FROM THE PRESIDENT
The past several months have posed many challenges, from the global pandemic to widespread civil unrest prompted by the murder of George Floyd. In these unsettling times, when stay-at-home directives prevent us from gathering as a community to attend theatre, we at Center Theatre Group have kept you in our thoughts. We hope you and your family remain safe and healthy. The pandemic has taken much from us, including the joy of sharing the experience of live theatre—yet the absence of this unique forum also offers us a moment to reflect upon its value. Theatre creates an extraordinary connection that brings people together around stories that illuminate our perspectives and allow deeper understanding of other points of view. As we face the multi-layered challenges of a pandemic and sweeping calls for societal change, theatre remains more important now than ever before—a forum with the power to help restore our society. At the beginning of last Fiscal Year on July 1, 2019, everyone at Center Theatre Group was excited to welcome our new Managing Director and CEO, Meghan Pressman, who was selected by our Board of Directors after an international search to partner with Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. With an M.F.A. in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama and an M.B.A. from Yale School of Management, Meghan brings a wealth of theatre experience to our company, having previously worked at Woolly Mammoth in Washington, D.C., Signature Theatre Company in New York City, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Northern California. When Meghan stepped into her new role, we planned sixteen productions across our three iconic venues, three Broadway premieres, numerous Student Matinees, and extensive programming serving our local community partnerships and young people of all ages. This year’s annual report highlights nine key moments, including marking our successes on stage, the passing of beloved members of our theatre family, and the ways our company needed to pivot in response to the pandemic. During this turbulent time, I have been truly grateful for Meghan and Michael’s leadership, and our entire staff’s nimbleness, resourcefulness, decisiveness, and unflagging commitment to our audiences, artists, young people, and the communities we serve. As our valued stakeholders, you motivate us daily to restore live theatre in Los Angeles and to prepare for a new future for Center Theatre Group once we reopen our venues. As you read this annual report, I hope you share my confidence that Center Theatre Group remains in good hands, and that a bright future lies ahead. With great respect,

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR/CEO
Thank you for your unwavering dedication to Center Theatre Group and your unyielding passion for live theatre. I am honored to serve this company and have been infinitely impressed by the support of our generous Board Members, donors, audience members, artists, political leaders as well as the entire Los Angeles community. Without you by our side, we would have truly struggled to survive, and Michael and I would not have been able to lead our team through this unparalleled moment in history. I send you my deepest, most sincere thanks. During my first several months, I spent time actively listening and getting to know many of you. Through your honesty, generosity, and faith, I thought I was gathering resources to plan for this organization’s exciting future. Little did I know I was building a foundation that would support the company through an unprecedented moment—the simultaneous closing of all three of our theatres for what will likely be nearly a year and a half. We have had to ask ourselves unimaginably tough questions and make extremely difficult business decisions, keeping top of mind the survival of our company and our promise to the community to fulfill our mission. Millions of dollars in ticket sales were returned; over one hundred staff were laid off; dozens of artists and stagehands were released from planned contracts. Ultimately the company was forced to reduce its footprint from a nearly $60 million organization to $15 million for the new season. These kinds of decisions, sadly, were faced by nearly every theatre across the world. As you will see in our audited financial statements, these hard choices enabled us to pivot quickly and conclude Fiscal Year 19/20 Budget in the black and lay the groundwork for a reduced budget and path to recovery during Fiscal Year 20/21. Rarely is there a bright light in times such as these; however, there is one of which we are most proud. This spring, we were able to move our education and community programming to the virtual space and reach hundreds more young people and families. Even though we are not working with our youth and educators in-person, we are reaching people all over the globe. It has been an unexpected yet rejuvenating result of the pandemic. Of equal importance was the call to action from our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) industry colleagues, who shared nationally a document entitled “BIPOC Demands for White American Theatre.” This national conversation was a wakeup call for us all, as were the voices of our own BIPOC staff who more specifically focused on the vital work necessary to be undertaken within Center Theatre Group. We must see this as an opportunity to reflect at a time when the entire theatre industry is at a near standstill. These demands came from our colleagues, our peers, our community. We feel both inspired and hopeful for all that is to come from our entire industry’s efforts as well as our own specific work to embody a fully Anti-Racist and equitable theatre industry. Center Theatre Group’s collective leadership has made a public statement that reflects our commitment to change. These commitments reflect the vision we held upon our founding—it has always been our mission to use the power of storytelling to create the social reflection and connection that is critical to holding our community together. Theatre plays an essential role in a civilized society, and with your continued loyalty and help, Center Theatre Group will open its theatres once again. Your support is more vital than ever, not only to this company but also to the future of theatre in America. Warmest Regards,
Meghan Pressman Managing Director/CEO

