Dear Audience Member, If you’ve never been here before, I want to welcome you to what I hope will be a wonderful experience. For those of you who are returning…it’s nice to have you back here with us! At Center Theatre Group, we believe theatre creates an extraordinary connection between artists and audiences, and helps to create an energy that feeds a city, a culture, and a society. Theatre, at its best, reflects the community it serves. As one of the nation’s most influential nonprofit theatre companies, we proudly continue our 52-year tradition of using the art of theatre to broaden horizons and illuminate new perspectives. Both of this month’s shows do just that. Dear Evan Hansen is a Broadway phenomenon that recently launched its national tour to 50 cities around the country. We feel very lucky to be presenting this production—with beautiful music, a top-notch company, and an important message—in Los Angeles. Quack is a brand-new play by the wonderfully talented playwright Eliza Clark. It began its life in our L.A. Writers’ Workshop, a program that supports a group of local playwrights in the creation of new works over the course of a year. It’s a very sharp, very funny piece of theatre that also adds to the bigger conversation we’re having right now about privilege and power in America. These two productions show you just a little bit of the breadth of the shows we present and produce at Center Theatre Group—which also includes the Mark Taper Forum. But what’s onstage is only a small fraction of our work, which also includes programs engaging artists, community members, and theatre’s next generation. If you are entertained, excited, or enlightened by your experience at the theatre, please consider coming a little deeper into the fold of the Center Theatre Group family by becoming a subscriber, making a tax-deductible donation to support our nonprofit mission, or simply returning for more theatre. We’ll be happy to welcome you back! See you soon. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP BOYLE HEIGHTS PLAY READINGS Our monthly, bilingual, free Play Readings series continued with Las Cuatro Comadres, co-presented with LOC Productions and featuring an incredible crowd at Benjamin Franklin Library in Boyle Heights on August 14, 2018.

As part of their work toward Theater in the Community Certificates of Achievement, East Los Angeles College students are collecting stories from Boyle Heights residents to write an original play in partnership with Center Theatre Group. They’ll present readings in March at Boyle Heights libraries as part of our Play Readings series as well as on campus and at locations around the community. They kicked off their story gathering this summer at the Puente Family Fest, where residents chatted with them about the past, present, and future of the neighborhood, and their lives there.

We bid our amazing summer interns farewell at the end of August with thank you donuts and swag. The group was embedded around the company, learning about everything from communications and public relations to ticket operations and general management. In addition to getting handson experience, they attended weekly professional development sessions to work on their resumes, interview skills, and more. Visit CTGLA.org/Education to learn more about our workforce development programs, which include opportunities for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as early career professionals. 8 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

Ain’t Too Proud Opens at the Ahmanson

This fall, we’re remembering Center Theatre Group’s longtime Press Director, Nancy Hereford, and her contribution to the organization, to Los Angeles theatre, and to artists and productions around the world. Over 39 years with the company, she helped bring attention to the work of many of America’s most talented playwrights, from Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez and Angels in America by Tony Kushner to Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo by Rajiv Joseph. Nancy passed away in August. She is greatly missed, but her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.

A day after the announcement that Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations would head to Broadway in the spring, the new musical opened at the Ahmanson with tremendous fanfare. Donors enjoyed an exclusive pre-show event featuring book writer and Center Theatre Group Los Angeles Writers’ Workshop member Dominique Morisseau, while cast members and guests mingled afterward at a star-studded party.

