FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to Center Theatre Group With three theatres of different sizes and scales, we are lucky to be able to partner with a range of international, national, and local artists—and you can see all three onstage this month. In 1997, Center Theatre Group introduced America—and Los Angeles—to the work of the great British director/choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne by bringing his groundbreaking Swan Lake to the Ahmanson direct from the West End. Sir Matthew continues to amaze me with his ability to surprise us with classic tales like his Cinderella, which we’re very pleased to have onstage at the Ahmanson once again. Ruben Santiago-Hudson is a brilliant actor, director, and writer who also has a Center Theatre Group history—he appeared on our stages in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars and in the World premiere of Jelly’s Last Jam before both shows went to Broadway. Now, he’s returning to the Taper with his seminal Lackawanna Blues, a very American story of his childhood in upstate New York and the wonderful woman who raised him. I’ve truly enjoyed working with Ruben over the years and am honored to have him back at our theatre with this deeply personal and moving work. We launched our Block Party program in 2016 to celebrate the innovation, excellence, and diversity of the Los Angeles theatre ecosystem by remounting recent productions from local companies at the Douglas. Our third edition of Block Party features Theatre of NOTE’s For The Love Of (or, the roller derby play), Skylight Theatre Company’s Rotterdam, and Antaeus Theatre Company’s Native Son—all terrific shows by companies with rich Los Angeles histories. Whether you are discovering these shows—or companies—for the first time or know them well, by joining us for Block Party you’re helping celebrate the vibrant art and artists that make Los Angeles a leading theatre town. Thank you for helping make our partnerships with these artists and organizations possible.
Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie

EDUCATORS DIVE INTO DANCE BEFORE CINDERELLA Students from around Los Angeles filled the Ahmanson on February 13, 2019 for a Student Matinee of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. They had prepared for the production through in-class visits by dancers from Bourne’s New Adventures company, reading our Discovery Guides, and learning about the show’s World War II setting and its creation. But before all that, their teachers had gathered at Center Theatre Group for an Educator Conference that included instruction from Teaching Artists, deep historical and theatrical background—and an introductory ballet class to help them offer their students a movement vocabulary to talk about the production they would be seeing.

