and netted Tony Awards for stars Phyllis Frelich and John Rubinstein. Now, Lauren Ridloff and Joshua Jackson are making their Broadway debuts in those roles, under the direction of Kenny Leon.

Ba

The time is right for a story that deals with “the idea of representation and allowing people who have been cut off and giving them for lack of a better word, ‘voice,’” mused Jackson. “It just so happens that the world and the play caught up to each other.” Can’t make it to New York in time to catch these star-studded productions? Mark your calendar for 2019, when Adam Driver is slated to appear in a revival of Lanford Wilson’s seminal Burn This. Driver will play Pale, the role originated by John Malkovich in the 1987 Taper World premiere. The past, present, and future of American theatre converged at the Mark Taper Forum on March 5, 2018 as 12 high school students brought the work of a legendary playwright to life at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Los Angeles Regional Finals.

A NEW GENERATION TAKES THE TAPER

A DJ spinning and high school students—Center Theatre Group Student Ambassadors—greeting guests on The Music Center Plaza were the first clues that this night was all about a new generation. The Ambassadors encouraged audience members to step into the shoes of August Wilson’s characters (literally) by taking photos behind life-sized standees designed by students in a recent costume design workshop. They also set the tone for the night with an engagement activity that asked audience members to think about the people in their family or community whose stories need to be told. By the time the crowd filled the Taper, they were primed to be immersed in Wilson’s work and inspired by the young people making their voices heard. Keeping the energy high were DJ Brutha Gimel, whose song choices were inspired by the characters the finalists portrayed, and projection designer Hana S. Kim, who streamed photos from The Plaza and quotes from the students onto the set. Alumni hosts Rhyver White and Rhenzy Feliz—former program participants— kicked off the evening with a welcome and some reminiscing about their last time onstage at the Taper. They were followed by Janice Wallace, representing the Center Theatre Group Affiliates, the program’s presenting sponsor. Then, master of ceremonies Pat Harvey of CBS2 News introduced the student performers.

OUR AUGUST WILSON PROGRAM The 12 performances at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals are just a glimpse into an educational journey that impacts the lives of the hundreds of students who participate in Center Theatre Group’s August Wilson Program annually. This year, 145 students representing 32 schools had the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops and preliminary auditions, where they received written feedback from theatre professionals. Fifty-four students advanced to the semi-final auditions. The 12 regional finalists spent 20 hours honing their craft with Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists and staff before taking the stage at the Taper. In addition, four Los Angeles schools are participating in the August Wilson In-School Residency, a semester-long personal and artistic study of Wilson and his theatrical contribution to society led by Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists. These students— from Ánimo Leadership Charter High School, Carson High School, East L.A. Performing Arts Magnet, and Ellen Ochoa Prep Academy— and their teachers attended the Regional Finals as part of their curriculum. “The primary mission of the Center Theatre Group Affiliates is education for young people and building the future population of the theatre,” said Affiliates Vice President Janice Wallace. “We think August Wilson is a very important American playwright, and it’s important to preserve his legacy and carry it down through generations. We love to watch the enthusiasm of the kids who are involved.”

Continued from page 10

Finally, it was time for the regional finalists—AuDrya Clayton, Mylah Eaton, Natalia Echeverria, Hannah Franklin, Sarah-Michelle Guei, Jackson Lewis, Nico Moreta, Gerardo Navarro, Dominique Payne, K.J. Powell, Tairah Umeadi, and Daniel Velez—to perform their monologues. Over five months, they had made it through two rounds of auditions; they had come together as an ensemble to support one another through training and rehearsals. Their voices, speaking August Wilson’s words, filled the Taper where Wilson once worked, bringing his stories of 20TH century African American life into the 21ST century. During intermission, celebrity judges (including members of our Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom cast) had the unenviable task of choosing two performers to advance to the National Finals at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre on May 7 alongside students from 11 other cities. Hannah Franklin of Orange County School of the Arts—who was also a 2017 regional finalist—was selected for first place and Gerardo Navarro of Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts earned second place. Jackson Lewis of Agoura High School earned third place, and was chosen by his peers as the winner of the Ensemble Award, for the regional finalist who best represents the spirit of ensemble. All 12 students agreed that this experience has had a profound impact on their lives. “I’d always been taught to project onstage, but during the coaching I was instead told to speak so that I could be heard. That really changed my mindset,” said Hannah Franklin. “Rather than projecting for the sake of projecting, I would speak so that my character’s important words could be heard throughout the theatre. This is just one life lesson of many that will continue to influence my craft.” Navarro added, “Setting foot and performing on that stage was one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced. There was an unexplainable presence that I truly believe was August Wilson himself. It was, simply, magic.”

