Dear Audience Member, This month at Center Theatre Group we’re showcasing the depth and breadth of our stages, the synergy of the Los Angeles theatre community, and the genius of American theatre right now. We knew we were lucky to have the opportunity and space to produce the first two plays in Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Elliot Trilogy—2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner Water by the Spoonful at the Mark Taper Forum—concurrently. We got even luckier when Latino Theater Company decided to join us and produce the third and final installment of Elliot’s story, The Happiest Song Plays Last. It is the first time all three plays will run at the same time in one city. These three remarkable plays definitely stand on their own, but the opportunity to see the completed trilogy together and to follow Quiara’s characters through their entire arc is truly impactful. I hope you enjoy the show, and I hope you return (if you’re not returning already) to immerse yourself in one of the great achievements of 21STcentury theatre—an experience you can only have in Los Angeles.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP INAUGURAL DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM KICKS OFF Last month, five Los Angeles County schools—Harrison Elementary, Hope Street Elementary, Humphreys Avenue Elementary, La Ballona Elementary, and Ritter Elementary—began a 17-week musical theatre residency as part of this year’s inaugural Los Angeles Disney Musicals in Schools program. Educators at each school are partnering with Center Theatre Group teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph, and music direct. After a Disney KIDS musical performance at each school, the program will culminate in a Student Share Celebration at the Ahmanson Theatre on May 21, 2018.

College and graduate students got feedback on their new musical theatre projects in a special, entirely free Creating a Musical Workshop with Spamilton creator Gerard Alessandrini on December 5, 2017. After brief presentations of their works-in-progress, the students received feedback from Alessandrini; afterward, they received complimentary tickets to Spamilton. “What an amazing opportunity!” said Linda Russano Garcia, a graduate student at California State University, Northridge. “Gerard’s openness and generosity to share his experiences, and the critiques he made, were appreciated. Then, to be able watch his words come to life onstage put his feedback into even greater perspective.”
CENTER THEATRE GROUP GIVES BACK The Center Theatre Group staff celebrated the holiday season by giving back (and wearing their ugliest sweaters and festive attire). Departments across the company competed to collect the most items of clothing—over 4,000 in all— for US Vets and the Siempre Para Los Niños orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. And a snack sale featuring home-baked goods at The Music Center Annex and Kirk Douglas Theatre raised over $750 for Puerto Rico hurricane relief.

Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Stunning Elliot Trilogy Lands in Los Angeles Quiara Alegría Hudes’ award-winning Elliot Trilogy of plays—Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, Water by the Spoonful, and The Happiest Song Plays Last—have appeared at theatres around the country over the past decade. Now, for the first time, they are onstage concurrently in one city. From January 27 through March 19, lucky and ambitious Angelenos can experience all three works in anywhere from seven weeks to a single weekend, courtesy of Center Theatre Group and the Latino Theater Company. “It’s really thrilling. You see one play, and you get that beginning, middle, end—you get that story. But you see two, three of the plays, you get that sense of family all of a sudden,” said Hudes. “You’ve gone through it over time with this family. So I think the ending of the entire trilogy lands in a deeper way.
for us—and really for anyone in Los Angeles who loves theatre,” he said. “We’re taking advantage of the breadth and depth of our programming and of the rich theatre ecosystem of our city by joining forces with the Latino Theater Company to tell an epic story from start to finish.” Hudes wrote the first play in the trilogy, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue (onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre through February 25, 2018), in isolation. But she realized that she had more to say about Elliot, a character based on her cousin, who enlisted in the Marines a few months before President George W. Bush declared war on Iraq. Elliot weaves together his story of going to war in the Middle East with the war stories of his father in Vietnam and his grandfather in Korea.
“I started to realize there’s this generation of kids fleeing the fallout of a domestic war—which was the war on The laughs get deeper, the pain gets more drugs—and actually engaging in a war abroad,” said pronounced. Hopefully the plays are resonating Hudes. “And of course as the war raged on in Iraq, off of each other in ways that will yield rewards.” the story was not done. These young people started coming home and bringing a lot home with them. Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael And so I decided, this story’s going to continue, and Ritchie is confident that audiences will be rewarded this is not just going to be the snippet of that story of by the opportunity to immerse themselves in Hudes’ lost innocence—it’s going to be an arc of, how does trilogy. “This is a special moment for our patrons and a child go from that to becoming an adult?” Continues on page 12

