FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Center Theatre Group This month we have two terrific productions onstage that—in very different ways—use the art of theatre to illuminate key moments in our American history. Come From Away tells the story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland during the days following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Due to the uncertainties at the time, all American airspace was shut down and all planes in the air were forced to land at the closest airport. Gander, population 9,651, unexpectedly was forced to welcome close to 7,000 international passengers on the morning of the attacks, and over the ensuing days housed and fed them all. The story, told dramatically and theatrically, is completely uplifting and lifeaffirming. It’s exactly what we need right now, and I’m sure that you will agree that it is the perfect show for this moment in time. At the Taper we’re extremely pleased to be bringing back Zoot Suit writer/director Luis Valdez with his new play Valley of the Heart. It’s the story of a Mexican American family and a Japanese American family whose lives and fates intersect amidst the backdrop of World War II on the farmland they share in Northern California. Its resonance with current events is undeniable, and we’re honored to bring this important story to L.A. audiences. Thank you for your patronage and support of Center Theatre Group in 2018. I hope to see you again soon at the Ahmanson and Taper in 2019, and at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

We’ll be sending teams of Center Theatre Group Teaching Artists into five new Title 1 schools over the course of the year, to culminate in the production of their own Disney KIDS musical on-site and a group Student Share Celebration at the Ahmanson. We also welcomed back the educators (pictured) who launched the program with us last year for a Musical Theatre 201 course to help support them as they produce their second Disney KIDS musical in the coming year.

CENTER THEATRE GROUP LAUNCHES

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Training & Mentorship for Emerging Technical Production and Artistic Professionals

LET’S SAY YOU’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THEATRE. You think you might want to make a career out of working behind the scenes. You may have some experience with university theatre productions; you may have some experience in a different kind of work setting. But you don’t know anyone who’s done a job like the one you think you want to do. What’s next? We wanted to find a way to help people at this key point in their work lives figure that out, so this fall—with support from SoCalGas, a member of our Corporate Circle—we launched the Center Theatre Group Apprenticeship Program. It’s a paid opportunity for people with no background in professional theatre to get hands-on training in technical production and artistic careers. Our first four Apprentices joined us for the World premiere of Quack at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (onstage October 21 – November 18, 2018) to shadow staff members, sit in on the production process, and learn and practice the skills necessary to work in their chosen fields over 100 hours. “There are a lot of opportunities available for people who are already in graduate school or already have more experience, but we’re trying to get people in the door earlier,” said Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan. “It’s really about where they are in their careers and where they’re going.”

Our four Quack Apprentices fell in love with the art in different places, at different times in their lives, and come from very different backgrounds and perspectives, yet they all share a desire to take the next step into the world of professional theatre. Technical Direction Apprentice Rex Harrison is a Marine Corps veteran who was introduced to working in theatre over the summer, with Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles’ production of Henry IV. “I really liked doing theatre work and really liked the people I was working around. I didn’t know I’d have interest in working behind the scenes,” he said. As an Apprentice, “I’ve been looking more into what stage managers and assistant stage managers do, and I really enjoy that aspect of it. And I’ve enjoyed doing all the technical production as well, building the sets and designing stuff and solving problems, which I’ve always been kind of good at.” But what he’s appreciated most has been getting to be a part of a group of “really good people,” he said. “You become like a family and work closely together for this production, and you build really good relationships.” Continues on page 16

“I’m a young career director. There’s not a lot of concrete things to do. Unlike being an actor, where auditioning is your job, there is not that same task at hand for young directors to get into it.”

Continued from page 14

Relationships have also been a key part of the experience for Directing Apprentice Annie Barker. “What I love about this program and working on Quack is that I’m learning from [the director,] Neel [Keller], [the playwright,] Eliza [Clark], from stage management, and from the actors. The actors have all been amazing,” she said, explaining that they’ve sat down with her individually to offer their insights. “I’m getting a chance to understand the role of director in all its capacities.” She’s also grateful for the opportunity to work on her craft while moving her career path forward. “I’m a young career director. There’s not a lot of concrete things to do. Unlike being an actor, where auditioning is your job, there is not that same task at hand for young directors to get into it,” she explained.