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
“ We are an organization that creates and shares stories, and the power of storytelling has never been more vital.”
Center Theatre Group is not simply the productions on our stages. We are an organization that creates and shares stories, and the power of storytelling has never been more vital. There are hundreds of thousands of people across Los Angeles desperate for us to continue broadening their horizons through our art and engagement. Especially in this socially distanced world, theatre remains capable of helping people become more empathetic, compassionate, and human. While none of us could have predicted where the state of our industry would currently be positioned, our mission before, during, and after this global pandemic remains ever the same: to serve the diverse audiences of Los Angeles by producing and presenting theatre of the highest caliber, by nurturing new artists, by attracting new audiences, and by developing youth outreach and arts education programs. At this moment when our stages are dark, it was imperative that we picked up the baton our founders handed us and continue to carry it into a bold new future for our art form. Center Theatre Group is hard at work finding a way to help shape the future of American theatre and ensure that it is an equitable space for the voices of those marginalized for generations. Through making extraordinary and incomparable investments in artists, expanding the voices at the decision-making table, enriching the next generation of theatre leaders, educating all of the staff members who are core to our business, and programming in the digital landscape through innovative presentations of theatrical experiences, we are absolutely carrying out work that is just as important as the programming of our mainstages. What we are undertaking now is a vital investment in the future of Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles, and the future canon of theatre across America. The existential threats we are facing include our better understanding and ultimately changing whose stories we are telling, broadening the communities we are serving, and reaching audiences old and new through bold new channels as we continue to reveal the power of live theatre. We are committed to helping lead and change the national conversation around these issues and redefining what is possible. We find ourselves at a moment of crisis, but also a moment of reimagination. And that is why your support remains vital to the future of theatre in America. Sincerely,
Michael Ritchie Artistic Director

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS IMPACT
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS: What does community engagement look like in a virtual setting? We’ve moved our Library Readings and community commissions online.
EDUCATOR PROGRAMS: We developed new initiatives and modified existing programs to support the unique needs of students and educators in the 2020/2021 school year, including access to archival videos, virtual student matinees, and an online version of our August Wilson In-School Residency.
“In these trying times, teaching theatre online is so difficult, but to have access to an archive performance like this is remarkable. Students can visualize all the elements that they’ve been taught in class from acting, directing, design, and play analysis.”
“Initially, we were going to do a live reading, and once that was cancelled, I had to reimagine a completely different format, which then ended up being a mini-documentary. Not only was I able to gain new editing skills, but our viewer’s feedback inspired me to bring forward the stories of our Fil-Am Vets.” —Fran de Leon, Community Stories artist
—Carla Corona, Adjunct Assistant Professor in Theatre Arts at Antelope Valley College
As we pivoted to completely virtual offerings across the organization in response to the global pandemic, our Education and Community Partnerships programs were the first to fully adapt to this radically different landscape. We were deeply grateful to be able to continue so much of our regular programming and were thrilled to add several new initiatives to support the many students, educators, and parents adjusting to remote learning.
STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM: We are proud to continue many of our student initiatives this year, including our high school leadership and college readiness program.
WORKING IN THEATRE: While in-person career training is on pause, we’ve developed a suite of brand-new programs, including a free weekly webinar series open to all.
“I’ve gained a greater appreciation of my possibilities as an artist, invaluable advice from a series of incredible and inspiring creative mentors, actionable steps for making my dreams come true, and a supportive tribe to encourage me on my journey.”
“As someone who’s never participated in this side of the art world before, I’m extremely excited to learn about career opportunities and skills that were, up until a little while ago, completely unknown to me!” — Ian Pirotto, Student Ambassador

