FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Center Theatre Group With three theatres of different sizes and scales, we are lucky to be able to partner with a range of artists and organizations from across our nation and city—on everything from beloved revivals to cutting-edge new works. Over 25 years ago, William Finn and James Lapine’s Falsettos had a celebrated Broadway premiere and went on to become a new classic that celebrates family—the ones we’re born into and the ones we choose—and chronicles a pivotal, heartbreaking moment in our history. This Lincoln Center Theater production, which again became a Broadway hit, is tremendous, and it’s a pleasure to welcome this talented company to the Ahmanson. Ruben Santiago-Hudson is a brilliant actor, director, and writer who also has a Center Theatre Group history—he appeared on our stages in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars and in the World premiere of Jelly’s Last Jam before both shows went to Broadway. Now, he’s returning to the Taper with his seminal Lackawanna Blues, a very American story of his childhood in upstate New York and the wonderful woman who raised him. I’ve truly admired Ruben over the years and am honored to have him back at our theatre with this deeply personal and moving work. We launched our Block Party program in 2016 to celebrate the innovation, excellence, and diversity of the Los Angeles theatre ecosystem by remounting recent productions from local companies at the Douglas. Our third edition of Block Party features Theatre of NOTE’s For The Love Of (or, the roller derby play), Skylight Theatre Company’s Rotterdam, and Antaeus Theatre Company’s Native Son—all terrific shows by companies with rich Los Angeles histories. Whether you are discovering these shows—or companies—for the first time or seeing them again through our encore productions, by joining us for Block Party you’re helping celebrate the vibrant art and artists that make Los Angeles a leading theatre town. Thank you for helping make our partnerships with these artists and organizations possible.

L.A. STUDENTS TRY ON CINDERELLA’S SLIPPERS In Our Shoes Immerses Students in the Professional Dance World

It was a few hours before curtain on a Friday afternoon at the Ahmanson during the February 5 – March 10, 2019 run of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. Dancers were onstage rehearsing, under the watchful eye of two members of the New Adventures company. The performers finished their number, got some feedback, and did it one more time. The big difference between this afternoon at the theatre and most others: the dancers were all high school students at Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise. They were on the Ahmanson stage as part of the New Adventures In Our Shoes program, which invites student groups to workshop with company members, see a production, and create their own piece of dance responding to the show. Center Theatre Group partnered with New Adventures to bring the program to Los Angeles during the Cinderella run. Thanks to this collaboration, the participating students— most of whom have less than two years of dance experience and are currently enrolled in a dance class taught by Tiana Álvarez—got a threeday crash course in dance. “Center Theatre Group is tremendously proud of our 22-year relationship with Matthew Bourne and New Adventures. In addition to creating astonishing works of dance theatre, New Adventures, like Center Theatre Group, maintains a robust educational and community engagement program,” said Center Theatre Group Producing Director Douglas C. Baker. “In Our Shoes provided 16 Los Angeles-area high

school students the opportunity to take a truly deep dive into the world of professional choreography and what it takes to be a professional dancer. We look forward to continuing our work with New Adventures and to providing our Los Angeles community with similar extraordinary experiences.” Álvarez’s class kicked off In Our Shoes at the Student Matinee performance of Cinderella on February 13. They were among the approximately 1,500 students from across Los Angeles who attended the show. On February 14, New Adventures dancers Luke Murphy and Mami Tomotani—who also visited many of the Student Matinee classrooms for pre-show workshops—spent the morning leading a hands-on (or rather feet-on) workshop in Álvarez’s classroom in dance technique and in creating their own choreography.

“I don’t know if I can find the exact words to express my elation. The last three days have been momentous for my students. I could see in their faces what an amazing experience it was.”

