Dear Audience Member, For me, there’s nothing more exciting than building a new musical and presenting it to the world. If you’re at the Ahmanson for Soft Power, you are part of an act of creation that began when I first sat down for breakfast with David Henry Hwang almost four years ago. I had a commission and a slot in the Taper’s 50TH Season. He had a great idea for a play. Time passed, and that play blossomed into a partnership with Jeanine Tesori and a musical at the Ahmanson. You’re now in my shoes—wondering what these two brilliant artists are going to do with a great idea. I hope you feel as lucky as I do to be anticipating the results of their first collaboration and to be watching a show that’s become even more relevant since David first pitched me the idea that became Soft Power. I feel lucky, too, to have Celebration Theatre’s Die, Mommie, Die! at the Douglas as part of our second annual Block Party. The three participating companies—Playwrights’ Arena, Critical Mass Performance Group, and Celebration—have distinctive missions and styles, but they, and we, have one thing in common: we all call Los Angeles home. With over 250 theatre companies, this city has more theatres per capita than any other metropolitan area. We have the most talented writers, actors, and directors in the world. Los Angeles has the resources and Los Angeles theatres have the ambition to make our town a global theatre destination. Block Party is designed to help move us a little bit closer to this goal. A global theatre destination isn’t possible without the support of a local audience of champions. I hope you count yourself among them.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

We raised our glasses to the Los Angeles theatre community on March 7, 2018 at our Block Party KickOff with specialty drinks, food, music, games, and exclusive ticket offers at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
Before the festivities began, Center Theatre Group and LA Stage Alliance co-hosted a Community Conversation featuring theatre leaders from across the city discussing “Theatre Destination L.A.—Can Collaboration Build New Audiences?” If you want to hear what they had to say about reaching out to new audiences, creating a fresh narrative for L.A. theatre, and the big challenges and opportunities for the art here, watch the full discussion and listen to the podcast at CTGLA.org/CommunityConversations.
CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND ACCESS TASKFORCE invited NBCUniversal Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Craig Robinson to address the company along with our Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson on March 8, 2018. After a conversation about why these values matter—and how attitudes and norms regarding inclusion have changed over the past few decades—staff broke out into newly formed affinity groups that will provide ongoing spaces for community building within our company. The past, present, and future of American theatre converged at the Mark Taper Forum on March 5, 2018 as 12 high school students brought the work of a legendary playwright to life at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Los Angeles Regional Finals.

A DJ spinning and high school students—Center Theatre Group Student Ambassadors—greeting guests on The Music Center Plaza were the first clues that this night was all about a new generation. The Ambassadors encouraged audience members to step into the shoes of August Wilson’s characters (literally) by taking photos behind life-sized standees designed by students in a recent costume design workshop. They also set the tone for the night with an engagement activity that asked audience members to think about the people in their family or community whose stories need to be told. By the time the crowd filled the Taper, they were primed to be immersed in Wilson’s work and inspired by the young people making their voices heard. Keeping the energy high were DJ Brutha Gimel, whose song choices were inspired by the characters the finalists portrayed, and projection designer Hana S. Kim, who streamed photos from The Plaza and quotes from the students onto the set. Alumni hosts Rhyver White and Rhenzy Feliz—former program participants— kicked off the evening with a welcome and some reminiscing about their last time onstage at the Taper. They were followed by Janice Wallace, representing the Center Theatre Group Affiliates, the program’s presenting sponsor. Then, master of ceremonies Pat Harvey of CBS2 News introduced the student performers. Continues on page 12