2019/2020 YEAR
Center Theatre Group JULY 2019
Meghan Pressman named new Managing Director and CEO Following an international search, Center Theatre Group’s Board of Directors selected Meghan Pressman to partner with Artistic Director Michael Ritchie in leading one of the nation’s largest and most active theatre companies. She joined with an eye towards building on Center Theatre Group’s legacy of artistic ambition and excellence and cultivating an audience as diverse and vibrant as Los Angeles while overseeing all of the organization’s business operations. She also joined as the first female Managing director in the nonprofit’s 50+ year history.

Pulitzer Finalist Soft Power opens at the Public
Linda Vista opens on Broadway
In 2014, Artistic Director Michael Ritchie approached Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright David Henry Hwang to commission a new work for Center Theatre Group’s 50th Anniversary. After collaborating with Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change; Fun Home), Tony Award-nominated director Leigh Silverman (Yellow Face; Chinglish), and Tony Awardwinning choreographer Sam Pinkleton (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; Amélie), Soft Power made its World premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre before transferring to New York for a sold-out run at The Public in 2019. As a final celebration of this groundbreaking Center Theatre Group commission, Soft Power was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020.
The 2019/20 Season had Center Theatre Group celebrating multiple New York City moments, beyond the monumental transfer of Soft Power to The Public, including the Broadway premiere of Linda Vista by Tracy Letts. Having played the Mark Taper Forum in 2018, this co-production with Steppenwolf moved to Broadway after the L.A. premiere, opening with Second Stage at the Hayes in 2019. Since 1967, Center Theatre Group has continued to make a major impact on culture in Los Angeles as well as on theatre and artists across the country. By continuing to send work to New York and to Broadway, we continue to show the power of regional nonprofit theatre in America.

Hollywood legend and CTG hero Kirk Douglas passes As the world mourned the loss of a Hollywood legend with the passing of Kirk Douglas, the loss for Center Theatre Group was meaningful on an entirely different level. Kirk and Anne Douglas have been a part of our theatrical family for more than 50 years. Our connection to Kirk and Anne starts at the very beginning, even before any of the theatres were built, as they began as generous donors to Dorothy Chandler’s vision for The Music Center. However, one of their most impactful shows of support to Center Theatre Group was the anchor gift they gave us in order to make the Kirk Douglas Theatre possible. It was thanks to this transformative gift from Kirk and Anne that our Founding Artistic Director Gordon Davidson realized a long-held dream of creating an intimate, mid-sized theatre dedicated to new work, new artists, and new audiences. Arts and culture wouldn’t exist in the United States without the individual generosity of philanthropic heroes like Kirk. We will forever miss him in the audience and in our lives here at Center Theatre Group.

What the Constitution Means to Me sets records
COVID-19 leads to all three theatres closing
Center Theatre Group broke two records with the highly acclaimed engagement of What the Constitution Means to Me at the Mark Taper Forum by offering more free and low-cost tickets throughout its run than any other production at the theatre while also setting the record for highest weekly gross in its over 50-year history with $533,285 for the week ending February 23, 2020. This galvanizing play by Heidi Schreck provided a serendipitous opportunity to further our ongoing pursuit of welcoming new audiences and breaking down barriers to our theatres by providing broad access to young patrons, while at the same time proving that record-breaking sales and radical access are absolutely possible at the Taper.

With the ongoing response to COVID-19/novel coronavirus quickly evolving at the beginning of March, Center Theatre Group had to comply with an overnight directive of the California Department of Public Health and a mandate from the County of Los Angeles, and ultimately cancel performances of The Book of Mormon, The Antipodes, and Block Party at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre. While we never could have imagined we would remain closed this many months later, it remains our top priority to keep our entire community safe, which will remain the most important factor in how we continue to respond to the still ongoing crisis.