“All of the movements are inspired by the show,” explained Murphy. “We threw material at them and guided them through creative exercises to make the dancing their own”—which is what the company themselves does under the guidance of Matthew Bourne whenever they make a new piece. The workshops gave students an understanding of “the difficult process and the dedication it takes to execute dance pieces,” said one participant. “We all got a small example of what a dancer’s life is like.” On February 15, the students continued to work with Murphy and Tomotani in the Center Theatre Group rehearsal room and, finally, on the Cinderella set at the Ahmanson. They also got a backstage tour and participated in a Q&A session with dancers Alan Vincent and Daisy Mae Kemp...which opened with questions for the students. “How have you found it?” asked Vincent. “Painful!” shouted one of the students. “Physically or mentally?” asked Kemp. “Physically!” the group shouted, nearly in unison.

Nonetheless, they were all smiles and full of curiosity about the life and work of professional dancers. Kemp and Vincent answered questions about dancing in Bourne’s Cinderella, how they concentrate before taking the stage, their professional paths, and what advice they have for young dancers. And then it was time for the students to show the dancers what Cinderella had inspired in them, as In Our Shoes culminated in a terrific and spirited performance with the entire New Adventures company in the audience. “I don’t know if I can find the exact words to express my elation,” said Álvarez as the workshop concluded. “The last three days have been momentous for my students. I could see in their faces what an amazing experience it was. One of my students even said that the real-world experience of rehearsing all day and under pressure had made her decide she wants to pursue dance! And no one wanted to leave at the end of the day because they didn’t want to lose the feeling of being onstage.” The students agreed that the effort and time they put in, and perhaps even the pain, paid off. “It is a lot of work, and you just keep going over and over until you get it,” said one student. “It takes a lot of strength and courage. It is really worth it at the end when you perform.”

She didn’t know it at the time, but Andi Chapman’s first encounter with legendary playwright August Wilson was prophetic. “He said ‘hello’ and told me I had hands like his mother,” said Chapman—who, 22 years old and beginning graduate school at the Yale School of Drama, wasn’t sure what to think. Today, however, “That’s a special thing to me because I feel like a mother, a nurturer, of the kids here at the August Wilson Program.” Chapman, a director, actor, and educator, holds the title Program Advisor on the August Wilson Program Faculty at Center Theatre Group. But as so many young people and their families know, she is much more than that. Since the program’s inception in 2011—when she also helped create the curriculum for the August Wilson In-School Residency—she has trained, taught, and supported every single Regional Finalist to come through the Los Angeles August Wilson Monologue Competition. The Competition is an educational journey for local 10,TH 11,TH and 12TH grade students, who hone their acting skills while receiving an introduction to Wilson’s work. Each year, approximately a dozen advance from Preliminary and Semifinal Auditions to the Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum, at which point they work closely with Chapman as a group.

and actor. “The confidence a teacher gave me in the seventh grade to have my own voice, to know my voice mattered in the world, also gave me the confidence to do something as fearless as Native Son and all the work I’ve done,” she said. “If I can somehow, some way, pass that on, somebody else will have the same experience.”

“I know what it feels like when your voice is heard. It was important to me to pass that on.”

THE AUGUST WILSON PROGRAM IS PRESENTED BY THE CENTER THEATRE GROUP AFFILIATES

This is the goal of the 20 hours of training and rehearsals she leads the Regional Finalists through in the weeks leading up to their performances at the Taper. “The first thing I ask them in the workshops I do is what drew them to the monologue they selected,” said Chapman. “They’ll say, ‘I identify with Booster,’ ‘I identify with Bertha.’ I ask them why. There was something in their song, in these characters’ voices, that spoke to them. And then I encourage them to tell it within the context that August Wilson has set up. That’s what’s most important: their voice is heard, but it’s heard through the lines of August Wilson. The challenge is to ensure that the authenticity of the monologues is honored and the voices of the students are honored.” In all of the activities the students do, Wilson is at the center. “I show them who he is, show them his work, let them hear his voice in different interviews and things so they can see the kind of man he was,” she said. She helps the students see the context in which their monologue lives, ultimately preparing them to perform the entire play rather than just one piece of it. “We keep building so the characters shine through—they have different colors, different levels of emotion, so the characters aren’t all angry or sad or crying. We give them humanity,” she said. Also at the core of the students’ learnings is that “working together is key and ensemble is key. I know it says ‘August Wilson Monologue Competition,’ but it’s really ensemble,” said Chapman. “We’re one voice trying to tell a story of this particular artist.” That feeling carries through the Regional Finals and beyond, including the National Finals in New York. Chapman travels there with two Regional Finalists, who perform their monologues on Broadway. “Every group we’ve had has been very supportive of each other. Backstage when we’re doing the show, they’re all hugging, they’re right there with each other. Whoever’s going to go on to New York, the whole village goes along. We all go with them.” She added, “The win is not so much the trip to New York. The win is for a