An important component of the program is a diversity requirement: apprenticeships are intended for people who self-identify as a member of a group currently underrepresented in theatre production and artistic careers. “Applicants had to think deeply about why they were underrepresented in their field,” said Schenkkan. Considering everything from gender and age to experience and background “opened up the possibilities for applicants instead of narrowing it,” she added. Production Management Apprentice Crystal Hui grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from college in May with a theatre degree. “The experience opened my mind as to what American professional theatre is and how the work gets done,” she said. She learned a great deal about the importance of time management. And she was impressed with the attitude and demeanor of her mentors when she witnessed a set piece malfunction during technical rehearsals. “I could see how the production team fixed the problem and managed to keep things going on but not make them any worse,” she said. “That was a really great reminder to myself to stay calm and move forward in the chaos.”

We want them to enter the world of professional Los Angeles theatre with both experience and confidence—which will benefit not just them but the theatres where they work. This is one reason why this program aligns with SoCalGas’ charitable giving in the community. “SoCalGas has provided clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Southern California for more than 150 years,” said Sharon Tomkins, Vice President of Customer Solutions and Strategy at SoCalGas. “We are also a long-time partner of Center Theatre Group and are proud to support education and workforce development programs, such as the Production Apprentice Program, that provide members of underrepresented groups with opportunities in STEM fields and various trades.”

Visit CTGLA.org/Education to learn more about the program. Spring 2019 Apprenticeships will be announced early next year.

Staff members also appreciated the opportunity to take a step back from their day to day. “For me to work with someone at the very

THE MIX OF BUSINESS, ARTISTRY, AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY that comes with a creative career in theatre can be tricky to master, especially for young, emerging professionals. As part of our efforts to support an ever-growing and increasingly diverse theatre community in Los Angeles, Center Theatre Group hosted our first Workforce Readiness Symposium on September 22, 2018 at East Los Angeles College, our official higher education partner. More than a dozen colleges and universities were involved as planning partners for the event, and over 30 higher education institutions from across L.A. were represented among the educators and administrators who attended. The goal, explained Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan, was to provide a time and place for this group to gather and “have a robust conversation about the hard and soft skills students need to succeed in professional theatre.”

Educators and Theatre Professionals Come Together at Center Theatre Group’s WORKFORCE READINESS SYMPOSIUM

The event began with opening presentations from theatre artists, professors, career center representatives, and others, all focused on what theatre students need before graduation. Speakers included Celebration Theatre Co-Artistic Director Michael A. Sheppard, who spoke on representation and diversity, and Chapman University Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies Dr. Jocelyn L. Buckner, who provided a snapshot of the university’s senior theatre seminar. Playwright Luis Alfaro delivered a keynote reflecting on his experience as both a practicing artist and university educator. Representatives from Center Theatre Group provided an employer perspective, discussing hiring trends and fieldwide needs. Attendees also reviewed the results of the Southern California Theatre Alumni Survey, conducted by Center Theatre Group this summer, which asked local theatre alumni to weigh in on the career training they received, as well as what training would have been helpful to them as they embarked on their careers. A NEW PLAY DEBUTS IN BOYLE HEIGHTS

LUIS ALFARO’S

L.A. STORY COMES TO OUR LIBRARY READING SERIES AS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS The Mama of the Row team. Photo by Cristi Burgos/CBGRAPHY.

A TUESDAY AFTERNOON IN SEPTEMBER FOUND PLAYWRIGHT AND MacARTHUR “GENIUS” LUIS ALFARO REWRITING HIS NEWEST WORK IN AN AT ONCE UNLIKELY AND COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE SETTING: A LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY PARKING LOT IN BOYLE HEIGHTS. The play is Mama of the Row or Who Raised the Rent? (A Los Angeles Vaudeville of Tragic Proportions) A Displacement of Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children,” and it’s the story of a family living on the streets of Downtown L.A.’s Skid Row.