What are the things that keep human beings up at night?

CTG-AHM_PROG_0618-Humans.indd 5

6/6/18 5:52 PM

Kristin Leahey (KL): What was your impulse behind writing The Humans? Stephen Karam (SK): I was thinking a lot about the things that were keeping me up at night and that got me thinking about existential human fears: fear of poverty, sickness, losing the love of someone…. Was there a way to actually tell a story that might elicit some of those fears—or provide some thrills—while also talking about how human beings cope with them? And by the time I was done, I had written a family play or, as I think of it now, a family thriller. KL: Could you share some of the highlights of working on the play in 2014 with Chicago’s American Theater Company (ATC), then in 2015 with New York’s Roundabout Theatre Company, and eventually on Broadway in 2016?

Sarah Steele and Cassie Beck. Photo by Brigitte Lacombe.

SK: The gift of new work when it goes well is you get to grow the piece with other artists and countless people behind the scenes. The Roundabout production was set, but the theatre allowed for the World premiere at ATC in Chicago, because I thought it would help me to develop the play in preparation for New York. Also, I thought it was a great play for Chicago, where audiences are accustomed to taking risks, especially with new work. I did a lot of intense rewriting while we were in rehearsals for the production. And then we went to Roundabout, and it was almost like doing it over again, because there was a new director, Joe Mantello, as well as a new cast. I learned a lot from the first production, so the company I think had a stronger script as a result. The Roundabout’s Off-Broadway space is about 400 seats, so it’s actually quite big. Therefore, it wasn’t a huge shift in terms of rethinking the play when we moved to Broadway. The set nestled well into the Helen Hayes Theatre and then we transferred to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, which is larger. It was interesting to see how the actors adjusted their

performances to each of the different spaces…but, you know, the same dilapidated two-story duplex set followed us everywhere. KL: After having the experience of working on the premiere in Chicago and now, in many ways, coming full circle with the national tour, what are you looking forward to with this new journey for The Humans? SK: You can probably tell from the play that I’m from Pennsylvania. Any time I do a new play, I’m actually thinking, “Will it ever find its way across the country?” “Will it ever find its way to Pennsylvania or Arizona or Washington State?” My first attendance at a professional theatre was seeing touring shows that made their way to the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. I ushered at the Masonic in high school to get free tickets. They were large musicals but never “straight plays.” There’s a special magic in taking a play, a piece like this, across the country. I just feel [that it] really connects to what it meant for me to see theatre growing up, so I’m excited to see something that I wrote have a chance to travel.

KL: I really admire that your work, such as Speech & Debate, Sons of the Prophet, and The Humans, grapples with immense sociopolitical ideas, but at its core are these tangible, intimate relationships between characters. How do you strike this balance? SK: Instead of running away from the larger questions we’re struggling with, I realized that my plays can come from them. With The Humans, I originally thought the way to address the play’s big ideas was a lot noisier, with a lot more bells and whistles, but through the writing process of stripping things away, by the end, I was staring at six damaged and lovely souls, who audiences would watch be hurt and laugh and cry and love. Things become universal, and thus reverberate more precisely. It’s sort of the epic via the intimate. KL: It’s interesting considering that sometimes the most intimate of subjects can also be the most political. SK: I didn’t start The Humans by saying, “I’m going to write about the dying middle class.” I think that’s a losing game, only because you can’t make people watch a play like that—at least I don’t think so—unless there are complex, multidimensional people at the center of the conflict. That’s where audiences invest, when they actually care about the struggle of the people onstage. If I get too bogged down in ideas, I don’t tend to write so well. I feel like my plays become more political by focusing on human behavior. As a playwright, you can’t write about what it means to be alive and not be political. And if you’re writing about what it means to be alive today, you’re going to end up writing a political play…. I never would have predicted or imagined that Donald Trump would have become president. Nor would I have ever suspected that somebody with his particular background, trust fund, and golden toilets would be the person who ends up connecting to the Erik Blakes of the world. KL: I really appreciated the March 2017 article you wrote for American Theatre—“Guides for Survival in the Trump Simulacrum.” You wrote, “Artists and philosophers are better at processing complex realities during unreal times.”