OUR AUGUST WILSON PROGRAM The 12 performances at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals are just a glimpse into an educational journey that impacts the lives of the hundreds of students who participate in Center Theatre Group’s August Wilson Program annually. This year, 145 students representing 32 schools had the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops and preliminary auditions, where they received written feedback from theatre professionals. Fifty-four students advanced to the semi-final auditions. The 12 regional finalists spent 20 hours honing their craft with Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists and staff before taking the stage at the Taper. In addition, four Los Angeles schools are participating in the August Wilson In-School Residency, a semester-long personal and artistic study of Wilson and his theatrical contribution to society led by Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists. These students— from Ánimo Leadership Charter High School, Carson High School, East L.A. Performing Arts Magnet, and Ellen Ochoa Prep Academy— and their teachers attended the Regional Finals as part of their curriculum. “The primary mission of the Center Theatre Group Affiliates is education for young people and building the future population of the theatre,” said Affiliates Vice President Janice Wallace. “We think August Wilson is a very important American playwright, and it’s important to preserve his legacy and carry it down through generations. We love to watch the enthusiasm of the kids who are involved.”
Finally, it was time for the regional finalists—AuDrya Clayton, Mylah Eaton, Natalia Echeverria, Hannah Franklin, SarahMichelle Guei, Jackson Lewis, Nico Moreta, Gerardo Navarro, Dominique Payne, K.J. Powell, Tairah Umeadi, and Daniel Velez—to perform their monologues. Over five months, they had made it through two rounds of auditions; they had come together as an ensemble to support one another through training and rehearsals. Their voices, speaking August Wilson’s words, filled the Taper where Wilson once worked, bringing his stories of 20TH century African American life into the 21ST century. During intermission, celebrity judges (including members of our Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom cast) had the unenviable task of choosing two performers to advance to the National Finals at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre on May 7 alongside students from 11 other cities. Hannah Franklin of Orange County School of the Arts—who was also a 2017 regional finalist—was selected for first place and Gerardo Navarro of Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts earned second place. Jackson Lewis of Agoura High School earned third place, and was chosen by his peers as the winner of the Ensemble Award, for the regional finalist who best represents the spirit of ensemble. All 12 students agreed that this experience has had a profound impact on their lives. “I’d always been taught to project onstage, but during the coaching I was instead told to speak so that I could be heard. That really changed my mindset,” said Hannah Franklin. “Rather than projecting for the sake of projecting, I would speak so that my character’s important words could be heard throughout the theatre. This is just one life lesson of many that will continue to influence my craft.”

Navarro added, “Setting foot and performing on that stage was one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced. There was an unexplainable presence that I truly believe was August Wilson himself. It was, simply, magic.” (l–r) Alumni hosts Rhyver White and Rhenzy Feliz. Regional finalists in the green room before the show. Photos by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.

Otis College of Art and Design Partners with Center Theatre Group to Introduce Students to Working in Theatre
Otis was equally pleased with the results. “There are a lot of parallels between prop design and product design, and that’s why this is such a wonderful partnership for us,” said Karen Regoli-Arthur. “Product design encompasses creativity and design for a specific use or demographic, while for the theatre the students apply the same skills to a specific play with a particular time and cultural setting.”
A PEACE PIPE. A VIAL OF ARSENIC. A MANGO-WHEAT BEER. A NECKLACE THAT CAN WARD OFF EVIL SPIRITS. AN INTRICATELY CARVED JEWELRY BOX.
Both organizations see the potential for further collaboration and workforce development. “Props is an area we have difficulty hiring into; there are no props programs at colleges or universities in the western states,” said Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan.
These are five of the props that appear in Center Theatre Group’s three Block Party productions this spring—and for five students studying product design at the Otis College of Art and Design, five homework assignments. Otis professors Perri Chasin and Karen Regoli-Arthur reached out to Center Theatre Group in the fall as they began to develop their spring course, “On Prop Design.” A brain-picking session quickly evolved into a partnership where Center Theatre Group staff helped introduce the students to prop design for theatre. The partnership began with a class field trip to The Shop, our costume and prop warehouse in Boyle Heights. Associate Prop Manager Merrianne Nedreberg gave the students a tour and explained the process of creating props for a show. Students also saw the set for Bloodletting (the first show in Block Party) being built, and got their assignment from Nedreberg. Nedreberg asked them to read all three Block Party scripts, highlight every prop used, create prop lists, craft prop bibles (with details on how every prop was purchased or built)—essentially the process she goes through with each new show—and then choose one prop to research, design, and build. After completing the assignment, they arrived at the Douglas with their props, lists, and bibles, and explained their choices to Nedreberg, who also gave them a behind-the-scenes tour.
Nedreberg added, “The awesome goal would be to build a bridge with these talented young people, teach them what theatre props is, and if they’re interested, they could intern for a semester. I think it would be beneficial to them and their career growth.” The students came into the project with little experience with theatre; most had never before read a script. Now, they’ve seen how a play is produced on the ground from start to finish—the experience culminated in everyone seeing Bloodletting at the Douglas—and learned how well product design skills like laser cutting, sculpting, upholstery, and graphic design translate from the product design to the prop world. “I was just delighted” with the partnership, said Perri Chasin. “This has turned out to be for a win-win experience. The students loved the process, they loved making the props, and they are so excited that Center Theatre Group is happy enough that they’re going to display them in the lobby during the run of the show.”