A few years later, Hudes began interviewing a different cousin, who had been in recovery for decades, for the play that became Pulitzer Prize winner Water by the Spoonful (onstage at the Mark Taper Forum through March 11, 2018). In Water by the Spoonful, the story of Elliot—who has recently returned home from Iraq—collides with a group of recovering addicts in an online chatroom.
production February 17 – March 19, 2018), finds Elliot “starting to forge his way toward an adulthood that he is choosing and also a life that has chosen him. I wanted to return to the roots, and I chose a very particular Puerto Rican tradition of music, which is called música jíbara, which is basically music from the mountains—folk music,” explained Hudes.
Hudes had modeled Elliot after the Bach preludes and fugues she grew up playing on the piano. “I realized I needed different music for each play,” she said. “So Water by the Spoonful uses jazz. It’s about a moment in this young man’s life when he’s really battling with the internal demons from his childhood and also from his time on the battlefield. So I look at John Coltrane, and in particular I look at a moment in Coltrane’s musical life when he’s switching from a more recognizable, consonant jazz vocabulary to something called free jazz, when there’s much more dissonance at play.”
“I really tried to write the three trilogy plays as a musical score, to feel triumphant at times, to feel pensive at times, to feel forte and piano, and to have all the dynamics you would want out of a great symphony piece or a great mix tape,” she added. “The first

play creates almost a prelude to the second and third, which are bigger and more epic and messier, and they deal with the fallout of the messiness of the individuals involved.” But that doesn’t mean they have to be seen chronologically. “They are not written to necessarily be absorbed that way,” said Hudes. She added with a laugh, “You could three-card-monte it, probably.” Visit ElliotTrilogy.org to learn more.

BLOCK PARTY The Block Party Is Back at the Douglas
In March 2018, the Kirk Douglas Theatre opens its doors for the second year of our annual Block Party program, a celebration of Los Angeles theatre featuring three recent productions from local companies. Over the course of months, 50 staff members across seven departments ranging from the Box Office to Artistic Development to Education painstakingly reviewed the 50-someodd applications that poured in from across the city. The result is a thrilling display of some of the best L.A. theatre in the last year—Playwrights’ Arena’s Bloodletting, Critical Mass Performance Group’s Ameryka, and Celebration Theatre’s Die, Mommie, Die!
The second show, onstage April 19–29, is AMERYKA from Critical Mass Performance Group.
“Block Party is already a favorite tradition for the organization,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “We cherish the opportunity to work alongside others in the L.A. theatre community and look forward to continuing to learn, share, and experience with our colleagues.”
“One of the unique aspects of AMERYKA is that it is an ensemble-created piece. We developed it together, from nothing, over six years. Each moment of the show is filled with the specific energy, ideas, and inspiration of each person in the company,” said Founding Artistic Director Nancy Keystone, who also wrote and directed AMERYKA in collaboration with the company.
The Artistic Directors of the selected companies echoed Ritchie’s sentiment. “The two things that always move me about the Los Angeles theatre community are the incredible and exciting diversity of the artists and the work, and the sense of collegiality and sincere support that people bring to each other,” said Critical Mass Performance Group Founding Artistic Director Nancy Keystone. The three Block Party shows are emblematic of all this, as well as the quality of work being produced.
Block Party opens with BLOODLETTING by Boni B. Alvarez from Playwrights’ Arena, onstage March 29 – April 8.
Founded in 1985, Critical Mass Performance Group invents categorybusting new works, including historical-poetical epics, adaptations of classic texts, intimate interactive salons, public happenings, and social practice art, performed in traditional and alternative spaces. Charting a course that begins with the American Revolution and continues through the struggle for civil rights, the fight against Communism, and the war on terror, AMERYKA is an epic exploration of human longing for freedom and justice.
The final Block Party show, which plays the Douglas May 10–20, is Celebration Theatre’s DIE, MOMMIE, DIE!
Celebration Theatre was founded in 1982 by gay rights pioneer Charles Rowland and is dedicated to telling the stories of the LGBTQIA community. Today, the company is led by Co-Artistic Directors Michael Matthews and Michael A. Shepperd. DIE, MOMMIE, DIE! is the story of an aging Hollywood actress (played by Drew Droege in drag) scheming to kill her husband. It’s an over-the-top comedy of gay Hollywood proportions.
“The biggest thing about our entire company is that we really care about each other, we really like each other,” said Co-Artistic Director Michael A. Playwrights’ Arena is dedicated to discovering, nurturing, and producing bold Shepperd. “We drink together, we laugh together, we create together, and new works for the stage written exclusively by Los Angeles playwrights. “I I think that sense of community that we have at Celebration is reflected in hope that Block Party will help Playwrights’ Arena prepare for its move to a permanent, larger theatre starting in 2019,” said Founding Artistic Director Jon the work that we do.” Lawrence Rivera. “We hope to leverage our experience by learning valuable That sounds like exactly what we hope for the 2018 edition of information about marketing, development, and board expansion.” Block Party: drinks in the Douglas lobby, laughter (and maybe some tears) in the audience, creation by some of our city’s BLOODLETTING is the story of a woman who travels to the Philippines to spread most talented theatre artists and companies, and a sense her father’s ashes, and discovers her supernatural powers in the process. “It’s a special production because it is set on a remote Philippine island and shines of community for everyone involved. light on native folklore through the eyes of Filipino Americans,” said Rivera.
Block Party receives major support from Aliza Karney Guren and Marc Guren, with generous funding also provided by Joni and Miles Benickes. Additional support is provided by a City of Culver City Performing Arts Grant.

