SUMMER 2014

NEW RESIDENCE HALL NAMED IN HONOR OF DICKSON FAMILY

Dickson Hall, scheduled to open this fall, is named after Shelley and David Dickson (inset).

Central Baptist College will name its new residence hall in honor of David and Shelley Dickson, Baptist Missionary Association of America missionaries who have served the BMAA since they were elected missionaries to Nicaragua in 1971. Dickson Hall, located facing west on Conway Boulevard, is scheduled to open in time for new student move-in day on August 16. The 150-bed residence hall will be the first housing project on the CBC campus in 49 years. The Dicksons’ relationship began in the late 1960s when David and Shelley both enrolled in classes at Central Baptist College. The Dicksons’ four children, David and wife Stacy “Epperson” Dickson, Josh and wife Anna “Wiles” Dickson, Aimee “Dickson” Hughes and husband Jason, and Jamie “Dickson” Miller and husband Loren, are all CBC alumni. David’s twin nieces, Nikki and Amanda, are recent CBC alums. Other extended family members also attended Central Baptist College. Their time at the College in the late ‘60s to early ‘70s led them to what is now more than 50 years of ministry, the majority of which has been devoted to the foreign mission field. In 1971, David and Shelley were elected missionaries by the BMAA to Nicaragua. They later served the BMAA as missionaries in El Salvador, Honduras (working with the Garifunas), Guatemala and Puerto Rico,

founding the “Church Without Walls” in Guayama, Puerto Rico. During their 15 years in Puerto Rico, David and Shelley also played an important role in missionary expansion in other areas of Latin America, including the Dominican Republic, Peru, Columbia and Central America. The Dicksons returned to the United States in 2010 and entered a new ministry with Bro. David serving as a field consultant for Latin America to provide mentorship, training and encouragement to BMAA national missionaries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The Dicksons make their home in Magnolia, Ark., where they are members of First Baptist Church. In addition to their four children, they have seven grandchildren. The $6.7 million residence hall will be three stories tall with design elements that include generous main lobby space on the ground floor for student games, lounging and group study, a covered main porch entry area, Resident Director Apartments, study tables and chairs, lounges on each floor, patio space, private bathrooms, and exterior plaza space for students to congregate. A financial commitment of $6 million from Max and Debbie Story of Magnolia, Ark., is funding the vast majority of the cost of the new residence hall. The design and construction team is comprised of Sowell Architects Inc. of Conway and Clark

Contractors LLC of Little Rock. Dickson Hall is the third of ten major construction projects called for in CBC’s Vision 2020: A Miracle in the Making capital fundraising campaign. According to CBC President Terry Kimbrow, “The Story’s have been instrumental in the success of the first two projects in Vision 2020. They gave a lead gift toward the construction of the David T. Watkins Academic Building that opened two years ago, named in honor of their longtime pastor and friend, Bro. David Watkins. They helped fund the new Story Library, which opened its doors in January 2014 and bears their name.” Max and Debbie are known for being extremely “missions minded,” and have funded numerous missions projects. The decision to honor David and Shelley Dickson is an appropriate tribute. “The Storys have never sought recognition for any of their giving or even requested naming rights,” commented Kimbrow. At the dedication of the Library, Mr. Story said, “I believe God blesses us to be a blessing to others.” The Dickson Hall Dedication and Open House will be held Friday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. = Central Baptist College is a four-year liberal arts institution with an enrollment of over 800. A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT VISION 2020 UPDATE Vision 2020 is a plan to complete 10 major construction projects over a 10 year period to accommodate an enrollment of 2,020 students. In late 2010, I, along with a small group of people, was praying and dreaming about the launch of a capital campaign for Central Baptist College. At that time we decided when we did launch the campaign our theme verses would be Ephesians 3: 20-21, which reads, “Now unto Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” I am pleased to report that Central Baptist College has been blessed abundantly since the launch of the campaign in February 2011! By the time you read this, Project #3 of Vision 2020, Dickson Hall (see related cover story), will be just a few weeks away from completion. Contributions and pledges for the campaign total over $16.3 million! The Phase 1 goal of $21 million to cover fully Project #1, the David T. Watkins Academic Building, Project #2, the Story Library, and Project #3, Dickson Hall, is well within our sights! All of the success of Phase 1 of Vision 2020 would not be possible without Christ’s continued blessings, and without each of you who have come alongside CBC in this endeavor. As of June 2, 2014, 424 donors have made 2,380 gifts toward the Phase 1 goal! This includes 68 CBC employees, 59 alumni, 47 churches, 17 board of trustee members, four foundations, and hundreds of other individuals and businesses that do not fit into these categories - we like to call you “friends.” There are countless other “friends” out there who are lifting us up in prayer on a regular basis and we know you are, because you have told us! I want both our financial contributors and our prayer warriors to know that each of you mean so much to me! You keep us going as we press on toward seeing Vision 2020 through to completion! And even though we are raising funds to build and renovate buildings, always remember that the mission of Central Baptist College remains the same: to integrate Christian faith and academic excellence! Central Baptist College exists to serve students so that they may experience the transforming power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do! Central Baptist College would not exist without YOU! LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2014 We are preparing for our largest fall enrollment in the history of the institution! I can’t wait to announce final enrollment numbers in late September. Pray with us for the hundreds of students who are making final decisions about attending CBC! We look forward to welcome new and returning Mustangs in August! Our enrollment management team, led by Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Ryan Johnson, has given more tours and processed more applications than ever before.

