FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Center Theatre Group One of the things I love most about theatre is that it can hit you in the gut with existential truths and make you laugh hysterically—sometimes simultaneously. Onstage this month at Center Theatre Group are two works that explore humanity and the depths of our souls using two very different forms of theatricality. Both are terrific, and I know you’re going to spend your time at the theatre loving the humor and feeling many emotions. Center Theatre Group has a long history of producing the finest interpretations of the great playwright Samuel Beckett’s work, from our celebrated production of Waiting for Godot to the more recent, beloved Endgame. With Happy Days, we are thrilled to welcome Academy Award® winner Dianne Wiest, a renowned interpreter of Beckett herself, to the Mark Taper Forum stage for what promises to be a remarkable production of this seminal work. Over 25 years ago, William Finn and James Lapine’s Falsettos had a celebrated Broadway premiere and went on to become a new classic that celebrates family—the ones we’re born into and the ones we choose—and chronicles a pivotal, heartbreaking moment in our history. This Lincoln Center Theater production, which again became a Broadway hit, is tremendous, and it’s a pleasure to welcome this talented company to the Ahmanson Theatre. Thanks for joining us, and I hope you’ll come back again soon, either as a subscriber or to a show at the Ahmanson, Taper, or Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie

JUN 5 – JUL 7 Visions of Boyle Heights at the Library The East Los Angeles College Storytheatre Ensemble—students in James Buglewicz’s theatre class—spent the year interviewing Boyle Heights residents to create an original play about the neighborhood. In March, they brought the bilingual Visions of Boyle Heights, which traces the forces of displacement that affect a family over generations, to our Library Play Reading series— then performed it on campus shortly thereafter.

FORGING PLAYS, BUILDING COMMUNITY

THE L.A. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP FESTIVAL RETURNS

THERE ARE MANY KEY MOMENTS IN A PLAY’S JOURNEY

to the stage: the initial idea, the first draft, the first rehearsal, the opening night. In the midst of these typically are numerous workshops, formal and informal, where actors, the playwright, and perhaps a director read and listen to the play aloud to see how it works as a piece of theatre. Often, workshops involve more revisions and tweaks; the hope is that the process results in a new, stronger draft that is better than the last. At a certain point, however, a playwright needs an audience. That’s where Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A.—which takes place on June 29, 2019 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre—comes in. Established last year, the Festival features public readings of three bold and original new works by Los Angeles playwrights who have taken part in Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop. It’s a celebration of the unrivaled diversity and excellence of the Center Theatre Group and Los Angeles playwriting community and an amazing opportunity for the featured playwrights to put forward a piece of new work that is gearing up to be fully produced.

Since 2005, the L.A. Writers’ Workshop has invited seven local playwrights to spend a year at Center Theatre Group researching and writing a new work with the feedback of their fellow writers and artistic staff. Our three 2019 Festival playwrights—Laura Jacqmin, Dominique Morisseau, and Steve Yockey—all represent why Los Angeles is one of the most exciting cities to be a theatre artist right now. Jacqmin, who participated in the 2017/18 L.A. Writers’ Workshop, is currently writer-supervising producer on the television series Get Shorty, and has had works produced on regional stages around the country including Steppenwolf and Long Wharf Theatres. She’s bringing Campaign—a play about toxic masculinity, male trauma, and bagel bites—to the Festival.

“I wrote the play in an extended fit of rage following the 2016 election,” she explained. “I think leading up to this new election, there’s a brand new context for the piece that I’m excited to explore.” For Jacqmin, who moved to Los Angeles from Chicago a few years ago, the Festival is also coming at a pivotal moment in her playwriting career. “I still feel like I haven’t figured out the kind of playwright I am in Los Angeles,” she said. “Out here, I know what kind of TV writer I am, what kind of video game writer I am. I feel like my plays have never been more true to who I am, and what I want to explore, but I also see their future less clearly. …So having a workshop and being in the room with actors and being empowered in a very different way than I am on set, that’s golden.” Continues on page 12

Morisseau, who was anointed a MacArthur “Genius” last fall, arrives at the Festival fresh off her Broadway debut, having written the book for Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations (which was onstage at the Ahmanson before heading to New York). Her Festival play Confederates was developed during her time in the 2016/17 L.A. Writers’ Workshop, and is set amidst the Civil War and on a university campus today. The woman at its center is a slave, and Morisseau was inspired by what she saw, and didn’t see, in contemporary stories of slavery. “I never see what the women are doing other than being victims, and so I wanted to see: what else are they doing?” she said. “They survived. They’ve got to be doing some other stuff than just waiting to be told what to do and doing it.”

