WELCOME TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP We’re starting the new decade at Center Theatre Group with three productions that couldn’t be more different—a major musical from a rock icon, an acclaimed play about American democracy, and a deeply compassionate exploration of a devastating moment in recent history. But what unites these three works, and all of us in the audience, are the powerful and personal stories they tell.

At the Ahmanson, Sting stars alongside a top-notch cast in the visually spectacular The Last Ship. I love the songs and the choreography, but I also love the origin story—that this musical was created to pay tribute to the shipbuilding community where Sting was born and raised. It’s about a man returning to his roots and was written by a man returning to his roots, too. And as it explores an industrial city moving into a post-industrial age, it uses one community’s story to highlight a very universal experience of our current time.

At the Taper, Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me chronicles the relationship between four generations of American women and the document on which our country was founded. It has, rightfully, been declared one of the most important new plays in recent memory; it is timely and, I am sure, will be proved timeless. That’s because it fulfills a promise of great theatre: changing the way we see our world by saying something we’ve never heard before about a subject we thought we knew intimately.

At the Douglas, we’re proud to produce Dael Orlandersmith’s stunning Until the Flood, directed by Associate Artistic Director/Literary Director Neel Keller. Dael conducted interviews in Ferguson, Missouri following the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown to create a play that goes far, far beyond the headlines to explore race, grief, and community. This theatrical experience connects you to what it means to be human, and to why we need art.

around CENTER THEATRE GROUP WELCOME, 2019/20 STUDENT AMBASSADORS! This season, 16 young people—from 14 high schools across Los Angeles County—will be spending eight months growing as arts leaders as part of our Student Ambassador Program.

They’ll be producing an audience engagement project for Once on This Island in addition to inspiring community engagement through our social media platforms focused on the August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals and our College & Career Fair for the Arts.

BEHIND SALON DOORS KICKING OFF THE L.A. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP

“WHAT’S IT LIKE TO PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE FACE?” playwright Ngozi Anyanwu asked mixed martial artist Ashlee Evans-Smith. They were sitting in the Douglas rehearsal room, where the 2019/20 L.A. Writers’ Workshop had just kicked off with its annual Salon. From a clinical psychologist and Jesuit priest to an anthropologist and African American art curator, nearly a dozen experts from around Los Angeles dropped in on the three-day event to help seven local playwrights gain insight into the subjects of the new works they’re developing with Center Theatre Group’s support.

But what is also exciting about the weekend is that the playwrights gain additional knowledge about subjects they never anticipated exploring—a phenomenon that seems to happen every year, noted Keller. He said the playwrights often end up incorporating the ideas of the experts who were invited by other members of the cohort.

There was no inquiry the experts couldn’t answer—for instance, in response to Anyanwu’s initial question, EvansSmith went on to explain that, for her, throwing a punch is methodical and tactical, rather than emotional.

Playwright Dionna Michelle Daniel, who is working on two plays—a theatrical revision of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and a semi-autobiographical play about family secrets—said the most “mind-blowing” thing she learned at the Salon was that New York City’s iconic nightclub, the Cotton Club, was highly segregated. Daniel also said talking with experts “made the ideas and themes of my play much more personable—it’s a much better experience to speak with the experts than scouring Google for information.”

Adelina Anthony, who is working on a sci-fi play that incorporates Nahuatl codex imagery and mexihcatl tradition, was excited to discover that there are plans to make the Florentine Codex (which translates and transcribes Aztec history) accessible online. “Speaking to my own experts made me realize the terrain I want to explore in my play are vast areas of knowing and not-knowing,” she said. “This liminal space is always attractive to me as an artist, because it’s in the shades of gray that I find affirmation of our collective humanity.”

Center Theatre Group Celebrates

THE POWER OF STORYTELLING

W JAN 14 – FEB 16, 2020 AHMANSON THEATRE

At Center Theatre Group, we tell stories with and for our artists, our audiences, and our community. The first three shows coming to Center Theatre Group’s stages in 2020—The Last Ship at the Ahmanson January 14, What the Constitution Means to Me at the Taper January 12, and Until the Flood at the Douglas January 24—are truly representative of the power of stories to inspire artists, change lives, and bring people together.

“I’m repaying a debt, if you like, to the community that raised me, that created me,” said Sting of The Last Ship, which tells the story of a coastal English shipbuilding town that finds its livelihood threatened. In order to write this story, “I began to go back in my life to the environment that formed me, made me who I am. I started to revisit the people I’d known in that community, the people who worked in the shipyard, the people who were my neighbors, the people who were my friends,” recalled Sting.

“I wanted to write a story about the richness and the value of community, the spirit of community.”