I was staring at six damaged and lovely souls, who audiences would watch be hurt and laugh and cry and love. Things become universal, and thus reverberate more precisely. It’s sort of the epic via the intimate. politicians are interested in the sincere question that The Humans was born out of, too—“What are the things that keep human beings up at night?” And sometimes, for the good of the people, they think about these things because they want to know what we care and are worried about. And then, of course, when politicians are campaigning, they can also play into these fears in really dark and scary ways. The play got caught for a while in a political discussion that I certainly welcomed, but I think part of the reason it did is that there’s an overlap of interest in watching politicians also try to take the temperature of what’s keeping people up at night. KL: What was it like working with Joe Mantello on the project? We’re so thrilled that he’s helming the tour. SK: It was incredible! A good collaborator like Joe just makes your work stronger. I think what I love about working with him is that he is uncompromising, has an incredible eye, and understood the play from the second he read it. I can’t really overstate what a gift that is. I feel somewhat giddy that we’re going to get to do it again. I should also note that the play is a comedy. I’m somebody who loves laughing when I’m seeing any play myself. But you can’t just tell people a play is funny; you have to let them decide that for themselves. But of course, watching any family interact for 90 minutes is going to be partially, if not largely, hilarious.

SK: Our job as writers is to tell the truth and be as honest as possible—avoid propaganda or a tidy resolution. And PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE P7

For Love of Musicals, and California

It was not love at first curtain call for Neta Hicks and the art of theatre. In fact, Neta barely made it to the curtain call on her first trip to Broadway. Her senior year in high school, the Indiana native and some friends saw Bye Bye Birdie on a school trip to New York City. They didn’t care for the show, and few friends even walked out at intermission.

When they moved to the state in 1969, “it was called the Golden State because of its great school system and agriculture,” explained Jim. He’s worried about the deterioration of the education system. But he believes that theatre “can help instill higher values in children so they can help return California to its golden age.”

JIM AND NETA HICKS GIVE BECAUSE THEATRE IS GOOD FOR THE GOLDEN STATE

Fast forward about 15 years. Neta and her husband, Jim—who grew up together in Indiana and began dating after Jim graduated from Purdue University in 1961—were new to Southern California when friends invited them to a show at the Ahmanson Theatre. They were hooked. Except for a brief interval during and after Phantom of the Opera’s sit-down at the Ahmanson in the early 1990s, they have been season ticket members ever since.

“We love everything you do for the kids of Southern California,” added Neta.

“We both love musicals!” said Neta. Her favorites include South Pacific and Cinderella, while Jim is a die-hard fan of Jersey Boys and The Sound of Music, which he saw three times each. They also love the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Jim, who runs their small family foundation, said he “likes to give to good organizations that give back to society.” In addition to Center Theatre Group, they include the Los Angeles Mission, City of Hope, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Support from patrons like Jim and Neta Hicks makes everything Center Theatre Group does possible, from education and community programs to commissioning artists. Please visit CTGLA.org/Support for more information about joining the Inner Circle. The Hicks family, Neta (seated) and (l–r) Steve, Grady, Jim, Pat, and Jennifer

The Hickses became members of Center Theatre Group’s Inner Circle in 2003; they donate because of their devotion to theatre, education, and California.

The Hickses also appreciate the benefits they’ve received as Guardian-level donors, including getting improved, accessible seats, being hosted in the Founders Room at the Ahmanson, seat gifts, and support from Center Theatre Group’s Institutional Advancement staff.

When they aren’t giving back, they’re spending time with their four children—Pat, Grady, Steve, and Jennifer, all of whom live in the area—rooting for the Dodgers (often with their Boston Terrier, Dodger), and enjoying good wine at home or on trips to Napa Valley and Santa Barbara County.