student to feel as if they have fulfilled the telling of the story—and they used themselves to do so. That’s the great beauty of this program.”

How many adults in the United States today identify as trans? What’s the difference between gender identity and gender expression? What does “cisgender” mean? What’s the best way to find out a colleague, friend, or patron’s pronoun?

Center Theatre Group Partners with TransCanWork to Build a More Inclusive Company

These were a few of the questions asked and answered at recent trainings hosted by TransCanWork for Center Theatre Group staff. Inspired by the Skylight Theatre Company production of Rotterdam (onstage at the Douglas March 28 – April 7, 2019)—which features a trans character’s journey—we partnered with TransCanWork to help us make our company a more welcoming place for members of the trans community. TransCanWork is a team of educators and program navigators committed to advancing workplace inclusion through innovative training strategies and workforce development. The trainings were also part of a larger, ongoing effort to create a culture of greater equity, diversity, and inclusion at Center Theatre Group.

“In an effort to create an authentic and ongoing ‘community of learning’ at our theatre that acknowledges and seeks to repair injustices, we need look no further than the work on our stages to discover rich opportunities and partnerships to help us learn and create a more inclusive and representative organization. The themes and ideas in Rotterdam inspired us to learn more about what it means to be a trans person in today’s world and think about ways we can make our theatre and its operations more welcoming to the trans-community,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson, whose responsibilities include serving as the theatre’s chief diversity officer. TransCanWork hosted three trainings for staff members working on Rotterdam from departments across the company devoted to helping participants better understand the spectrum of gender and sexuality, debunking stereotypes and understanding the diversity within the trans population, and learning how to communicate in the most inclusive and sensitive way possible with trans people and about trans issues. In addition to sharing facts like the adult trans population of the US today (1.4 million) and the percentage of American kids who identify as trans (0.7 percent), the training leaders walked staff through the difficult questions and decisions that arise in the process of transitioning that might surprise cisgender people (who identify and present as the same gender they were designated at birth). They also led exercises in introducing yourself and your pronoun and offered other tips for creating more inclusive environments. The sessions concluded with staff members putting the training in action in the creation of work-related communications like casting notices and social media posts and role-playing conversations with patrons. “We have a philosophy of radical hospitality at the Douglas, which means that we want everyone to feel truly at home and just totally, completely welcome in our space, and the training was one more way to ensure that,” said Center Theatre Group Audience Engagement Manager Jaquelyn Johnson, who oversees the Douglas Concierge staff. “We all really enjoyed how interactive the training was and how we were encouraged to ask questions—and even to say something wrong, because that’s how you learn. In the process we realized that we have an opportunity to improve the signage for our all-gender restroom at the theatre and to help people use it before the house is open. The training helped us to see blind spots like this and learn more.”

Marron performs in Through the Looking Glass. Photos by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.

In summer 2015, 10 years after he’d graduated from high school, Manuel Marron’s 10TH grade English teacher invited him to join a playwriting workshop. “I really had no idea what I was getting myself into,” recalled Marron. “I didn’t have any expectations at all.”