JAN 12 – FEB 23, 2020 MARKTAPERFORUM

The inspiration for What the Constitution Means to Me playwright Heidi Schreck also came from her past. As a teenager, she competed in American Legion debate competitions. “I decided to follow the prompt of the original contest, which was to find a personal connection between my own life and the Constitution,” Schreck told Terry Gross in a Fresh Air interview. “And in attempting to do that, I ended up writing a story about four generations of women in my family, about how the Constitution shaped their lives...and about the ways it shaped my own life.”

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis approached Dael Orlandersmith about creating Until the Flood in the months after a white police officer shot and killed Michael Brown, an African American teenager, and Ferguson, Missouri erupted in social unrest. Orlandersmith conducted extensive interviews in Ferguson in order to write the piece. “I hope the characters reflect the different feelings and thoughts” of the community, said Orlandersmith. “That’s what my emphasis is on and that’s why I wrote it.” She added, “I don’t speak for people, I speak to people.

I’m not a politician. I hope that people are listening, and I hope it invokes a certain kind of thought and communication.

WHAT DOES THE TAPER MEAN TO YOU? AT THE MARK TAPER FORUM, LEGENDS ARE MADE, ARTISTS ARE INSPIRED, AND MEMORIES ARE CREATED. We interviewed audience members, artists, and staff to celebrate our 2019/20 Season and to honor the greats who have made the Taper one of America’s iconic regional theatres and a Los Angeles landmark. Our new video series, “What the Taper Means to Me,” blends interviews, behind-the-scenes footage (including a drone in the house!), and archival materials to explore what the Taper means to all of us.

“When they say ‘Forum,’ they’re not kidding,” said actor Bernard K. Addison, who made his Taper debut in 2018’s Water by the Spoonful after attending shows as an audience member for many years. “It’s open. We all see each other; we all immerse in the storytelling that’s on the stage. It’s not an accident that great plays like Angels in America and August Wilson plays are great because of their work here.”

It doesn’t take long to figure out that the Taper is someplace special. “I come to be inspired, to be moved, to escape,” said Nayara Alexis, who has attended shows through our FreePlay program for audiences age 25 and under. “One of my favorite feelings is when I come here, right before the show starts— everybody talking, everybody’s excited to see the play, they’re reading the programs. There’s no other theatre like the Taper.”

That history includes many of the most talented theatre artists of all time. Groundbreaking plays like Angels in America and Zoot Suit made their World premieres there.

Denzel Washington, Al Pacino, and Anna Deavere Smith are among the famous faces who have trod the boards of the Taper. Playwrights including August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Robert Schenkkan have watched previews of their new work from the audience and in the wings.

2020 is no exception, with this spring and summer featuring Heidi Schreck’s acclaimed What the Constitution Means to Me, Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker’s The Antipodes, and Rajiv Joseph’s World premiere production King James.

Adriana Gomez has been a Taper subscriber since 1993 in order to see works such as these. Theatre “moves one in a way to think differently, so that we can make our world a better world,” she said. “I think the theatre really is important in that way.”

Center Theatre Group Prop Director Merrianne Nedreberg has worked on many memorable shows at the Taper, but among her favorites was Pulitzer Prize finalist Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo by Rajiv Joseph (whose King James comes to the Taper this summer). Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo “was absolutely beautiful at the Taper,” said Nedreberg. “Then we

GEORDIE GLOSSARY

1938–1950: Many shipyards are reinstated and nationalized to build ships for the war effort.

Geordie is the dialect of Tyneside in the North East of England. On the border with Scotland and as a deep sea port, the city has its own distinct accent and a lexicon of words drawn from Scandinavian and Baltic languages from across the North Sea, Scots, Scots Gaelic, and Romany. For this production we are not using the broadest of accents, but we have retained some of the wonderful sound and words of the North East.

1970: The Conservative government is elected under Edward Heath.

Aye: Yes

1971: The Heath government attempts to close the Upper Clyde Yard in Glasgow despite the Yard being economically viable. Led by trade union leader Jimmy Reid, the laborers occupy the yard and stage a work-in, where they continue working despite the yard’s proposed closure.

In a span of 18 months, the workers complete several ships, and in 1972, the government is forced to keep the yard in operation.

1294: First shipyard is established on the River Tyne, building ships for Edward the 1 of England. st

1852: The Swan Hunter Yard is established in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1906: The Mauretania, a transatlantic ocean liner, is launched from Swan Hunter.

The ship was 790 feet long with a beam of 88 feet and a gross tonnage of 31,938 tons.

It carried 2,000 passengers on its maiden voyage on November 16, 1907 and won the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic, a record held for 22 years.

1920–1933: During the global economic downturn, 28 shipyards are closed in the North East.