Laura Jacqmin

Morisseau credited the L.A. Writers’ Workshop with helping her find a community of playwrights here while giving her unparalleled creative freedom.

“One of the special things about the group is we’re there strictly because Center Theatre Group makes so much space for the wide range of our creative exploration,” she recalled. “We were all able to support each other’s different ideas and help each other cultivate the different stories we wanted to tell on our own.”

Dominique Morisseau

Yockey, a 2011/12 L.A. Writers’ Workshop member, has had work produced throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and is currently writer/producer for the television series Supernatural. He’s eager to make progress at the Festival with his new play Sleeping Giant—about a mysterious lake monster and the lengths people go when they want something to believe in. “I’ll get tons of insight digging in with a director and four really game actors during rehearsals,” he said. “Ultimately though, the audience reactions during the reading will tell me pretty quickly if the piece is working. That’s the more nervy part.” The Festival is designed to bring together not just playwrights and audiences but a burgeoning group of local artists. “The Los Angeles theatre

community seems to be growing rapidly in terms of depth and diversity of voices, stories, and aesthetics. The sheer variety of work to see gets me stirred up,” said Yockey.

Join us on June 29, 2019 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and see what all the excitement is about. The 2019 L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival will be a day full of great plays and interesting conversations—plus free-flowing coffee and delicious snacks. Visit CTGLA.org/LAWritersWorkshopFestival for tickets.

A NIGHT OF NEXT GENERATION INSPIRATION

A Youth-Forward

August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals

Presented by the CENTER THEATRE GROUP AFFILIATES Special thanks to the Center Theatre Group Corporate Circle and the Rosenthal Family Foundation for their generous support of the August Wilson Program.

The August Wilson Program also receives generous support from THE MICHAEL SHAW JACOBS FUND.

THE SOUNDTRACK WAS THE BLUES, but the mood at the Mark Taper Forum could only be described as ebullient on March 11, 2019, at the August Wilson Monologue Competition Los Angeles Regional Finals. After months of workshops, rehearsals, and auditions, 12 young people gave incredibly powerful, unforgettable performances of monologues from August Wilson’s legendary American Century Cycle, which chronicles 10 decades of African American life. Inspiration was the theme of an unreservedly youth-forward night. The first inspiring sight: young people—Center Theatre Group Student Ambassadors participating in our arts leadership program for high school students—inviting guests to partake in engagement activities on The Music Center Plaza. The next inspiration: our three alumni hosts, E.J. Cabasal, Pablo Lopez, and Ayanna McKnight—previous regional finalists—who had returned to the Taper stage to give back to the program. In between monologues, master of ceremonies Pat Harvey (presiding between the 6 and 11pm broadcasts at CBS2) talked about how the selected plays connected to Wilson’s four major inspirations: blues music, writer Jorge Luis Borges, poet Amiri Baraka, and visual artist Romare Bearden, whom Wilson called “the four B’s.” Continues on page 16

But perhaps what was most inspiring, beyond the truly sublime performances themselves, was the enthusiasm of the crowd at every step of the way, and particularly for each and every performer. In addition to family, friends, and Center Theatre Group donors and staff, the Taper was full of students participating in our August Wilson In-School Residency Program—which sends teaching artists into high school classrooms to immerse them in Wilson’s work for an entire semester. It was hard to believe that the level of excitement in the theatre could rise after the love showered on our celebrity judges, including Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) and Kara Royster (who participated in the program here and appeared on TV shows including K.C. Undercover). Yet the audience acknowledged each monologue performance with unflagging applause and cheers.