OSCAR WILDE AND JOAN DIDION SERVE AS MUSES FOR COMMISSIONED ARTISTS

GOB SQUAD & LARS JAN

Center Theatre Group’s 2018/2019 Season—which we’ve called our biggest ever— is in fact too big to be contained by our three stages. We’re excited to share two innovative, boundary-pushing works with Los Angeles audiences in partnership with theatres around town, featuring the work of commissioned artists: Gob Squad’s Creation (Pictures for Dorian) with REDCAT and Lars Jan’s The White Album with UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance. Both works were developed at Center Theatre Group with the support of a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Gob Squad is an arts collective based in England and Germany, while Jan lives and works in Los Angeles. “International and local are coming together through Off Center this season thanks to the Mellon grant,” said Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez. “Gob Squad, a Berlin company who finds their muse in Los Angeles, would never have found their way here had we not been able to have the resources to bring them to L.A. and affect and impact their work. And on the other hand, Lars [Jan] is a local artist whom we’ve helped make a profile nationally and internationally.” Creation (Pictures for Dorian) is onstage at REDCAT October 18–21, 2018, and is inspired by the themes of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray: “beauty, aging, and the moral choices we all make,” explained Gob Squad. Gob Squad’s previous show with Center Theatre Group, Western Society (which made its U.S. premiere at REDCAT in 2014) was inspired by Venice Beach, and Continues on page 12

the idea that this is where western society had ended up. For this new work, “they were obsessed with aging and beauty,” said Rodriguez. “And what better place than Los Angeles to explore that?” With the help of Center Theatre Group, they interviewed “people who are a lot older than us—senior citizens—and people who are lot younger than us—late teens, early 20s,” said Gob Squad. They focused on people who have spent time onstage and in the public eye (dancers, singers, magicians, models). “The exciting thing about this residency is meeting these people,” said Gob Squad. “How people are with their bodies and how they present themselves is very inspiring. The people we meet always bring an element of ‘place’ into the work; they represent Los Angeles.” They will also appear in the piece alongside Gob Squad, who have been performing around the world together for 25 years, and represent middle age. “It’s a lovely, emotional show about people in the middle who see their youth quickly fading and their age creeping up on them,” said Rodriguez. “Is there a better place? Is the middle better? Is it all good? They’re asking all of those questions.” The White Album is onstage at UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance April 5–7, 2019, and also finds inspiration from a seminal work of literature: Joan Didion’s essay about 1960s California. Jan first read the essay at 16, and “it’s the piece of writing I’ve returned to most in my life,” he said. “I used to feel like I was embracing the first sentence, ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live,’ as a mantle under which I worked, and it sort of spoke to the power of artists and art to create meaning out of the incomprehensible world that surrounds us all. As I’ve aged, that sentence has taken on a different hue, and I’ve realized its double-edgedness, in the sense that, ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’ can be understood as, ‘We create illusions in order to get by.’” The White Album explores this double edge, as well as Jan’s relationship to the piece and to the audience, with two performances in one. “It features an audience that’s actually sitting in the theatre in the seats, and then there’s another smaller audience, which receives free tickets, that will be inside of a really unique soundsealed room onstage,” he explained. “That second audience is going to experience a different dramaturgy, a different storyline, a much more interactive experience, but Continues on page 67

FROM START TO FINISH, A HOME FOR NEW WORK

Playwright ELIZA CLARK and Director NEEL KELLER Discuss the Development of

A MAJOR PILLAR OF CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S MISSION IS TO FOSTER NEW PLAYS AND SUPPORT LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS AT EVERY STEP OF THE PROCESS FROM CONCEPTION TO PRODUCTION. The ideal example is Quack, a World premiere onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre October 21 – November 18, 2018. Playwright Eliza Clark wrote the piece during her residency in the 2016/17 Center Theatre Group L.A. Writers’ Workshop. Just two years later, Clark is hard at work along with Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director and Quack director Neel Keller bringing the piece from script to stage. Clark explained that the beginnings of what would eventually become Quack began long before the Writers’ Workshop. “The play came out of an idea I had been mulling for a few years,” remembered Clark. “I wrote the first scene five years ago.” Though she had begun working on another piece for the Workshop—which brings together a cohort of local writers who each spend the year creating a new play—Clark found new inspiration to build off the old scene. “I’m interested in the wellness industry and was interested in writing a play about vaccines because I had just had a baby,” Clark explained, “and then the play became about something else.”