When was the last time you talked to a playwright? How about someone at Center Theatre Group who wasn’t helping you out with a ticket? Playwrights, patrons, and theatre company come together in some configuration every night that we operate, yet we rarely have a chance to engage in meaningful dialogues with one another.
TRIPLE PLAY PUTS
PLAYWRIGHTS, PATRONS, AND THEATRES
That’s why, in 2013, Center Theatre Group jumped at the chance to participate in Triple Play, a national initiative led by the Theatre Development Fund and Theatre Bay Area. Triple Play “tried to put us all in the same conversation about the value of new work for our audiences—why people go to see it and what obstacles get in their way—so artists and theatres can understand how to make a healthier new play ecology for audiences,” explained Center Theatre Group Literary Manager & Artistic Engagement Strategist Joy Meads.
IN CONVERSATION clearly understand what a play was about before they decided whether or not to come see it. The request I had made turned out to be the best way to keep people from coming to see this play that I dearly loved.”
Triple Play began with conversations in a handful of cities among theatre professionals and local artists “about our perception of the demand for new plays,” said Meads. Center Theatre Group hosted the Los Angeles conversation, which was “lively, passionate, and inspiring,” said Meads, “and made us eager to investigate and get some real information to back up all of our assumptions and expectations.”
Playwright Prince Gomolvilas found a number of his assumptions about audiences turned upside down during the second set of discussions. He was surprised that “audiences don’t care about the ‘World premiere’ designation (and some even see it as a negative because World premieres are ‘untested’).” He also learned that “audiences don’t follow playwrights, don’t know their names, can’t remember their names”; story or synopsis is how people decide whether or not to see a play.
Over the next few years, local playwrights and patrons came together for two stages of focus groups and one-on-one interviews. The first took place during the World premiere of eventual Pulitzer Prize finalist Marjorie Prime at the Mark Taper Forum. Meads had been a champion of Marjorie Prime and was taking notes at the interview sessions, which focused on single-ticket buyers who had already seen the play.
Gomolvilas and Meads’ observations were supported by interviews and surveys collected from theatregoers around the country. The results of the entire Triple Play study are available at theatrebayarea.org. Center Theatre Group also hosted a “share-out” that brought together members of the Los Angeles theatre community and the organizers of Triple Play to talk about the findings.
“One of the things I enjoyed the most when I first read Marjorie Prime was discerning its mysteries from page to page, and my evolving understanding of what was happening,” she recalled. “I had gone to our Marketing department and ask that they not give any spoilers away.” She discovered she was not, in fact, doing the audience a favor. “People kept saying they wanted to
Meads said that Triple Play is already informing her work. “I’m trying to be a partner with our audiences,” she said. “When people see new work, they need more information in order to feel safe taking a risk on it. We need to make sure they understand why a play is exciting or urgent or speaks to the time, and why the playwright felt a pressing need to tell this story right now.”