Mylah Eaton

The supportive atmosphere extended to the 12 performers themselves: Bene’t Benton, Kyle Branch, Samuel Caruana, Tiffany DeBerry, Dejean Deterville, Mylah Eaton, Jofre Paul Francisco, Jada Henry, Laila C. Stewart, Vanessa Valencia, Daniel Velez, and Ryan Wade. Their journey to the Taper began in the fall, at Orientation sessions; continued at Preliminary and then Semifinal Auditions, where 133 students became 57 and then 12; and brought them together for 20 hours of training and rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the Regional Finals. The bond that had formed along the way thanks to the ensemble focus of their training was visible throughout the night. Kyle Branch received the Ensemble Award, which is voted on by the 12 finalists and given each year to the student who best exemplifies the program’s spirit of ensemble. Dejean Deterville placed first, Mylah Eaton placed second, and Daniel Velez placed third. All received scholarship awards, and Deterville and Eaton are heading to New York City to perform alongside students from 10 other cities at the National Finals at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre on May 6, 2019.

Dejean Deterville

“THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUGUST WILSON MONOLOGUE COMPETITION PROCESS WAS HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND TIME WITH OTHER ACTORS WHO HAD THE SAME INTEREST AS MYSELF,” SAID DETERVILLE. “WE WERE ABLE TO CONNECT AND WORK OFF OF EACH OTHER, WHICH MADE THE EXPERIENCE AMAZING.” Eaton called the other Regional Finalists “lifelong friends,” adding that she was excited to go to New York both to fulfill a longtime dream and “to meet a new group of people who’ve been studying August Wilson in other parts of the country.” Bringing people together around great theatre is of course central to the mission of this program, and to Center Theatre Group and our supporters. “It was an uplifting night for everyone in attendance and, as always, made the Center Theatre Group Affiliates proud to be the inaugural partner and presenting sponsor of this magnificent program that helps carry on August Wilson’s legacy and bring his work to a new generation. Committee Chairs Sheila Poncher and Ilene Eisenberg presented student participants with medals for outstanding performance,” said Center Theatre Group Affiliates President Dr. Carmen Schaye.

L.A. STUDENTS TRY ON CINDERELLA’S SLIPPERS In Our Shoes Immerses Students in the Professional Dance World

It was a few hours before curtain on a Friday afternoon at the Ahmanson during the February 5 – March 10, 2019 run of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. Dancers were onstage rehearsing, under the watchful eye of two members of the New Adventures company. The performers finished their number, got some feedback, and did it one more time. The big difference between this afternoon at the theatre and most others: the dancers were all high school students at Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise. They were on the Ahmanson stage as part of the New Adventures In Our Shoes program, which invites student groups to workshop with company members, see a production, and create their own piece of dance responding to the show. Center Theatre Group partnered with New Adventures to bring the program to Los Angeles during the Cinderella run. Thanks to this collaboration, the participating students— most of whom have less than two years of dance experience and are currently enrolled in a dance class taught by Tiana Álvarez—got a threeday crash course in dance. “Center Theatre Group is tremendously proud of our 22-year relationship with Matthew Bourne and New Adventures. In addition to creating astonishing works of dance theatre, New Adventures, like Center Theatre Group, maintains a robust educational and community engagement program,” said Center Theatre Group Producing Director Douglas C. Baker. “In Our Shoes provided 16 Los Angeles-area high Continues on page 20

school students the opportunity to take a truly deep dive into the world of professional choreography and what it takes to be a professional dancer. We look forward to continuing our work with New Adventures and to providing our Los Angeles community with similar extraordinary experiences.” Álvarez’s class kicked off In Our Shoes at the Student Matinee performance of Cinderella on February 13. They were among the approximately 1,500 students from across Los Angeles who attended the show. On February 14, New Adventures dancers Luke Murphy and Mami Tomotani—who also visited many of the Student Matinee classrooms for pre-show workshops—spent the morning leading a hands-on (or rather feet-on) workshop in Álvarez’s classroom in dance technique and in creating their own choreography.

“I don’t know if I can find the exact words to express my elation. The last three days have been momentous for my students. I could see in their faces what an amazing experience it was.”

“All of the movements are inspired by the show,” explained Murphy. “We threw material at them and guided them through creative exercises to make the dancing their own”—which is what the company themselves does under the guidance of Matthew Bourne whenever they make a new piece. The workshops gave students an understanding of “the difficult process and the dedication it takes to execute dance pieces,” said one participant. “We all got a small example of what a dancer’s life is like.” On February 15, the students continued to work with Murphy and Tomotani in the Center Theatre Group rehearsal room and, finally, on the Cinderella set at the Ahmanson. They also got a backstage tour and participated in a Q&A session with dancers Alan Vincent and Daisy Mae Kemp...which opened with questions for the students. “How have you found it?” asked Vincent. “Painful!” shouted one of the students. “Physically or mentally?” asked Kemp. “Physically!” the group shouted, nearly in unison.