At the end of the Workshop, professional actors come in to read the plays for the playwrights and Center Theatre Group Artistic staff. As Keller recalled, everyone was immediately intrigued by what they heard. “It was a joyous, happy thing to hear a play that was so funny, that was so dramatically alive,” he said. “I was fascinated by how the scenes played out and how I never knew exactly what was going to happen next.” Almost immediately, Keller and other members of the Artistic staff conferred and offered to work with Clark on developing the play with an eye toward a production at the Douglas. Clark spent another year refining and developing the play further, drawing from even more inspiration and subject matter in the national news. Quack follows a medical talk show host who faces scrutiny and professional turmoil after a critical hit piece on him is published. “I had been thinking a lot about privilege and entitlement, and also the scary forces in our country that are coming out of the woodwork,” Clark said. “I was also thinking about what it meant to be a woman in the workplace—I think men and women are shamed differently. It just felt like I couldn’t write about anything else.” Continues on page 16

little bit good, but something about that is in some ways scarier because people with good intentions don’t always do the right thing.”

Continued from page 14

Throughout the year, Keller kept in close touch with Clark as the play was refined through a series of workshops and revisions. “Having the time to have those conversations, to learn about the play by hearing it at different stages and seeing where the writer’s going, was incredibly helpful,” explained Keller. “It is wonderful that Center Theatre Group can provide that sort of home base to writers.” Since the first reading, Center Theatre Group has held several more readings and workshops, offered dramaturgical support, and gotten feedback from members of the staff. Clark used the time to refine the struggles and motivations of the characters. “The very first draft was deeply bleak, and everybody in it was sort of a terrible person,” admitted Clark. “I think the play has evolved from where everybody was a little bit bad to being a play where everybody is a

“Everyone in the play is complicit in the complications that move the story forward,” noted Keller. “It is a real gift to have the time for the writer to be able to develop her plot and characters in such interesting ways.” Quack also benefited from an extra week of rehearsals, made possible by an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, a prestigious grant that has supported some of the best new work in the nation over the past decade, including Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. Brad Edgerton, MD, who sits on the Center Theatre Group Board of Directors, also directs the Edgerton Foundation New Plays Program with his wife, Louisa. As the production comes together, both Clark and Keller are eager to bring the show to Los Angeles audiences. “It’s a very scary play and a very funny comedy—it is a remarkable tightrope. Eliza is writing at such a high level. I am excited to share it with our audiences,” said Keller. And for all of the heady subject matter, said Clark, “people should be prepared to laugh.”

“I THINK THE PLAY HAS EVOLVED FROM WHERE EVERYBODY WAS A LITTLE BIT BAD TO BEING A PLAY WHERE EVERYBODY IS A LITTLE BIT GOOD, BUT SOMETHING ABOUT THAT IS IN SOME WAYS SCARIER BECAUSE PEOPLE WITH GOOD INTENTIONS DON’T ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING.” 16 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

LOS ANGELES HAS MORE THEATRE COMPANIES PER CAPITA THAN ANY CITY, AND IS A PLACE WRITERS FLOCK TO LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS EVERY FORM OF MEDIA. But it can still be hard for playwrights to find one another and find support for their theatrical endeavors. This is why, since 2005, Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop has worked to foster and promote a robust playwriting community in a city full of television writers’ rooms. Each year, seven playwrights—many of whom spend their days writing for the screen—are invited to research and develop new work with their peers and with feedback and support from Center Theatre Group staff. While creating new work has always been a driving force at Center Theatre Group, the world of L.A. theatre is ever-evolving. In exploring our own role in the ecosystem and how we can best support local playwrights, this year Center Theatre Group produced the first ever L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A., with the support of the Time Warner Foundation.