“AS A WRITER YOU WRITE IN ISOLATION, BUT THEATRE IS ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY,” playwright Deborah Stein told a group of donors on November 30, 2017 at a special Artists and Educators Forum event at the home of Jody and David Lippman. She went on to explain the value of Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop, which creates a community for a group of local playwrights each year as they create new works. “To have a writers’ group like this is a lifeline. It keeps you going. Self-doubt creeps in while you’re all by yourself,” she said. “To hear your work out loud and get the validation of people laughing where you put a joke, or being moved—or even asking questions and people being confused by things—is very useful.”
“One of the special things about the group is we’re there strictly because Center Theatre Group makes so much space for the wide range of our creative exploration,” said Morriseau. “We were all able to support each other’s different ideas and help each other cultivate the different stories we wanted to tell on our own.” She was grateful for the group’s diversity as well. “I had a very emotional moment in our last three-day retreat, where I looked around at our group, I looked at the stories we were telling, I looked at the kind of actors we were going to have in the room because of the kind of stories we were writing, and I thought, ‘Oh this is the community I want to live in,’” she recalled. “I felt so full, learning from all these artists and their cultural perspectives.”
Miles and Joni Benickes founded the Artists and Educators Forum five years ago to support Center Theatre Group programs like the L.A. Writers’ Workshop. Events such as the evening at the Lippmans’ are one benefit members enjoy. “We can pull the curtain back and find out what happens in the creative An Artists and Educators Forum Event with Playwrights process,” said Miles in his Deborah Stein and Dominique Morriseau introduction to the evening. “How does great art get up onstage?” In order to find out, he turned the conversation over to Center Theatre Group Teaching Artist Leslie Ishii.
DONORS GO INSIDE THE L.A. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
Ishii was moderating a discussion between Stein, who wrote and codirected The Wholehearted, which played the Kirk Douglas Theatre in December 2016, and playwright Dominique Morisseau, whose recent work includes the book for Ain’t Too Proud—The Temptations Musical (Berkeley Rep) and Pipeline (Lincoln Center Theater). Both playwrights participated in the 2016/17 L.A. Writers’ Workshop. The writers met once a month beginning in December, just after the presidential election; three writers brought 20-30 pages of new writing to each meeting. “It was a really special year to have this community of artists—to have this vehicle and this place and this community to be working through all these things that were coming up,” said Stein.
Morriseau, who is also a writer on Showtime’s Shameless, talked about how important it is to keep writing for the stage while also writing for the screen. The L.A. Writers’ Workshop “saved my life artistically because you don’t want to let go of one side of what you do because you’re branching out into other sides,” she said. After the initial conversation, Stein and Morriseau each read a brief excerpt from the plays they wrote in the Writers’ Workshop, followed by a question-and-answer session with donors.
“I loved the evening at the Lippmans’ for so many reasons,” said Center Theatre Group Board Member Monica Horan Rosenthal. “The playwrights were both so articulate and compelling when reading their outstanding work and sharing insights into their processes. But I was also moved and inspired by comments made by donors present who shared their passion for deepening the culture of our city and cultivating an audience from the spectrum of its population by developing great work.” Top: Donors at the home of Jody and David Lippman. Q: What is it like to return to the Center Theatre Group stage? A: To be back here, this time at the Taper, is very exciting and fulfilling. My first performance in L.A. was at the Ahmanson Theatre in Romeo and Juliet, directed by the late Sir Peter Hall in 2001, and thanks to last year’s Block Party at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, I was able to perform there in Citizen: An American Lyric. Now the Taper makes a perfect trifecta, and with a beautiful play and cast to boot.
BERNARD K. ADDISON CHUTES&LADDERS “It’s searching for the heart, the rhythm, and the soul of this person within me.” Q: How have you prepared for the role of Chutes&Ladders? A: I have a friend who has a family member dealing with crack cocaine addiction, so not only did she help me with the audition; she has been a tremendous source as someone who has a personal connection to what addiction does to a family. I also find the dramaturgical information from Center Theatre Group Literary Manager Joy Meads to be very informative. But ultimately, it’s searching for the heart, the rhythm, and the soul of this person within me. Once you do that and follow the guideposts in the text, you begin to find his voice, and then my job is to get out of the way and let him speak. Q: How does your work as a Teaching Artist (including at Center Theatre Group!) and educator inform your performances? A: As a Teaching Artist, I get to dissect a script over and over, finding windows of entry that I can engage an audience in when we are discussing a production. Also, I have seen so many shows, and so many great performances—it makes you appreciate the work and share that appreciation with young audiences as well as the older, traditional evening audience.
JOSH BRAATEN FOUNTAINHEAD “I knew I had to do everything in my power to try to be a part of this production.” Q: What was it like to read Water by the Spoonful for the first time? A: I was at a hotel with my family, so I went into the bathroom after everyone had gone to sleep, shut the door, and read the play. When I finished reading around midnight, I knew I had to do everything in my power to try to be a part of this production. Q: How have you prepared for the role of Fountainhead? A: I studied 12-step recovery for all forms of addiction, from food to narcotics. I tried to explore many types of people and their respective obsessions and compulsions and see what common denominators exist in addicts. Q: What inspires you? A: It’s so beautiful to be in a rehearsal room and just sit in a piece of art for weeks. After the first day, I realized that I’ve been away from live theatre for far too long. And I’m inspired by this thoughtful story that can command my absolute attention and take me on an emotional journey.