1972 & 1974: Miners begin protest strikes, which paralyze the country and lead to huge wage increases, directly bringing down Ted Heath’s Conservative government in 1974.

1973: Britain joins the European Economic Community.

1974: Election ends in a “hung parliament” with Harold Wilson as prime minister.

1977: In the Ridley Plan, MP Nicholas Ridley proposes how the next Conservative government could fight and defeat a major strike in a nationalized industry. Privatization of heavy industry and the systematic weakening of the power of trade unions becomes a central objective of “Thatcherism.”

1978–1979: Strikes paralyze Britain during the so-called Winter of Discontent. In response to government wage restraining, inflation, and IMF austerity measures, a massive wave of industrial unrest spreads across Britain.

May 1979: Conservative Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain’s first female prime minister.

March 1984: A 12-month “miners strike” over pit closures begins. National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) chief Arthur Scargill unites various strikes into nationwide industrial action without a ballot.

June 1984: During the battle of Orgreave, 5,000 riot police take on 5,000 protestors. The BBC edits footage of this violent confrontation to make it appear as though the miners instigated violence when, in fact, the police baton charged protestors.

September 1984: Thousands of miners and police clash once more at Malty Colliery near Rotherham. Protestors had been out of work for six months and the lack of income was starting to take its toll.

November 1984: A growing number of miners decide to return to work as Christmas looms.

Violence on the picket lines becomes more widespread.

December 2015: The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign provided the then-Home Secretary Theresa May with a lengthy legal argument, calling on her to set up an independent public inquiry into the policing of events at Orgreave on June 18, 1984.

WHO’S WHO STING (Jackie White, Music & Lyrics) was born Gordon Matthew Sumner on October 2, 1951 in Wallsend, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England, the eldest of four children of Audrey (Cowell) and Ernest Matthew Sumner, an engineer and milkman. He grew up in the turmoil of the ship-building industry and wanted to become a musician very early having developed a love for the bass guitar. He played in jazz/rock bands such as The Last Exit and other various outfits, including a Dixieland jazz group. In 1977, he formed the rock trio The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. In 1984, he went on to record solo albums and has evolved into one of the world’s most prolific songwriters and musicians. Throughout his illustrious career, he has received 17 Grammy Awards , a Golden Globe, an Emmy , four Oscar nominations, a Tony nomination, and has sold 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, as well as honorary doctorate of music degrees from Northumbria University (1992), Berklee College of Music (1994), University of Newcastle upon Tyne (2006), and Brown University (2018).

Sting has authored two books, including The New York Times best-selling memoir Broken Music. His latest album, My Songs, features contemporary interpretations of his most celebrated hits and was accompanied by a critically acclaimed world tour, which will resume in June 2020. This spring, he will headline a Las Vegas residency, set to open at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Sting’s support for human rights organizations such as the Rainforest Fund, Amnesty International, and Live Aid mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there. He is an Emmy winner for his yearly music direction of the Kennedy Center Honors for CBS. Rob musically directed HBO’s We Are One: The Obama Inauguration Concert at the Lincoln Memorial, featuring Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, John Legend, U2, Beyoncé, and others, and has acted as musical director for the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards for the past 15 years. He has performed at the Grammys with Bruce Springsteen and has created the orchestral arrangements for his last three records, along with his recent Western Stars film. Rob has written arrangements for Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, Mavis Staples, Jay-Z, Eric Clapton, Beck, Aretha Franklin, and Yo-Yo Ma, among others. He was nominated for a Best Original Score Emmy twice for the HBO movie Thurgood and the documentary Herblock: the Black & the White. LORRAINE KEARIN (Deputy Stage Manager) graduated from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, in 2004 with a BA (honours) degree in stage management and technical theatre.

Since then she has gone on to enjoy an extensive career in stage management, working on a variety of productions in the UK and around the world. West End theatre includes Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Kinky Boots, The Play That Goes Wrong, Top Hat, The Woman in Black, Strangers on a Train, Birdsong, and Porgy and Bess. UK and international tours include The Last Ship (Toronto), Top Hat (Japan), Swan Lake on Ice (Spain), Grease (UK), Chicago (UK), Cats (Germany), and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (UK/Singapore).

CHRISTIAN BAWTREE (Assistant Stage Manager). Christian’s career so far has included shows both in the UK and internationally. He joins this production directly from the international tour of Titanic the Musical, which he stage managed both in Germany and China.