Nonetheless, they were all smiles and full of curiosity about the life and work of professional dancers. Kemp and Vincent answered questions about dancing in Bourne’s Cinderella, how they concentrate before taking the stage, their professional paths, and what advice they have for young dancers. And then it was time for the students to show the dancers what Cinderella had inspired in them, as In Our Shoes culminated in a terrific and spirited performance with the entire New Adventures company in the audience. “I don’t know if I can find the exact words to express my elation,” said Álvarez as the workshop concluded. “The last three days have been momentous for my students. I could see in their faces what an amazing experience it was. One of my students even said that the real-world experience of rehearsing all day and under pressure had made her decide she wants to pursue dance! And no one wanted to leave at the end of the day because they didn’t want to lose the feeling of being onstage.” The students agreed that the effort and time they put in, and perhaps even the pain, paid off. “It is a lot of work, and you just keep going over and over until you get it,” said one student. “It takes a lot of strength and courage. It is really worth it at the end when you perform.”

How many adults in the United States today identify as trans? What’s the difference between gender identity and gender expression? What does “cisgender” mean? What’s the best way to find out a colleague, friend, or patron’s pronoun?

Center Theatre Group Partners with TransCanWork to Build a More Inclusive Company

These were a few of the questions asked and answered at recent trainings hosted by TransCanWork for Center Theatre Group staff. Inspired by the Skylight Theatre Company production of Rotterdam (onstage at the Douglas March 28 – April 7, 2019)—which features a trans character’s journey—we partnered with TransCanWork to help us make our company a more welcoming place for members of the trans community. TransCanWork is a team of educators and program navigators committed to advancing workplace inclusion through innovative training strategies and workforce development. The trainings were also part of a larger, ongoing effort to create a culture of greater equity, diversity, and inclusion at Center Theatre Group.

“In an effort to create an authentic and ongoing ‘community of learning’ at our theatre that acknowledges and seeks to repair injustices, we need look no further than the work on our stages to discover rich opportunities and partnerships to help us learn and create a more inclusive and representative organization. The themes and ideas in Rotterdam inspired us to learn more about what it means to be a trans person in today’s world and think about ways we can make our theatre and its operations more welcoming to the trans-community,” said Center Theatre Group Director of Social Strategy, Innovation and Impact Leslie K. Johnson, whose responsibilities include serving as the theatre’s chief diversity officer. TransCanWork hosted three trainings for staff members working on Rotterdam from departments across the company devoted to helping participants better understand the spectrum of gender and sexuality, debunking stereotypes and understanding the diversity within the trans population, and learning how to communicate in the most inclusive and sensitive way possible with trans people and about trans issues. In addition to sharing facts like the adult trans population of the US today (1.4 million) and the percentage of American kids who identify as trans (0.7 percent), the training leaders walked staff through the difficult questions and decisions that arise in the process of transitioning that might surprise cisgender people (who identify and present as the same gender they were designated at birth). They also led exercises in introducing yourself and your pronoun and offered other tips for creating more inclusive environments. The sessions concluded with staff members putting the training in action in the creation of work-related communications like casting notices and social media posts and role-playing conversations with patrons. “We have a philosophy of radical hospitality at the Douglas, which means that we want everyone to feel truly at home and just totally, completely welcome in our space, and the training was one more way to ensure that,” said Center Theatre Group Audience Engagement Manager Jaquelyn Johnson, who oversees the Douglas Concierge staff. “We all really enjoyed how interactive the training was and how we were encouraged to ask questions—and even to say something wrong, because that’s how you learn. In the process we realized that we have an opportunity to improve the signage for our all-gender restroom at the theatre and to help people use it before the house is open. The training helped us to see blind spots like this and learn more.”