enjoy it,” said Nedreberg. “I was impressed with the props they came up with, and with the thought that they put behind it.” One student—a home brewer—designed a beer bottle that appears in Bloodletting. She chose to make the beer mango-infused because the play is set in the Philippines. “Sometimes in the prop world we are allowed to put a piece of ourselves in the prop versus doing it solely based on a design or a script,” added Nedreberg.
“When you give students an assignment, you don’t know what they’re going to come up with or if they’re going to 14 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

PLAYWRIGHTS ON FIRE
Center Theatre Group Launches the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A.
QUICK: WHAT CITY IS HOME TO THE WORLD’S BEST, MOST DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF PLAYWRIGHTS? THE ANSWER IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY CLEAR: LOS ANGELES. “The level of talent of writers who live and work in L.A. is unmatched by, I would say, any city in the country at this time,” said Center Theatre Group Literary Manager & Artistic Engagement Strategist Joy Meads. “There’s no better place to live if you love playwrights, if you love new work, and if you support important new American voices.”
Indeed, Los Angeles playwrights are on fire and burning to have their work seen and heard more widely, which is why Center Theatre Group is launching the L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A. On June 23, 2018, we’re celebrating some of the freshest and most exciting voices and impulses in the modern American theatre with readings of three new plays by past Center Theatre Group L.A. Writers’ Workshop participants. The Festival marks the first public-facing component of our L.A. Writers’ Workshop, which has supported a group of gifted local playwrights in creating new plays annually since 2005. Each year a new cohort of seven playwrights gathers monthly to share their work with one another and receive developmental and dramaturgical assistance from Center Theatre Group staff. “We’re responding to an ongoing request from the writers who have been through the Workshop,” said Meads. “They’ve told us they’d like a space to share work that is closer to completion—to get to hear the response of an audience and learn from them, and use the platform Center Theatre Group has to help launch some of these works to production.” We sent a call out to playwrights for such works and received “a really great response, with dozens of plays from an incredible range of voices and stories.” A committee of the writers’
peers—fellow Workshop participants who had not submitted to the Festival—and members of Center Theatre Group artistic staff then had to choose three plays to feature. “Talking about the plays was a lot of fun—and narrowing them down was excruciating,” said Meads. Ultimately, they selected Zakiyyah Alexander’s How to Raise a Freeman, Dan O’Brien’s New Life, and Sylvan Oswald’s A Kind of Weather. The plays travel from the New York suburbs and Hollywood to Syria; they tackle race and gender, illness and war. All three writers are accomplished playwrights, the recipients of many prestigious awards and fellowships whose work has been produced around the country. They also all have had success in other media—television, performance pieces, web series, books, and more—while continuing to write for the stage. “Playwriting can be a lonely activity,” said Meads. “That’s particularly true in Los Angeles, where many playwrights write for the screen. Screenwriting is rewarding work, but most playwrights feel hungry for community with their tribe of theatre folk.” The L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival is designed to satiate that hunger and cultivate that community, with a pre-reading reception on Friday evening for Writers’ Workshop participants; three open-to-the-public readings at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on Saturday; and a post-reading celebration at the theatre for all on Saturday evening. “This is one step toward finding a more active and robust way to be an ongoing creative home for Los Angeles playwrights. It’s another way to support the creation of compelling and ambitious new plays, and to showcase the excellence of local playwriting today,” said Meads. The L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival receives support from the Time Warner Foundation.