Marron performs in Through the Looking Glass. Photos by Ryan Miller/Capture Imaging.
In summer 2015, 10 years after he’d graduated from high school, Manuel Marron’s 10th grade English teacher invited him to join a playwriting workshop. “I really had no idea what I was getting myself into,” recalled Marron. “I didn’t have any expectations at all.”
A Playwright Emerges The workshop, which met in Montebello over the course of eight months and was led by playwright and poet Jerry Quickley, was a Center Theatre Group program/production called Through the Looking Glass. It invited members of two Los Angeles communities (Montebello and Leimert Park) to create and perform a play inspired by individual residents’ autobiographies—written not by themselves but their counterparts in the other community. “I live in what’s considered a gang neighborhood,” said Marron of Pico Rivera, where he was raised by his grandmother and uncle after his father died and his mother left, and is just east of Montebello. “Each time we’d meet up to read our pieces, the reaction I got from people about my writing made me feel inspired,” he said. “It made me feel like, maybe all these people aren’t lying to me, maybe I can do something.” He added,
“Center Theatre Group has had an amazing effect on me. It’s opened up just an entire life I had no idea I could even be a part of.” Before joining Through the Looking Glass, Marron hadn’t been doing much writing—mainly poetry and some short film scripts—and playwriting was “new to me completely,” he said. But he was quickly hooked. Over the next few years, he stayed involved in programs and workshops through Center Theatre Group, and in January, he enjoyed another first: his new, original piece, A Wake, was performed as part our Library Play Readings Series at three branches of the Los Angeles Public Library in Boyle Heights. His high school English teacher Libby Rego, who also participated in Through the Looking Glass, wasn’t entirely surprised to hear that Marron had stuck with it. In high school, “he was an excellent writer with a great imagination, and he also really hated authority and following rules,” she said. When she heard about Through the Looking Glass, Marron “was the first person I thought of, because he’s always been super creative and had an interesting and unique perspective on things.” His writing in Through the Looking Glass, she added, “was always so good.”
“Manny is somebody... who’s got stories inside of him that really deserve to be seen by lots and lots of people. He has a voice.”
Marron participated in more Center Theatre Group workshops, led by playwright Naomi Iizuka, as well as Chisme y Queso, a program that featured performances of short pieces by a group of local playwrights at a Boyle Heights bar. “He had an amazing ear for dialogue, he had a huge amount of empathy, and the way that manifested was in how complex his characters were. His characters were just incredibly rich, multidimensional—they were fully formed people,” said Iizuka, who also praised his “funny, dry, dark” humor. “And then what became apparent, as it does over time as you work with someone, was he was just an incredibly diligent hard worker.” She added, “I honestly think Manny is somebody—because of his life experiences and because of how he sees the world—who’s got stories inside of him that really deserve to be seen by lots and lots of people. He has a voice.” Chisme y Queso helped Marron develop that voice but also gave him what he hadn’t even realized he needed: “self-confidence in my own writing that came from sharing my work and putting it out there. I’ve always been filled with a lot of doubt, and I guess that’s what’s held me back for so long,” he said. Through the workshops and performances “I was able to open up and actually realize that I had far more potential than I was working with.” After Chisme y Queso concluded, Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes invited Marron to write something new for the Library Play Readings. “It feels like something very special because it’s in the libraries and in Boyle Heights. It feels like it’s giving back to the community,” said Marron. “I’m really excited to have my writing have any representation at all, but especially coming from something that’s representing East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights.” A Wake is “about a young man who is trying to overcome his fear of death at his grandmother’s wake,” said Marron. “It’s about how people mourn and why we mourn the way we do.” The experience of seeing his work read out loud, in public, remained surreal. “The fact that there’s going to be actors and a director I need to meet with is coming out of left field for me and people who are like me, who come from where I come from,” said Marron. “I am super, super grateful for the opportunity to get my view on the world represented. I don’t think I would have had an opportunity
without Center Theatre Group to express myself that way, and it’s been a blessing to my life. Not just my day to day but how I feel about myself, how I feel about my writing, and how I feel about my future.” TOP: Abe Martell performs A Wake in Boyle Heights. INTRODUCING OUR
30 TO CURTAIN PODCAST How did playwright Dominique Morisseau convince Temptation Otis Williams to trust her with his life story for the book of Ain’t Too Proud? Why did Eliza Clark stop writing a play about an alien abduction and start writing a tale of a doctor/talk show host’s fall from grace that became Quack? What puppets did Zoot Suit and Valley of the Heart creator Luis Valdez hone his ventriloquist skills on in high school? And what’s the best use of your time as you drive to the theatre to see a Center Theatre Group show?
Center Theatre Group’s new podcast, “30 to Curtain,” hosted by Artistic Director Michael Ritchie, answers all these questions and more as we sit down for interviews with some of the greatest theatre makers from around the world. Our podcast aims to bring our audiences direct, intimate access to the amazing talents we work with every day across the Ahmanson, Taper, and Douglas. We’re not only talking with artists currently onstage at Center Theatre Group but will also be featuring voices from our past, present, and future to highlight over 50 years of bringing groundbreaking theatre to Los Angeles. Our debut episode featuring Dominique Morisseau was recorded just after the announcement that Ain’t Too Proud (which played the Ahmanson August 21 – September 30, 2018) was heading to Broadway and a few weeks before the playwright was named a MacArthur “Genius.” Ritchie talked with the Detroit native about the arc of her career and her creative process. “How much research do you want to do?” asked Ritchie. “Do you want to be accurate when you sit down to write a play?” “I do want to be accurate,” said Morisseau. “But as I’m writing, I realize that sometimes the facts get in the way of the truth. Facts will make me a slave to this day and this moment, but I won’t actually get underneath it and get to the heart of what that moment was really about. …I’ve developed the mantra, ‘I’m not a slave to the facts, I’m a slave to the truth.’” Ritchie also brought together Quack playwright Eliza Clark and director/Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller to discuss the development of the comedy at Center Theatre Group before its World premiere at the Douglas October 21 – November 18, 2018. “The relationship between a playwright and a director on a new play is almost like a marriage,” said Ritchie. “Is the honeymoon over? On both sides, how do you navigate developing that relationship?” “It has been really fun to be able to do workshops of the play knowing we were going to have a production. That’s not a thing that happens all the time in theatre and has been a real blessing,” said Clark. “I really only end up doing plays that I’m really excited about, and that’s a gift because it makes the relationship with the playwright so much easier,” added Keller. “You feel like the playwright has caught a certain magic in a bottle, and it’s just about what you can do…to help her realize as fully as possible that magic.” Curious about Luis Valdez’s ventriloquist days? You’ll have to listen to “30 to Curtain” to learn more! Find it on most major podcast platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, and Stitcher, or stream it on SoundCloud. She didn’t know it at the time, but Andi Chapman’s first encounter with legendary playwright August Wilson was prophetic. “He said ‘hello’ and told me I had hands like his mother,” said Chapman—who, 22 years old and beginning graduate school at the Yale School of Drama, wasn’t sure what to think. Today, however, “That’s a special thing to me because I feel like a mother, a nurturer, of the kids here at the August Wilson Program.” Chapman, a director, actor, and educator, holds the title Program Advisor on the August Wilson Program Faculty at Center Theatre Group. But as so many young people and their families know, she is much more than that. Since the program’s inception in 2011—when she also helped create the curriculum for the August Wilson In-School Residency—she has trained, taught, and supported every single Regional Finalist to come through the Los Angeles August Wilson Monologue Competition. The Competition is an educational journey for local 10,TH 11,TH and 12TH grade students, who hone their acting skills while receiving an introduction to Wilson’s work. Each year, approximately a dozen advance from Preliminary and Semifinal Auditions to the Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum, at which point they work closely with Chapman as a group.