Mama of the Row is one of about two dozen new works currently under commission by Center Theatre Group. But unlike most of our commissions, it made its first public debut as part of our free Library Play Reading Series—just a few miles away from where the piece is set. And so Alfaro—whose works have appeared on stages around the world, and who was a longtime member of Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff—found himself doing rewrites in a Boyle Heights parking lot, surrounded by director Nancy Keystone, a small company of local actors and collaborators, and the three-woman, mariachi-inspired band La Victoria. The group had spent the previous week in your more typical regional theatre new play development setting: Center Theatre Group’s rehearsal rooms.

“It was so much fun, and I have to say part of the journey was that we created together,” said Alfaro. “It was so amazing that we were able to bring all the collaborators into the room, and that I was able to bring in scenes every day.” But with just moments before the reading was to take place, with Benjamin Franklin Library already packed with patrons of all ages there for the play— mostly local but at least one person had come from as far away as Simi Valley—Alfaro had realized he needed to add a new scene. After a quick rehearsal in the lot, followed by an introduction from Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes, the band began to play, and the actors took the floor. The group of elementary school-age girls in the front row stopped giggling, and the entire audience spent the next hour enraptured—laughing, gasping, and occasionally tearing up—by the struggles of Mama and her children. The next two evenings, the scene was similar at Malabar and Robert Louis Stevenson Libraries. For the past five years, these three libraries have hosted regular bilingual play readings—generally monthly, with a Spanish reading followed by an English reading—for a multigenerational audience Continues on page 22

Alfaro was equally appreciative of his audience. “I can’t imagine a more diverse audience. It was so cool—even having the little kids. It was fun to track it with the audience, to hear where they were plugging in and out,” said Alfaro. “You’re writing about a community and you have the community judge you and give you affirmation or criticism—it’s a kind of guide. The opportunity to have that kind

of community with you is very rare. It was all very positive and very fun. We got better and better every night. I did about 30 pages of changes through the second reading, and by Thursday, I thought we had gotten a rough draft of what we wanted.” Alfaro will continue to work on and refine Mama of the Row over the coming months with the continued support of Center Theatre Group. And the readings—which generally are presented in partnership with local Los Angeles theatre companies—will continue at the libraries. Special thanks to the California Arts Council for their support of our Library Play Reading Series.

of grandparents, parents, and children. “Some of our largest audiences turn out for Center Theatre Group’s plays,” said Benjamin Franklin Branch Senior Librarian Connie B. Topete. “There is so much enthusiasm when a play reading is held here. You can feel the excitement. Live theatre is not something that most people in Boyle Heights have access to, and the community is very appreciative of that fact.”

Thank Canada TWENTY-EIGHT HOURS AFTER LEAVING PARIS,

France for Dallas, Texas, American Airlines Captain Beverley Bass and her passengers and crew disembarked in the Newfoundland, Canada town of Gander, population approximately 10,000. “Most airline pilots will spend their entire career knowing about Gander but never landing there,” recalled Bass of the location of the first sizable airport in the northeastern part of the continent. “But we knew as soon as we exited and walked into the terminal that we had landed in a very special place because we got off the airplane about 7:30 on the morning of September 12, and we walked into a terminal lined with tables of food.” The people of Gander “had actually stayed up all night long” preparing meals for Bass and the other 7,000 visitors from around the world who had been stranded there. Almost 17 years later, Bass still marveled at the generosity and kindness the people of Gander showed for her and her fellow “Come-From-Aways” in the days that followed September 11, 2001.

COME FROM AWAY CREATORS & THOSE WHO LIVED THE STORY DISCUSS THE MAKING OF THE MUSICAL WITH NIA VARDALOS “We knew we were falling in love with the people, and the stories, and that was enough for us to go on and then try to tell almost 7,000 stories of the people who landed there and 9,000 stories of the people who were there, and so we tried to tell 16,000 stories in a 100-minute musical.”