The Festival featured readings of three new plays from L.A. playwrights—all past participants in the L.A. Writers’ Workshop— onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on June 23, 2018. They were chosen from over 30 submissions from the Writers’ Workshop community. Each play received dramaturgical support, rehearsal space, a cast of actors, and a director. First on the docket was A Kind of Weather by Sylvan Oswald (2015/2016 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member). The play—dubbed an “obsessive-compulsive time-jumping tragi-comedy”—follows the story of an unexpected pseudo-family reunion between an estranged father and son. Next came New Life by Dan O’Brien (2010/2011 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member), following the story of a war reporter and an ailing playwright, and representing the third in a trilogy of memoir-for-the-stage works by O’Brien. The final piece, How to Raise a Freeman by Zakiyyah Alexander (2012/2013 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member), is the story of a middle-class American family struggling with the realities of institutional and racial violence. Center Theatre Group Artistic Program Development Manager Patricia Garza explained that the goal was to spotlight the huge talent emerging from the Writers’ Workshop to the local community here in Los Angeles—including local theatre artistic directors and literary professionals—which meant selecting “a group that really represented the diversity and excellence here.” The Festival ended with an evening reception, where audience members, artists—including many Writers’ Workshop community members whose works were not staged—and staff members mingled and enjoyed cocktails. The opportunity to be a part of the artistic development process was an exciting occasion for many, as was the chance to come together as a group of professionals and patrons who are deeply invested in the creation of new work in Los Angeles. “It’s amazing how much play you can get out of a reading, how much of the play is there, how much you can envision,” said Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller, who also directed one of the readings. Keller noted that for playwrights, as well as for audiences, readings provide a chance to see work through an exploratory lens. “Readings can seem much more alive than a full play,” Keller said. “Actors are still very actively discovering things; they’re making it up and discovering it as you watch them.”

“Discovery is exactly what we’re aiming for as we support L.A. playwrights at every stage of development.” (L–R) Playwrights Sylvan Oswald and Zakiyyah Alexander. Photo by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.

He added, “Discovery is exactly what we’re aiming for as we support L.A. playwrights at every stage of development.” Center Theatre Group wants them to “think of us as their home theatre.”

Stitching Together

CRAFT, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY in Boyle Heights

On a Saturday morning in June, a multigenerational group of friends and family gathered around sewing machines and bolts of colorful fabrics at Center Theatre Group’s The Shop. At one table stood a mother and daughter helping each other lay out fabrics to cut. Two sisters mingled around the room, translating English to Spanish and vice versa. The Shop serves as the Boyle Heights headquarters of our costume and props departments and also as a hub for community programming. Since 2013, we’ve held free workshops and events— from backyard barbeques to puppet-making classes—for the local community. In June 2018, we invited community members who have become regulars at our Shop events to participate in a special four-part series focused solely on fundamental sewing skills and techniques. The workshops involved the same group of seven participants throughout the month and was taught in both English and Spanish. During the introductory session in the series, Center Theatre Group staff demonstrated to community members how to properly and safely cut fabrics from patterns and operate industrial sewing machines. Participants then practiced on the machines by working on decorative pillows. From there, participants crafted bib aprons with border finishes, tote bags, and finally, quilted table runners. “WE WANTED TO PROVIDE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH A BUILDABLE SKILL THAT THEY COULD CONTINUE TO REFINE THROUGH MULTIPLE DIFFERENT PROJECTS,” said Center Theatre Group Costume Shop Manager Brent M. Bruin, who helped design and teach the series. “My hope is that they come out of this experience with the confidence to sit down on a sewing machine and do this at home.”

Boyle Heights resident and artist Dula Camargo has been attending workshops at The Shop since the program’s inception and was especially excited to challenge her sewing skills. Camargo found all the projects in the series enjoyable to work on but considered the tote bag the most rewarding because it taught her how costumes and props in theatre are reinforced for durability onstage. “I think we appreciate things more when we make them by hand,” she said. Another frequent workshop participant, Margarita Martinez, had spent some time sewing when she was younger and relished the opportunity to improve her skills as an adult. Martinez plans to take all that she has learned back home with her and craft projects for her loved ones. “My son already gave me his order for burlap bags to make,” she joked. “I want to keep learning and practicing.” Those who had more advanced sewing experience served as teaching assistants. Yannel Capilla—a former fashion student— guided her younger sister through the projects and learned a thing or two about the art of teaching. “I realized that when I’m helping someone else in sewing, I always have to be prepared” for questions and clarifications, Capilla said. “It’s exciting to be able to pass down all that I know about fashion to others.” Like the Capillas, whose parents also participated in the workshop, most of the community members were families—all eager to share a few Saturday mornings together collaborating on a common interest. As the sewing series came to an end, the group left with their custom-made creations as well as a richer understanding of their abilities as artists, educators, and creators. “This is theatre for your everyday life,” said Community Liaison Estela Garcia, who helped with Spanish translations with her sister Adela. “Through these workshops, we’re bridging the Boyle Heights community with theatre and also with Center Theatre Group. We all really do feel like family here.” Learn more about our community programs at CTGLA.org/Community. Thanks to the Friars Charitable Foundation for their support of this program.