The workshop, which met in Montebello over the course of eight months and was led by playwright and poet Jerry Quickley, was a Center Theatre Group program/production called Through the Looking Glass. It invited members of two Los Angeles communities (Montebello and Leimert Park) to create and perform a play inspired by individual residents’ autobiographies—written not by themselves but their counterparts in the other community. “I live in what’s considered a gang neighborhood,” said Marron of Pico Rivera, where he was raised by his grandmother and uncle after his father died and his mother left, and is just east of Montebello. “Each time we’d meet up to read our pieces, the reaction I got from people about my writing made me feel inspired,” he said. “It made me feel like, maybe all these people aren’t lying to me, maybe I can do something.” He added,

It’s opened up just an entire life I had no idea I could even be a part of.” Before joining Through the Looking Glass, Marron hadn’t been doing much writing—mainly poetry and some short film scripts—and playwriting was “new to me completely,” he said. But he was quickly hooked. Over the next few years, he stayed involved in programs and workshops through Center Theatre Group, and in January, he enjoyed another first: his new, original piece, A Wake, was performed as part our Library Play Readings Series at three branches of the Los Angeles Public Library in Boyle Heights. His high school English teacher Libby Rego, who also participated in Through the Looking Glass, wasn’t entirely surprised to hear that Marron had stuck with it. In high school, “he was an excellent writer with a great imagination, and he also really hated authority and following rules,” she said. When she heard about Through the Looking Glass, Marron “was the first person I thought of, because he’s always been super creative and had an interesting and unique perspective on things.” His writing in Through the Looking Glass, she added, “was always so good.”

“Manny is somebody... who’s got stories inside of him that really deserve to be seen by lots and lots of people. He has a voice.”

Marron participated in more Center Theatre Group workshops, led by playwright Naomi Iizuka, as well as Chisme y Queso, a program that featured performances of short pieces by a group of local playwrights at a Boyle Heights bar. “He had an amazing ear for dialogue, he had a huge amount of empathy, and the way that manifested was in how complex his characters were. His characters were just incredibly rich, multidimensional—they were fully formed people,” said Iizuka, who also praised his “funny, dry, dark” humor. “And then what became apparent, as it does over time as you work with someone, was he was just an incredibly diligent hard worker.” She added, “I honestly think Manny is somebody—because of his life experiences and because of how he sees the world—who’s got stories inside of him that really deserve to be seen by lots and lots of people. He has a voice.” Chisme y Queso helped Marron develop that voice but also gave him what he hadn’t even realized he needed: “self-confidence in my own writing that came from sharing my work and putting it out there. I’ve always been filled with a lot of doubt, and I guess that’s what’s held me back for so long,” he said. Through the workshops and performances “I was able to open up and actually realize that I had far more potential than I was working with.” After Chisme y Queso concluded, Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes invited Marron to write something new for the Library Play Readings. “It feels like something very special because it’s in the libraries and in Boyle Heights. It feels like it’s giving back to the community,” said Marron. “I’m really excited to have my writing have any representation at all, but especially coming from something that’s representing East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights.” A Wake is “about a young man who is trying to overcome his fear of death at his grandmother’s wake,” said Marron. “It’s about how people mourn and why we mourn the way we do.” The experience of seeing his work read out loud, in public, remained surreal. “The fact that there’s going to be actors and a director I need to meet with is coming out of left field for me and people who are like me, who come from where I come from,” said Marron. “I am super, super grateful for the opportunity to get my view on the world represented. I don’t think I would have had an opportunity

without Center Theatre Group to express myself that way, and it’s been a blessing to my life. Not just my day to day but how I feel about myself, how I feel about my writing, and how I feel about my future.” TOP: Abe Martell performs A Wake in Boyle Heights. (L–R) Matthew Ball and Liam Mower in MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE

The season kicks off with LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS (September 5 – October 20, 2019), written and performed by John Leguizamo and directed by Tony Taccone, and coming to the Ahmanson after an acclaimed Broadway run. Inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books, Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school project. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called Latin History for Morons a “surprisingly poignant one-man show [that] slyly poses sharp and timely questions of what culturally defines American identity and who, in the nationalistic age of Trump, has ‘the right’ to be here.” Next up, also direct from Broadway, is THE NEW ONE (October 23 – November 24, 2019), written and performed by Mike Birbiglia and directed by Seth Barrish. Birbiglia delves back into his own life to tell a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor his fans have come to expect. When she included The New One in her list of the best stage shows of 2018, Entertainment Weekly’s Jessica Derschowitz lauded Birbiglia’s “hilarious and poignant observations about becoming a parent…some of his best and most heartfelt work yet.” We’re excited to have New Adventures return to the Ahmanson on the heels of successful runs of Cinderella and The Red Shoes with MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE (December 3, 2019 – January 5, 2020). Center Theatre Group introduced American audiences to Bourne’s work for the first time in 1997 with his original Swan Lake, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down, and took the dance world by storm.