and actor. “The confidence a teacher gave me in the seventh grade to have my own voice, to know my voice mattered in the world, also gave me the confidence to do something as fearless as Native Son and all the work I’ve done,” she said. “If I can somehow, some way, pass that on, somebody else will have the same experience.”
“I know what it feels like when your voice is heard. It was important to me to pass that on.”
THE AUGUST WILSON PROGRAM IS PRESENTED BY THE CENTER THEATRE GROUP AFFILIATES
This is the goal of the 20 hours of training and rehearsals she leads the Regional Finalists through in the weeks leading up to their performances at the Taper. “The first thing I ask them in the workshops I do is what drew them to the monologue they selected,” said Chapman. “They’ll say, ‘I identify with Booster,’ ‘I identify with Bertha.’ I ask them why. There was something in their song, in these characters’ voices, that spoke to them. And then I encourage them to tell it within the context that August Wilson has set up. That’s what’s most important: their voice is heard, but it’s heard through the lines of August Wilson. The challenge is to ensure that the authenticity of the monologues is honored and the voices of the students are honored.” In all of the activities the students do, Wilson is at the center. “I show them who he is, show them his work, let them hear his voice in different interviews and things so they can see the kind of man he was,” she said. She helps the students see the context in which their monologue lives, ultimately preparing them to perform the entire play rather than just one piece of it. “We keep building so the characters shine through—they have different colors, different levels of emotion, so the characters aren’t all angry or sad or crying. We give them humanity,” she said. Also at the core of the students’ learnings is that “working together is key and ensemble is key. I know it says ‘August Wilson Monologue Competition,’ but it’s really ensemble,” said Chapman. “We’re one voice trying to tell a story of this particular artist.” That feeling carries through the Regional Finals and beyond, including the National Finals in New York. Chapman travels there with two Regional Finalists, who perform their monologues on Broadway. “Every group we’ve had has been very supportive of each other. Backstage when we’re doing the show, they’re all hugging, they’re right there with each other. Whoever’s going to go on to New York, the whole village goes along. We all go with them.” She added, “The win is not so much the trip to New York. The win is for a
student to feel as if they have fulfilled the telling of the story—and they used themselves to do so. That’s the great beauty of this program.”