Students and Educators, Welcome to the Working in Theatre Portal
How do you become a carpenter at a theatre company? What union does a box office staff belong to? When do most dancers get their big breaks? What kind of degree do you need to be a projection designer? For three years, the Center Theatre Group team has been quietly What sets the portal apart from other theatre career videos or populating a small corner of the internet with a veritable library websites is many fold. The emphasis is not on jobs that are overtly of theatre career resources for students that answer these visible—actor, playwright, and the like, although these are included— questions—and so much more. The project began as a video but rather on jobs that students may not realize exist. These include series featuring profiles of theatre professionals on the job. costume technicians, stage managers, and theatrical publicists. Now, students and educators all over the country have access Raising awareness of these career paths can help diversify the people to these videos and a variety of accompanying resources about in them and ensure that there is a deep pool of talent for theatres to the many career paths within the theatre arts. Welcome to the draw from. Center Theatre Group Working in Theatre portal. “For every four to six designers employed at the Mark Taper Forum, “The Working in Theatre portal is designed to help students, there are 30 to 40 technicians needed, but design programs rarely primarily high school and college students, start to think teach the craft of technical theatre,” said Schenkkan. “Because of this about the lifestyle they want to have in the arts. We and because there is so much demand for these types of jobs in the could not find that information anywhere else,” said Next commercial entertainment industry, we’re facing a shortage of many Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan, who runs theatre technicians, like costume drapers and technical directors, in the program along with Center Theatre Group’s workforce Los Angeles. The first step in filling the gap is giving young people development initiatives. “In training programs at the high school information about these jobs and the skills and knowledge they require.” and college level, there is a strong focus on craft, but studying THE WORKING IN THEATRE PORTAL IS ALSO ROOTED IN EQUITY, craft is very different from doing the actual work of it.” DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION. The entrance to the portal is a quiz designed to help students answer the question, “What’s your theatre career path?” “We are trying to serve a city of 4 million people and with that comes Questions about personality, artistic goals, and lifestyle lead great responsibility,” said Director of Education Tyrone Davis. “That students to three possible outcomes—independent artist, means making sure that whether a young person wants to be an actor, hybrid, or manager. Career examples are then provided for each stage manager, or costume designer, they know that theatre is a place personality type. November 1992 marked a titanic shift in American culture when Bill Clinton was elected president—and when Center Theatre Group produced the two parts of Tony Kushner’s landmark play, Angels in America, together for the first time at the Mark Taper Forum. The rest is history…in fact, a new oral history: Isaac Butler and Dan Kois’ recently published The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America. We’re excited to share an excerpt here about that legendary Taper World premiere run, featuring Center Theatre Group Founding Artistic Director Gordon Davidson; actor Ron Leibman, who played Roy Cohn at the Taper and on Broadway, where he won a Tony Award®; former Associate Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, who co-directed Angels in America at the Taper; former Producing Artistic Director Robert Egan; and longtime Taper Production Manager Jonathan Barlow Lee.
AN ‘ANGEL’ TAKES FLIGHT AT THE TAPER An Excerpt from The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America
By the time most of you read this, we will have elected a President and whatever the choice, enormous changes remain to be faced as we all move towards the millennium together. Theatre can be a courageous forum in which the major issues are confronted. In this time of reassessment and change (Perestroika, if you will), we feel particularly excited to be doing Tony Kushner’s play, Angels in America, A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. —Gordon Davidson, “From the Artistic Director,” in the program to the Mark Taper Forum production, 1992
Oskar Eustis: That incredible scene where Louis says Kaddish over Roy Cohn? The first night at the Taper, there was a disturbance in the audience, and I realized there were dozens of people saying the Kaddish along with Louis. It was so moving! People engaged on a level that I had never seen in a theatre piece. Ron Leibman: One of the things I did out there is I went to a lot— well, quite a few—hospices. The AIDS epidemic was flying. I spoke to a lot of guys who were dying. I learned a lot from listening to these guys. When we opened, the word got out. Guys with AIDS, different stages, they wanted to see the play. The theatre went out of its way to make sure they got seats. But they needed to sit, a lot of them, close, because the hearing was going, the eyesight was going. At curtain call we could see the first couple of rows. The lights would spill over. We could see the audience. The audience would generally give a standing ovation, but to see guys who could barely stand, giving us a standing ovation, you know, out of their wheelchairs. We were doing a play, yes, but it became something else. Robert Egan: There was such an explosion of response and support, gratitude, for this play. Continues on page 22