Annual College and Career Fair Pivots Online Inspired by the need to create community beyond a shared physical space in the face of the early phase of the COVID-19-related shutdown, our Education and Community Partnerships team quickly rose to the occasion and pivoted its programming online. With our annual College & Career Fair having already been scheduled to take place shortly after our closures, we found inspiration in the untapped potential of digital platforms and quickly transitioned to a completely virtual event hosted on YouTube. Hundreds of students and educators participated, and their excitement gave us hope for the future of the arts. This early pivot also laid the groundwork for the ongoing radical change in our delivery systems that we would come to undertake throughout a prolonged in-person shutdown.

Associate Artistic Director Dianne Rodriguez passes
Board of Directors Anti-Racism Reckoning
We were deeply saddened by the loss of longtime Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez. She was part of our organization’s artistic team for 24 years, having overseen new play production from 2005 until 2019. Diane was an artist and producer with a wealth of experience who was always looking forward, urging us to break boundaries and consider what the future of our art form would look like and what role we could play in that evolution. She commissioned, developed, and produced the new work of more that 75 artists for Center Theatre Group, but her mark on this company and our international theatre community goes beyond any collection of work. Her most enduring contribution will be her sense of exploration. She felt that our most important tradition was the tradition of pushing boundaries and expanding the artform itself, both in how theatre is created and experienced. She helped imprint that trailblazing spirit into this organization’s DNA, and her impact on Center Theatre Group and her collaborators around the world will remain everlasting.

In June, we as a community shifted our focus to the long-standing systemic inequities that have continued to plague our society as much as any pandemic. While Center Theatre Group’s Leadership issued our own Commitments to Change, we also received letters from individuals and groups urging us to do better and go further. These letters included communications from an organized group of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) staff within Center Theatre Group and the writings of our colleagues making up We See You White American Theatre. That same month, our Board of Directors voted to create a standing committee dedicated to equity, diversity, inclusion, access, and antiracism. The committee set its goals for the season to 1) revise the Board’s workplan and goals to include measurable and actionable steps in diversifying its membership and moving towards being an anti-racist organization and 2) create an education and learning plan for the Board, starting with anti-racist training this fall.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all levels of the organization’s finances. We furloughed 60% of our staff until full production activity resumes, implemented pay reductions ranging from 5%-20% for most remaining staff salaries, and made reductions in non-personnel operating costs which we continue to monitor to determine if/when additional reductions are warranted. In terms of income results, we fell short of our budgeted goal by 23%, totaling a loss of $13.4 million in projected revenue, most from ticket and subscription sales.

Despite this impact and the indefinite closure of all three mainstage theatres, the 2020 fiscal year resulted in a modest deficit of roughly $2 million, as originally projected. In addition, we sustained our program expense ratio from 2019, directing 62% of each dollar earned toward mission-based artistic and education work. This outcome is in large part due to swift expense management, draws on our reserve fund, the release of handling fees previously allocated for a new building, and the continued philanthropic support in the final three months of the fiscal year towards our Emergency Giving Fund.

This unprecedented dark period on our stages is expected to result in cumulative losses of approximately $40 million in ticket revenue and has necessitated a severe 79% cut in our operating budget in fiscal year 2021. Moreover, philanthropic support from our loyal donor base is projected to make up a critical 64% of our total income for the new year, an increase from what would normally be nearly 25%.

Your support and genorosity this year has inspired us to continue developing theatre to sustain that experience you get when sitting in your seat at the Ahmanson, Taper, or Douglas. We know you can’t wait to return. As soon as it’s safe, we’ll have a seat ready for you.
“Theatre builds community. I can’t think of anything else that brings people of different backgrounds and philosophies together into the same room to experience stories through the lens of their own perceptions. Theatre is magic.” —Phylicia Rashad