At an event hosted by the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles—who are supporting Come From Away’s engagement at the Ahmanson November 28, 2018 – January 6, 2019—Bass, former Gander Mayor Claude Elliott, and Come From Away creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein discussed how the days after 9/11 unfolded in Gander and became a hit musical. The discussion was moderated by Canadian actor Nia Vardalos, who opened by asking Elliott, “What was your reaction when you heard about the Come-From-Aways coming?” “Bring ’em on!” said Elliott. “We knew we’d have some visitors, and we wanted to make their stay as comfortable as possible.” The stranded passengers and crews remained on their aircraft overnight, which gave Elliott and the rest of the Newfoundlanders time to prepare. “We mobilized 450 volunteers to go to the airport, and they made up 7,000 lunchboxes to have, so when the people came off the plane, each person

was given a lunchbox and a hug,” said Elliott. “We figured they needed compassion just as much as they needed food.” They also needed information. “How do you deal with a planeload of passengers who are learning about what happened at the Twin Towers?” Vardalos asked Bass. “We actually knew very little about what was going on because during that time most of us did not carry cell phones,” said Bass. “We went probably 30 hours before we ever saw a visual on TV as to what had really occurred. We did get a little bit of news from the BBC that was coming across our aircraft radio, but nothing from the US…so it was very disjointed.” Meanwhile, Canadians Sankoff and Hein were living in New York City on 9/11. How, asked Vardalos, did they come to write Come From Away? “A friend of ours was starting a program at a college in Ontario called the Canadian Music Theatre Project. He had actually approached, he said, about five other writing teams” about the story of Gander, said Sankoff, “and they all turned him down.” But Sankoff and Hein connected with the story. They had seen how the people of New York came together and took care of one another in the aftermath of 9/11. “Hearing the story of Gander sort of felt like something that was familiar to us. And David had grown up on Newfoundland music,” said Sankoff. Hein told her, “‘You have to understand, Newfoundland is music, so it has to be a musical.’” Sankoff and Hein traveled to Gander for the 10TH anniversary of 9/11. “We found out there was going to be a commemoration ceremony happening there, and all these Come-From-Aways… were returning there,” said Hein.

“It’s a hard place to get out to. So 10 years later, it was an amazing testimony to the power of the friendships that had been created there, that people wanted to return there to commemorate the kindness they had seen.” He added, “There’s all of this press out there looking for these five second sound bites from everyone, and we just wanted to hear every story.” As he and Sankoff listened, “We knew we were falling in love with the people, and the stories, and that was enough for us to go on and then try to tell almost 7,000 stories of the people who landed there and 9,000 stories of the people who were there, and so we tried to tell 16,000 stories in a 100-minute musical.” Vardalos lauded the Come From Away company for their ability to play more than one role. “What I found so incredible is an actor onstage would be one character, they would turn, put on a hat, and be another character,” she said. The resulting show “is a kitchen party. Mayor, will you tell us what that is?” “About 500 people in your living room, drinking, eating your food, and dancing, and probably spending the night,” said Elliott. “It’s community,” said Hein. “That’s what we wanted to do with the show: we wanted to bring everyone into a kitchen party and say, ‘You have a story as well; we’re going to tell our story.’”