Tony Kushner: The second or third marathon performance was the day after the election of Clinton. And the next week, Time magazine’s cover was “Overturning the Reagan Era,” with a picture of Ronald Reagan upside down. On Time magazine! And that was back when people were still in awe of him. It was like seeing a picture of Jesus with, like, you know, bunny ears. That performance was like a rock concert—people were just—every Reagan joke got, you know, hours of applause and cheering, ’cause people were so excited that this nightmare was looking like it maybe was gonna start to turn around. Eustis: It was suddenly apparent that we were in a different universe, where you just hit the audience and you suddenly realize, Oh, the appetite for this is so much bigger than we thought. Leibman: I thought we’d have a gay audience, a Jewish audience, that would clear out in about a week. I had no idea.
Jonathan Barlow Lee: I think that was part of Gordon wanting to leave them wanting more. There was a lot of buzz about it. Gordon was trying to position it in a way to set the ball to be spiked to Broadway with as much vigor as possible. Kushner: It felt like the play had arrived at the right moment. And so some people said it didn’t matter if Part Two is a piece of garbage—this thing is going to Broadway. Former Public Theater Artistic Director JoAnne Akalaitis: The performance I attended, Frank Rich and Alex Witchel were there. It was like the czar and czarina of theatre culture coming to check it out. Leibman: Then I heard the Shuberts were coming, the Nederlanders were coming. I sort of got it. I realized it was going to have a life after Los Angeles. Jesus Christ, this thing is not going to close in one night! Kushner: Gordon Davidson and I had a long, long talk. He’s one of the founders of the regional theatre movement, and he said, “You don’t have a choice. You have to take this to Broadway.”
Eustis: The run of Angels at the Taper was four weeks, because we didn’t think anyone would want to see it. So it was followed by An Evening with Will Explore an expansive gallery of photos from the Rogers. We shut down Angels in order to have James Taper’s celebrated premiere of Angels in America at Whitmore play Will Rogers to half-empty houses! It CTGLA.org/Timeline. was a nightmare!

Four Years, Two Breakfasts, and One Big Commission Michael Ritchie and David Henry Hwang Discuss the Creation of Soft Power How does a new (play with a) musical get made? To quote Soft Power, “It Just Takes Time.” In this case, that’s four years, 13 readings and workshops, and the partnership of a crackerjack creative team of American theatre all-stars. But before all that, there was breakfast, as Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie and playwright David Henry Hwang recalled recently (over lunch this time). MICHAEL RITCHIE: Nonprofit regional theatres like Center Theatre Group have become the national theatre of America. Collectively, we’re responsible for not only maintaining the art form but pushing it forward by commissioning and developing and producing new plays. We’re uniquely capable of creating new works on a grand scale, without the commercialized limitations of Broadway, because we can give a creative team enough space to realize something that is truly special. And that’s what I think we’ve done with Soft Power. DAVID HENRY HWANG: About four years ago, Michael met me for breakfast, and made me this amazing offer: he wanted to commission a piece from me, and not only that, there was a slot open, so the piece was guaranteed to be produced. Really, who can say no to that? What I was interested in at the time, and what has continued to remain the seed for the show that’s become Soft Power, were two things. Number one, China’s quest for soft power—for intellectual and cultural influence. China is a nation that increasingly has a lot of hard power; most people kind of feel that China’s likely to be the other major superpower if not the superpower of the 21 century. And China has this desire to gain soft power, a desire I began to experience. I would get a lot of meetings with Chinese producers or Chinese theatres, since they wanted to create a Broadway show…and I happen to be the ST
only even nominally Chinese person who’s ever written a Broadway show. Nothing ever came of these meetings, but it was interesting to me that you had a system that wants international artistic and cultural influence but is very top-heavy when it comes to authoritarian power and content restrictions. Number two was, I had seen the recent revival of The King and I. I’ve always loved The King and I, it’s been a show that has moved me since I was a kid. But as I’ve gotten older, there’s this complicated feeling where I know it is kind of inauthentic and making a political point subtly— reinforcing the dominance of the West. But it’s done so beautifully that by the end of it I’m still in tears. RITCHIE: Now one of the things that I find most intriguing about Soft Power is that it’s not a mirror to The King and I, but it certainly follows some of the impulse. It wasn’t until I sat with you at breakfast and you reframed it for me through your eyes that I realized that The King and I is actually demeaning to an entire country and a culture. The basic plot is that a white woman comes to this country and saves itself from its own stupidity by teaching the king how to dance and be nice to his children. HWANG: This idea that it takes a white nanny to come into Siam or Thailand and teach the king how to bring his nation into the community of civilized countries—that’s not that great. It’s a trope that exists consistently in Western stories about the East. I wrote the first draft of the movie that eventually became Seven Years in Tibet. Any time you get a white person in an Asian country who writes a memoir, somehow they end up becoming the advisor to the ruler. And the question is, when we talk about issues like appropriation, how do you express that, how do you replicate that feeling for a general American audience? If we look at appropriation in a future where China is dominant over the US, then I think we begin to perceive that in a different fashion, because we understand the power context. And that’s what the show’s trying to do— a complicated thing for a musical to achieve.