But, we still have room for you! There is still time to contact Admissions at (501) 329-6873, schedule your personal campus visit, and find out how you can enroll for the fall 2014 semester! CBC DAY FOR VISION 2020: SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 CBC Day for Vision 2020 is fast approaching! If you haven’t already, mark your calendars for September 7. On this day, churches are asked to take a one-time offering for Vision 2020 and/or make a pledge to give additional offerings over the 12 months to follow. To date, 47 churches and one Sunday School class have given special offerings totaling over $160,000 toward the $250,000 Vision 2020 Church Campaign goal. In addition to the honor attributed to David and Shelly Dickson, the new building will feature many naming opportunities. Any church giving $5,000 or more on “CBC Day for Vision 2020” will have naming rights on one of the 75 rooms. Information and resources for your church are available at cbc.edu/cbcday. More information will be added, so keep checking back! Also, pastors in the past have asked to have current CBC students come and speak to their churches on this day. We will honor those requests on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request a student to speak to your church, or to request more information, please contact Sancy Faulk, Vice President for Advancement, at either sfaulk@cbc.edu or (501) 205-8799. =

Sincerely,

Terry Kimbrow

PACE PROGRAM IT’S YOUR TIME Central Baptist College recently rolled out the “It’s Your Time” campaign. The campaign focuses on radio and online advertising and is aimed at promoting the PACE and Online Studies programs at CBC and targeting the non-traditional student. PACE is a Professional Adult College Education program offering an opportunity for working adults to earn a college degree. Most PACE students either left college or never had the chance to start college because of family or job obligations. The PACE program meets one night per week from 6 to 10 p.m., and most classes can be completed in five weeks. The Online Studies program is very similar to the PACE format in that classes enroll every five weeks. The program is flexible and convenient, accommodating adults with busy lifestyles. Degrees offered in the PACE program are: AA in General Education, AS in Military Technologies, BS in Adult Education and Training, BS in Human Resource Management, BS in Leadership, BS in Leadership and Ministry, BS in Liberal Studies, BS in Management Information Systems, BS in Organizational Management, a BS in Psychology, and a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Online degrees offered are: AA in General Education, BS in Leadership and Ministry, and a Bachelor of Business Administration. CBC and the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce have plans to announce an education initiative to deliver quality educational options to nontraditional students. The initiative is in response to Governor Mike Beebe’s goal to double the number of Arkansans with college degrees in Arkansas by 2025. Arkansas currently ranks forty-ninth in educational attainment. =

EDUCATION NEWS KINESIOLOGY ADDED TO LIST DEGREE PROGRAMS

FIRST EDUCATION DEGREE AWARDED AT CBC

John Atkins with Mrs. New and Mrs. Cole

Central Baptist College has added a Kinesiology major to its list of degree programs. Starting in the fall of 2014, CBC will offer two tracks of emphasis in Kinesiology: Exercise Science and Sports Management. The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology (Exercise Science) will prepare a student for career opportunities related to health and wellness in schools, communities, hospitals, commercial health and fitness clubs, and state, federal and corporate wellness programs. The program also seeks to fulfill prerequisites to professional schools in allied health fields (for example, physical therapy and occupational therapy). The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology (Sports Management) prepares students for career opportunities in various areas of sports-management. The student will receive both a strong background in sports and a strong business component, allowing him or her to develop the competencies required for management level positions in organized sports. Professional sport teams, college athletic departments, sports communication and public relations firms, sports agencies, health and fitness facilities, and parks and recreation departments are some of the businesses and organizations for which graduates will be qualified to work. “We believe the addition of this new degree will be well served here at Central Baptist College because of the large student-athlete population interested in this degree,” said Dr. Aaron Brister Chair, Department of Kinesiology and Sports Management. = 4

Meet Central Baptist College’s first Education degree graduate, John Atkins. John graduated from CBC in the spring of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. John first came to CBC as a baseball recruit in the fall of 2009 from Pangburn, Ark. As a student, John completed two internships for his degree. His first internship led him to Vilonia High School where he completed his Senior Level Observation. The following spring semester, he completed his student teaching

internship at Morrilton High School. When asked about his achievement, he stated, “I am very thankful for the Education Department, especially Mrs. New and Mrs. Cole. I couldn’t have done it without them.” John is currently working on obtaining his coaching certification and plans to attend graduate school where he will strive to achieve his Master’s in Education Building Level Education degree. John will start a position teaching social studies this fall in the Batesville School District. =

CBC OBTAINS LICENSURE IN FIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Samantha Long, Elementary School Education student The Arkansas Department of Education recently granted an Elementary Education licensure program to CBC. The licensure offers candidates the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and be eligible for an Arkansas standard teaching license in Elementary Education. The program includes rigorous courses in the content areas elementary school teachers teach, such as math, science, social studies and literacy, as well as in pedagogy, the art and science of teaching and learning. This program brings the total of ADE-approved licensure programs available at CBC to five. The other approved programs include Secondary Social Studies, Secondary English-Language Arts, Health and Physical Education, and Middle Level. All of these degree programs are consistent with the mission of the College, which includes helping students become lifelong learners who are equipped to serve others. Student interest in the programs is high, and we anticipate that it will be a successful addition to the academic offerings at CBC. =