SEAN CARVAJAL ELLIOT
SYLVIA KWAN ORANGUTAN
“When you get a cast that’s amazing like this, you’ve hit the jackpot.”
“I turn to my plants to remind myself of perseverance and how everything alive perseveres like the characters in the show.”
Q: What resonates with you about the role of Elliot? A. His struggle with family, and his relationship with Odessa—that struggle of trying to explore this messed-up relationship with his mother. Elliot is on a journey of trying to come to terms with who he is, and how to be real with himself. There’s this question of what kind of future we will have—if we’re able to change ourselves and confront ourselves versus if we choose not to face ourselves and our demons. There are a lot of themes in this play that I think are so important and really resonated with me. Q: You played Elliot in a 2016 production of Water by the Spoonful. How does it feel to come back to this show now? A. That production had a very short process: two and a half weeks of rehearsals and a three-week run. So the biggest thing is having more time to explore the role. Two years ago I don’t think I really understood Elliot, and I didn’t understand his journey. I think that age and time are allowing me to be more open and empathetic to what he’s going through. I have a different set of eyes. And I’m learning from Lileana Blain-Cruz, our director. And of course when you have a cast that’s new, the play is so different. Q. What’s it like to be making your Los Angeles theatre debut? A. I haven’t explored much of L.A. yet, but I’m excited to be here. This cast blew my mind, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to play with them. It’s a cast that’s so open, they’re all heart, and it’s a great team. And the theatre’s wonderful, and it’s my first time in L.A. I’ve never been out West. I’m a New York City kid, so it’s a crazy change. The pace is different.
Q: How did you know you wanted to be in Water by the Spoonful? A: I was struck by how unique the structure of the play was. Quiara Alegría Hudes has a way of writing that coaxes emotions out of her audience without their really knowing why. I think the way she writes is so honest and reflective of the human condition that we cannot help but identify ourselves in her characters. I loved the role of Orangutan because she is a character who used to operate and view life through her head, not her heart, and during this play she transitions to someone who operates and views her life through her heart and not her head. I’m so lucky to be playing a character that is going through her personal hero’s journey, if you will. Q: How have you prepared for the role of Orangutan? A: A lot of my preparation has been exposing myself to her world visually—looking at the different places she inhabits and how those different environments affect who she is and where she is in her journey. I’ve been listening to the music found throughout the show, and I’ve also been listening to a lot of music that makes me feel more connected to Orangutan as a character. I daydream about what her life is like and what she thinks about. And I turn to my plants (I’m an avid gardener) to remind myself of perseverance and how everything alive perseveres like the characters in the show. It reminds me to continuously discover the different ways that my character perseveres, too. PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P7