Mike Birbiglia in THE NEW ONE

Rock legend Sting stars in the acclaimed UK production of his deeply personal musical THE LAST SHIP (January 14 – February 16, 2020), which was initially inspired by his 1991 album The Soul Cages and his own childhood experiences. It’s the story of a sailor’s return home after 17 years at sea to find the local shipyard, which has anchored the community for generations, in turmoil. Picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (played by Sting) and his wife fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm. Back by popular demand, the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical THE BOOK OF MORMON is making its Ahmanson debut (February 18 – March 29, 2020) after three previous sold-out engagements in Los Angeles. The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it, “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.”

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

We are also delighted to present ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (April 7 – May 10, 2020). Written by the Tonywinning team Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), Once on This Island is directed by two-time Tony Award-nominated director Michael Arden. It is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world and ready to risk it all for love. The season concludes with an additional production to be announced. Full-season subscriptions are now available. We hope to see you at the theatre next season! Visit AhmansonSeason.org to subscribe.

How Spencer Liff Choreographed

In 1992, when Falsettos was done originally on Broadway, Spencer Liff was only seven. “I was already working professionally as a performer,” he told me, “in The Will Rogers Follies. But I was too young at the time to have seen Falsettos.” (March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, which make up Falsettos, were produced by Playwrights Horizons in 1981 and 1990, and were enthusiastically received.) By Brendan Lemon, for Lincoln Center Theater

When James Lapine, the director of both the original production and the 2016 incarnation at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway, talked to him about being the show’s choreographer, Liff read the script and listened to recordings. “I fell for it right away,” he said. “I realized I could be a fresh pair of eyes on the material.” Liff also realized that he could be part of the larger effort to bring Falsettos to a new generation. “Judging by the large numbers of young people who have been showing up during previews, I think we are succeeding. They are attracted by the social media buzz about the show, and by its performers, and all that is great.” Liff, who grew up in New York and is now based in Los Angeles, where for the past eight years he has been an Emmy-nominated resident choreographer for the TV series So You Think You Can Dance, had another reason for wanting to work on Falsettos. “I wanted to bring it to the attention of young gay men, who aren’t usually familiar with the time frame in which the show is set. I wanted them to have a reality check on what happened in the 1980s. When I watched HBO’s The Normal Heart with a group of them not long ago, they were completely shocked at what people went through then.” Liff has been involved with large-ensemble shows and TV series containing splashy dance numbers. How does choreographing Falsettos, which has a small cast and is a sing-through, not a dance-off, compare? “They are two different art forms,” he replied. “On So You Think You Can Dance, I work with the best dancers in the country so I use a different skill set.” He added: “With Falsettos, everything must revolve around the storytelling. The line between what the director does and what I do isn’t as clear as it is on something grander.”

I asked Liff to break down the creative process for “I’m Breaking Down,” which Trina, originally portrayed by Stephanie J. Block, had performed every night to rousing acclaim during the show’s 2016 Broadway revival run. (It is my pet theory that she tapped into the subconscious of what the country was going through with the 2016 election. But I digress.) “As with all the songs,” Liff said, “our director talked Stephanie through the song’s meaning, and her acting choices. Then she and I talked through the movement. With an actor that skilled, I don’t give everything in specific steps, as I might with a big dance number. The process is much more organic.” By contrast, for his work on the recent Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Liff developed more exact steps. “I worked on that show for months, and every move