IT’S NOT A VIEW YOU GET EVERY DAY: THE EMPTY HOUSE OF THE AHMANSON THEATRE, SPOTLIGHTS SHIMMERING ONTO A STAGE THAT’S BETWEEN PRODUCTIONS. IT’S NOT THE CELEBRITY SIGHTING YOU GET EVERY DAY EITHER, EVEN IN LOS ANGELES: ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK STARS AND SONGWRITERS OF ALL TIME, CUP OF TEA IN ONE HAND AND ACOUSTIC GUITAR IN THE OTHER, STEPPING OUT ONTO THAT VERY STAGE FOR AN AUDIENCE OF JUST OVER 100 PEOPLE. On March 26, 2019, Sting gave a group of Center Theatre Group supporters and members of the media an intimate preview of one of the most anticipated productions of the upcoming 2019/2020 Ahmanson Season: The Last Ship, which he wrote and stars in.

“This is a show we expect will take Los Angeles by storm,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie in his opening remarks. The Last Ship’s January 14 – February 16, 2020 run at the Ahmanson is one of just two U.S. engagements, added Ritchie, so “Los Angeles audiences will get to see a show very few others will see.” Producer Karl Sydow introduced Sting and the show, which contains “some of the greatest music ever written for the stage” and is a “huge, spectacular production.” By contrast, Sting’s preview performance—beginning with “The Last Ship”—was almost completely stripped down, with Sting on guitar and the show’s musical director, Richard John, on keyboard. Afterward, Sting “rambled a bit,” talking about the inspiration he found in the shipbuilding town where he was born and raised for the show, which tells the story of community trying to hold itself together. Sting, who plays Jackie White, the shipyard foreman, was also joined by Oliver Savile, who plays Gideon Fletcher—a sailor returning home after 17 years away—and Frances McNamee, who plays Meg Dawson, Gideon’s long-lost love. “This story is full of strong women,” noted Sting. (L–R) Matthew Ball and Liam Mower in MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE

The season kicks off with LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS (September 5 – October 20, 2019), written and performed by John Leguizamo and directed by Tony Taccone, and coming to the Ahmanson after an acclaimed Broadway run. Inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books, Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school project. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called Latin History for Morons a “surprisingly poignant one-man show [that] slyly poses sharp and timely questions of what culturally defines American identity and who, in the nationalistic age of Trump, has ‘the right’ to be here.” Next up, also direct from Broadway, is THE NEW ONE (October 23 – November 24, 2019), written and performed by Mike Birbiglia and directed by Seth Barrish. Birbiglia delves back into his own life to tell a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor his fans have come to expect. When she included The New One in her list of the best stage shows of 2018, Entertainment Weekly’s Jessica Derschowitz lauded Birbiglia’s “hilarious and poignant observations about becoming a parent…some of his best and most heartfelt work yet.” We’re excited to have New Adventures return to the Ahmanson on the heels of successful runs of Cinderella and The Red Shoes with MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE (December 3, 2019 – January 5, 2020). Center Theatre Group introduced American audiences to Bourne’s work for the first time in 1997 with his original Swan Lake, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down, and took the dance world by storm.

Mike Birbiglia in THE NEW ONE

Rock legend Sting stars in the acclaimed UK production of his deeply personal musical THE LAST SHIP (January 14 – February 16, 2020), which was initially inspired by his 1991 album The Soul Cages and his own childhood experiences. It’s the story of a sailor’s return home after 17 years at sea to find the local shipyard, which has anchored the community for generations, in turmoil. Picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (played by Sting) and his wife fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm. Back by popular demand, the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical THE BOOK OF MORMON is making its Ahmanson debut (February 18 – March 29, 2020) after three previous sold-out engagements in Los Angeles. The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it, “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.”

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

We are also delighted to present ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (April 7 – May 10, 2020). Written by the Tonywinning team Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), Once on This Island is directed by two-time Tony Award-nominated director Michael Arden. It is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world and ready to risk it all for love. The season concludes with an additional production to be announced. Full-season subscriptions are now available. We hope to see you at the theatre next season! Visit AhmansonSeason.org to subscribe.

“I’m very proud of that.” Sting narrated the arc of the show between songs—including “When We Dance,” “Shipyard,” and “Dead Man’s Boots”—and put on a few different hats to sing other characters’ parts.

HERE’S TO YOU

The performance closed with another version of the eponymous song, and an invitation from Sting to come back for more next year. If the standing ovation was any indication, everyone will.