We’re delighted to have Center Theatre Group Associate Artist Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella return to the Ahmanson two decades after making its American debut with us. But Center Theatre Group audiences have had many chances—10 in fact—to experience his works since 1997, when they became the first Americans to see his groundbreaking dance theatre and his ingenious adaptations of films and fairy tales via his daring Swan Lake. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights from this prolific director/ choreographer’s past productions to appear at the Ahmanson, which is proud to be his North American home.

or over 20 years and dozens of projects, Bill Sims Jr. and I have stood shoulder to shoulder. Whether in cafes, arenas, living rooms, or on Broadway, Bill’s music, spirit, intellect, and passion saturated everything he touched. His music has been the bedrock, the foundation, the warm blanket that engulfed everything we’ve done. Every note Bill played had to be the truth. Everything he wrote was life itself…his life, his story…our lives and history…clearly, profoundly, dignified, and authentic.
Bill loved Lackawanna Blues as much and maybe even more than I did. I once said to him, “I don’t know if I could do Lackawanna Blues if you aren’t there.” And in his classic Bill Sims Jr. cool he responded, “I’ll be there. You might not see me, but I’ll be there.” Watch and listen closely—that soothing touch you feel…that warm embrace…Bill and Nanny spreading some love our way. “Well Done.” Ruben Santiago-Hudson

CHRIS THOMAS KING (Performer and Additional Music Compositions). Born in 1962, New Orleans blues guitarist, composer, and actor Chris Thomas King became the last major folk-blues discovery of the 20TH century when he was discovered in Louisiana in 1979 by a folklorist from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He was introduced to the world by venerable folk label Arhoolie Records as an authentic folk-blues successor to Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and Jelly Roll Morton. As the darling of blues purists and aficionados, King shocked the music world in the early ’90s when he embraced hip hop modernity and digital aesthetics, turning the blues world upside down. In 1999, Chris Thomas King was chosen by the Coen brothers to play the role of itinerant bluesman Tommy Johnson alongside George Clooney in the Academy Award-winning movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? King followed this with a major acting role in another Academy Award-winning film, Ray, as band leader

Lowell Fulson. Furthermore, King scored music for both O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Ray’s award-winning soundtracks. Forty years after becoming the last major folk-blues discovery of the 20TH century, King, whose career is a coda for the folk-blues revival of the ’60s, is today one of the most important artists in the world for having changed the way we think of blues. Having superseded the success of his predecessors, selling more than 10 million records in America—a remarkable feat for an blues artist—the multi-talented Grammy and Country Music Award (CMA) winner, with 16 albums and dozens of films to his credit, continues to headline theatres and festivals worldwide. His latest album is Hotel Voodoo. BILL SIMS JR. (Original Music Compositions) was an internationally respected vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and “Master of the Blues.” He began playing piano at age four, and by 14 he was playing professionally in a rhythm and blues group. A Warner Bros. recording artist, Mr. Sims also was an accomplished musical director and lent his talents to many theatre and film productions in New York and the United States. He won the Obie Award for his original compositions in Lackawanna Blues, as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play for the Tony Awardwinning revival of Jitney in 2017. Mr. Sims also was nominated for a Grammy for And I Still Rise. Additional theatre credits include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and August Wilson’s Two Trains Running (Two River Theater) and The Piano Lesson (Hartford Stage and Signature Theatre). Mr. Sims was the subject of the acclaimed documentary An American Love Story (PBS), for which he composed many of the songs on the soundtrack. Other film credits include Lackawanna Blues, New York Stories, Miss Ruby’s House, American Gangster, and Cadillac Records. MICHAEL CARNAHAN (Scenic Designer). WE CELEBRATE FAMILY
GROWTH
LOVE

FRIENDSHIP
LAUGHTER
We champion all of life’s moments. What connects us and brings us closer together. All that makes us different, and yet, very much the same. That’s why, for the last 100 years, we’ve provided our communities with the life-changing disability services they need. Today, we honor that legacy with an eye to the future — the next 100 years. And we’re committed to building a world where everyone is 100% included.
All abilities. Limitless possibilities.

Sometimes the only thing you need to solve an intractable international conflict is waffles. A Norwegian social scientist and his diplomat wife are determined to try a new tactic to break the long-standing deadlock of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. When the political becomes personal, relationships are forged that offer a chance to alter the course of history in this 2017 Tony Award ®-winning comedy.