was choreographed.” Liff made adjustments for the six performers who did Hedwig on Broadway and for those now doing it on tour, including Lena Hall. “During the Falsettos rehearsal period, I would work mornings with Lena and then come to Falsettos.” After Falsettos opened on October 27, 2018, Liff returned to the West Coast and worked on A Cinderella Christmas for The Pasadena Playhouse. It was a holiday entertainment known as a panto—a staple in the UK but fairly unfamiliar to American audiences. In April 2019, Liff also directed and choreographed Singin’ in the Rain, onstage at La Mirada Theatre. But the effect on him of Falsettos will probably linger. “It has been done with a level of class all across the board,” he said. “I’m lucky to be a part of it.”

WE CELEBRATE FAMILY

GROWTH

LOVE

OPPORTUNITY

FRIENDSHIP

LAUGHTER

We champion all of life’s moments. What connects us and brings us closer together. All that makes us different, and yet, very much the same. That’s why, for the last 100 years, we’ve provided our communities with the life-changing disability services they need. Today, we honor that legacy with an eye to the future — the next 100 years. And we’re committed to building a world where everyone is 100% included.

All abilities. Limitless possibilities.

KCRW’S newest podcast

Peering into the dusty corners of the night

CTG_WRAP_0419.indd 55

3/11/19 6:07 PM

INTRODUCING OUR

30 TO CURTAIN PODCAST How did playwright Dominique Morisseau convince Temptation Otis Williams to trust her with his life story for the book of Ain’t Too Proud? Why did Eliza Clark stop writing a play about an alien abduction and start writing a tale of a doctor/talk show host’s fall from grace that became Quack? What puppets did Zoot Suit and Valley of the Heart creator Luis Valdez hone his ventriloquist skills on in high school? And what’s the best use of your time as you drive to the theatre to see a Center Theatre Group show?

Center Theatre Group’s new podcast, “30 to Curtain,” hosted by Artistic Director Michael Ritchie, answers all these questions and more as we sit down for interviews with some of the greatest theatre makers from around the world. Our podcast aims to bring our audiences direct, intimate access to the amazing talents we work with every day across the Ahmanson, Taper, and Douglas. We’re not only talking with artists currently onstage at Center Theatre Group but will also be featuring voices from our past, present, and future to highlight over 50 years of bringing groundbreaking theatre to Los Angeles. Our debut episode featuring Dominique Morisseau was recorded just after the announcement that Ain’t Too Proud (which played the Ahmanson August 21 – September 30, 2018) was heading to Broadway and a few weeks before the playwright was named a MacArthur “Genius.” Ritchie talked with the Detroit native about the arc of her career and her creative process. “How much research do you want to do?” asked Ritchie. “Do you want to be accurate when you sit down to write a play?” “I do want to be accurate,” said Morisseau. “But as I’m writing, I realize that sometimes the facts get in the way of the truth. Facts will make me a slave to this day and this moment, but I won’t actually get underneath it and get to the heart of what that moment was really about. …I’ve developed the mantra, ‘I’m not a slave to the facts, I’m a slave to the truth.’” Ritchie also brought together Quack playwright Eliza Clark and director/Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller to discuss the development of the comedy at Center Theatre Group before its World premiere at the Douglas October 21 – November 18, 2018. “The relationship between a playwright and a director on a new play is almost like a marriage,” said Ritchie. “Is the honeymoon over? On both sides, how do you navigate developing that relationship?” “It has been really fun to be able to do workshops of the play knowing we were going to have a production. That’s not a thing that happens all the time in theatre and has been a real blessing,” said Clark. “I really only end up doing plays that I’m really excited about, and that’s a gift because it makes the relationship with the playwright so much easier,” added Keller. “You feel like the playwright has caught a certain magic in a bottle, and it’s just about what you can do…to help her realize as fully as possible that magic.” Curious about Luis Valdez’s ventriloquist days? You’ll have to listen to “30 to Curtain” to learn more! Find it on most major podcast platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, and Stitcher, or stream it on SoundCloud.