Q: What is your favorite thing about this cast and crew? A: This cast and crew is so full of love and acceptance. From the first day you could sense that we were in a safe space for us to explore and create artistically while being true to ourselves, bringing our personal histories and experiences into creating the same world. I love how everyone brings their A game to every rehearsal while maintaining the playfulness and joy of creating and acting. I love that during this experience I’ve turned to my cast mates to exclaim how much I love acting and they agree, having rediscovered the same thing. I love how energetic and inspiring our director is.
Q: What inspires you? A: Stories that are so infused with life that you wonder if the writer has been living her life next to you all along. Stories that explore the Latino experience in all its complexities. Stories about women.
NICK MASSOUH PROFESSOR AMAN, GHOST, POLICEMAN “I consider myself a storyteller, whether I’m acting, writing, or directing.”
KEREN LUGO YAZMIN “[Hudes] is one of the best writers out there, and I’m inspired by her beautiful, complex, and profound stories that center on the Latino experience.” Q: What do you love most about the role of Yazmin and the work of Quiara Alegría Hudes? A: I love Yazmin’s courage to finally accept the things that make her who she is and her courage to start over. Quiara’s work is LIFE. There is no other way to describe it. She is one of the best writers out there, and I’m inspired by her beautiful, complex, and profound stories that center on the Latino experience. Q: What is your favorite thing about this cast and crew? A: The energy from everyone here is uplifting. Truly a dream. I love how lively everyone is. There is a lot of dancing and randomly bursting into song in the rehearsal room. It’s a fun group.
Q: What resonates with you about this play and these roles? A: I love the writing. As an actor, to be able to work on beautiful language is very inspiring and freeing. I also think that the material really resonates with me on a lot of levels, having recently experienced loss myself. And in terms of the characters that I play, I always love when there’s a nice Arab-American or Middle Eastern perspective in material today, and when it’s done with care and thoughtfulness. Q: What’s it like to move from stage to screen and back? A: With theatre there’s such an opportunity to dig into the material and a space to discover your character and the story in a collaborative manner. Whereas with film and television, the time is so much more compressed that the collaboration is much less, and it’s much more upon you to just bring your performance to the table. To sit in a rehearsal room and do the work is why we do acting. Q: What inspires you? A: Stories. I consider myself a storyteller, whether I’m acting, writing, or directing. The power of stories is something I love to create, share, watch, learn from.

So to come back and play this character just takes me deeper into this whole experience of Elliot’s world, and his journey through life with this incredibly complicated family. Q: What resonates with you about Odessa? A: There’s something about a person who is seeking redemption for their past sins, and how they think that the entire world responds to them as this person who’s committed this act, so they see themselves through what they presume to be the judgment of others. I feel that her daily struggle to just get up and be her truest self and deal with everything that she’s done in the past that has led her up to this moment and to become this person who is committed to saving other people is extraordinary.

ODESSA
“I literally feel like a kid.” Q: In 2014 you appeared in The Happiest Song Plays Last, the third play in the Elliot Trilogy. (Water by the Spoonful is the second.) What is it like to return to this story? A: Odessa was mentioned in The Happiest Song Plays Last, but it really talks more about Ginny, and I played Yaz.
Q: What excites you about returning to the Taper stage? A: I did Intimate Apparel here with Viola Davis, and I have been wanting to return for such a long time. It’s really a beautiful theatre with theatre history, which in L.A. is I think kind of a big deal. Being back in rehearsal here, it feels like there’s really room to explore and to organically have these characters get to know each other and for the cast to get to know each other through actual play, and talking, and exploring, and really taking our time doing it. I literally feel like a kid.
Water by the Spoonful is part of Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Elliot Trilogy, which begins with Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

BAD FIT
Barbara & Andrew Leigh
American women have been suffering!
GOOD FIT
Anne & Michael Landsburg
A [Fig. A ] The woman on the left is
wearing a properly fitted, cut and sew, underwire bra made in Europe. The wire rests comfortably under the breast and against the body, encasing all of the breast tissue. She can barely feel it. The band fits snug and level, taking most of the weight off the shoulders. Her breasts are centered and lifted, lengthening the waist, and creating a lean and shapely silhouette.
B [Fig. B] The woman on the right
has gone to a department store to be fitted. They don’t carry her size (32G), so they gave her what they called a “sister size”: 38DD. The band is far too loose and the cup is allowing her breasts to push out at the sides and bottom. The loose band has ridden up to her shoulder blades and all the weight is on her shoulders.