PEMBERLEY PRODUCTIONS (General Management) is dedicated to bringing European drama to North America and North American drama to Europe. The 2019/20 season sees Pemberley general managing (alongside PW Productions) the first US tour of The Last Ship written by and starring Sting, the first US tour of Emma Rice’s new musical Romantics Anonymous with Plush Theatricals in association with Wise Children, and a DC engagement of The Woman in Black (produced by PW Productions) at the Shakespeare Theatre of DC. In addition, Pemberley will produce the 2019 US tour of Georgian choral group Ensemble Basiani to New York, Berkeley, and Princeton. In their 2018/19 season, Pemberley co-produced the US tour of The Woman in Black, An Inspector Calls directed by Stephen Daldry, and the first US tour of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, adapted and directed by Simon Reade. Previous projects include a US national tour of the Royal Shakespeare Company/Filter Theatre production of Twelfth Night, a European tour of The Public Theater’s Apple Family Plays,

and an Irish tour of the American Players Theatre’s production of James DeVita’s In Acting Shakespeare. Pemberley also coproduced the US tour of Ensemble Basiani from the Republic of Georgia in 2016 and general managed the US tour of Druid Theatre’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane. IAIN GILLIE (Associate Producer) is the Managing Director of PW Productions, one of London’s most prolific theatre producers.

Alongside The Last Ship, current productions include The Woman in Black in the West End and McKittrick Hotel New York; Stephen Daldry’s An Inspector Calls on UK tour; and general management for The Jungle at St. Ann’s Warehouse, New York. Previous productions include Nigel Slater’s Toast (London/UK tour); The Last Ship (UK tour/Toronto); An Inspector Calls (West End/US tour); and This Is Ceilidh (Edinburgh Festival Fringe). Iain was general manager for the West End productions of Jerry Springer: The Opera; Bat Boy: The Musical; The Seven Year Itch with Daryl Hannah; and Round the Horne… Revisited. He trained at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London and went on to work at the National Theatre. In 1994, Iain was production manager for the West End production of Sue Townsend’s The Queen and I, which began his long association with producer Karl Sydow. During this period he also worked with Matthew Bourne, The Royal Court Theatre, Sir Peter Hall, Sam Mendes, Stephen Daldry, Yukio Ninagawa, Nick Hytner, Phyllida Lloyd, Caryl Churchill, and Stewart Lee. From 2007–2013, Iain was Executive Producer for Leicester’s new Curve Theatre, where he led the delivery of all aspects of the artistic program.

IVAN MACTAGGART (Associate Producer) is a feature film, TV, and theatre producer at the Cambridge Picture Company. In 2018, Ivan was BAFTA and Oscar nominated, having produced the world’s first painted animation feature film, Loving Vincent, about the later life and mysterious death of Vincent Van Gogh. He recently co-produced Red Joan, the story of an elderly woman unexpectedly arrested for espionage, starring Dame Judi Dench and Sophie Cookson. He works as an associate producer with Karl Sydow on theatre projects including Dirty Dancing and The Last Ship. Previous film and TV credits include My Week with Marilyn (with Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh), The Wipers Times (starring Ben Chaplin, Michael Palin, and Emilia Fox), and the BBC documentaries Glyndebourne: The Untold History, and The Birth of an Opera. Formerly Director of Film and Media Funds for senior debt financier BMS Finance, he has 20 years of experience in film financing, having worked in a variety of finance and business affairs roles for companies including BBC Films, BBC Worldwide, Baker Street Media Finance, The Works, and Signpost Films. As financier he was involved in numerous successful British films including Made in Dagenham, Moon, Bend It Like Beckham, Billy Elliot, and Shallow Grave.

CENTER THEATRE GROUP MICHAEL RITCHIE (Artistic Director) is in his 15 season as Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Director, and has led over 200 productions to the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre stages, including the premieres of six musicals that moved to Broadway—The Drowsy Chaperone, Curtains, 13, 9 to 5: The Musical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and Leap of Faith—and the Pulitzer Prize in Drama finalist Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.

MEGHAN PRESSMAN (Managing Director) joined Center Theatre Group as Managing Director in 2019. Previously, she served as Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (D.C.), Director of Development for Signature Theatre (N.Y.), and Associate Managing Director of Berkeley Rep, in addition to working at numerous other theatre and arts organizations across the country. She is the Vice-Chair of the National Board for the Theatre Communications Group (TCG).

DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 30 season at Center Theatre Group. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network, and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award.

JEFFREY UPAH (General Manager, Ahmanson Theatre) has worked in management at Center Theatre Group since 2006 on more than 50 musicals, plays, and special events including both pre-Broadway productions and Broadway tours. Some of his favorites include Follies, God of Carnage, and The Black Rider (having previously worked on Robert Wilson productions in Boston, Houston, and Sao Paulo, Brazil). Prior to Center Theatre Group, he worked in various capacities at the Santa Fe Opera, Yale Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, among others.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre— including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