RITCHIE: The first time we talked about the commission, this was going to be a new play—the final show of our 50 Season at the Mark Taper Forum. At our second meeting though, when we sat down to breakfast again about a year and a half later, you had an expanded idea of what you wanted to do with this play.
because she’s a fantastic composer of course, but she’s also a scholar of musical theatre, she understands the form so well.
HWANG: I wanted to do a play that becomes a musical. The first 20 minutes of it would be a contemporary comedy, and then that comedy becomes mythologized, and 50 years down the road it becomes the source material for a beloved East-West musical in China. So we are then watching a Chinese musical based on the incident we saw. And that seemed to me to bring together a twist on The King and I and also this exploration of what would it mean for China to gain soft power, and how soft power would manifest itself in the musical form. So I said, “Michael, I kind of want to do a musical.”
HWANG: Jeanine says that musicals—and I’ve now incorporated this into the play—are an incredibly powerful delivery system. When the music is great, you kind of let the idea it expresses seep into your heart. Which means that in a show like this, the music has to be as rich and seductive and as reminiscent of classic Broadway as possible. So Jeanine set out to write her most beautiful score, and I think she has. People sometimes asked, is she trying to write in an Asian or Chinese vein? I would say not so much. We’re going for the idea that China 50 years from now really appropriates the American musical form.
RITCHIE: And I was completely intrigued by it. And then you mentioned someone you were thinking of working on it.
RITCHIE: Thank you, David. There is nothing better in the world than working on a new musical.
HWANG: It was my dream that we could work with the composer Jeanine Tesori. My thought was, if we pull this off, you should have that same feeling that you do at the end of The King and I, which is, this is kind of not true but it’s so beautiful. So the person I thought of was Jeanine,
HWANG: Thank you and Center Theatre Group. You committed to this huge project when we only really had a title. Thanks so much for your faith.
TH
RITCHIE: How did you and Jeanine decide on the style and how the music should come across?

2019 SEASON THEBLACKCAT -J.S. Bach / D. Sylvian January 19 /20 U.S. PREMIERE
A nameless man sits on death row, awaiting his execution. E. A. Poe’s novella delivers a dark journey into the abyss of a desperate man’s soul. It is accompanied by a musical mashup of English songwriter David Sylvian’s work and arias from J.S. Bach cantatas. - With Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra.
THE PENAL COLONY - Philip Glass May 3/4/5/9/10/11 - SoCal PREMIERE
An explorer visits an island where blind conformity has no rational connection between crime and punishment. Kafka’s ingenious metaphor about man’s inhumanity to man is heightened by Glass’ hypnotic score. Witness the internal conflict of the innocent bystander; to act or to do nothing.
THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE - A. Davis June 15/22/23 - WORLD PREMIERE
In 1980’s New York, five African American and Latino teenagers were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were the wrong color but the right suspects to be unjustly convicted of a Central Park rape. They were exonerated through DNA 13 years later. Davis’s opera is a passionate story about a case that rocked America and its long-standing battle with racial stereotyping.
THREE TALES - Steve Reich November 11 - LBO PREMIERE
This documentary video opera recalls three well known events from the 20th century; the Hindenburg explosion, the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests, and Dolly the cloned sheep. Each of these reflects on the growth and implications of technology during the 20th century. The debate about the physical, ethical, and religious nature of our expanding technological environment has continued to grow more pervasive since 1945.