GO BEHIND THE SCENES BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE

OUR ARTIST SERIES Explores the Inspiration and Craft that Gets the Art Onstage

The Center Theatre Group rehearsal rooms have been the site of many thrilling artistic breakthroughs over the past five decades, but audience members generally have had to use their imagination if they want to know what really happened there. Luckily for our patrons, we offer at least one opportunity to visit the room where it happens and get a glimpse behind the scenes for every production at the Mark Taper Forum. Before second Saturday matinee performances, our free, open-to-the-public Artist Series bring together artists and artisans—from playwrights, directors, and actors to designers and production crew members—with audiences for up-close conversations in the rehearsal rooms of The Music Center Annex. What today we call the Artist Series was founded in the 1970s by UC Santa Barbara theatre professors who wanted to bolster the interest of young theatregoers. They invited Southern California alumni and other subscribers to join them before the show for discussions about the work onstage, often with members of the creative team. After the matinee and before the evening performance, the group would gather again for a potluck dinner to which they invited the cast. Over the years, the potluck was dissolved, and Center Theatre Group took over the programming, inviting any audience member who wanted to attend.

Genni Klein has been attending the program since 1975. She recalled highlights including director Warner Shook giving a talk about The Kentucky Cycle and co-director Oskar Eustis discussing Angels in America, as well as more recent programs featuring Archduke and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo playwright Rajiv Joseph. “They are absolutely wonderful. I have appreciated them very much,” said Klein of the discussions. The program “has given me some very interesting insight into certain pieces, particularly new works. It’s always interesting to hear somebody’s point of view on the artistic choices.” Subscribing for so long has also created community for Klein. “There are several people from that original program who still attend, and it’s a way we keep up with each other,” she added. “The Artist Series is another chance for us to highlight the caliber of artists we work with,” said Audience Engagement Director Tyrone Davis. “But more importantly, it’s a chance for our community— not just patrons but also students and people at home, who can listen to recordings of the conversations on our podcast—to find out about the creative spark behind the work, to deepen their engagement with the productions, and to be inspired by theatre in a new way.” The 2018/2019 Artist Series kicked off on September 8, 2018 with actor John Earl Jelks, who reprised his Broadway and Off-Broadway role in Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat at the Taper.

“It’s a chance for our community to find out about the creative spark behind the work, to deepen their engagement with the productions, and to be inspired by theatre in a new way.”

“Theatre is ultimately about building community— and exploring and sharing our human experiences,” said Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson. “What better way to do that than to bring together the two most important human elements of theatre—our artists and our audience—in intimate ‘get to know you’ conversations?”

Center Theatre Group Launches

FREE TICKETS

TO FIRST PREVIEW PERFORMANCES FOR PLAYGOERS 25 AND UNDER We’re excited to share a new initiative for young theatregoers that launched with the beginning of the 2018/19 Season. FreePlay invites Angelenos 25 and under to attend our first preview performances at the Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre for free. We want a new generation to be a part of the art, conversation, and change that starts on our stages, and to help us ensure the future of live theatre.

“CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S MISSION FOCUSES ON INTRODUCING THE LARGEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCES, FROM ALL ACROSS LOS ANGELES, TO THEATRE,” said Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “Through programs like FreePlay, we are making a direct effort to welcome new theatregoers by lowering any perceived barriers of our organization or live theatre overall. It’s imperative that we strive to create a more vibrant Los Angeles with a stronger cultural fabric that supports such accessible experiences.”