Hello, Welcome to the Rock! When we traveled to Newfoundland in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we had no idea that our journey would take us across the United States, to our home city of Toronto, eventually landing on Broadway. We spent a month in Gander, Newfoundland and the surrounding communities meeting with the locals, returning flight crews and pilots, and returning “come from aways” (a Newfoundland term for a visitor from beyond the island) who gathered to celebrate the hope that emerged from tragedy. We didn’t know what we were looking for, but thankfully the people of Newfoundland are incredible storytellers. As we heard numerous tales of ordinary people and extraordinary generosity, it became clear that during the week of 9/11, for the 7,000 stranded passengers and people of Newfoundland, the island was a safe harbor in a world thrown into chaos. We laughed, we cried, we were invited over for dinner and offered cars. We made lifetime friends out of strangers, and we came home wanting to share every story we heard. Through this journey, we’ve learned it’s important to tell stories about welcoming strangers and stories of kindness. It’s important to honor what was lost and commemorate what was found. LEARN THE LANGUAGE Hear tales of Newfoundlanders past while you eat bologna, caplan, and repeat Newfoundland phrases.

take a shot Back in World War II, an officer was stationed here and was offered some screech. All the locals were tossing it back with nar’ a quiver, so he does too, and lets out an ear piercing howl “What was that ungodly screech!”

kiss the fish Now with every transformation comes a tiny bit of risk. And it’s the same to be a Newfoundlander, every person’s wish. So don’t be dumb, just take the plunge, and go on— kiss the fish!

The Island has its own time zone, 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Standard Time.

NEWFOUNDLAND

: S T FAC

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has its own dictionary. The province’s language and dialect are so diverse, different communities spread throughout the island often have their own, unique accent. Newfoundland has no crickets, porcupines, skunks, snakes, or deer. It does, however, have over 100,000 moose. They were introduced over 100 years ago. Distance from Gander to the nearest Starbucks: 4 hours, in St. Johns.

The first known European presence in North America was not Christopher Columbus, but rather the Vikings. They arrived at L’Anse aux Meadows, located at the very northern tip of the island, which is believed to be the location of a Viking colony. It was discovered in 1960 and it is believed that the settlement was founded around the year 1,000. Newfoundland used to be an independent country. In 1907, Newfoundland was given dominion status by the U.K. along with New Zealand, Australia, and Canada and remained so until 1949 when it joined the Canadian confederation. Gander International Airport boasted Newfoundland’s first 24-hour liquor license and the province’s first escalator. Nearly all of Gander’s streets are named for famous aviators, including Amelia Earhart, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, Marc Garneau, and Chuck Yeager. Newfoundland and Labrador was named one of the top 10 friendliest cultures in the world according to Maclean’s magazine.

The consensus among all presenters was the need to emphasize more general skills—especially financial skills, both personal and professional. They also agreed that there is a tremendous breadth of opportunities available to young people. Attendees then split into groups to discuss career training within specific theatre disciplines, such as acting, stage management, and design, and topics such as how best to support diverse students, as well as institutions’ hiring needs and requirements.

Each group was tasked with creating a list of what a student studying a particular discipline would need to learn to prepare them for the professional world. Schenkkan said she is excited to share these lists, as well as the survey results and other findings from the day: “Rather than coming only from Center Theatre Group, these lists and consensus are coming from all of these schools and institutions collectively.” A number of the attendees made it clear that educational institutions are excited to collaborate closely with one another and with the greater Los Angeles theatre ecosystem. “I left so inspired by the words of our faculty and allies in the arts,” said Rosa Trujillo, a Career Counselor at California State University, Long Beach. “I am not a practicing artist in theatre, but that day, I felt like I belonged to a community that is so in love with the art, the mentorship of this field, and this vision of supporting our performers, artists, and creatives.”

Los Angeles —the cultural hub of the country— is home to America’s most diverse population and more entertainment options and venues than anywhere else in the U.S. A s one of the nation’s largest performing arts centers, and as a cultural and civic anchor in Los Angeles County, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of enriching the lives of every resident. To help realize its vision, The Music Center is poised to become a multidisciplinary arts center for the 21st century, not only as a home for classical art forms, but also as a driving artistic voice for diversity and inclusion that reflects and responds to the ever-evolving landscape of Los Angeles. Through compelling programs that are relevant to a range of audiences, serving Los Angeles in all its breadth, The Music Center is both the home and the force behind some of the greatest creative expression today.