FreePlay tickets are available by phone, online, and at the Center Theatre Group Box Office approximately two weeks before the performance, up until 30 minutes before showtime, pending availability. Reservations are free if made in-person at the box office. There will be a $5 per ticket handling fee to reserve online or by phone. Learn more, see the full 2018/19 performance schedule, and sign up for our mailing list to be notified of on-sale dates at

CTGLA.org/FREEPLAY 213.628.2772

FreePlay is part of a major effort to welcome new theatregoers through performances, events, and programs designed to communicate the accessibility of our organization and our art. Initiatives that introduce young people to theatre include Student Matinees, which offer free tickets and an immersive educational experience to thousands of students around Southern California each year; the Disney Musicals in Schools program, which helps elementary schools teach musical theatre; and workforce development programs that help students of all backgrounds learn about and begin their careers in the arts. New programs like our Community Conversations, which connect the art onstage to real-life issues, and our Spanish Open Caption performances, are also aimed at welcoming new faces at the theatre. In addition, we’ve recently launched subscriptions for teens—our Backstage Club—and for young people under 40—The Crew—to help build younger audiences. We’re excited to have FreePlay join this robust slate of programs, which has been core to the organization’s nonprofit mission since our founding. FreePlay has been an instant success, with demand so high for the first preview of School Girls at the Douglas (on September 2, 2018) that we made FreePlay tickets available to the second preview as well. We will reserve a block of FreePlay tickets to every Taper and Douglas production this season, which includes plays by Zoot Suit writer/director Luis Valdez, August: Osage County writer Tracy Letts, and A Doll’s House, Part Two writer Lucas Hnath. We are also planning to include select Ahmanson shows in the program.

In addition, Michael inaugurated Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Development Program, designed to foster the development and production of new work. STEPHEN D. ROUNTREE (Managing Director) joined Center Theatre Group in 2014 as its new Managing Director. He was previously the President and CEO of The Music Center (2002–2014) and held the position of CEO of the Los Angeles Opera concurrently from 2008–2012. Prior to The Music Center, Rountree served the J. Paul Getty Trust for 22 years, starting in 1980 as Deputy Director of the Getty Museum. In 1984, he was appointed Director of the Getty Center Building Program, with responsibility for managing all aspects of project development, design, and construction of the Getty Center in Los Angeles. In January 1998, he was named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Getty Trust. He currently serves as a trustee of Occidental College, The Ahmanson Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and the Polytechnic School. He advises numerous nonprofit institutions on matters relating to nonprofit management and building programs. His involvement was critical to the building of Walt Disney Concert Hall at The Music Center, serving on the boards of the LA Phil and Walt Disney Concert Hall, Inc. DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 29TH season at Center Theatre Group. Previously, he managed Broadway and touring productions including Tru, Born Yesterday, The Gospel at Colonus, Annie, A Chorus Line, Working, The Wiz, and Legends!, which premiered at the Ahmanson Theatre in 1986 and starred Mary Martin and Carol Channing. many seasons at Center Theatre Group as General Manager and, previously, as Audience Development Director. She oversees mainstage productions at the Taper and Douglas, as well as new play commissions and developmental productions through Center Theatre Group’s New Play Development. Nausica has taught at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, and advises and works with local nonprofits including Hollywood Orchard. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Los Angeles —the cultural hub of the country—is home to America’s most diverse population and more entertainment options and venues than anywhere else in the U.S. A s one of the nation’s largest performing arts centers, and as a cultural anchor in Los Angeles County, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of enriching the lives of every resident. To help realize its vision, The Music Center is poised to become a multidisciplinary arts center for the 21st century, not only as a home for classical art forms, but also as a driving artistic voice for diversity and inclusion that reflects and responds to the ever-evolving landscape of Los Angeles. Through compelling programs that are relevant to a range of audiences, serving Los Angeles in all its breadth, The Music Center is both the home and the force behind some of the greatest creative expression today.
